Our weatherman on the hill says:

Cool, mainly cloudy, with rain at times, becoming very windy from the south west on Tuesday.

With Christmas fast approaching, we have a busy week to look forward to. Festive events are well to the forefront, with highlights including three performances of The Magical Christmas Box at the school (on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), followed by the ever-popular Carols on the Green on Thursday, where we shall be joined by the Ashbourne Band. Minced pies and mulled wine will also be available.

Our Christmas film, The Chronicles of Narnia, will be screened on Friday, and there will be more opportunities for carol singing at the school’s Christmas service on Thursday, and at next Sunday’s two carol services in Parwich and Alsop.

Over at the Legion, Santa Claus will be making his appearance next Sunday. (Warning: He knows if you’ve been bad or good. So be good, for goodness sake!) Meanwhile, The Sycamore have a Christmas darts knockout tournament this afternoon, and a pub quiz next Saturday from 5pm, hosted by the holidaymakers of Uppermoor Farm.

Parwich blacksmith Hayley Powell (of Forever Forged) is featured in an illustrated feature in the new edition of Country Homes & Interiors magazine, which is out today. Some of the photos in the feature, which is spread over several pages, were taken in Parwich.

Hayley will also be speaking on BBC Radio Derby at 12:15 tomorrow (Friday), in an interview which will be conducted from the forge at Claymills Victorian Pumping Station.

Parwich Primary School: snow procedures.

Head teacher Caroline Rodgers writes:

I need to remind some parents and inform our new parents what to do in the event of snow!

The decision to close school is never taken lightly; several factors dictate such measures, the health and safety of our children and staff is a priority, given the remote setting of the village. The decision is made through discussion with our Chair of Governors.

If it snows overnight, please tune into BBC Radio Derby (104.5 FM), check their website or tune into Ashbourne Radio (96.7 FM) to hear if school is closed.

If you hear nothing, assume school is open and we will be expecting your child.

It is more difficult when it starts snowing during the day. Usually some of our parents, who live out of the village or high up, give us some warning that things are getting bad. Once a decision is made to send children home, we will contact you by phone, then you or a representative must come and collect the children.

Please make sure that your details held here at school are up to date. In these days of voicemail and answer phones, it has become more difficult for us to contact parents quickly. Please make sure, you tell us how we can get hold of you quickly.

Thumbs Up for The Horns!

I just wanted to say  that all the volunteers from the Cancer Research shop in Ashbourne had their  annual Christmas meal at The Horns this evening and it was fantastic!

I don’t go out to  eat very often, and hadn’t been to the Horns before.  It is so clean and  inviting inside, and we had a wonderful welcome from Callum and staff.  The  tables were set nicely and included crackers that were not horrible and cheap  but really nice!

The food was  delicious.  On our table people had:  pate, soup, prawns and mushrooms – all of which were delicious, especially the pate.  The main courses  included:  pork, beef, turkey and mushroom lasagne – they were really  delicious, the veggies cooked perfectly (the sprouts were the best I’ve ever  had!); finally the desserts were scrummy.  The portion sizes were just  right.  Most amazing was the price – just £14.99 which included  coffee!

So hats off and  Happy Christmas to The Horns – well done!

Oil Prices

We’ve just ordered some heating oil to top up before Xmas. I thought I’d just pass on the information that:

a) there seems to be a big differential in price between suppliers (EMO – 70p/litre incl VAT, PEAK – 65p/litre) and

b) both companies said the prices were currently heading upwards rapidly.

Peak Park Budget Announcement

Key areas protected from budget cuts
Extra money is to be spent by the Peak District National Park Authority supporting the local economy, communities and the environment despite budget cuts.
The authority has to make cuts of £1.8 million over four years from its £7.8 million budget.
In 2012/13 the authority needs to make permanent savings of £354,000 towards the four year total. Continue Reading »

The Peak District National Park Authority is to increase spending to protect the national park from damage by 4x4s and trail bikes.

At the Authority meeting yesterday, members agreed to allocate an extra £100,000 over the next two years to:

• Resolve problems faster. • Speed up production of route action plans to manage the tracks. • Create the capacity to potentially deal with more Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) to conserve the landscape’s natural beauty and wildlife. • Improve engagement with user groups and local communities. • Involve volunteers more. • Contribute to the work of partners in monitoring and reporting illegal use. Film Night for Christmas

Return to the magic and wonder of C.S. Lewis’ beloved world The Chronicles of Narnia — via the fantastic Narnian ship, the Dawn Treader. Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their cousin Eustace, their royal friend King Caspian and a warrior mouse named Reepicheep, find themselves swallowed into a painting and onto the Dawn Treader. Their mission — on which rests the fate of Narnia itself — takes the courageous voyagers to mysterious islands and a river that turns to gold, to fateful confrontations with magical creatures and sinister enemies and to a reunion with their friend and protector, the “Great Lion” Aslan.
