Vacancy for part-time groom

We have a vacancy for a part time groom/yard person. The hours are four hours on Wednesdays and Sundays.  The vacancy is to cover someone on sick leave for about four months but could possibly be for longer.

The job involves mucking out stables, rugging up horses and leading them in and out to fields. The applicant would need to be confidant handling large horses. The ability to smile in the face of adversity, snow, wind and rain would be welcome. The upside is a good sun tan in the summer.

If you are interested then please phone for more details.  Alice Beasley 390206

Can you help?

Can anyone help? I’ve had 6 Memorial Hall tables in my office since December 09! 3 large and 3 small. I borrowed them after the Christmas Church Fete, and then used them in January, but unfortunately it would appear they no longer have a home! Do you have space in your garage or shed where they could go till the Memorial Hall is completed? I would be most grateful as it is a bit of tight squeeze at our place!

Thanks Debbie

Week 20 & 21 – Photodiary

The weather continues to be our enemy, with stoning and block work only happening when the temperature is suitable.  However, lots of jobs are still continuing.  All the block work is almost to roof level, this means that the woodwork for the roof over the foyer and toilets is being put in place.  All the internal walls are in situ, so it is now recognisable as a main hall with meeting room, toilets, kitchen and foyer.    The first photo shows the end wall of the kitchen block, nearest the Legion and has been built by Phil and his brother John from Longnor.  The other photo is looking down on the kitchen and shows the meeting room; the gap where it is angled will be glass doors opening onto the patio.

Thank you to Robert (Site Manager) for these photos.

Oil co-operative: an update from Debbie.

Hi all,

I have been ringing around the oil companies today trying to find out about minimum orders, discounts to be expected on orders, etc.

Doing a percentage discount based on size of order (my preferred method of discount) doesn’t seem to be an option so far – although I’m still ringing around. It would seem one is always going to have to ring around on the day before delivery to find out the price.

It seems to me that to obtain the biggest discount possible, we need to match like with like on the oil tank front. We probably need two co-ops rather than one.

People with tanks that are 6 wheel tank accessible and need to buy at least 500 litres minimum would be a good match on one co-op front.

People who have tanks with restricted access (ie are accessible only by a 4 wheel rather than 6 wheel vehicle) and/or need order less than 500 litres of oil would be a good match for another co-op.

The reason for this is the discount is based on delivering the most fuel in as few stops or ‘drops’ as possible. The cost to the oil company is not simply bringing the oil from the depot to the village, but every single stop takes time and therefore adds to the cost. So even if you have an accessible tank, if you only need 300 or 400 litres of fuel, you are adding a drop. If we get a co-op order of 10,000 or 15,000 litres, but there are 17 drops, we are not going to get any discount at all!

Another problem that has arisen in the past is that people say they need 500 litres, but don’t really – they perhaps need only 300 litres. So then the tanker has to go back to the depot with fuel still on board, and if that tanker needs to fill up with diesel for truckers or something, the whole thing needs to be emptied. That is why it is better for the smaller orders to all go together, rather than tacked on to the bigger orders.

The biggest discount is going to go deliveries of 10,000+ litres in 10 or less drops. You’ll probably save roughly 2p per litre, maybe a bit more or a bit less, depending on how far we can wear them down!

People who have 500 or less litres of oil delivered pay significantly more for their oil. The price for having 500 litres from Halso was £41.90 per litre vs £39.90 for 1,000 litres. This is before any discount.

So you can see why people with larger tanks going together, and people with smaller tanks going together makes bargaining with the oil companies easier, because you are comparing like with like.

I’m still getting information together, but thought it was worth updating everyone on what I had learnt so far.

I do need to order oil, and I would be interested to hear from people who do not have restricted access and need at least 500 litres of oil.

I may be giving out information that people already know – so sorry about that if I’m preaching to the converted – it was all new to me. Also, if you know anyone who is interested in the co-op but not online, please pass the message on to them.

– Debbie W.

LATEST UPDATE: For comparative prices, useful phone numbers and an offer to start an ordering group for anyone ordering 900+ litres at a time (with no access issues), please see these further comments from Debbie.

This Week in The Stunner

As always you can buy The Ashbourne News Telegraph in The Sycamore or read it online.

p1,2,3 – Down’ards took the lead on the 1st day.  After a slow but arduous battle in the town centre the surprise goal came at about 6.30pm.  There was a dramatic break by 16 year old Adam Cundy, who scooped the ball in the darkness and left everyone dumfounded by his lightning pace as he charged for Clifton, before handing over to goal scorer, Kevin Clarke.

p1,6 – £2 million plan for new high-tech library. “Sooner than later,” quoted Cllr Lewer.

p17 – Art Exhibition looking for new artists to showcase their masterpieces.  This free exhibition will be held at Ashbourne Town Hall from Saturday 19th – Thursday 24th June.  If you are interested in participating please ring 348707 or email info@ashbournefestival.org

Please email in anything else that you think we should have included.

