Bertie Linnell – the young blonde hooligan – has for the last year been the Captain of Ashbourne Rugby Club U9 team. Yesterday he lead them to the final of the NLD (Notts, Leics and Derbys – for the non sporting types….) competition. Unfortunately they were then defeated by West Bridgeford but Bert has consistently been man of the Match and we may have found an outlet for his energies!

bertie-11Ashbourne RUFC  says “The Under 9’s travelled to Newark to participate in the Notts, Lincs & Derbys Cup to take on the best teams from across the three counties. Most of the opposing teams are from much bigger and more established clubs, but Ashbourne displayed maximum quality, effort and determination to come away with a well-deserved runners up spot.

The defeat in the final cannot disguise what was a fantasic achievement by the team to be recognised as the second best Under 9’s team from across the three counties of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.

With the memory of turkey, mince pies and central heating still in their systems, all sections of the 1st Derbyshire Dales Cyberscouts met at Gradbach Scout Camp on January 3rd, to celebrate the start of another year of traditional scouting activities.

Following the opening ceremony around the flag pole, the group enjoyed its first Moving On Ceremonies, which see members developing and moving from one section to another.

There was also the opportunity to recognise the achievements of individual members by awarding skill badges – notably in the areas of creativity and experimentation – whilst the Camp Wardens stoked up the log fires in the stone farmhouse, where some of the day’s activities were to take place… (more…)

Radio Ashbourne and the QEGS Website broadcast the news:

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School will be closed for the whole day…….

The news spread like wildfire throughout the village. Each pupil immediately started thinking how they could do some extra homework and get ahead with their revision. Each pupil immediately thought Yippee! Time to go to to The Sledging Hill!!

A day of enormous fun followed. An igloo was successfully constructed complete with a compressed arch roof. Who needs Physics lessons when you can learn whilst having so much fun!dsc_7104_800x5361 (more…)

Apologies for the late publication regarding this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph. Unfortunately the blog team are a man down, as Peter is not well at the moment.

From Sunday, we will also be losing Christopher – so if you are interested in joining this very friendly, small team, please email us.

  • p3. Keeping with the traditional name – A ‘new’ name for the hospital, but Mrs V Wright from Parwich who submitted two names is quoted as saying, “If that’s what people want then fair comment, but it’s a shame a new building hasn’t got a new name….”.
  • p5. Compost fire firm wins ‘green’ award – Vital Earth which of course has Parwich links through Mr Robert Shields, has won the International Green Hero Award and will now be automatically put forward in European Business Awards for the Environment.  A spokesman for the judges said that they were not aware of the fire incident, but this would not have necessarily affected their decision if they had known. Yesterday 29 of us  attended probably the most important course in our lives – learning how to save a child’s life – that child could be yours!

Course was supported by the Charity ‘Just A Few Minutes’, organized by Alan Gibson consultant neonatologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and staff from Sheffield & Chesterfield Hospitals. We were dealing with the most precious of things, a child’s life, but never has a course seems so compelling and interesting. Considering the seriousness of the subject, at times we were in fits of laughter, especially when faced with some of the ‘real life’ scenarios and the initial ways in which we tried to deal with the situation.  Click on any of the photos to enlarge. Children in NeedWell done to the children making up Parwich School Council for suggesting their fund raising project, and to all the other children who supported them in raising £45-61 in 1p and 2p coins for Children in Need.

Scouting in Parwich

The following was sent to us by the Local History Society:

It seems a shame to let the centenary year of the publication of Baden-Powell’s book “Scouting for Boys” pass by without a mention.  (For notes on the general history of the movement click here to see the Wikipedia entry.)

The Scout Association (UK)Today the Society got a note pointing out that R T Adamson’s book “Seventy-five Years of Scouting in Derbyshire” lists amongst the early troops in Derbyshire a Parwich Troop (first recorded date May 1911) under Scoutmaster R L Tickle.  Coincidentally there is also in today’s Ashbourne News Telegraph an article on the Cyber Scouts (1st Derbyshire Dales Scout Group).

A number of local youngsters are currently involved in the Cyber Scouts.

