The longest day has come and gone. It’s all down hill from here, but hopefully not for your village bowls team. Two excellent wins this week to make up for last weeks disappointment.
Tuesday League.
June 20 – Away – Chatsworth.
Another away match, but it is a very nice place to play. Not sure why, but Chatsworth are struggling this season. We came close to a full house this week. Dot H and John B set the tone with a 21 – 12 win. Dawn and Harry B followed this up with another win 21 – 16. The ever reliable Rick and Edith gave us another brilliant win, 21 – 9. Although Sue and Tony A lost it was only by a couple of points. The final score Chatsworth 58, Parwich 82. Second half of the season next week another away match. This time we are playing the team lying second in the division.
Next Match – Matlock Park – Away – 27 June, 6.30pm.
Thursday League
June 22 – Home – Hope Works, Castleton.
Hope Works have been top of the league since the opening fixture. Could we get close to them in this match. Unfortunately the doubles again proved our downfall. Although Keith B and Clara E came close losing by 21 – 16. We only just managed 19 points from the other two games. After the doubles we were 28 points down!
Could our singles players get us back in the match? Not ‘arf. Harry B and Tony A started us off winning to 6 and 3 respectively. John B followed this up with a 15 – 3 win. Rick and Dawn needed to win well, and win well they did both getting a 15 – 11 result. Although John H lost his match it was only by 1 point. Result Parwich 89, Hope Works 49. Overall result Parwich 124, Hope Works 112. What a turnaround!
Next match – Home – Hazelwood – 29 June – 1.45pm.
We have had a couple of Club tournaments over this passed couple of weeks and some brave sole took a photo or two. The first shows Ian J and Edith victorious after winning the Square Robin. Ian looks just like the cat that’s nicked the cream, bless him. Or it could be he’s got his shower cap handy. The second picture is John H winning the cup for the Open Doubles. Now the eagle eyed of you will notice that John is on his own. Rick who was his partner in the competition is possibly standing behind John or he’d cleared off to the loo and this was the last frame on the film. Can you still get films? Anyway enjoy and well done.
Hope the weather stays good for us at the weekend and we have a bonzer Open Gardens.
John B.

We will be updating the Parwich.org Diary page this weekend, so if you have any Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich or Pikehall events (July, August & September) that you want to go in the Diary in time to be included in the Peak Five Churches Magazine’s July issue, please send them in by Saturday (24th of June). Note, there is not an August issue so after this the next will not be out until September.
Including our Diary in the Church magazine is important as it helps you reach some of those who are not on-line.
Please send Diary information to parwich@hotmail.co.uk or leave me a message on tel. 287.

British summer time officially starts tomorrow June 21st, and with such glorious sunshine over the last few day, perhaps 2017 is going to be a summer to remember. Some of our local photographers have been sending in sightings of insects found in the village, some are harder to identify than others. We wonderered how many different species we typically get in Parwich?
If you spot an unusual insect, why not take a photo and send it to Parwich@hotmail.co.uk, we will create a montage, it could be interesting to see how many species we share our lovely village with.

An almost perfect hexagonal cluster of tiny bright green eggs, each no more than 1 mm, on the underside of a red valerian leaf. Can anyone tell me what these will turn into? I’ve not managed to find the answer yet despite some googling. Thank you Saskia
Can anyone identify these?

Most of us are, I think, are aware of the benefits of eating locally produced, fresh, seasonal foodstuffs over high carbon footprint, air freighted, vacuum packed, tasteless supermarket offerings. So here is a list of foods that are seasonal (so at their best now), many produced locally.
Seasonal produce for June include:
Lots of veg but I think we will struggle to find some of these locally produced even with the current heatwave!-
Broad beans (not in Monty’s garden)
Peas, Courgettes, Asparagus, Lettuce, Cucumber, Radish, Tomatoes, French beans, Mange tout, Chicory, Rocket, New potatoes
These you are more likely to find locally (even in Monty’s garden)-
Elderflower, Strawberries, Raspberries, Cherries
Gooseberries (there are loads of gooseberry recipes here, including gooseberry ginger beers, fool, jam, cheesecakes and a mackerel salad (http://www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/collections/gooseberry-recipes/))
Rhubarb (still)
These definitely not grown locally!-
Mackerel, Sardines, Haddock, Crab
And of course the local speciality –
Lamb (still!)
Recipe Time
I have made this and it’s really nice -simple and fresh (and quick) – it needs a table in the sun and a large glass of crisp dry white to go with it (of course!), so ideal for our current weather.
Charred Fennel, Peas, Prosciutto & Pecorino
Serves 2
Ingredients

