Stepping Stones, Pre-School

The Stepping Stones Pre-school have been doing lots of lovely things and they would like to share some photos with us.

After a walk around Parwich when the children were looking for signs of Spring, they then made these pictures of trees.

The children went on a visit to Ashbourne Library for a special ‘Storytime’ after which the children enjoyed choosing books to take home. The squash and biscuits were popular too!  There is now a display of their work in the children’s section of the library.  Why not pop in and have a look.

The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”

But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost.

Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Intrigued by Jamal’s story, the jaded Police Inspector begins to wonder what a young man with no apparent desire for riches is really doing on this game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out…

Tissington Well Dressings – Day 3

Hydrangea smallToday is the day when each Well has to be finished ready for the 6pm setting up.  From lunchtime on Day 2 and throughout Day 3 this is probably the most satisfying and varied part of the dressing, as we are now placing different coloured petals to create the side pieces, which will complement the central picture.  Some petals, like the hydrangeas are easier (I didn’t say easy) to work with, because the petal is thicker. Kingcup small (Most pictures will enlarge if you click on them.)

Working with the kingcups or marsh marigolds are much harder, the petals are thin, tear easily and you have to be extremely careful when pressing them into the clay, so as not to get any clay on the petals or bruise them. Continue Reading »

Is your family safe from fire?

There were surprisingly few at the Fire Safety meeting last night, but we all learnt important messages.

  • Did you know that the Fire Service will supply and fit smoke alarms free of charge, and that modern alarms are sealed units that last for 10 years (no batteries to change)?
  • Or if you are over 60, our own Brian, part of Derbyshire’s HandyMan Network, will supply and fit alarms free of charge – phone 0845 850 8013
  • Keep room doors closed at night to keep safe
  • Don’t use a chip fryer, a big source of fires.
  • Hair straighteners, curling tongs and hairdryers can be a problem, as they become hot, and then are left on a surface which could ignite.
  • Best not to leave the TV on standby at night, turn it off.
  • Overloading electrical sockets with adaptors and multiways can be a problem.
  • Best not to run the washing machine at night or when you are out- a fault could cause a fire.

Many thanks to the Ashbourne crew who came to talk to us- they can be contacted below, and thanks to the Parish Council, who sponsored this meeting.

Thank you to Martin for sending in this post.   Click on poster to enlarge.

Yew Tree Well, the Well Dressing that I help out on is a real family affair.  The centre of operations is in a barn behind a couple of large farmhouses where 4 generations of the Carr family live, in fact they have been in Tissington for exactly 99 years.  Christopher Carr helped out on this well as a child and saw the Well Dressings restarted in 1950 after the war.  In 1966 Barbara his wife got involved and then their children as soon as they were big enough to perch on a stool and add the petals.  Their son Edward soon had his new wife, Margaret, involved (it probably formed part of the marriage ceremony – “…in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, well dressings each year, till death us do part…”. After only two years Margaret then took over the designing of this well and has done so for the past 19 years. Continue Reading »

Flooding in Parwich – Survey

Parwich Parish Council are gathering information on last September’s flooding in the village.  This is at the request of Derbyshire Dales District Council to determine if further preventative action can be taken.

If you were effected please complete the questionnaire put through your letter box by 30th May.  If you don’t have a questionnaire but want to be involved please contact Karen Wigley (Clerk to the Council) on tel. 253, email ppccl@fsmail.net

The more forms returned, the more likely action will be taken.

Honey Bee Swarms

This is the time of year, mid May when honey bees are prone to swarm, when they leave their colony in search of a new abode taking with them the vital Queen bee. Last week a swarm of bees alighted in the cherry tree outside the telephone exchange next to The Old Post Office. Fortunately I was able to collect this swarm and take it to my apiary where it is now housed in a new hive.

honeybeeIf anyone in Parwich or the surrounding area becomes aware of a swarm of bees, do contact me on 390433 as soon as possible and I will be delighted to attempt to recover them and find a home for them. With the decline in the bee population due to colony collapse (no one knows the reasons for this, but some say it is due to herbicides) any attempt to promote the bee population should be welcomed as bees are a vital means of pollinating crops. I will be glad to play my small part in this. Mike Radcliffe, Flaxdale House, Parwich.

Well (sorry for the pun), but it is that time of the year again, the Tissington Well Dressings. The date for the opening of the Dressings falls on Ascension Day, this year Thursday 21st May. However, since I got involved, only my third year, the real marker is when the weather deteriorates and it gets cold again. This afternoon you could actually see your breath as you spoke. So out come the thermal long johns, blue silk this year, two thermal vests, a sweatshirt, apron and walking boots (not a pretty picture – so I haven’t inflicted one you). The apron is vital, because it is guaranteed that within 2 minutes of walking into the barn, via a very muddy field, you brush against the boards and get covered in clay – you can’t help but get messy – it’s like being a child again and I love it.
Collage 1

The Tissington Well Dressings are the oldest in Derbyshire (and certainly the best – not that I am biased). Some like Wirksworth were started in 1827 and several far more recently in the 1990’s like Hathersage & Whitwell. The exact date of Tissington’s is unclear, possibly dating back as early as the 14th century, when Tissington escaped the ravages of the Black Death or after the drought of 1615.

