What is beneath our feet?

If you have been wondering what is down this hole, read on.  The close up shots of the culvert under the road outside Jack’s house, shows the debris brought down by large amounts of water.  Note the wood holding up the culvert!!  This is now being replaced by reinforced concrete slabs.

John and I thought some people might be interested to know about the Riverford Organic Box scheme which we have joined and are absolutely delighted with. We get a veggie box each week, and quite often add to it with fruit, yogurts, cheese etc. You can order meat too, but we haven’t tried that yet.
Everything is organic, very fresh and – so far- quite delicious. It is not all local – for example at the moment tomatoes, peppers etc are coming (never by air) from Spain or France. They claim to be cheaper than supermarkets (and the quality is certainly very much better) and deliver free to Parwich and surrounding area, on Fridays.
If anyone would like to find out a bit more before possibly committing themselves, do give us a ring on 519. I hasten to say we have absolutely no connection at all with Riverford, apart from as satisfied customers! We are just so pleased we thought we’d like to pass on the news.

Sitting in the drawing room of her retreat in the Austrian Alps, Clarissa Claridge placed her Montblanc pen down on the desk and leaned back. She exhaled slightly in satisfaction at the main achievement of the afternoon. Instalment Five of Parwich Heights was complete…..it was time to publish. Clarissa’s public had waited a long time for this moment…..

Clarissa’s meisterwerk is published here for you as a world exclusive. Click on the book cover to be transported to a world of wonder!

If you would like to try your hand at an instalment of Parwich Heights, drop a quick email to parwich@hotmail.co.uk. A friendly member of the blog team will allocate you an instalment and check with you that you are not too busy when your turn comes up. It’s a great way to develop your creative writing skills and you can use a pseudonym if you don’t want to be mobbed by an adoring public. This story must be told – give it a go! 🙂

Week 23 Photo diary

The weather continues to be very kind and if you haven’t been to the site recently you will see how well the stonework is going; in some areas it is now at roof height.

This week the low level woodwork over the foyer has been done, whilst much of the main roof is being insulated.  The plumbers have just started on the first fix so things are progressing.  Depending on the weather work may be continuing on Saturday.

A number of villagers have already had a look around the new building.  If you are interested in having a look, either on behalf of your user group, or to get ideas for future activities and projects, or would just like to be ‘nosy’ then ring Ben (665).  Ben is the committee’s day to day link with the onsite team  and can be seen numerous times a day on his bike pedalling to the building site.  Any visits have to be worked around the building site activities and in accordance with Heath & Safety regulations, so lunchtime, 12.30pm is the most ideal time; it will only take about 15 minutes of your time.

Thank you to Martin for the filming and Ben for the narration and to JF-S for the photo.

Mother’s Day coming soon

Don’t forget that it is Mother’s Day a week on Sunday (14th March 2010).  A selection of Mother’s Day flowers/bouquets will be available at the Shop in the Sycamore from Friday 12th March from 6pm;the flowers are selected and arranged by Delia Pegg. Speak to Janet in the Shop if you want to make advance reservations.

Have you got any spare snowdrops?

These photos taken by Mike G show the snowdrops at their best, and this week it really does feel like Spring is here.  If you have any spare snowdrops in your garden, maybe this year one of your clumps needs dividing, please could you let Jane (665) or Glynis (561) know.  We are looking to pot up some snowdrops ready for underplanting near the entrance to the new Memorial Hall.  The best time to split your snowdrops is just after flowering, but whilst the leaves are still green.  Remember snowdrops spread very easily, so if you could spare some we would be very grateful and then everyone will be able to admire your generosity next Spring.

Memorial Hall update meeting

This week’s News Telegraph

The Ashbourne News Telegraph (3rd March 2010) is available in the Shop at the Sycamore or on-line.  The only mention of our area I could find was the Darts and Dominoes Leagues on p. 47, however do add a comment with anything I have missed.  Other items that might be of interest include:

  • p.1 & p.2 Council Tax payments are set to go up by 2.9%, less than inflation and the lowest raise for 15 years.  The District Council are discussing this tomorrow and it is likely we will see increased fees (e.g. parking charges) and service cuts.  Approximately 12% of our Council Tax goes to Derbyshire Dales District Council, with the majority, 70%, going to Derbyshire County Council.  The County Council faces £60 million cuts in services over the next five years.
  • p.6 The Hartington Cheese and Wine Company held a cheese tasting event at the the weekend in the Old Cheese Shop, it is good to see the Shop continues even though the Hartington Factory closed.
  • p. 24 & 25 Two page photo spread of the 4th Battalion of the Mercian  Regiment training in the snow at Upper Hulme.  See the article for details of the Mercian Regiment’s visit to Ashbourne on Thursday 18th March.  The paper’s website also has a video clip of the training event.
  • p. 29 Sheena Bryden is helping celebrate Women’s World Day of Prayer on Friday at 2pm in the Reading Room at Snelston and 7-30pm at All Saint’s Church, Belle Vue Road, Ashbourne.  Sheena will well known to many in Parwich and Alsop from her support of local church services, especially while we were with out a Vicar.

