Local heating oil companies

I am probably the only person to be ordering heating oil in this heatwave. After paying over the odds last time, I decided to shop around this time and thought I would leave a list of oil company numbers on the blog for anyone else who’d like to shop around now or when it gets cold again (tomorrow perhaps). Today, EMO and Stoddards were the cheapest and CPL and Halso the most expensive but I guess that changes each time you call.

Halso: 01335 345 440

Stoddards: 08005 426 455

The Annual Open Gardens and Children’s Show are a super village afternoon and it’s success is due to the hard work put in by the Horticultural Society and those who open their gardens.  Please come and support the afternoon.  Remember that  the funds raised then go towards supporting the Show in September and other projects in the village.

Tom is to be a teacher.

Congratulations to Tom Chambers for landing a part on the BBC1 series Waterloo Road as Max Tyler (super head) in series 5. It might not be Hollywood, but it is a high profile TV role.

Having finished Strictly Come Dancing On Tour, Tom has now started filming for the drama series set in a comprehensive school. He is coming in as the new headmaster after Waterloo Road merges with another local school. He should be appearing on our small screens in the Autumn.

The Memorial Hall Committee are thrilled to hear that £26,000 has been awarded from the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation towards the rebuild of our new hall.

According to the Foundation’s website, only one in ten applications for its Large Grants Programme are successful – which makes the funding group’s achievement all the more remarkable.

Anyone involved in applying for grants will appreciate just how much work is involved in these applications: not just the hours of research to find the grants, but also the many more hours spent filling in pages and pages of information for the application. Each funding organisation has to be very sure that the project is worthwhile and that their funds are going to be administered properly, so it is great to know that our new Memorial Hall fills their exacting criteria.

The Committee is hoping for more good news over the next few days, so watch this space.

Hopefully this sunny spell will last into the week!

Special Sunny Saturday

What a beautiful day!

It was one of those days when the weather was so perfect that everything felt special.  The barbeques came out, people enjoyed their gardens and the pub beer garden was put to good use.

Morning interest was provided by the first Cycling Plus Sportive event which chose to come through Parwich as part of their 100 mile route. Starting from the Donnington area over 500 cyclists took part in the event. Looking at the event website, many participants found the Peak District section the most enjoyable.

This is an incredibly important opportunity that Martin, Jean & The First Responders are providing for us all.  None of us ever knows when we might be faced with an adult, child or baby choking, a heart attack or a family member or friend who suddenly loses consciousness.

On Saturday 13th June, between 10am & 5pm make time to call into the Memorial Hall, even if it is just for a few minutes & you can be shown quickly & safely how you could save someone’s life – that life may belong to someone very close to you.   Just 5 Minutes to Save a Life – Make room in your diary for this date.       Click on post to enlarge.JUST_5_MINUTES_BHF_POSTER 111

Trip to Lincoln – 9th June

Places are still available on the Over 60’s trip to Lincoln on Tuesday 9th June.  Everyone is welcome and tickets for non-members are £10.  The bus leaves The Green at 8am and there will be plenty of time to explore Lincoln.

This fascinating city is a mix of Roman, Norman and Medieval.  With the modern shops at the bottom of the city, there is a delightful ‘walk’ up Steep Hill to the olde shops, full of characters & charm.   The top of the hill is dominated by the Norman Castle and the magnificent Cathedral.  The Cathedral is holding an exhibition linked to the recently released film “Young Victoria” in which Lincoln Cathedral was the location for the coronation scenes. It includes the replica Edward I Coronation Chair made for the film.   To reserve a place ring Alan on 279

Blog

The next Parwich Parish Council meeting is at 7-30pm Tuesday 2nd June.  Click here to access the agenda as a pdf.

Don’t forget that the public can ask to address the meeting at the start, and that you can attend the meeting as an observer.  They will be discussing, among other things, the Flooding survey, the new substation on the Memorial Hall site and the new planning application for the change of use of the former Spar Shop.

The Memorial Hall committee have just heard the fantastic news that they have secured a grant of £25,000 from the Local Authority schools/Parwich School towards the building of our new hall. The funding committee are very encouraged that grant sources are impressed with the plans for a new hall to serve the community and are hopeful we shall get an equally successful response from other Fund holders who are currently considering our applications.