What we do know, is that there was written evidence in 1748 by Nicholas Hardinge, the Clerk of the House of Commons, (and of course if the information comes from the House of Commons it must be honest, reputable and true – sorry couldn’t resist the dig). Continue Reading »

Pub of the Year 2009

Janet is entering the Sycamore Inn Parwich for the 2009 Great British Pub Awards again, spurred on by last year’s success.

Entries are to be in by Friday, but if you want to add your input either give it Janet or add a comment below.

pianoA big thank you to Parwich and especially to Martin C for the offer of the piano from the vicarage.

But now we need three more favours: (i) to borrow a trolley which we could wheel it on; (ii) the use of a van or truck which it could be moved in; and (iii) some big strong men (or women of course) who could help to move it. If you can help us with any or all of these, please call the school on 245. Thank you very much!

Welcome to Parwich

Welcome to Vinnie and Amy who are moving into Rathbone Croft.  We all hope you feel at home in Parwich.

Following on from Roads, here is your chance to raise issues relating to the Peak District National Park Authority for the candidates for the County Council and European Parliament elections.  Look out for more posts on other topics.

Moonwalk completed

From Sandra and Rebecca:

We would like to thank everyone for their support for the Moonwalk which we completed this morning.

Before the start
Before the start

We set off from Hyde Park at midnight and strode out for the first 13 miles which took us past Buckingham Palace, Westminster along the Victoria Embankment and over London Bridge; coming back along the South Bank, Albert Embankment and Battersea Park; where there was a quick detour via the bushes!

B5056 temporary closure

We have heard, via the Parish Council, that the section of the B5056 next to the Bentley Brook – where the road is slipping away – is to be closed for two weeks from 16 to 30 June.  This is to allow the problem to  be investigated rather than fixed.  Who knows what will happen after that?

Following yesterday’s rundown of the six road signs that most of you wanted to stay, here are the seventeen signs that most of you would like to get rid off.

One of the more interesting results is that 73% of you support a lowering of the speed limit to 20mph.

We’ll start with the least popular sign of all, and work our way down.

90% of you thought that the lower sign (right hand junction) should go.

Walk to School Week

walkingThis week is Walk to the School Week.

Parwich Primary School are encouraging staff and children to leave their cars at home and where possible walk to school.

An additional idea is that parents who have to drive, leave their cars on The Green (or even by the football pitch) and walk through the village.

The School will be collecting information and giving out stickers and certificates to those children that take part. Again, this is a national and local county initiative aimed at encouraging healthy living and lowering pollution levels.

Perhaps other PARWICH.ORG readers could also think about how they could walk more and use cars less this week.  Adults and children let us know how you get on and share any good ideas you have.

Fire Safety Event this week

With all due apologies for the long wait, we can now reveal the results of our marathon “Traffic Signs of Parwich” survey.

We asked your opinion on 23 signs. Of those 23, only 6 signs received an overall positive score. Here they are, in descending order of popularity.

We’ll be back tomorrow with your least popular road signs – all 17 of them!

It’s the time of year where many of us  start thinking about summer bedding plants, baskets and containers…

Leatherbritches Nursery, owned and run by our own Bill Whitfield (affectionately known to some as “Big Bill”), is definitely worth a visit.

There is a large selection of summer bedding plants to enable you to make your own fantastic displays and for those with less time there is a range of pre-planted baskets and containers that you can put straight out in the garden. Instant effects with none of the hassle!

As well as the summer bedding plants, there are herbaceous perennials / shrubs and alpines etc.

If you’re not a flower person, there is an excellent range of vegetable plants.

The nursery is opposite the Bentley Brook pub and is open 7 days a week from 9.30 to 5.30.

Bill offers free delivery to the village and a discount for locals / villagers.

You can contact the nursery on 07713 743295 or for out of hours enquiries contact Bill on 390571.

Parwich Odd Fellows has commissioned its own specifically brewed ale. There are just four cases remaining, so if you want to try it you need to be quick!

Each case contains 12 bottles and costs £26; alternatively you can buy individual bottles at £2.50 a bottle.

In addition, there are just ten of the ‘special presentation packs’ still available – each pack contains 3 bottles, one of which is 1 of the first 24 bottles produced and has a special label to prove it! The presentation packs cost £11.

To purchase this unusual product, which is unique to Parwich Odd Fellows, please contact Bill Whitfield on 390571.

If you miss out, don’t despair – there will be a new but different brew produced for Parwich Odd Fellows for Parwich Wakes week!

kitchenEnvironmental Heath bosses have awarded Mrs Greaves a 5 Star rating for maintaining one of the best kept kitchens in the Ashbourne area.  It is up there amongst successful commercial restaurant kitchens.

On behalf of the school and the community – Congratulations and well done!

Good Luck to Sandra & Rebecca

Moonwalk-2

All our best wishes to Sandra & Rebecca who are doing the Moonwalk tomorrow.  They set off at midnight, Saturday night, from Hyde Park walking 26 miles in decorated bras, (plus a few more clothes).  They are doing it for a fabulous cause, Breast Cancer, we all wish them well.
