Our seemingly never-ending series continues (well, there are a LOT of traffic signs in Parwich!) with a look at two more School signs. Motorists entering the village through Smithy Lane will see both of these signs as they approach The Square.

Chatsworth Hosts Cyberscouts Event

cyberscounts-11Next Event – Saturday 2nd May at Alsop-en-le-Dale – interested in joining ring Mandy on (778)

All sections of the 1st Derbyshire Dales Cyberscouts were made most welcome in the stunning grounds of Chatsworth Estate for their April meeting. The day was opened by Group Scout Leader, Tim Polkinghorne, with the now routine Investiture and Moving Up ceremonies followed by badge awards in recognition of new skills and/or knowledge gained by members. The event was filmed by the Scouting Association with a view of showing footage of the day’s activities across the country to other scouting groups. The intention is to raise awareness of how traditional scouting can be achieved and delivered in a different way to weekly meetings, as Cyberscouts meet only 9 times a year on a Saturday at various locations across Derbyshire. Church Fete

The Church Fete tomorrow will be a super fun event, with lots of activities, games, stalls and teas happening throughout the afternoon.  Of course one of the ‘highlights’ will be the infamous famous A52’s who have just flown in from a gig in Mexico and will be rounding off their tour, tomorrow, on The Green at Parwich.

Apart from a chance for us all to have a super day tomorrow, there is a serious theme behind the fete.  Our Church needs urgent repairs and over £20,000 is required to safely maintain this building.  It really doesn’t matter whether or not you are a churchgoer, none of us would like to see the closure of one of the centre pieces of our community – so come along and enjoy Sunday’s events.

If you have any bric-a-brac/second hand goods please either bring them to:
Today – To Ben’s, 1 Croft Avenue
Sunday from 1.30pm – The Green
Sunday morning – if dry – leave them on Sunday in tidy pile near the beech tree on The Green

Things already donated – quality rugs, books, bookcase, 3 Edwardian chairs (a restoration project), lampshades (including new M&S ones), ocassional lamps, tools etc.

All cakes and home-made produce can be taken today to Andrew & Rachel’s, Church Farm, Creamery Lane, brought to Church in the morning or to the Cake Stall in the afternoon.

If you decide to switch then you should contact your existing supplier, and/or the new supplier in writing to request that your existing contract is terminated. Let us know if you have pricing details from local suppliers and tell us whether they provide good (or bad) service. We can share the information on this site for comparison purposes.

The A52s played a triumphant warm-up gig at El Gringo Stadium in Mexico City last night. Their song is ready.

Time for the lads to head home now. Next stop….the Green!

Traffic signs of Parwich #15

Instead of examining every individual speed limit sign in the village, let’s take one example and ask a more general question. Do you agree that 30mph is the correct speed limit for Parwich, or would you prefer to see it lowered to 20mph?

Now let’s look at the same signs from the opposite side. Is this the right place to increase the speed limit to 60mph, or should the speed limit only be lifted once all the remaining buildings have been passed? Or perhaps you think that a lower limit should apply all the way to Alsop, thereby including the houses at Parwich Lees?

Finally, and for the completists among you, here are a couple of signs that we won’t be polling: Continue Reading »

Places still available on Mystery Trip

Come and join in the next Over 60’s Mystery Trip on Tuesday 12th May. They will meet onthe Green at 6pm.  If you are interested in joining in ring Alan on 279.

Sandra and Rebecca would like to thank everyone who very generously supported their coffee morning to raise money and sponsorship for taking part in the London Moonwalk. They collected a massive total of £440.30 in the morning in donations, sponsorship, cake stall and raffle.

All the proceeds are going to breast cancer projects supported by the Moonwalk. Together with sponsorship already collected they are getting dangerously close to reaching their target at which they promised to post a picture of them in their decorated bras in which they will walk a full marathon length circuit around the streets of London, starting at Midnight on May 16th.

Here is a picture of them taken just before they polished off all the left-over cakes and biscuits.

Park Life

During the Blog Team’s meeting with representatives of the Peak Park Authority in January, they were very supportive of what we have been trying to achieve here at PARWICH.ORG and keen to promote other communities to to follow suit.