There has also been a very generous anonymous donation of £2,000 towards Project Parwich and also £15 from Judith in North Carolina. Thank you both whoever you are and it’s lovely that someone so far away wants to help. Judith, if you are ever in England after next summer, come and visit us and have a cup of tea in our new hall.

(This is in addition to the £721,100 currently on the thermometer, as we need to wait for our technical adviser to return from holiday to update it.)

Village SOS

Village SOS is a major new initiative from the Big Lottery Fund and the BBC. They will be searching for six UK villages with a great enterprise idea to benefit their community. They are also looking for six enterprising individuals to act as Village Champions and help them achieve their ambitions. There will be a chance to show the nation, what villages can do with a community enterprise idea and what change it can achieve in rural areas.

To find out more, tune into the One Show on BBC One on 01, 02, 03 June at 7pm. If you miss the broadcasts, log on to www.bbc.co.uk/villagesos after 01 June.

Update from your local Officer         June 2009

Over the past month it has been fairly quiet. We’ve had just one incident involving thefts. Overnight on 9th May 2009, someone stole aerials from cars parked at The Dog and Partridge, Thorpe. We have, in recent months, had a couple of incidents involving prowlers within Thorpe village. Please ring us if you disturb someone or have any suspicions about persons around the village at night. We recently received a good call from a member of the public in Kniveton. They were reporting a suspicious person approaching premises in the village. Police attended and checked the person out. He turned out to be the owner of the property. We really don’t mind attending these calls. Genuine people don’t mind being checked, and most find it reassuring that people take the time to notice things and ring us. Continue Reading »

The Stunner

Aplogies that The Stunner post is a day late, but other events took over.  However, having just popped down to our shop and picked up the News Telegraph, I can report that Parwich (as far as I can see) doesn’t feature very prominantly in this week’s paper.  So this will be a very short post!!  Click here for your online copy.

p20 & p21Ashbourne’s new Mayor, Caroline Cooper, was born & brought up in Parwich before moving to Ashbourne 40 years ago.
p1 &2 – Our MP, Patrick McLoughlin, the Tory chief whip, faces the wrath of voters as he joins the ever growing list of MP’s with expenses claims – but he has ruled out paying any money back himself because ‘the rule book said it was okay’!

You can kiss goodbye to the trees!

We have received a post from Keith Parsons expressing his personal views about the Memorial Hall, which we have printed in full.  In the interests of balance we have included some relevant responses and they are at the bottom of the post. Continue Reading »

Recently someone had an email to parwich@hotmail.co.uk bounced with an error message, saying the email address was not valid. They contacted a member of the blog team directly, and we suggested they try sending it again. The second time it came through OK. This may have been an isolated incident, but do let us know if anyone else has had problems. You can do this either by adding a comment below or speaking to one of the team (Mike A, Jane B, Lynne G, Mike H, Emma S or Peter T).

When emailing the hotmail account, if you do not hear back from us within a few days, either on the blog or directly, please contact one of the team in person.

An asbestos survey has been done today in the Memorial Hall and where samples have been taken large patches of blue tape have been placed over the sample area. Please do not disturb the patches as they maybe required for cross referencing once samples have been analysed at the lab.

In the current (June 2009) edition of The English Garden magazine, you can find a six-page photo-feature on the garden at Creamery Cottage.

The feature (“Peak of perfection”) starts on page 42 of the magazine. At the end of the article, there’s a plug for Parwich Gardens Open Day on Sunday June 21st – so let’s hope that the magazine sends a few more horticultural enthusiasts in our direction!

Hoodlums in Parwich Garden

PEACOCKS

peacockSince Saturday my garden is being trashed and my poultry terrorised by the hoodlum antics of a pair of Peafowl. The worst part about it is that they seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves here and are showing no signs of moving on.

Will the owner please come to claim them as soon as possible.

The following issues raised here at PARWICH.ORG will be forwarded to all the local candidates for the upcoming County Council elections and to the four MEPs that are standing again.  We have not contacted all the European election candidates as there are some 80, but if there are any others you particularly want to respond let us know.  Hopefully those contacted will comment below in the lead up to the elections.
