Today’s stunner

12Aug09The Ashbourne News Telegraph is again in the shops and on-line.  Click on the image of the paper to access today’s issue.

So far I have failed to find this week any direct reference to Alsop-en-le-Dale, Ballidon, Parwich or Pikehall, not even mention of the Parwich Panoramic Five, perhaps it will be in next week’s.

  • p.1 Some 1,000 inmates have escaped or been misplaced from Sudbury Prison in the last 10 years. (Click here to read the article.)
  • p.1, 9, 10 & 11 Russell Crowe continues to ride round Dovedale and Thorpe in Lincoln Green.  As well as a three page spread, the paper’s website has a slide show.
  • p.2 Mobile speed cameras will be in the area this week (Mon 10th to Sun 16th August) as part of a campaign to cut speeding and encourage road safety, including the A515 Ashbourne to Buxton road.
  • p.6 Radio 4 Any Questions is to be in Queen Elizabeth Grammar School on Friday 18th September.  To get free tickets contact 01335 343685 ext.213.  Doors will be open between 6-45pm and 7-15pm.
  • p.7 Dovedale Sheep Trial on Tuesday 18th Aug from 1pm and Wednesday 19th from 7am at Blore Pastures, Ilam.
  • p.16 Craft fair at Tissington Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday.
  • p.23-27 Feature advertising Ashbourne on Saturday at the Polo Ground, Osmaston.
  • p.46 Biggin currently stand 9th in the Summer Football League, but they have several games in hand.

As always let us know any local references we have missed.

Have your say tomorrow

You can have a chance to give your view on policing tomorrow, Thursday 13th August -10am-4pm in the Horse and Jockey Yard, Ashbourne.

‘Have Your Say’ was introduced seven years ago as a way to find out what the public thinks about the police service in the county, this year will focus on neighbourhood policing and public confidence in the police service. Continue Reading »

The closure of the B5056 just north of the Bentley Brook Inn at Fenny Bentley is likely to continue into next year.

B5056 closure at Fenny Bentley

The Blog Team spoke to Derbyshire County Council Highways Department this morning.

The Consultants, who investigated the landslip when the road was closed in June, have indicated four possible options. The County Council are deciding which option to go ahead with, though the currently preferred one involves sinking piles into the hillside to stabilise the landslip. They hope that work will start in 3 or 4 months, but then the work is likely to take another 3 or 4 months. Their website has a projected end date in May 2010, though presumably this will be subject to updating once they have finalised the programme of work and assuming that there is no dramatic further landslip.  Continue Reading »

BBC Radio Derby in Parwich

Radio Derby reporter, Nick Wilmot, is visiting Parwich tomorrow lunch time in their rural radio car.  They are visiting various villages over the summer, with a feature on Hartington going out this afternoon on the Ed George Show.

Nick Wilmot will be interviewing various people in relation to local groups and organisations. The interviews will go out on Tuesday 18th between 2pm and 3pm on the Ed George Show.

Just driven back from Ashbourne and the B5056 has been closed again at Fenny Bentley.  As soon as we have any more details we will post them on the blog.

Added later on Tuesday: Highways contacted the Blog Team to say that the road has been closed today because of further movement in the land slip.  At present they do not know how long the road will be closed, though it is likely to be some months. They will keep us up to date with their plans and any progress.

This email was sent to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, and, although the Wirksworth Festival is outside our area, we thought someone might be interested in being involved:

Are you ready for your close-up? Would you like to have a starring role as part of an artwork at Wirksworth Festival 2009?

Video artist Phil Lambert is making a new piece of work for Wirksworth Festival 2009, which will be shown in the window of the Bookshop, and on display through this year’s Festival, 11-26 September… and he needs your help! He wants local people to take a starring role in the project by volunteering to appear in his new work. If you want to take part then you only need to give up half an hour of your time on either Saturday 15 or Sunday 16 August for filming at the Parish Room in Wirksworth. If you would like to take part then contact Phil direct by email at pwrlambert@hotmail.co.uk.

We have finally derived the profit figure for the PP5 run, and therefore the contribution from the event to the Memorial Hall fund.

A total of £ 313.00 profit was raised by the event.

The organisers of the Parwich Panoramic Five have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback received from runners of Tuesday evening’s race. The awful weather didn’t seem to dampen people’s enthusiasm on the night, and following much positive comment for the course and marshals afterwards, we have received some very kind emails, which are printed below. We are still trying to determine which “lovely lady” registered Jonathon!

Many thanks Parwich. A tremendous course, perfectly marshalled and signed. Really appreciate the effort that went into it. Regular fixture then?

James

A superb race, and extremely well organized. The route was full of interest, although the finish line kept moving, it seemed!

