Does anyone have a home for Dodo?

Duoduo (pronounced “Dodo”) is an eight month
old pedigree Yellow Labrador, who currently lives
in Nottingham.

Sadly, her current owner is unable to keep her.
She is therefore in need of a good, loving
home and would no doubt enjoy the fields
around Parwich.

She is fully house trained, but could do with
additional puppy training.

Her current owner wants to ensure that
she goes to the right home and does not
want any money for her, provided she is
well looked after.

As an added bonus, Dodo’s owner is also
happy to pass on her sizeable cage, also
free of charge.

If you feel that she would fit into your family,
please contact Kevin S. via the blog team
(parwich@hotmail.co.uk) and we will put you
in direct contact with her current owner.

Update: As a result of this blog post, we have already been approached by a local family, who are interested in offering Dodo a new home. We’ll keep you posted.

So, haven’t we seen enough of it lately? Why do we want to start collecting the damned stuff? It’s everywhere, after all!

There is nothing new about rainwater harvesting; it was even done in pre-Roman times. However, in the UK we are far behind mainland Europe for collecting rainwater. Around 400 new rainwater harvesting systems installed per year in Great Britain – compared to over 50,000 each year in Germany.

In the UK, we are complacent about our water. It’s cheaper than in many other countries, and only 22% of domestic properties are metered. Despite our wet weather, the UK is still classified as having insufficient water. (Believe it or not, Madrid and Istanbul have more water available per person than London.) The demand for water has been constantly rising, whilst availability is dropping. An October 2008 report by the Environment Agency warned that Britain’s rivers, which provide 70% of our water, will drop by 10-15% in volume within 40 years.

Water conservation therefore needs serious consideration. It has been suggested that households need to reduce water consumption by a third, and rainwater harvesting could play a significant role in achieving this target.

Of the 150 litres of water that each person uses daily, between 30% and 50% does not necessarily have to be of drinking quality. On average, 50 of the 150 litres are merely used to flush the loo.

In the UK, mains water is cleaned to drinking water standards – but as we’ve just seen, we don’t drink most of it. Energy is used to clean water to a much higher standard than we need for washing, garden watering and toilet flushing. Collecting and using rainwater for some of these functions can save both energy and money.

Rainwater harvesting systems, like the one currently being installed in the new Memorial Hall, collect rainwater from the roof and store it in large tanks. This water can then be used for non-drinking applications, such as flushing the loos.

It’s also worth pointing out that the government now offers 100% tax relief to business owners under the enhanced capital allowance scheme, whenever rainwater harvesting systems are installed.

A blog reader has told us that the BBC have reported this weekend (see article) that villagers in Somerset have converted their traditional red phone box into one of the country’s smallest lending libraries. Users deposit a book they have read and swap it for one they have not.   Should we try the same in Parwich?

We would like to see as many people as possible coming to support our Christmas bonanza on Friday 11 December – all welcome.  It starts at 1.30pm and finishes at 3.30pm. There will be lots of stalls including Lucky Dip, Raffle, Refreshments, Puppet Show, Cake Stalls and Name the Teddy’s Birthday.

The Wonders of the Blog!!

Is this “match” a first for the Parwich blog?

Thanks to the blog Millie the Guinea pig has moved to Birchover to start a new life with Ruby the Guinea pig, also recently bereaved. They found our posting on the blog by googling “Derbyshire guinuea pig” – the wonders of modern technology!

We are left with a hutch and a run if anyone wants them. The run is particularly solid having been passed to us by the Websters about 6 years ago, who were not its original owners! We don’t want any money for them.

Increase in scams – Police Advice

Derbyshire police have received a number of reports from residents relating to security companies contacting them by phone offering home security surveys, alarm systems and crime prevention advice, stating that they will be in your area shortly. If they mention that they are working for Derbyshire police, they are not.

Some companies use high pressure selling techniques once they visit your home. If you require any security advice, please speak to one of the Crime Reduction Officers at Buxton police station by calling 0345 123 33 33.  Continue Reading »

Photo Diary Week 9

This week the floor slab has starting being laid and should be finished by next Friday.  The rainwater harvest tank has been positioned and when fully installed will take most of the rainwater from the roof and it will be used to flush the toilets.  The photo shows the tank being lowered into its new home – and this is the only time it will be seen.  Work will be continuing tomorrow until early afternoon.

Home wanted for X Box and games

Does anyone want our X Box?  It is the old version not the 360, but still works fine.

I don’t think they make new games for it anymore, but we have quite a few games you could have with it, controllers etc.   We don’t want any money for it, just don’t want to throw it away.

If no-one wants it, does anyone have any ideas what we could do with it?  I don’t think charity shops take electrical items.  I did try to join freecycle once but it was rather complicated and put me off.

Update from your Safer Neighbourhood Officer
November/December 2009

During the month of November there have been several incidents to report. On the 5th the Derby Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to Dovedale near to Lion Rock where a 16 year old female had fallen and sustained back injuries. The Air Ambulance was also in attendance. All was well and the injured party was taken to hospital.

It was reported on the 13th by a resident at Tissington that a white van was seen taking a ‘flash’ photograph of their farm and on the 14th another vehicle, this time a yellow van was reported visiting a farm at Fenny Bentley asking if they had any car batteries they could have. It is very important that all suspicious vehicles, enquiries are reported to the Police, we can then check them out and update the residents with the outcome.

On the 16th a vehicle (Corsa) was reported burnt out at Alsop Station, Alsop en le Dale. Police attended and found the car was completely destroyed. Enquiries are still ongoing and hopefully a result will be forthcoming and will be reported in next month’s newsletter. Continue Reading »

Further power cut today?

A Parwich resident was told yesterday that a further power cut was likely this afternoon because there is still further work required to clear the tree(s) from our power lines.

However Central Networks (tel. 0800 056 8090) have no planned cuts on their computer system (10am Sunday morning) for our area, so are unable to confirm this.  If we hear more we will update this post.  If you hear more please add a comment or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk .

We have been lucky to miss the worst of the rain and the mild temperatures have continued.  However the wind may be implicated in the recent power cuts.

Simon’s retirement

As most now know Simon is retiring from the Postal Service.  He has been delivering our letters for the last 11 years, always with a friendly smile and often going well beyond the call of duty.

You can still leave your messages and a donation for his present at the Shop in the Sycamore or with Martin and Jean at Gibbons Bank.

The presentation will follow the Methodist’s Xmas Concert in St Peter’s at 2.30pm on Sunday 13th December, when there will be mince pies and refreshments.   Every one is welcome either for the concert and mince pies, or just for the mince pies afterwards.

Please could you let Martin or Jean (tel. 529 martin@orchidserve.com) know if you would like to attend so that they can make sure there are enough refreshments for you!

Last night’s power cut & more

Part of our area experienced a power cut from about 1am last night/early this morning (Friday/Saturday).  It lasted between three and four hours if my central heating timer is to be believed.

Some of you may have slept through it, so you may want to check any electrical timers.

Added at 5-45pm on Saturday 21st – I guess you would have had to have been on holiday to have missed the second power cut today.  It rather renders the above redundant!

Added at 9pm on Saturday – Eon (?Central Networks) report the power cuts were due to trees interfering with the power lines supplying Parwich and Tissington.  There is a possibility that there will be a further power cut tomorrow afternoon.  Hopefully we will be able to post confirmation of this tomorrow morning.
