This guy looked as bit lost as he was seen staggering down Creamery Lane about 30 minutes ago.

If you see him,  do help him, as he’s going to be the star tonight.  Give your vote and support  to “Guy in Lights”, better than X Factor & Strictly, from 7.30pm, Live on Alsop Road. It’s Bonfire Night!

Well done Wyatt & the Marshalls.

Trick or Treat

Love it or hate it, Parwich does “Trick or Treat” well, it is good-natured and friendly. Tonight there was a real buzz in the air, you could hear children’s voices full of excitement and their footsteps echoing up the path. Lots of effort had been put into the costumes and the enthusiasm of the children was matched by their readiness to say thank you.

Let There Be Light, a children’s event celebrating God’s creation, organised by Revd Andy Larkin, took place today in the Memorial Hall.  Thirty eight children attended and enjoyed activities including a shadow theatre, an ultra-violet light filled maze, decorating gingerbread people, producing a full size decorated image of themselves and a huge joint piece of art celebrating the creation story from the Bible.

The parents enjoyed the excellent cafe provided by Catering 4 Parwich. The only problem was how to get the huge painting into the church, when it was finished! As the children left, they were each given a light stick. To see all the photo’s check out the Peak Five facebook page. A video will be posted soon.

“Thank you all who worked so hard with the planning, organisation and delivery. Especially the parents who unexpectedly found themselves being helpers to cope with the number of children (you know who you are!). Thanks also to all of you who came and supported the event and helped to make it such a great morning. Revd Andy Larkin.”

Although a bit of a distance from our area and not on a direct transport link from Parwich, the following press release from the Peak Park Authority might be of interest to some of our teens:

11 August 2011 – Keen teens needed to bring moorland lore to life

Young people are invited to act out scenes from moorland history to help create a short film in a free five-day drama workshop (August 22-26).

The Moor Memories Project has been recording the recollections of people who lived, worked or walked on the Peak District moors as far back as the 1930s to create a unique archive of moorland life.

Now young people aged 11-16 are invited to re-enact those stories in drama and film-making sessions with professionals from the Point Blank Theatre Company.

The drama workshops will brings scenes like this to life – Peak District National Park warden Ken Drabble and a friend rescuing a sheep in 1955.

Moor Memories Project officer Julia Shergold explained: (more…)

…for there’s a new star in town! It was great to see Parwich’s Hazel B playing such a confident and well-received three-song set this afternoon, in the Acoustic Tent at this year’s Y-Not Festival. This was only Hazel’s second public performance, following her recent debut at the Miners Arms in Brassington, and PARWICH.ORG predicts that she will go far!

This was the third Parwich Panoramic Five Fell Race (PP5) with the best turnout so far, 112 runners. There were 24 clubs represented and 34 non affiliated runners. The overall winner was Chris Nicoll from Derby Tri Club and he just missed the course record by 37 seconds. 28 ladies ran, with the leading lady, Jo Bednall coming in 42nd overall and 70 veterans participated: aged 40+. Four juniors ran, all finishing in the top 78% of the field, with the fastest coming in 28th position aged only 11!

“Best fell race”, “Great course and views”, “Best marked course” and “Friendliest marshalls” were some of the comments that have been made about this year’s race – a tremendous amount of work was put into last night’s events, so these words are very much appreciated.

The event is co-ordinated by Graham J, with a very supportive band of workers, who deliver, fetch, carry, marshal, photograph etc etc.. So big thanks to everyone, who helped, ran and supported this fabulous evening. (Below is Graham busy organising his “troops”!)

The evening also saw the running of the Junior Fell Race which is organised independently by David Denton: another great success. For those youngsters who would like to do more running, just check out his website for more local runs.

Finally a quick plug for next year’s PP5, which is provisionally booked for Tuesday 7th August 2012 – tbc.

Last month we featured a post sent in by Rannoch L, about his trip to South America and his urgent quest for work.

Thank you to Debbie W for sending in this comment,

I just wanted to say that following Rannoch L’s classified advertisement on Parwich.org for work, I hired him to wash my windows and clean the wooden sills, and was not disappointed. He did such a great job. I’ve enjoyed looking through my sparkling windows today! If anyone needs jobs done, I’d highly recommend giving Rannoch a call.

So give him a ring on 661 or email ed_and_nia@yahoo.co.uk to discuss potential jobs and rates.

Ten tennis players from Kenya are in Derby for a couple of days training as part of their tour of the UK. They are being hosted by Rosemary & Stuart and Jill Thornton, and yesterday they braved the rain and were practising on the courts at Parsons Croft.

The players are preparing to compete against a selection of schools in the UK. The team is composed of a selection the current top East African regional players.

Thank you to JF-S for the photos.

Work Wanted

Rannoch Linnell has been offered an amazing opportunity to go with 11 other boys and 2 teachers to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands for a month in summer 2012. Whilst on the Galapagos Islands he will be a volunteer working with a disadvantaged community, this may involve working with local children or helping in building projects. In Ecuador they will be trekking through the Andes, followed by a challenging hike through the Amazon Rainforest to work with local tribesmen.

The planning of the trip is done in co-ordination with the World Challenge organisation, but once abroad the teenagers have to organise everything themselves!

So, Rannoch needs to earn money to pay for the trip. He is willing to do almost anything; labouring, gardening, mowing, decorating, babysitting etc. He is available most Sundays and throughout the school holidays. Give him a ring on 661 or email ed_and_nia@yahoo.co.uk to discuss potential jobs and rates.

Nia has emailed in to say a big thank you to everyone who supported her in the High Peak Marathon, she raised  £1229.38p and as a group they topped £2,500 which is amazing.  This money is going to help Isabelle, a 7 year old who has lost part of all her limbs after being diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia and this is the email from Isabelle’s family…

Just a quick note to say a big thank-you for your fundraising for Isabelle’s trust fund. We were overwhelmed to receive such a significant amount and therefore thank you for all your efforts. It sounds amazing to undertake a run like that – particularly in the dark!

All money raised for Isabelle is going to be spent carefully, and will be used to provide for her throughout her life. Our main objective is to ensure that she is able to live her life as independently as possible, and so for example it may be house adaptations or advanced prosthesis that are necessary. At present it is too early to say what will be possible! We are planning to get a website up and running to keep all Isabelle’s supporters updated on progress and plans.

Again, many thanks!
Olly, Cathy and Isabelle

Thirty five friends took the morning air and walked to Tissington today for the 3rd annual Christmas day walk – some for the first time.  It was a beautiful walk, with perfect blue skies and snow lining the fields.  On arrival at Tissington, a picnic table ladened with nibbles and flasks of coffee and mulled wine greeted the walkers.  Thank you to everyone who provided the goodies – roll on the next walk.