The next meeting of Parwich Parish Council is Tuesday 2nd March at 7-30pm in the Cricket Pavilion at Parson’s Croft (so wrap up well). As always the first ten minutes of the meeting are open to comments and questions from members of the public, who may also attend but not participate in the remainder of the meeting.

Insurance Problems?

Relatively recently we had a post on the insurance problems following the ‘flooding’ in 2008 and on the Environment Agency website classification of village homes at risk of flooding.  A village resident discussed the matter with a Nottingham based insurance broker who felt that there may be benefits in exploring a collective solution.  The broker suggested holding a local surgery and if there was interest trying to get cheaper insurance by taking a number of households together to potential insurers:

We have been speaking to Parwich resident recently about his household insurance, and he has been telling us all about Parwich. We feel that we have just the right set up to be able to deal with the insurance needs of home owners in Parwich.

We have done some research and have a good understanding of the geography of Parwich and the surrounding areas. We have already spoken to several insurers who are keen to work with us to provide insurance cover for the village.

Our approach is different to other household insurance providers in that the cover is bespoke to your requirements and we provide a very personal service at a competitive price.

When we review the home insurances of lots of our clients we very often find their cover to be inadequate. Most people are either under insured, or are insured through policies that exclude risks that are key to their home, their precious belongings and their families so its always worth a review.

We are happy to visit clients in a surgery type arrangement or individually so please contact myself (contact details below) or Bryan Elliott on 07824 566556 or via e-mail at belliott@wilorg.com . We look forward to hearing from you.

New Member Of The A52s Plays Gig!

The A52s would like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who turned up for the gig in the Legion last night and especially to Social Sec Carl. It was an evening of great fun.

The band’s sound was enhanced greatly by the addition of ace guitarist Wyatt, who joined the group for a few numbers!

Well done Wyatt – you played very well!

          Latest Update from your
          Safer Neighbourhood Officer
          February 2010

.

.Dear Resident

February has been cold and snowy, but I feel spring is on its way….the daffodils and snowdrops are fighting their way through.

In Ashbourne town centre the annual Royal Shrovetide Football took place; all went well, with not too many injuries or issues of anti-social behaviour. The crowds were good humoured and the Police and Shrovetide Committee all worked well together to deliver a fun two days in the town.

Back to more mundane issues now….mud on the highways and lanes of our villages! There have been several ‘calls for service’ from members of the public regarding farm vehicles leaving mud, silage and slurry during ‘muck spreading’ time, this is a rural community and to expect clear, spotless roads is not feasible, but if the drivers of the tractors could just make sure that they do not leave too much mess, I believe this would satisfy members of the public. The most calls we have received have been around the Fenny Bentley A515 stretch.

A dead badger was found on the road between Gag Lane and Rakes Lane on the 19/2, this was discovered by Police whilst on duty. If anyone does find a dead badger on the road (they can be rather large) please could you inform DDCC or Call DERBYSHIRE they are a hazard for traffic especially when it is dark. Continue Reading »

Photodiary Week 22

It has been a busy week on site, and fortunately the weather has warmed up as the week has gone on.  This has helped speed up the stonework and we now have two teams doing this work.

The roof timbers on the kitchen, foyer, meeting room and toilets are finished and await the final steel roof.

The first photo, below, is looking from inside the hall, towards the internal doors that open onto the foyer. The second from the foyer into the bar store cupboard on the left, the toilets and the cleaning cupboard on the left.  The disabled toilet is not shown from this angle. Continue Reading »

“One, two, three, four…….”

The A52s have been practising hard, trying to work out the difference between their augmented, suspended and diminished chords.

They think they’ve cracked it and are looking forward to playing for you at The Legion this evening, starting around 8.30pm. Admission free!

The band will be in full 5-piece configuration and will be featuring Bongo Rob on drums at this gig. He used to play in a Metallica covers band, but will try and tone it down a bit for this gig!

Click here for more information on the band.

Tissington Ford

Thank you to Andy for this warning sent at lunch time today:

Just to let you know that the Tissington ford is now above the “1” level on the depth indicator. Folk in Tissington consider that to the limit for getting a two wheel drive car through safely.

Regards,
Andy.

Though with the drier afternoon it should be going down.

A scam to be aware of.

An Ashbourne resident was recently subjected to a simple yet effective scam whilst out shopping at Tescos in Uttoxeter. Payment was made for items at the cigarette kiosk and two different cards were used. The resident then went to the car park, placed her handbag on the passenger seat and the other items purchased in the boot. The car was then locked and the trolley returned to the nearby trolley park.

On returning to the car and unlocking it, a female of eastern European appearance suddenly appeared by her side and asked for directions, waving a road map about. These were given before getting in the car and driving off. Fortunately, the resident went immediately to the petrol station and on paying for her fuel noticed that the two cards she had used in Tescos were missing from her purse. The cards were cancelled but whilst doing so, the offenders were taking several hundred pounds from the accounts using the cash machines on site.

It is believed that the female asking for directions was a distraction whilst an accomplice entered the car from the passenger side and removed the cards from her purse. Everything else was left, giving the offenders more time to use the cash machines before the theft was discovered. They must have been stood nearby when the cards were used and noted the PIN numbers as they were put in.

Please be extra vigilant.

Thank you.  PC 1288 Bointon, Ashbourne Police Station