I hope you raised a good amount of money for the hall.

See you next year!

How to run a junior fell race

Last night there were three junior races (under 8s, under 10s and under 12s).  Despite the conditions, all the competitors worked really hard, and they kept running all the way round a very steep and slippery course (I know I fell over).

Here are some photos selected from all three children’s races to illustrate how a race should be run.  Continue Reading »

This week’s paper

stummer-5AugThe Ashbourne News Telegraph is again available, either in paper form at the Sycamore Shop or on-line.

Local interest stories include:

p1. Filming for the new Robin Hood film with Russell Crowe has been taking place at Thorpe Pasture

p.2 Our local bobby, PC Ian Cooper, has been holding regular sessions at Fenny Bentley School teaching a course in cycle safety

p.7 Our own Adam Swindell is pictured presenting a new bike and cheque to fundraiser John Flemming at Callow Top Holiday Park.

p.8 A photograph by John Fuller-Sessions is featured in this week’s paper with the caption “A stunning view of one of Ashbourne’s prettiest villages”.

p.18 & 19 A two page spread on last weekend’s Y-Not Festival

As always let us know about anything we have missed.

As previous posts and comments indicate last night’s Parwich Panoramic Five fell race went very well despite the weather.  The fastest time over the 5.3 mile mile muddy course was a very creditable 36 minutes 12 seconds.

Fell runners are a tough breed. Whilst most people would have taken one look at the drizzly weather and settled in for a night of reality TV, 63 intrepid individuals decided to take on the challenge of the very first Panoramic Five Fell Race. This race provided 5.3 miles of mud, stiles and inclines – most of which seemed to be going uphill!

Talking to a number of the competitors in the pub after the race, the event was favourably received. The organisation and marshalling of the event were particularly praised….so thanks Paul, Graham, Don and others who masterminded and organised the event. Thank you also to the marshalls and the Parwich First Responders for your time and trouble.

Rainfall comparisons:

  • June 2008 – 58mm
  • July 2008 – 59mm
  • June 2009 – 79mm
  • July 2009 – 174mm

July this year has been particularly wet, with more than three times the rainfall than the same month last year.  Unfortunately the jet stream looks set to flow over the UK all next week – so not much chance of a heatwave!

The Memorial Hall Committee is happy to announce that another £10,000 has been won for the New Build. This comes from the Garfield Weston Foundation and the village is very grateful for their support. Congratulations to the fund raising team.

The Committee is currently working to reduce costs even further by making the hall more sustainable which will allow them to apply for further grants in this area.

MISSING DOG – PLEASE HELP!!!!

Our very very loved, but very very naughty Golden Retreiver, BART has been missing for approx 16 hours. Although Bart is renowned for “razzling” and running off, it is usually only for about 1 hour max.

BART

We are very worried about him, if anyone should see him, please please let us know! If you don’t know Bart, he is a very dark, almost ginger Golden Retriever, very skinny. He is wearing a blue collar with Tag. (Known by some as the Ginger Fox!) Please, please can everyone keep a look out for Bart, we are all desperately worried about him and want him home.

Please contact us on 01335 390 677 or 0770 290 9484  nicki@theclosefarm.co.uk

THANK YOU!!!!!

This info from Nicki was sent in as a comment, but we have put it in as a post, in the hopes that someone will be able to find Bart.  If we can add a photo we will.

Interest in allotments

There has been a little interest in our last two posts on the idea of allotments

Parwich & District Horticultural Society discussed the idea at their last committee meeting and offered to co-ordinate any interest and possible garden sites. The easiest option would be to try to bring together those wanting space to grew vegetables with those who had land.  This might be part of a garden that is larger than needed or a re-introduction of the idea of a ‘pingle’ (a corner of a field used to grow vegetables).  Though requiring more long term planning, if there was sufficient demand the best option would be to seek a larger plot for more formal allotments.

If you are interested in having access to land for growing vegetables in Parwich or have land suitable for this, contact parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will pass the information on to the Horticultural Society.

Looking for a house to rent

This post has been emailed into parwich@hotmail.co.uk

Hello. My name is Diane Brown. At the moment I live in Atlow where I have lived for 12 years. I am looking for a house to rent for now, with a possibility of buying in the longer term: preferably somewhere with 4 bedrooms. I’m sure you’ll all agree that Parwich is a beautiful village, so of course I am interested in finding somewhere there.

I run my own business Potions Club which some of the children in your village have been to, so I’m already a bit known in Parwich. I have been keeping an eye out on your website and will continue to do so. Thank you very much.

Diane Brown (please email via Potions Club on info@potionsclub.com)