- 1 large fennel bulb with fronds
- 400 g fresh peas in the pod (I have used frozen before but they need to be good quality and ideally ‘petit pois’)
- 80 g sliced prosciutto (or parma ham)
- 40 g pecorino
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Juice 1/2 lemon
- Few fennel and/or dill fronds, torn
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Pick of the fronds from the fennel and set to one side.
- Cut the fennel in half from top to bottom, then lay the cut side on the board and cut each had half in lengthways again, but leaving the quarters joined at the root so that the fennel holds together.
Method
Place a heavy-based frying pan over a high hear, while you brush the fennel with oil and season with salt and pepper.- With the pan is smoking, chargrill the fennel on all sides until slightly softened. This should take about 4 minutes on each cut side. You want your fennel to still have a good bite to it, you don’t want it completely soft.
- While the fennel is cooking, bring a large pan of slated water to the boil and have a bowl of ice water to hand.
- Pod the peas and blanch for 1 minute, then refresh in the cold water. Drain and tip into a bowl.
- Once your fennel is cooked allow it to cool slightly and then mix in with the peas. Tear over the fennel fronds (reserving a few to finish the dish) and add the lemon juice and some olive oil.
- Drop the fennel and peas onto your serving plate and give it a gentle shake so that the fennel moves around the plate naturally. Lay the prosciutto lives over the top and use a small knife or peeler to cut nuggets of pecorino to scatter over it. Finish with salt and pepper, more olive oil and a sprinkling of fennel / dill fronds.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Nearly at the longest day and half way through the season. The team is doing well at the moment even though results might not reflect it.
Tuesday League.
June 13 – Away – Ashwood Park.
Because of holidays we were down to a bear minimum team with no players in reserve. The ones who were there, however did us proud. Husband and wife team of Audrey and Harry B got us well on the way with a 21 – 10 win. Clara and Dennis E another husband and wife pair battled well, but were beaten 21 – 13. Edith and Rick rectified the score by a 21 – 12 win. Unfortunately our final pair came unstuck big-time going down 21 – 5. The final overall result was Ashwood 64, Parwich 60. If before the match a score of 64 – 60 was on offer we would have taken their hand off. To only lose by 4 points was excellent. Another away match next week, but it sure is a nice place to play.
Next Match – Chatsworth – Away – 20 June, 6.30pm.
Thursday League
June 15 – Away – Whitworth Park.
Did well in terms of numbers even though quite a few people were on holiday. Unfortunately our doubles pairs could not get close to the opposition and we finished 34 – 63 down. Ian J and Clara E did really well against one of Whitworths best pairs. Similarly Liz H and Rick M got us a creditable 15 points.
The singles games were a struggle, but our new member Keith B played his socks off again and won 15 – 3. Our Edith strutted her stuff to get a 15 – 6 victory and John H also squeaked in 15 – 14 to give us our final singles win.
The final score was Whitworth 131, Parwich 107. Next week we entertain Hope Works who are top of the league. Should be interesting!
Next match – Home – Hope Works – 22 June – 1.45pm.
John B.

Police have thanked the public for their help after their pleas for information led to the arrest of two suspects.
A rural crime alert was sent to residents about a white van seen in the Brassington area which was believed to have been involved in the theft of a quantity of lead from a farm. (This was posted on Parwich.Org on 19 May)
Following the appeal, members of the public came forward with information confirming the identity of van and descriptions of the suspected offenders. Police arrested two suspects within minutes of the message going out.
Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa was responsible for reinstating the Alert messaging system after his election last year.
He said: “This latest success shows how important the Derbyshire Alert system is to gather intelligence and ultimately detect crime.
“I would like to thank the public for their continuing response to the information appeals we issue. Thousands of people have registered with the site since the end of September and the facility is already proving its weight in gold as a crime prevention service.”
One of those who came forward with information that led to the arrest, congratulated the team saying: “Well done, it’s very satisfying to know the system is working for us all.”

