Sue H would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported the coffee morning last Friday and made donations. She would especially like to thank those who sent cakes, jam, eggs etc. for sale. The morning raised £225 which will be sent to Carol M who is raising sponsorship for WoW.
As well as being a successful fund-raising event, it was an excellent opportunity to see people and to catch up!

Lovers of great fiction, the waiting is over…
Following in the footsteps of serialised novel writers such as Charles Dickens and Stephen King, we present to you the second thrilling instalment of Parwich Heights – a romantic novel written by the readers of parwich.org. You can learn all about this masterpiece-in-the-making by clicking here along with details on how you too can become a co-author in this ambitious project.
The first instalment was published a short while ago and is republished here to remind you of what happened. The second instalment, written by the hugely talented ‘Bridget Jones‘, is hot off the press and is published here for the first time. We would like to thank ‘Bridget’ for a most compelling read. This is quite a story! Read on…

Copies of the School Newspaper, written by the children to raise funds for the School Council, will be available in School on Friday before and after the Assembly. Also it is hoped it will be on sale in the Shop at the Sycamore during the week.

Today we received a reminder of the dangers of traffic going too fast through our villages, most of our lanes have no pavements and limited or non-existent verges. This is particularly relates to where the road abruptly narrows between the gables of Dam Farm and Church Gates Cottage in the vicinity of the children’s Play Area, with a junction on one side, and an emerging footpath and suddenly ending pavement on the other, all on a bend:
I thought it would be a good idea to post a reminder about watching your speed in the village. Or rather, watching out for the speed of others! There was a coming together of a bus and van on the bend beside Dam Farm this morning (1 vehicle left a 40ft skid mark).
This follows the recent duck fatality at the same location! This is also the point where a public footpath meets the road, where little kiddies might venture out unexpectedly. A small child on a bike, for example, would not be visible from either direction until the last moment. Could you stop in time?
Ian P
As well as the damage to the two vehicles a garden wall was hit.

Christopher Harrison, the former vicar of our of Parishes is featured in today’s Nottingham Evening Post. Click on the image to see the full article as a pdf.
Sunday saw the première of the hymn “City built with skills of thousands“, composed by Christopher. It was sung for the first time by the Choir at the High Sheriff’s Legal Service in St Mary’s in Nottingham’s Lace Market.
The hymn can be listened to on the Evening Post’s website. Click here to go to their website, and then select the link “CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THE HYMN” about a third of the way down the article.
Congratulations and best wishes to our former Blog Team Member from all here at PARWICH.ORG.

Click on the image of the cover to see the current issue of the Group Magazine for the parishes of Alsop, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Thorpe and Tissington.
Paper copies can be obtained in each of the Churches or you can arrange to have it delivered to your house.
This issue starts with ‘Greetings from Andy Larkin‘ letting everyone know something about himself and his family, along with thanks to all who helped get the vicarage ready before they moved in and for all the gifts and cards welcoming them.
Please note in the Tissington section a new home is being sought for an 11 year old terrier named Bramble.

The Ashbourne News Telegraph is again available on the counter at the Sycamore or on-line; not even any thing from our own DW. I struggled to find many mentions of our area, but here are some items that might interest our readers.
- p1 Councils have agreed to relax parking restrictions for Shrovetide Football and this year’s balls have been revealed (see also p.2)
- p3 Photo of unexpectedly early lambs at Kirk Langley. Don’t forget we here at PARWICH.ORG would welcome pictures of the first lambs or calves in our local parishes.
- p.4 Parking prices will rise in April.
- p.13 The new Robin Hood film with Russell Crowe shot in Dovedale is due to go on general release in May.
- p.38 Dominoes League: Division C the Sycamore stands in 5th place.
- p.40 Thank you to the justifiably proud parent for pointing out the article on the back page, along with photo. Congratulations to Bertie L for being part of the Terra Nova team that won two events at the IAPS North West Cross Country Championships.
As always let us know of anything we have missed.

Latest update from your Safer Neighbourhood Officer
December 2009/January 2010
.
.
Dear Resident
Happy New Year from your Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team!
During the month of December several incidents of flooding (due to a blocked drain) on Spend Lane were reported by drivers, residents and the local Water Bailiff. The issue was also raised at the Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team Governance Meeting held on 9 December 2009 at Fenny Bentley School. Also mentioned was the missing ‘Warning’ sign from the A515 opposite Valley View, Fenny Bentley. All relevant agencies have been informed and hopefully the issues will soon be rectified.
The B5056 to Bakewell is still closed to traffic and this has caused many logistical issues. On 1st December a track machine being used by the workmen at the site of the landslide had its windscreen stolen. This is not common practice around this area, but it does happen!.
On 31st December at approximately 7pm at Mappleton a suspicious incident was reported. A resident was walking through the village, when a male pulled up in silver estate car and asked if they would like a lift to Ashbourne, offer refused and the vehicle drove away.
Dog fouling! ….this is happening at Fenny Bentley on a regular basis on the lane leading to Ashes Farm Barn. Please be considerate and think of the children, walkers and residents that enjoy the area.
If anyone has any information regarding these incidents please contact Ashbourne Police on 0345 123 33 33. Other useful numbers are at the bottom of this post.
On a lighter note, the Mappleton New Years Day Boat Race and Bridge Jump was a great success although it was very, very cold; apparently the water was the coldest for many years. No incidents were reported at the event.
At Fenny Bentley on 1st January a vehicle skidded off the road and damaged a fence, no injuries but a narrow escape for the driver. Two days later another vehicle skidded off the road into a garden, down a steep bank, again no serious injuries; this was at Kniveton during the day at around 1pm. Continue Reading »

