Just beyond the High Peak Trail railway bridge on the road to Pikehall, the following extraordinary sight greets you.

dsc_8627-phase-one-capture-4-adjusted_1195x800

The field is planted with forage maize. Warmth is important to this particular crop, so rows of biodegradeable plastic are installed to trap the energy of the sun. Each plastic strip covers two rows of maize and the crop bursts through the membrane. Growing forage maize has never before been attempted in this area due to the temperature, so the success of this ‘high altitude’ planting will be interesting to watch.

By the way, forage maize is not intended for human consumption so this crop will not find its way to our dinner plates!

Fire Safety event planned

A comment on our site has warned us that on 30 May at around 11am, the roads through the village will be closed for a short while whilst Bike Radar Live comes cycling through.  BikeRadar Live is is a mass-participation cycling event which will take place on the weekend of 30–31 May 2009 at Donington Park.  One of the events is a bike race through the Peak District passing through Parwich. A Bird’s Eye View

Last Sunday, a small team of ‘professional’ Parwich cameramen were asked to make a video record of the St. George’s Day Parade. The exercise was meticulously planned and good vantage points were identified the day before. One of these points happened to be the bell tower of St. Peter’s Church, providing a rather interesting panorama of the village. In addition to the filming, our roving reporter took a few still pictures to share with you.

It’s great to see that Alstonefield have just gone live with their own community website, at http://alstonefield.org.

Like the Parwich site, this has been built using the WordPress blogging software. There’s a rolling “News” section on the front page, and a “Forum” section in which any registered users can effectively write and publish their own blog posts. The site also features a photo gallery, a “what’s on” calendar and a section dedicated to tourist information.

As members of the Parwich blog team took part in some of Alstonefield’s early planning sessions for the site, we’ve been looking forward to seeing the finished results, and we’re particularly excited to see another Peak Park village attempting a similar project to our own.

Congratulations on your launch, Alstonefield!

The next Parwich Parish Council meeting is at 7-30pm on Tuesday 12th May Please note that this is an alteration to the date previously shown on our calendar page (this means the Calendars in the Church Magazine and on the notice boards may have the wrong date).

Traffic signs of Parwich #20

Although the “Caution: Elderly People” sign has finally disappeared from Kiln Lane, there are a couple of remaining signs whose purpose has outlived the conversion of Rathbone Hall into a private residence.

Here’s the first of them: a warning that beyond Gardener’s Cottage and the entrance to Rathbone Hall, there will be no further room for vehicles to pass each other, or to make U-turns.

As we’ve already established, the hairpin bend at the top of Creamery Lane is a regular trouble spot for unsuspecting larger vehicles. So, does this sign do an effective job?

Junior Tennis

Due to the poor response to last week’s tennis sessions we have decided to change the format.

From 10am – 11am the courts will be available for the 7 -11 year olds to come and play with help from 3 of our older juniors (Alex, Will and Catherine). The cost will be £1 per session. From 11am to noon the courts are available for the senior Juniors to play and the cost for this is also £1.

If there is sufficient interest then coaching will be made available on 6th, 13th, 20th June and 4th 11th 18th July.

This will cost £18 up front for all 6 sessions or £4 per session on a turn up basis.

If you are interested please can you let Nia know ASAP as the coach needs to be booked. (Alternatively  email your name and contact details to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, clearly indicating that it for forwarding to the Tennis Club.)

Local Roads

Local roads have been feature in both yesterday’s Stunner and our local Police newsletter. Are the problems on the A515 and the B5056 related?

The Stunner: Series of crashes sparks new wave of safety worries – a string of crashes along the A515 between Ashbourne and Alsop-en-le-Dale has led to more calls for safety improvements.

PC Paul Cooper: Many people have commented on problems with the Temporary Traffic lights along the B5056. If they do not seem to be working correctly please let us know so we can call out the contractors. (Ring either Police Non Emergency 0345 1233333 or Call Derbyshire 08456 058 058) Some of the problems have been because they have had diesel stolen from them. If anyone is seen acting suspiciously near to the lights, or if any vehicles are parked nearby, please let us know so we can check them out.

