Weather stats, September 8th to 14th

20130915-151044.jpg

Our weatherman says:

Not such a good forecast last week – sorry folks! I predicted a dry week, which turned out a little wetter than anticipated.

The prediction for this week is that autumn will begin to set in, with cool and blustery conditions predominating. There will be strong winds and lower temperatures, and the rain will never be far away.

So much for the “Indian” summer – but we did get a pretty good summer this year…

Could you help your local community?

Parwich Parish Council is looking for volunteers to participate in clearing snow and ice from pavements and footways within Parwich during periods of wintery weather.

Derbyshire County Council’s Winter Service Scheme for 2012/13 proved successful with volunteers from 88 town/parish councils, 29 schools and 7 of the 8 district/borough councils in Derbyshire helping to keep Derbyshire’s footpaths and pavements clear during heavy snowfall; 58 local farmer/contractors used their vehicles to grit and clear the County’s roads.

In return for our help, Derbyshire County Council will provide us with:

  • A free delivery of up to a tonne of paletted 20kg bags of salt
  • Training for up to two representatives
  • Regular updates of when routes within our area have been gritted
  • A website facility to report snow clearing activities in our community and to notify the Council of any problems/issues in our local area
  • Refills of council-owned grit bins twice a year, where requested; once in September and again in January. This will be at the cost of the parish council but will guarantee grit bins are filled and ready for use when bad weather arrives

If you are interested in helping out or would like further information please contact any member of Parwich Parish Council.

Our weatherman says:

Temperatures are slowly dropping, and the light is definitely autumnal; however, this great summer still hangs on in there. The coming week looks pretty dry and pleasant for the time of year. Still time for that “Indian Summer”…

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The changeable weather looks like continuing, which is a shame for the Ashes cricket match at Old Trafford – with all three results currently possible, a good day tomorrow (Monday) could see a classic finish! Unfortunately tomorrow doesn’t look too good with rain forecast to disrupt play, which would indicate the draw will be the most probable outcome. Tuesday however looks like being a better day for the Parwich Panoramic Five race. Wednesday onwards looks like being a return to the present unsettled theme with more rain possible.

Weather Website Malfunction

The Parwich on-line weather station seems to have stopped automatically updating itself. Our Weatherman in the village says:

Typical isn’t it – whenever you get extreme weather, the weather web-site goes down. So for all of you on tenterhooks wondering whether we would record a record temperature today, I can tell you that we recorded 32.3 Celsius at 17:00 today in the middle of Parwich – I think that’s a record for my station.

Editor’s note: Of course, having not worked all day, as soon as we post this it has started working again. You got it sorted out very quickly Mr Weatherman-in-the-Village as it is not long since your car pulled in from work, well done.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

What a difference a day makes! It’s a good job Wakes Saturday wasn’t Wakes Friday, as we’d all have got very wet. Thankfully the weather was kind, and got better through the day. The outlook for the rest of Wakes Week is pretty good – looking dry for today (Sunday), Monday and Tuesday. There is some possibility of rain on Wednesday, but the chances are better conditions are in prospect for the end of the week. Temperatures look like being a little cooler than average, but at least it looks dry for a few days.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

As I write, this the weather could not have been less kind to Open Gardens today – I would be surprised if we see anyone out – but looking at the Met Office radar, it just might be a bit drier this afternoon.

The outlook for the start of the working week is looking good, with warm dry conditions prevailing Monday through Wednesday. Unfortunately, as we run up to Wakes, the forecast is looking more changeable. I always feel that any forecast beyond 4 or 5 days is guesswork, so let’s just hope in ignorance…

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

Apologies for the missing statistics and forecast last week, we were engaged in the Wateraid Mountain challenge 200, where the charity Wateraid aim to get 200 of the UK’s highest peaks climbed on the same day raising both money (from spronsorship) and awareness of the Wateraid charity. Wateraid is an international charity that transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation – something we in Parwich can thankfully take for granted.  (more…)

Our Weaterman in the Village says:

Major rain-gauge malfunction mid-week (maybe the deluge proved too much for it!), thus the measurements may be slightly inaccurate, but you get the idea – it was wet!

However, the good news is the current dry warm conditions are set to stay well into the coming week with a very pleasant week in prospect.

After a brief return to wintery conditions on Thursday and Friday, we’ve ended up with a glorious Bank Holiday weekend. Unfortunately this spell looks like it will break later today (Monday) and the rest of the week looks unsettled. There is a possibility that the weather will turn more settled again for next weekend. The temperature just nudged 20 degrees on Thursday, and it looks like tomorrow (Monday) could go higher in sheltered spots. The dry conditions are starting to cause a little concern for our gardens though.