Alsop Road improvements.

The comment that Cheryl put on yesterday about the mud that has been dragged onto the road is true, but fortunately the weather so far has not made an adverse impact.

The good news is that Derbyshire County Council have been along the Alsop Road filling many of the deepest edges with chatter.  True, it does look a bit of a mess, but at least we won’t have to hold our breath whilst pulling over for other vehicles: wondering how deep the holes are and the danger to our tyres.

Tuesday 9.30pm – Having just driven back from Kniveton, snow is settling on the roads. Please take care in the morning.  Hopefully the temperature will have warmed up and the snow will have gone, but in places it is wet, so this could present an additional problem with ice.  Keep the blog up to date.

Andy spies on Secret Sunday activities…

Well, well, well… what’s going on here then?

An invitation from Andy Larkin

Memorial Hall Newsletter, February 2010.

Please click here for a printer-friendly version of this newsletter, in PDF format. Printed copies will be posted on village notice boards shortly.

Since the last newsletter circulated in August/September 2009, things have moved apace, and much hard work is being rewarded by our Hall finally taking shape. Information on the build continues to be posted on the notice board adjacent to the Hall outlining detailed progress and plans, and those who have checked on http://www.parwich.org will have been kept up to date with progress through the comprehensive weekly photo diary published.

The estimated completion date is presently mid May with the delay due to the ongoing severe weather we are experiencing. The delay will not increase the overall build cost which remains at the original figure of approximately £695,000. As previously reported, the build is in essence the design approved by the Peak Park Planners and awarded the Big Lottery Fund grant.

The total money raised stands at £708,395, which means that all moneys required for the building costs have been secured by the funding group, and the additional funds can be used for a much improved specification kitchen, staging, new chairs and a keyboard. There are still some bids that we await the outcome of, which, if we are successful will allow us to fund storage trolleys, a moveable bar and outdoor furniture. The Committee has set up a facility to access a loan of £20,000 if necessary, from the Rural Community Buildings Loan Funds because some funding bodies who have pledged funds will not release their funds until some weeks after the costs have been paid (i.e. the loan would be drawn down to support cash flow ONLY and is not required for the overall build cost).

All pre-commencement planning conditions have been satisfied, and there are ongoing discussions with the Peak Park to ensure other planning conditions are agreed at the appropriate time. For example the Peak Park has been instrumental in advising and guiding the Committee on an appropriate landscaping plan, which has been evolving during the build process. Minor design decisions not included in the already approved outline specification, e.g. carpet and blind colours, are being considered after recommendations by the architect, in discussions with the Design Interface Team, who then bring recommendations to the full Committee for discussion and agreement.

There is an open meeting scheduled for 4th March (8 – 9pm venue TBA), to answer any questions arising from this newsletter. Please also note the AGM will be delayed until 27th May after the final completion of the Hall. In the meantime, as always, every member of your Committee is happy to answer any further questions on an individual basis or questions may be answered by reading the minutes in the shop folder.

Memorial Hall updates.

Following the next Memorial Hall committee meeting (which takes place on Wednesday Feb 10th), a newsletter will be issued, with the aim of bringing everyone up to date on the current state of the project. The newsletter will appear on PARWICH.ORG by Friday, and on village noticeboards by the end of next weekend.

This will be followed up by an open meeting on Thursday March 4th (venue to be announced), which everyone is invited to attend. This will be an opportunity for seeking further clarification of any questions which you might have, as a follow up to the information in the newsletter.

The AGM will now take place on Monday May 10th, after the build is complete.

As always, minutes of each committee meeting can be found in the village shop.

Emergency First Aid for Children

Last year Parwich First Responders organised training for all interested parties in how to care for children in life-threatening situations.  They are keen to organise more such training if there is sufficient interest:

Do you want another visit by ALAN GIBSON, CONSULTANT NEONATOLOGIST (children’s doctor in charge of new born baby unit) of Sheffield Hospitals?

It is now a year since Alan and his team came to the village to teach us about how to care for infants and children that we found in a life-threatening situation, e.g. unconsciousness, fits, drowning, electrocution, head injury.

We have recently been in touch with him and he would very much like to visit our village again. He is willing to come with his team, for as long as we wish, whenever we wish and to teach whatever we wish! So long as we can organize some dates for him.

So this note is just to let you know of his offer.

  • Now there are so many new children in the village, perhaps there could be some training for those who have not been to his training before?
  • Also perhaps some teaching for the partners of those who came last time?
  • Maybe there are some people who could not make our last date?
  • And of course there are those of us who may have attended last time but would like a refresher session?

As before he is happy to teach anyone – those with direct care of children, those who come across children in their working lives, and of course grandparents etc., who may take care of children.

Could you please contact us and let us know if you are interested, and which group you fit into. When we know what you want we will go back to Alan and try to arrange some suitable dates.

Take care.
