Summer Pilates

Pilates is continuing over the summer school holidays on 28th July, 11th August, 18th August and 1st September from 6.30pm – 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Please note there will be no classes on 4th or 25th August. The cost is £6.50 per session payable at the class.

…..
The autumn term classes will start on 8th September. It may be that we now have sufficient numbers to go back to 2 classes in the autumn, so if you are interested in starting then please could you let me know. For all enquiries over the holidays please contact Georgie directly on 07976 254 887.

If of interest – don’t foget there will be a Specialist Plant Fair at Osmaston Park on 25 July 2010.
The fair will open from 10am-4pm.

Admission is £2.00, with a percentage of proceeds being donated to the PEAK DISTRICT MOUNTAIN RESCUE ORGANISATION.

Refreshments will be available.

Further details are available on www.flowerpowerfairs.co.uk, or call 07730 859441.

Earlier this year Ian Pitts, metal detecting in Hallcliffe garden, found a small gold signet ring.  With the date from the hallmarks I started ringing round the previous occupants of the house.

Today the ring was taken to Malcolm and Ruth in Alstonfield, who confirmed it had been made for Ruth by her parents out of gold from the wedding rings of both her grandmothers.  The ring was inscribed with Ruth’s initials, but these are very worn and only identifiable under a magnifying glass.  Their oldest son particularly remembers how distressed his mother was when the ring was lost.  Certainly she was pleased to get it back after some 25 to 30 years.

The Summer Music

Thank you to John F-S for these photos taken at last Saturday’s concert by the de Parys Trio (Eric Hill on guitar, Jill Hughes on flute and Martin Hughes on violin).

With a range of music, including Bach, Gluck, Paganini, Carulli, Rossini and others, there was something for everyone from classical through romantic to tango and jazz.  Though numbers were a little down on last year the evening could hardly have been better.  The only fly in the ointment was a potential clash with the musical neighbours, but they generously suspended activity ’til the concert was over.

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 12 July 2010.

Mixed fortunes again this week. One win one loss.

Tuesday League – Away – Hathersage.

On occasions you have to confess that playing bowls when it is heaving it down with rain and blowing a gale is not necessarily the best pastime. This was such an occasion. It was not pleasant!!

We had lost to Hathersage at home earlier in the season and we were not looking forward to the reverse fixture. We should not have worried. We won by 80 to 62, which was, all bar one point, the exact opposite of the loss we suffered at home.

Next match – Home – Whitwirth Park – 20 July – 6.30

Thursday League – Home – Lafarge Cement Hope.

Even though we lost we gave a reasonable account of ourselves. Lafarge are a lot higher in the league than us and a much bigger club.

We won one out of the three doubles games and shared the singles three games each. However the games Lafarge won were won by a greater margin and the final score was 112 to 131.

Next match –Away – Matlock Park – 22 July. 1.30 ish.

You are still allowed to come along to the green. It is better than going to the dentist! And it does not cost a thing.

We are having a club tournament on Sunday called a ‘Square Robin’ come and have a look. We will be on the green at around 10.30 am.

We are converting 2 stone barns at Pikehall into workspace/studio/office. Initially there is 2800sq/ft, with a 20ft by 10ft tempcontrolled spray booth (previous tenant did spray work on motor bikes).  This unit is on two floors and could be subdivided into 2 or even 4 units.  Further space of approximately 2100 sq/ft is awaiting development.

Summer Recess Update from our MEP

Bill Newton Dunn our MEP has emailed in his report for work carried out in the European Parliament. As any of us may not be aware of what our MEP’s do, you might like to read on.

Just to let you know that the European Parliament stops work at the end of this week. It will re-meet in Brussels on Monday 30th August. I expect to remain in the UK – so, if needed, can be reached at bill.newtondunn@europarl.europa.eu

The parliament’s work for the past six months has principally been about putting into effect the Lisbon Treaty (which came into effect in December).

In February, the new team of Commissioners took office. One of them, Baroness Ashton, was appointed High Representative for Foreign Affairs and has set about vigorously setting up the new “EU External Action Service” with EU embassies in most capitals of the world, to be staffed half by Commission officials, half by seconded national officials.

In March, MEPs threw out the “SWIFT” treaty. This had been agreed by the 27 national governments – whereby they would hand over to the US government access to all Europeans’ bank accounts – without any reciprocal arrangement for us to see into American bank accounts. MEPs shocked the governments and Washington by using new Lisbon powers to reject international treaties. “SWIFT” has been renegotiated, with much stronger safeguards for Europeans, and MEPs passed it last week.