It looks like we have a glorious Bank Holiday in prospect with lots of sunshine and warmth. This doesn’t look likely to continue into the working week with conditions becoming a bit more changeable.

weather13Apr7

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The weather certainly has the feel of the start of March rather than the start of April, but temperatures are gradually climbing and the snow is thankfully receding. The atmospheric conditions have been set for quite a while now, and the pressure has been moving in a narrow range for over 2 weeks. There are signs that this equilibrium is starting to get displaced, and that Atlantic lows are exerting their influence on the plug of cold air settled to the east of the UK. That means a change to more unsettled weather with more normal temperatures and westerly winds – much more usual weather for us. Sadly that also spells the end of the dry conditions, and there is wind, some rain and milder temperatures on the not too distant horizon.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The cold weather continues this week, but thankfully no further significant snow is forecast. There is a glimmer of hope that towards the middle of April temperatures will gradually climb to more seasonal values, but it looks like it will be a slow process.

Road conditions for Wednesday

After mammoth efforts from locals and Highways, it seems that the A roads and bus routes near by are now passable, though care may need to taken.

However it is still dropping well below freezing at night and forecast to remain cold at least to the weekend. Not all side roads are passable, so do leave comments if you have any updates or if there is more drifting.

Visit Buxton Weather or Derbyshire County Council websites for updates on the higher routes further north.

Wednesday 10am – snowing again. 3pm – but roads are OK.

An Ode To The Gritter

Gritter, oh gritter, how we long for you!
The snow is a beautiful icy-blue
The drifts are impressive, the surfing sublime
Even though Parwich is nowhere near a coastline
But we need to get out and back to work
Mind you, a day off is a really welcome perk
The wind howls, the fire’s stoked up
The Horlicks (aarghh) comes out for a hot, steaming cup
A few memorable days when Nature rules our lives
Until the exhausted gritter arrives ….
Some roads are now open (not yet the A515)
And it’s all back to normal, to the treadmill of life
No more scraping of shovels, no more gaiters and boots
No more shop shelves empty of foods
Let’s be honest, we’ll miss the snow
Thank you gritter, see you in 10 months or so.

– by Saskia T

Ongoing Road Conditions

Now, on Monday evening, the road from Parwich to the B5056 is passable with care, and the B5056 south to Ashbourne is also clear. We understand it is possible to get to the A515 through Alsop en le Dale, however we have not had any current reports of conditions on the A515 (Buxton Weather report there are still closures on the A515).

With the temperature again well below freezing and the possibility of more drifting, please keep on adding comments on road conditions, especially first thing Tuesday morning.

Tuesday 6-30am Road out of Parwich to Red House all OK to travel, narrow in places with a little ice; to allow passing look for vehicles ahead and oncoming. DS

Police say “Thank You”

Police are thanking mountain rescue teams and members of the community for their help during severe snowy conditions over the weekend.

It is as police continue to take a high number of weather related incidents, especially in more rural parts of the county, with the some of the worst affected areas being in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales. Heavy snowfall on Friday evening made many roads in the area impassable, including the A515 between Ashbourne and Buxton where dozens of motorists became stuck due to drifts and jack knifed lorries.Derby, Edale and Buxton Mountain Rescue Teams helped police to check that drivers were safe and offer assistance, along with a number of local farmers with tractors who worked with highways to clear as much of the road as possible.

The police helicopter was also called out to help a woman who had fallen and broken both of her wrists at Hartington, on Sunday, March 24, as vehicles were unable to get through. Crews transported a paramedic over to the woman, and then both the woman and the paramedic back to an ambulance.

Chief Inspector Tracy Harrison, from the force’s contact management department, said: “The heavy snow fall has meant a higher number of calls to police throughout the county, with numerous reports of motorists becoming stranded as they travelled through the Peak District. We would like to thank mountain rescue teams and all local volunteers for their valued assistance in helping to clear the roads and keep motorists safe, especially at a time when emergency services are stretched due to the volume of calls.”

Here are some photos showing the valiant efforts being made to keep a road out of Parwich clear. Note that even with the snow plough going through, the road out of the village to the B5056 is only passable with great care and good clearance in a 4×4. There have now been several people in 2 wheel drive cars who needed to be towed out.

Although the snow plough clears a route through, the drifting quickly puts snow back on the road. If you leave the village be aware conditions may be much worse on your return.
