The Horticultural Society is very grateful to Bill Whitfield of Leatherbritches Nursery for kindly judging the baskets at 17 houses. It was good to see such a fine display. Here are the four that Bill considered were the best.
Joint 1st prize – Jack Cundy, Main Street
Joint 1st prize – Ben and Jane Bennett, Croft Avenue
2nd prize – Margaret and Roy Lynam, Rathbone Croft
3rd Prize – Wendy and Larry Birds, Lenscliffe

There are just 3 1/2 weeks to go before the Horticultural Show on Sunday 5th September. Over the next week we will be publishing details of the different classes. Remember if you are a jam or chutney maker, get picking now. Below are the new, novelty classes, so the men can start practising their trifles and all photographers can start snapping.
It’s a local event, which is just a bit of fun, but hardwork goes into setting it up, so please do support the day, either by entering or by buying the produce at the auction.

There is a photographer coming into Toddler group on Fri 13th at 2.30pm in the Memorial Hall if anyone wants to bring their child/ren along. Though primarily aimed at the younger children, older siblings are also welcome. No need to book just turn up on Friday.
If in doubt, email parwich@hotmail.co.uk and the Team will pass on any queries. The photographer will send proofs before you commit to ordering photos.

There will be an interruption to the water supply to Parwich this week for mains cleaning (Severn Trent ref DMA 14-122). The notice I received (on the Green) stated the following times:
- Tuesday 10th August: from 9pm to 6am
- Wednesday 11th August: from 9pm to 6am
- Thursday 12th August: from 9pm to 6am
Do let us know (via parwich@hotmail.co.uk or in a comment below) if you have different days or times, and how large an area is involved. Last time there was an interruption to the supply not everyone got a letter. If your water is cut off beyond the notified times or you are not give 48 hours notification of scheduled work you may be entitled to compensation. Severn Trent can be contacted on tel. 0800 783 4444, for more information.
While the water supply is disrupted Severn Trent say not to try to use any mains water, including flushing toilets and hot water. So you will need to set up emergency supplies. One option for flushing toilets is to fill the bath in advance with cold water and then use buckets to flush the toilet. Do you have any other useful tips?
PS Be careful not to leave any taps turned on during the interruptions. Last time at least two households were flooded as a result of this with the water coming back on in the middle of the night at higher pressure.

The increased entry this year (107 runners in the senior event and the junior events more than doubled) has had a positive effect on the money raised from the race evening from £ 313.00 in 2009 to £ 448.55 this year, which will go toward the Memorial Hall as it did last year. It is envisaged that this will go towards display boards, for use by Stepping Stones and other groups.
There are so many people to thank that it would be a difficult task to list them all, but special thanks go to all the marshals, the first aiders, the ladies on registration who kept working on the timesheets long after the race was over, all our roving photographers and Sandra who organized a raffle which raised £65.00.
We received a lot of positive feedback from the runners who commented on the quality of course marking, marshaling and slick registration. Thanks to all – we are already looking forward to next year.

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 2 August 2010.
Tuesday League – Home – Baslow.
Baslow are second in the league and we never seem to do well against them. However, things changed this week. The maximum points you can get in this league is 84 ( 4 doubles first to 21). So far our best had been 81, this week we got a full house. On top of this resounding score we restricted Baslow to only 36 points. Well done to all concerned. Let us hope we don’t come down with a bang next week.
Next match – Home – Bradwell 10 August 6.30 ish.
Thursday League – Home – Chatsworth.
Chatsworth always have a good game against us. In the doubles games we only won one out of three. The singles games, however, came to our rescue winning 5 out of the six games.
The total score being 120 to Parwich and 109 to Chatsworth.
No match next week in the Thursday League. The day is given over to the ‘Greenaway’ tournament. This is an annual game where all members of the league get together either at Wirksworth or Whitworth Park to play this Charity game. The tournament has been going for a considerable number of years and has raised thousands of pounds for the Greenaway Centre.
Let us hope that the weather keeps fine and we raise lots more cash.
On Sunday we play our last club match. The Round Robin. It starts at 10.30am. Why not come down have a look.