Is this increase in incidents on the A515 between Fenny Bentley and Alsop-en-le-Dale just chance, or does it relate to an increase in HGVs following the raising of the low bridge at Fenny Bentley, or is the new 50mph speed limit a factor? Alternatively are the so called ‘temporary’ traffic lights on the B5056 resulting in more local traffic using this stretch of the A515?

Until the Highways (Derbyshire County Council) have a solution for the subsidence on the B5056 more vehicles will have to use the A515 and the awkward exits from Tissington and Alsop-en-le-Dale. Even when Highways decide on proposals for the B5056, things will necessarily get worse before they get better. What are your thoughts?

Please pass this message on to any keen young footballers in the area:

mayfield-panthers

Mayfield Panthers under 11s (boys in the 2008/9 school year 6 or 5) are currently scouting for new talent for their September under 12s football team.   We are just coming to the close of a very successful 2008/9 season playing 9 a side but will play 11 a side from this September.  We are based and train in Ashbourne, and play our matches on Sunday afternoons in the Burton Junior Football League.  Training will be available from FA qualified coaches and ex-professional players.   If you are interested in coming for a trial or know anyone who would be, please email parwich@hotmail.co.uk (marked F.A.O. Lynne) or call Lynne on 474 with your details and we will get in contact with you to arrange a trial.

This week’s Stunner

Ashbourne News Telegraph seem to be publishing their on-line e-newspaper earlier on Wednesdays but, if you prefer paper in your newspaper, go to Janet in the Sycamore for today’s edition.

p.1 – Is Ashbourne ready for a French Connection? Ashbourne is going to be asked whether it would like to be twinned with the French town of Soisy-sur-Seine in Northern France.  Does anyone in Parwich know the town?  Would Parwich then be twinned with a village five miles outside Soisy only reachable by a road liable to imminent collapse?  Does the outlying village have its own band?  Is it named after a local A road?

Traffic signs of Parwich #18 and #19

Here’s another double sign, located on Smithy Lane on the way out of the viilage. Firstly, is it useful to indicate the right hand junction? And secondly, is it necessary to warn drivers of the impending Z-bend?

Film Night – Friday

With wonderful photography of the Australian countryside, this Romantic epic film is set in northern Australia at the beginning of World War II, where an English aristocrat inherits a cattle station the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn stock-man to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country’s most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbour only months earlier.  A truly enjoyable film.

May’s Newsletter from PC Ian Cooper

police-safer-neighbourhood-logo Update from your local Officer         May 2009

Over the past month we have had more incidents than in recent months, with some thefts, damage, and suspicious prowlers. The A515 has also seen a few Road Traffic Collisions.

Overnight on Saturday 14th March 2009, damage was caused to some fencing at a farm between Tissington Village and the Ford. The damage appeared to be a deliberate act rather than accident damage. Damage, in the form of graffiti, occurred between 24th and 30th March 2009 in Fenny Bentley. The bus shelter seat, speed limit signs and bridge were sprayed with grey and black painted ‘tags’. Thorpe has also been the location for further damage, with a Vauxhall Cavalier car being scratched whilst parked on Church Lane, sometime between 11th and 13th April 2009. If anyone has seen anyone acting suspiciously in these areas, around these times please let me know. Continue Reading »

Congratulation to Jonathan Chadfield who completed the London Marathon on Sunday in 4 hours 18 minutes.  He was raising money for the Isle of Man Hospice.  He said to his Mum,

The last few miles, I’ve never known pain like it.

Of course his Mum, Sandra, is doing the Moonwalking Marathon for Breast Cancer in May.

Julie Goodwin, whose parents Margaret & Roy live in the village, also ran the London Marathon, finishing in 3 hours 46 minutes. Julie was raising funds for bowel cancer and Fair Play Special Needs Youth Club.

Video of the Church Fete

Here is some footage from the Church Fete last Sunday. Didn’t we have a lovely time….and wasn’t the weather kind. Great to see the village out in force practising for Wakes!

Many thanks to Mike G for his camerawork and Martin C for his production skills.

Term dates for the Primary School.