Thanks to Cheryl and Helen for sharing the following information.
Roads are very icy this morning, so care is needed. The Alsop road is quite bad all the way along where it has rained and then frozen, and there are patches of ice on the A515 to Ashbourne, particularly on the hill going down from Tissington gates to Fenny Bentley.
– Cheryl
I can second that. Going south to Ashbourne at 7:30 seemed OK, but going north at 8am there was significant black ice at the footbridge. Further north to Buxton is better, as it is actually milder here for a change!
– Helen
Latest this afternoon – Thanks Graham. Please be warned that if this rain freezes on the snow, the roads may well cause problems. Please update us.
Major bad journey home tonight (Wednesday). Left Buxton at 5:10pm (I know – part timer). Got stuck at Brierlow Bar on the A515, decided to cut across to A6 via Chelmorton. Driving conditions appalling. Home 1hr:45 mins later just a little bit stressed. Had to break NY resolution and reward myself with a pint of Oddfellow Ale.
I think the A6 and A515 are presently closed.

Updated 2nd Feb: Since posting the information below, Karen Carpenter has offered to ring round different Oil Suppliers to get an overview of how various companies would work with local syndicates. Rather than having only one company attending the meeting, Peak Oil will be asked for their ideas, but not invited to the meeting.
A Peak Oil representative has asked Karen Carpenter (Derbyshire Dales District Council) if he could attend the open meeting at the Sycamore Inn on Thursday 11th Feb. She contacted me as the only member of the Blog Team whose phone number she had. We both felt that he may have useful information to share, but obviously it is essential that any co-op is not tied to any specific company. Consequently he will be offered a slot near the start of the meeting but will be asked to leave for the main discussion.
However, if anyone else has strong views on a company rep. attending the meeting please leave a comment, contact Karen Carpenter or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

Has anyone lost a smokey grey cat (young male)? The cat looks well cared for, and has obviously not been out in the wild for any length of time.
I noticed a cat miaowing outside our door last night, and it didn’t want to go away. I let it in, in case it had been abandoned. It stayed overnight, even though we have a cat flap where it could have gone out. I put the cat out this morning when I went to work, and have come back this evening and it’s still here.
Does anyone own, or know who owns this cat – please contact the website (parwich@hotmail.co.uk ) to be re-united with your cat.
Thanks for your help.
Regards
Keeley

Welcome again to the Rev Andy Larkin and his family. Although they have now been living in Parwich for several weeks, yesterday saw Andy officially take charge of the five parishes of Fenny Bentley, Thorpe, Tissington, Parwich and Alsop en le Dale.
In St Peter’s, which was filled to capacity with members of the five congregations, representatives of the diocesan clergy and friends and visitors, Robert Shields Esq (on behalf of his father) and Sir Richard FitzHerbert, joint patrons of the parishes, presented our new vicar to the Right Rev Humphrey Southern, Bishop of Repton. The three photos below show the attenuation tank being installed. This tank collects the water from the roof and car park and controls the rate at which water enters the main drain. The tank is under the entrance to the car park, between the four ground source heat pipes. All the rest of the drains for the hall are now in place.

p 3 Parking bosses ready to step up enforcement campaign. From Monday DCC will start being tougher on vehicles, particularly to those parked alongside dropped curbs.
p.7. Newspaper undergoes a radical new redesign.
p16. Flagg races planned for April. The first race was held on Easter Tuesday 1892 and it has run every year except during World War Two and Foot and Mouth. There are seven races scheduled for this year including the famous stone wall steeplechase. This race will now start in open country between the villages of Pomery and Flagg and navigation could be as important a factor as raw speed, agility and courage. Tuesday 6th April at 12.30pm.
P20/21 – Dreams of reviving the carnival glory. Plans are gathering momentum to revive the Ashbourne Carnival.

After the flooding events of 2008 in parwich, its quite evident that some bright spark sat in an office somewhere has designated Parwich as a High Risk flood area, even though the events of 2008 were as a result of a cloud burst. I would be most interested to hear from anyone experiencing difficulty in getting insurance against flood risk.
Click here to access the Environment Agency Flood map of our area and double click on the map to get further information.

If you or anyone you know are planning to bring in bags of old clothes for bags 2 school, the collection day has been changed from Tuesday to Thursday so bring in the bags either on Wednesday or before 9am on Thursday.
Thank you.
Posted in School | 3 Comments »
Do you have any old clothes, curtains, bedding (though not pillows or duvets), soft toys, shoes, coats or blankets? How about having a good old clear out, putting them into bin bags and taking them down to the school on Wednesday? The Bags 2 School scheme is a school fund raiser which allows the school to raise significant funds in return for your old clothes. So, please have a hunt around and see if you can put together a bag or two for us. It is valued on weight so heavy old curtains are particularly valuable if you have any!

This week has been a busy week, with Wildgoose working today to help make up for some of the days lost during the recent snow. The joiners have been preparing the roof for felting, hopefully this will happen next week. Internal block work has been rapidly continuing, and all the internal walls can now be seen. The ground heat source pump has been pressure tested ready for future connection.

This photo is taken from the back on The Legion and the block work on the left will be the kitchen. The area between the kitchen and the main hall will be the meeting room. The ground in front will be the patio area with raised planted beds and will be a secure play area for Stepping Stones and the Toddler Group. Continue Reading »