Over the past few weeks sheep keep appearing on the B5056, but today Pennie B has sent a comment in. I don’t know if anyone has reported this, but it could be quite a hazzard, and not just to the sheep!
Lots of sheep out on the road from Bradbourne to the main road this morning!

Please note that signs are up reporting a further planned closure of the A515 between Fenny Bentley and Sandybrook tomorrow Thursday 5th August 2010 – 6pm to 6am.
To avoid this you will need to go via Nether Bradbourne/Kniveton or via Thorpe.
I did note today that our brilliant new section of the B5056 is worryingly starting to develop some potholes along the edges of the road on both sides, though more markedly on the south bound lane. So take care.

Accompanied by three glam marshalls, the roving parwich.org photographer stationed himself at the top of one of the steepest hills in the Panoramic Five. This was to ensure the runners were looking their best as their pictures were taken!

It was remarkable how fresh the athletes looked as they reached the top. Pretty impressive stuff!

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB
It is a well fact that when your electronic hydrospidroculating spring breaks, it takes some time to make a new one (i.e. the computer broke). Here are the results for the past couple of weeks. Bet you missed them terribly!
Week commencing 19 July 2010.
- Tuesday League – Home – Whitworth Park.
Not a bad result. Although the games were split two each, we managed to accumulate more points in each game.
The final score was 72 to 63.
- Thursday League – Away – Matlock Park.
A very close away match which we only just lost 125 to our 123.
Week commencing 26 July 2010.
- Tuesday League – Away – Matlock Bath.
This green is very small and is shaped somewhat like a fifty pence piece. We did not do very well, We lost three games to one with the result 77 to our 58.
With just five games left to play in the season, we are hanging on to seventh place out of twelve.
Next match – Home – 3 August – Baslow. 6.30ish.
- Thursday League – Away – Baslow.
We never seem to do very well at Baslow! And this match was no exception.
We did not win any doubles games, however we did win five out of the six singles games.
The final score was a win for Baslow 134 to 130.
Again with five matches left we are in sixth place in the league.
Next match – Home – 5 August – Chatsworth 1.45pm.

The A515 is closed south of the Bentley Brook going into Ashbourne from about 7pm to 5am for resurfacing. We’d missed seeing the advance warning signs and at that stage it can be a real pain, so use the Bradbourne route to Ashbourne. Work is scheduled to finish by Monday.
There are also traffic lights back on the B5056, it looks like they are putting fencing up on the north side of the road, maybe it will stop the sheep roaming onto the road.
Any updates are welcome.

I just wondered if anyone knows of a good walking route over to Brassington? We were hoping to walk from Parwich to the Olde Gate pub. If anyone could help it would be appreciated.

Please put any route suggestions into the comments box – but don’t forget to use your name, so it could be John Smith, J Smith or John S.

Children can try being a lead miner, meet characters from the past, and enjoy things that go boom, bang or squelch at a free archaeological family fun day at the 270-year-old Magpie Mine, Sheldon, on Saturday July 31, 10.30am-3pm.
Peak District National Park rangers and the Peak District Mines Historical Society are staging “Magpie Mayhem,” with activities for adults and children alike.
The event is part of the Festival of British Archaeology and National Parks Week, and will include a guided tour of the site by the National Park’s senior survey archaeologist, John Barnatt.
The Peak District Mines Historical Society, which owns and manages Magpie Mine, will display scale models and genuine mining artefacts to help explain the archaeology and will talk about their work on site.
National Park area ranger Lynn Burrow said: “Magpie Mine has a really colourful history, including conflict and tragedy in the 1830s as rival groups of miners tried to smoke each other out. We’ll be helping families explore their local history with an interactive discovery trail, and children can become a lead miner, meet historical characters, make “bradder” hats and enjoy games and activities. Families can bring a picnic and make a day of it.”
No need to book, just turn up on the day. Magpie Mine is a mile or so from Monyash, so about 20 minutes from Parwich.
