Due to the adverse weather conditions, school will be closed on Thursday 2nd December. The school hopes to reopen on Friday 3rd December.
This information will also be announced on Radio Derby and Ashbourne Radio.

We have received the following from the Headmistress of Parwich School:
Dear School Choir,
It is with huge regret that in view of deteriorating weather conditions David Lewis (Founder of Young Voices) has made the decision to POSTPONE the Young Voices Concerts from the 1st, 2nd & 3rd December to alternative dates in the New Year.
All tickets are fully transferable at no additional cost; please keep your original tickets safe until further information is made available.
The children`s safety is the overriding concern of school and as the concert organiser, there really is no choice in this matter given the adverse weather conditions across the county.
Once we have confirmed the new dates school will make the necessary arrangements and inform parents.

Update: 2nd Dec – Has been cancelled due to the bad weather. A smaller fair may be rescheduled, which our own Delia Pegg hopes to have a stall at.
There is a Christmas Fayre in Wetton on Sunday 5th December from 11.00 am.
The fayre is being held in the church, the village hall and a nearby marquee. Stalls and entertainment include:

11am There has been a steady fall of snow this morning, with more still to come. Thanks to Graham J for this update on the roads:
Dale Road and Alsop Road tricky this morning – no grit, probably only passable in 4×4. A515 to Buxton passable with care, snow blowing across in drifts at the usual locations (Parsley Hay, Flagg). Buxton side roads are bad.

With the heavy snow Parwich Primary School has been closed today (30th Nov 2010):
On advice from parents and Health & Safety we have made the decision to close the school.

This photo was taken at about 7:30 on Saturday morning, near the sledging field. It was in fresh snow and was about 12 inches at its widest point. Most likely it was a bird about to take off – two feet and tail feathers possibly – or have we received a close encounter of some other kind?

Following the recent post, thank you to Heather for updating us on her next jewellery stall:
I will be selling my jewellery next Saturday 4th December between 9am and 2pm at the Wirksworth Farmer’s Market. I am sharing a stall with my friend Laurie who also makes jewellery. This market is held on the first Saturday of every month and has previously offered a range of locally produced goods such as fresh produce, plants and other crafts. Hope to see you there.

Though we have not had a lot of snow so far, as Cheryl W pointed out in her recent comment, the roads are dangerously icy. The crash on the B5056 could have been much worse than it fortunately was. The car can not have been that far from going off the road down the steep hillside.
With temperatures this morning the coldest on record locally, and likely to be as bad or even worse tonight, watch out for ice tomorrow morning.

Our weatherman on the hill predicts:
Another very cold week to come, with daytime frost on some days and light snow showers on Tuesday, Wednesday,and
Thursday possible.For the record, last night (27/28 November ’10) was the coldest I have recorded in over ten years of keeping stats for Parwich at minus 11.2 centigrade.
It is interesting to note the difference in the temperatures between the two weather stations, one at the top of the village and the other by the Church, some 1.7 degrees. The cold air certainly fell down to the bottom of the valley, last night.

Many thanks to Graham J, who sent us the following email:
Last night was the coldest recorded by our live village weather station which has been recording data since the beginning of 2007. At 6:30am this morning the temperature had dropped to a staggering low of 12.9 degrees below zero Celsius. This is over 4 degrees cooler than the previous low of -8.8 degrees C recorded on 7th January earlier this year. Traveling back from Ashbourne at around midnight last night, our car external temperature gauge fell to -15 degrees C at Bradbourne Mill (a consistent cold trap area, typically 3-5 degrees colder than Parwich on a still night). One wonders what the low at 6:30am would have been there?

For many it was quite a surprise to look out of the window on Saturday morning and see the perfect powdery covering of snow.
For the photographers of Parwich, snow offers a great opportunity to capture the village in its sparkling glory. Of course John F-S – the master of Parwich photography – was out and about early.
For others, the snowy weather can make life more difficult. This is especially true for the farming community whose animals still need caring for. The Kirkhams are pictured here making sure the animals on Back Lane are well fed.
One animal feed supplier had a particularly bad day. Not only did the tanker need pulling out of the village, but it also lost a wing mirror as it came back down the hill at Townhead! Repairs were needed before the vehicle could make its way back out of the village.

PDHS 2010 AGM
CHAIRMANS REPORT
A very successful year for the society despite the doom predicted after missing a main show in 2009.
We were lucky enough to be the 1st users of the new memorial hall which opened the Thursday before Open Gardens. This proved to be a fabulous venue for showcasing the childrens work and also for the wonderful cream teas. Entries were down on the childrens show despite the help and guidance the school has been receiving from members of the society in their school garden but hopefully this has been rectified for next year. A number of new gardens were opened and they all looked stunning. There were many 1st time visitors to the village and many commented on how wonderful the event was. Continue Reading »

We went to the opening night 19th November and stayed overnight at the Seaton Lane Inn, Seaham, County Durham SR7 0LP tel 0191 581 2038, a delightful Inn with excellent accommodation and most comfortable beds, this is owned by the brother of Joanne Jewitt, Adrian Marshall. It was only 7 miles from the Empire Theatre and the Taxi was just £10.40. A great atmosphere and great food. The journey by car was 3 hours, I had thought of running a coach but it would be probably 4 hours and therefore reconsidered that cars would be better.

Just to let you know that although the roads around Parwich are bad, the A515 north to Buxton is totally clear. The A52 to Derby has a layer of packed snow, and travel is very slow.