The Parwich & District Local History Society would like to hear from anyone with information on local Scouting from those early days in 1911 to the present.  Were there also other local troops at Alsop or Pikehall or Ballidon or elsewhere?  Do leave any comments below or email information and/or photographs to parwichhistory@hotmail.com.  If there is sufficient response the Society will include a fuller article in our News Quarterly.

Trick or Treat Take 32

In my heart of heart I don’t really like Halloween, it’s not so much Halloween but the Trick & Treating, it’s yet another Americanism that we have adopted.  However the effort put in by all the callers tonight was amazing from Witches to Devils, Bin Laden to Skeletons – well done to you all.  We had 32 youngsters call, and it was a pleasure to see them all.  Admittedly they were scary, but all had a smile and a thankyou.  I made up 28 bags of sweets and I’m sorry that the final group had to share – I’ll do better next year.

The youth of Parwich do us proud.

Well deserved best wishes to all our A-level and GCSE students

An extra specical well done to Catherine for her 12 A and A* GCSEs (sold short in the Ashbourne Telegraph, and unfortunately also here on PARWICH.ORG, please accept our apologies).  All best wishes to those starting their A-level courses in a weeks time and to those off to University in three weeks or so.  Do let us know how you get on!

Best wishes for A-level results

PARWICH.ORG would like to take this opportunity to wish the young adults of Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich and Pikehall all the best today.  For many of you your entire school career has been aimed at today’s A-level results.  We hope you have got the grades you need to achieve your chosen goals, be it Derby, Leeds or further afield.

We can justifiably feel proud of our young people.  It is infuriating this talk of exams getting easier.  They are different and today you have to work much harder, than in our day.  Fortunately they are also less of a lottery and hard work is more reliably rewarded.  Do let us know how you have got on and where you plan to go next.

Our latest roving reporter Nia is back by popular request:

Fast on the heels of Children’s sports night comes another nerve testing night for parents. First we have to start carbo loading the evening meal for 4 days beforehand and on the night it is a fine balance of eating the right sort of food (slow energy release….) at least 2hrs before they set off. Try getting an over excited child to eat at 5pm when all they want to do is practise their sprint starts and elbow barges!

There is now a great entry from the infant class with the girls all having `gentleman’s` agreements to run together. The boys have a slightly more win at all costs approach. The junior class have a good idea of each others’ potential and have their eyes firmly on the opposition. With no money but fabulous trophies and shields going to the top 3 local boys and girls there is a lot at stake.

The starting line up was buzzing with excitement. Surely Alexander D must be 17 by now or he has been down the gym a lot as no 14 yr old should be that tall and long legged! Little girls holding hands and swearing to help each other ascend the big hill. An interesting collection of running clothes was on show. The full well turned out runner look was on full show, the `I’ve just got back from school and I’m not changing` look made a real come back and then there were the carefully put together racing princess outfits.

On the word GO the children surged forward, trampling over each other in the rush to get to the front. Worried parents were already questioning their parenting skills as they watched their offspring whiz down the road and head ever upwards as the rain clouds gathered menacingly overhead(more…)

Lynne at the Red House writes:

On Wakes Saturday evening, Amy (aged 6) lost her “Next” camouflage-coloured hoody – probably somewhere at the fairground.

If anyone happens to have picked it up, I should be very grateful if you would either hand it to anyone at Parwich school to pass onto her, or call me on 474.

Many thanks to Nia for the following (I can only second her thanks to the Wakes organisers, who are putting so much work into the smooth running of the Week.  Each year I enjoy Wakes more than the last, how do they do it?):

Finally the weather was on the side of the children as they all gathered on a beautifully prepared race track (well it had been until Sunday evening and then the moles got to work… ). The crowd were in fine vocal form and the children put in final practise sessions and honed their techniques for the wheel barrow and 3 legged races.

As in previous years it was always going to be difficult to spot the winners without TV aided photo finishes, so there were numerous spotters on the final tape to ensure that the first 3 over the line received the all important brown envelope and that everyone else was placated with a sweet. Many of the children had been told that if they wanted to go on the fair they needed to win money to pay for it so there was a lot at stake as the children lined up and waited for Dennis to utter the `GO` word(more…)