Ok so I was working through the list of seasonal foodstuffs and possible recipes and thought I should cut to the chase and get to the best bit first – the drinks!
Following on from the success of my Rhubarb Mojito here’s a couple more ideas incorporating seasonal, locally available ingredients. These will be ideal alongside the mojito for those entertaining during Open Gardens.
Elderflower Cocktail
Ingredients
- 1/2 lemon, juiced
- 1/2 lime, juiced
- 30ml of gin
- Prosecco
- elderflower cordial
- ice
Method
- Fill a cocktail,or wine glass with ice. Add the lemon and lime juice, the gin, then a good splash of elderflower cordial
- Fill the rest of the glass with Prosecco then have a taste (you want about 2/3 Prosecco to 1/3 everything else)
- Add more elderflower if it’s too tart for you. Garnish with a few berries or a few slices of strawberries
Of course at this time of year you can make your own elderflower cordial as the Elderflowers are blooming everywhere around the area.
Strawberry Lemonade
Ingredients
- 300g (10oz) hulled strawberries
- 300g (10oz) caster sugar
- Juice 5 lemons
- Still or sparkling mineral water, to dilute
- Sliced limes and strawberries, and sprigs of mint, to serve
Method
- Put the hulled strawberries, caster sugar and lemon juice into a blender and pulse until smooth.
- Strain the mixture through a sieve into a large bowl and stir thoroughly to ensure all the sugar dissolves.
- You can transfer the cordial to a large bottle or storage container until needed.
- Dilute with still or sparkling water (about 1 part cordial to 4 parts water) and serve with ice, lime and strawberry slices and sprigs of mint.
and the best bit – If you fancy making it into a cocktail, simply add vodka to taste!
Stay tuned for some recommendations of seasonal foods and recipes
Mich x

A home needs to be found for Billy, a black and white cat who is currently in the care of Cheadle Animal Welfare Society.. He doesn’t like being cooped up in a pen while a home is found for him as he loves the outdoors. Billy is very much an independent cat, preferring his own company. He doesn’t want to be fussed, he just wants to be left alone to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it. He needs a home where he can be looked after but live outside with a dry safe place to sleep and eat. It needs to be a home where there are no children or other cats and most importantly one which is in the country. Billy is microchipped and neutered. Anybody interested in finding out more about Billy can ring 01335 390369 or email cheadleanimalwelfare@hotmail.co.uk

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
I suppose you have to be careful what you wish for. There’s losing, there’s losing badly, and then there is capitulating and no money changed hands, honest! At least we got back into winning ways in one league.
Tuesday League.
June 6 – Home – Matlock Bath.
If somebody had said that it had been November 5 the previous night there would not have been any disagreement. It was pretty cold wet and miserable. To cap it all we lost really well, which was no bad thing really. We did have one astounding win with Pat and John B scoring 21 – 0. Edith and Rick also played their usual game, but they did have to come from behind to win 21 – 20. Unfortunately our other two pairs were well beaten. The final score was Parwich 56, Matlock Bath 62. To rub an enormous amount of salt into our already large sores we had 10 points deducted by Godzilla, our league secretary, because we made a tiny error in the date on the score sheet. It also meant that our opponents also had to suffer a 10 point reduction. Such is life on a Crown Green! Next week we play the top of the league and we have 4 players on holiday. Oh ‘eck!
Next Match – Ashwood Park – Away – 13 June 6.30pm.
Thursday League
June 8 – Home – Tideswell
For the first time this year we had more than 12 people who wanted to play! Bear in mind we only have 16 members all told. Tideswell were just one place ahead of us in the league with a lead of 21 points.
Our new member, Keith B played with Audrey B in the doubles and had a convincing win 21 – 10. Dennis E and Liz H also fought hard to just lose 19 – 21. Ian J playing with Dot H in the third game ricked his back very badly early on, but kept battling and they came a very creditable second. After the doubles the score was Parwich 51, Tideswell 52.
As you devotees of this scintillating editorial will know the doubles are followed by 6 singles games. We did very well with Edith and Rick each winning their respective games to 3 and 4. Only one loss here and that was by just 3 points. The singles gave us 87 to Tideswell 49. The final score Parwich 138, Tideswell 101. The 31 point win means that we will go just above them in the league.
Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 15 June – 1.45pm.