The economic crisis continues. As always, Europe moves forward after a crisis, and this will result in stronger economic powers for Brussels. Britain – with its huge budget deficit – is in no position to gloat.
Have a good summer !

Bill

Local History website back on-line

The Parwich & District Local History Society website is now back on-line.  We had had problems with our previous host and are now trying out justhost.com.  Their charges are impressively low.  Our site has a new address www.parwichhistory.org and we hope to continue to develop it, so do let us know any thoughts or ideas you have.

The Society can be contacted on parwichhistory@hotmail.com.  We will try to up-date all the links here at parwich.org though we may miss some of the older posts (if so our apologies).

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 5 July 2010.

Mixed fortunes this week. One win and one loss, although we did play well in both games.

Tuesday League – Home – Chatsworth.

We managed to win two of the games, but lost two as well. Our points tally however was just a bit better than the opposition. The final result was 69 to 52.

It is ironic that last week in this league we had our lowest score, but still went up a place in the table! The teams around us had even poorer scores than we did.

Let’s see how we fair this week.

Next match – Away – Hathersage – 13 July – 6.30

Thursday League – Away – Bakewell.

This is a really strange green. Very long and thin. In Crown Green bowls you can send your ‘woods’ in any direction. Up and down or corner to corner, the choice is yours. At Bakewell however because the green is so narrow it is almost like playing ‘Flatgreen’ bowls, you have to play up and down.
Anyway, suffice it to say we were beaten quite comprehensively. We won one out of three in the doubles and two out of six in the singles, making the total score 137 to Bakewell and 111 to us. It could have been worse!

Next match –Home – Lafarge Hope works – 15 July. 1.30 ish.

Cleaning Query

May I please pick the brains of the good people of this village please…

I need to have our living room carpet cleaned – it is disgusting! Does anyone know of any companies that do carpet cleaning, or can anyone recommend a machine/system which I can rent (to do myself) which actually works?

Also, I need to have two dresses altering. Is there anyone in the village that does that?

Thanks so much,

Debbie

The clothes alterations might be something Cottage Curtains (see our local trade directory) are interested in, but if anyone has any answers to this query please add a comment below.

Yesterday the East Midlands Development Agency issued a press release about grants that rural communities and businesses can bid for to support “in upgrading existing Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) infrastructure, and enable the early use of next generation solutions”. For the full press release Continue Reading »

Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team Governance Meeting
Minutes from the meeting – 16th June 2010, 7.30pm at Thorpe Village Hall

PCSO Kate Cleveley opened the meeting and the Minutes from the last meeting were distributed.  An amendment was made regarding attendance at the previous meeting.

Parking at Tissington Village
KC attended a meeting at Tissington Hall on 9/6/10 to discuss forming of a working party to find a solution to parking issues in the village. This will be known as the Traffic Management Plan (TMP). Fiona Attenborough (PA at Tissington Hall) will be coordinating an action plan to include all interested parties. Cattle Grids at entrance to Tissington village have now been replaced by DDDC Highways.  This was completed quickly and efficiently although there was a brief road closure.

Priority Profile Update
KC informed the meeting that there were still no new Priority Profiles in the area.

Kniveton school parking issues were still ongoing and letters had been sent out to all parents informing them of the dangers of their actions. Regular visits to monitor the situation at appropriate times would continue.

Mobile patrols would continue around the Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team area.

KC offered information regarding Community Speed watch and that this could take place in any of the villages if requested. Continue Reading »

Eaton Dale Walk this Saturday

Did you see anything?

Shortly before 4.10pm on the afternoon of Saturday 3rd July, two persons entered Avanti jewellers on Dig Street, Ashbourne. Both persons were wearing crash helmets. Upon entering the jewellers both offenders have produced weapons and smashed through security glass at the front of the store. A quantity of jewellery was taken in this incident and the offenders made off in the direction of Shawcroft car park. It is believed that the offenders made off on a small red motorcycle which was abandoned on the road between Thorpe & Dovedale, therefore, another vehicle believed to be involved.

Police are appealing for witnesses to this incident to contact Derbyshire Police on 0345 123 33 33 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with any information that may assist this enquiry.

Please be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.

Thank you.