Following this up, John Fern (Head of Communications for the PDNPA) is visiting Parwich this afternoon to meet again with members of our Team.  He is writing an article on PARWICH.ORG and taking photographs to appear in the next issue of the Authority’s magazine ‘Park Life’.

If you have any thoughts on how community blogging in the Peak Park can be developed leave a comment below.  Alternatively John Fern can be contacted on john.fern@peakdistrict.gov.uk and as always we can be contacted on parwich@hotmail.co.uk

Some developments are already in the pipeline.  Following a couple of meetings with our Team, Alstonefield have developed their own interactive site using Blogging software which is due to be launched on 1st May (see www.alstonefield.org).  Also after his January visit to Parwich Jim Dixon the Cheif Executive of the Peak District National Park Authority has set up his own Blog (see http://jimdixon.wordpress.com/).

SPRING PLANT FAIR at Culland Hall

Near Brailsford – just off the A52.

SUNDAY, 26 APRIL, 11 am to 4 pm

Unusual Plants for sale from many leading specialist nurseries and R.H.S. Exhibitors

The Gardens at Culland Hall are also open – Parkland setting with wide terraced lawns and areas designed as rooms, white garden, colour theme borders, 19th century walled kitchen garden, woodland walk, hot border and much more.

Refreshments available all day – Entrance £3.50; children FREE; FREE car park!

All profits to The Mid-Derbyshire Association for Mobile Physiotherapy

This is a lovely plant fair. Last year we had plants that were being “launched” at Chelsea! So good to get the jump on fellow gardeneners… There is a fine collection of rare plants and trees on the grounds and thanks to the lovely recent weather, the garden is coming along nicely, so there should be lots to see!

Also, they have a fine collection of rare breed chickens and lovely Lleyn and Jacob sheep.

It is worth noting that Mobile Physio covers the southern Dales, including our own Parwich. I’m sure you’ve seen Beverley’s van in the village over the years offering free physiotherapy to the housebound.

Thanks to Debbie for this information.

All lost in a supermarket…

The lads still haven’t found their way to Parwich Village Green.

This photo shows them popping into an Aldi in Barcelona to ask directions. A sultry individual with a curly lip showed them where to find the frozen peas and explained the secret of rock ‘n’ roll.

a52s-supermarket-copy_1067x800Time is running out for the fab three. They better get back before they forget how to play their songs!

Come along and support Sandra & Rebecca’s coffee morning tomorrow at Knob Hall.  They are both raising funds for Breast Cancer in preparation for their sponsored Moonwalk marathon in London in May.

Temporary part time work available

If there is anyone out there who likes playing on tractors? We need someone to chain harrow and roll our paddocks. The tractor is a small hobby tractor and easy to drive. Changing the implements on the back does need a bit of strength. It could be suitable for an older teenager (with parental permission) after school and weekends or anyone that has a few hours to spare over the next two weeks. Pay according to age.
Please contact Patti or Brian Beasley on 206.

It’s The Stunner!

In this week’s Stunner (available in the pub as well as on-line):

p.1 Mystery surrounds land slip highway: an article and photo echoing our previous posts and comments on the state of the B5056 at Fenny Bentley.  The slip was probably caused by the floods last summer but will be difficult and expensive to fix since the hillside is made of slippery shale.  Derbyshire County Council will shortly be investigating the cause and extent of the slip following which they will be looking at when to carry out the work.  They do not rule out closing the road whilst the work is being carried out.

Traffic signs of Parwich #13 and #14

Twelve signs into our series, it’s interesting to note that no traffic sign has yet won unanimous support, or universal condemnation. Perhaps there are some of you who have voted in support of every sign, and some others who have always voted against? But if that’s the case, then there are also plenty of others who are voting in different directions, depending on the sign in question.

So, how will the verdict fall on this pair of signs: located at the cut-through lane near the old Methodist chapel, and leading down to the back of the school?

Firstly, is this a useful place for another school sign? Perhaps this depends on the number of children who use the cut-through lane. Is it a popular route?

Secondly, is there a danger that stray traffic might turn up this narrow lane, only to get stuck further up? This is certainly a problem near the top of Creamery Lane, as earlier comments have suggested – so is this sign doing a good job of preventing a similar situation elsewhere in the village, or is it merely stating the obvious?