Church Group Magazine

A reminder to the people who have the magazine delivered that their subscription is now due.  Could those that have not renewed already, pay the person who delivers their copy.  The magazine is a bargain at £5 per year.

The magazine serves the parishes of Alsop-en-le-Dale, Fenny Bentley, Thorpe, Tissington and Parwich.  If you want a copy, they are available in each of the churches. Alternatively, they will be accessible electronically here each month.

Apologies for the delay in putting the March and April issues on-line.  They can be accessed by clicking on the relevant month below.

The May issue should be available at the weekend.

The Parwich Odd Fellows set in motion a very successful day. A big thank you to everyone, including the organisers, especially Mick Edge without whose vision, ideas and determination, the day would not have happened, all the helpers and those who came along and supported the day.

The morning’s march by the Odd Fellows and the Derbyshire Dales Cyberscouts, led by Doveholes Brass Band, followed the route of the Wakes March, though with fewer refreshment stops!!  The Cyberscouts (including beavers, cubs and scouts) were particularly smartly turned out for their first parade in Parwich. It was very well supported and by the time the Church was reached for 11am there were more people than pews.

Andrew took the service of celebration: rousing hymns with the organ and brass band, dedication of two new kneelers commemorating the British Legion and Norman Edge; and the dedication of the four new banners for the Cyberscouts. Andrew’s address drew on St. George, the Good Samaritan and Jesus as examples of the importance of service to our communities.

The march continued around the village, finishing at the Memorial Hall for lunch and the chance to enjoy some live music.

The celebrations continued into the afternoon with the Church Fete. The afternoon was interspersed with Winster Morris Dancers  and the well-known band  the A52s.

Thank you from the Jaguar Drivers

A thank you from members of South Staffs Jaguar Drivers.

The 26th April turned out to be a glorious Spring day for us all. Our members enjoyed some wonderful driving in their classic cars and a most enjoyable afternoon at Crich Tramway Village.

Members have asked me to express their delight at passing through Parwich and being held up by your Brass Band procession, not a hindrance but a bonus.

We try to enjoy our vehicles without inconvenience to others, and I enjoyed returning to the village in the evening for just one drink in the garden of The Sycamore.

Wishing you well.

Chatsworth Hosts Cyberscouts Event

cyberscounts-11Next Event – Saturday 2nd May at Alsop-en-le-Dale – interested in joining ring Mandy on (778)

All sections of the 1st Derbyshire Dales Cyberscouts were made most welcome in the stunning grounds of Chatsworth Estate for their April meeting. The day was opened by Group Scout Leader, Tim Polkinghorne, with the now routine Investiture and Moving Up ceremonies followed by badge awards in recognition of new skills and/or knowledge gained by members. The event was filmed by the Scouting Association with a view of showing footage of the day’s activities across the country to other scouting groups. The intention is to raise awareness of how traditional scouting can be achieved and delivered in a different way to weekly meetings, as Cyberscouts meet only 9 times a year on a Saturday at various locations across Derbyshire. Church Fete

The Church Fete tomorrow will be a super fun event, with lots of activities, games, stalls and teas happening throughout the afternoon.  Of course one of the ‘highlights’ will be the infamous famous A52’s who have just flown in from a gig in Mexico and will be rounding off their tour, tomorrow, on The Green at Parwich.

Apart from a chance for us all to have a super day tomorrow, there is a serious theme behind the fete.  Our Church needs urgent repairs and over £20,000 is required to safely maintain this building.  It really doesn’t matter whether or not you are a churchgoer, none of us would like to see the closure of one of the centre pieces of our community – so come along and enjoy Sunday’s events.

If you have any bric-a-brac/second hand goods please either bring them to:
Today – To Ben’s, 1 Croft Avenue
Sunday from 1.30pm – The Green
Sunday morning – if dry – leave them on Sunday in tidy pile near the beech tree on The Green

Things already donated – quality rugs, books, bookcase, 3 Edwardian chairs (a restoration project), lampshades (including new M&S ones), ocassional lamps, tools etc.

All cakes and home-made produce can be taken today to Andrew & Rachel’s, Church Farm, Creamery Lane, brought to Church in the morning or to the Cake Stall in the afternoon.