Oh good grief!

Thummin’ USA

Looks like the lads have headed to the ‘coast’ for some of that surfin’ inspiration. Carsington Water sure provides great entertainment!

a52s-surf-copy_1067x8001

Good news though, they’ve torn themselves away from the golden sands, the white tops and a cool surfer chick called Debbie.  They may be heading back our way. You never know though, their sense of direction is not their primary strength…..

Here’s another double sign, which we’re going to split in two. Firstly, is the upcoming Z-bend on the outbound Alsop road hazardous enough to warrant a sign?

And secondly, how much of a danger is posed by the upcoming lane on the right hand side? The lane in question is a quiet one, and it’s signed as “unsuitable for motors” – so why does it need its own dedicated warning? (Is it used as a cut-through by school students, for example?)

Traffic signs of Parwich #837

…..and they’re off!

Following months of practice, the A52s have mastered their new tune and are now ready to play it in public.  Offers to headline Glastonbury have been turned down in favour of the much prized afternoon slot at the Parwich Church Fete, Sunday 26th April.

The tour bus has broken down so the band have been using their initiative, taking whatever transport they can find and following all the useful road signs spread around the village. If they get lost, take pity on them – give them some food plus a beverage then point them towards the Village Green. Hopefully they’ll make it on time.

a52s_1195x800

Whilst the band may appear to be a trio, be prepared for a couple of special guests. Bet you can’t stand the suspense!

St George’s Day & The Church Fete

stgeorgeAs we have seen from earlier posts there will be a fun packed day on Sunday 26th April, starting with a Procession at 10.15am from The British Legion to the Church, led by the Oddfellows, Cyberscouts and Doveholes Brass Band, everyone else is then invited to join in.  Hopefully there will be lots of children dressed up as St George or The Dragon on their way to the Church Service at 11am.

During the afternoon the Winster Morris Men and the A52’s will be entertaining us with live dancing & live music whilst the Church Fete is being held on The Green (if wet in The Church).

There are lots of attractions including Face Painting, Local Handmade Candles, Jewellery, lots of games including Famous Faces, Hoop-la, Box & Beanbag, a Crown Derby Raffle and Tombola.

A fete wouldn’t be complete with a Home-produce stall, so all cakes, jams, chutneys etc would be gratefully received.  The Second Hand stall also needs plenty of bits, so you have a week to rake out those cupboards, lofts & garages for all those bits that you really don’t need, but others would love – Go rumaging!!

There will be an icecream van on The Green whilst Teas are available in The Church, whilst there you can enjoy seeing the Model Railway which has been especially set up for the ocassion.

What is needed – Home-made produce, Second Hand goods & Tombola Prizes

Traffic signs of Parwich #10

Our second school sign is placed on the incoming road from Alsop-en-le-Dale. It serves a dual function: warning drivers to keep a look-out for young pedestrians on the main road ahead, and also for any who might be emerging from the footpath that connects to The Square.

In the absence of pavements, the risk of contact between pedestrians and vehicles is bound to be increased. Or do you feel that the risk here is more theoretical than actual, and that the issue could be better resolved by dropping the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph?

Bargain Clothes for Sale tonight.

Tonight will see a fashion show with bargain clothes for sale from many well known high street companies. Come along to the Memorial Hall tonight at 7.30pm. Tickets at £3 are available on the door.

This morning we received an email from Peak District National Park and we are delighted that they are regular readers of Parwich.org.  It shows that our blog goes much further than our immediate community.  We know that Derbyshire Police and The Ashbourne Telegraph are also regular users of this site.

Dear Parwich.org,

I saw in your newspaper summary an item about Patrick McLoughlin wanting to know what the Peak District National Park Authority is doing about the high rate of motorbike accidents. You may find this link to chief executive Jim Dixon’s weekly blog useful. It’s the article called “A Darker Side to Visiting the Peak District.” Best Wishes….

Traffic signs of Parwich #9

As it’s generally accepted that destination/mileage signs are both useful and necessary, we don’t propose to cover them in this series – with one exception, as pictured above.

Could this particular sign be better positioned? Please let us know what you think.
