Traffic signs of Parwich #1

Some people like traffic signs. Parwich can be a confusing place for drivers who haven’t been here before: there are tricky bends, dead ends and narrow roads to negotiate, and there’s always the danger of encountering a young child or a household pet around the next corner. If our traffic signs prevent even one serious accident from taking place, then their presence is justifed.

Other people loathe traffic signs. Some of them are too obvious, pointing out features that we can see perfectly well for ourselves. Others are unnecessary, pointing out features that cause no danger or difficulty. Others are redundant, pointing out features that have disappeared. Without traffic signs, our village would be a more visually attractive place, and drivers would be encouraged to think for themselves – perhaps even driving with more care and attention as a result.

There’s a strong case to be made for keeping some of our traffic signs, and there’s an equally strong case to be made for getting rid of others. So with that in mind, we’re going to run a series of posts on the traffic signs of Parwich. At the end of each post, there will be a poll, asking you whether the sign in question is useful or unnecessary. Whatever your opinion, we hope you’ll take the opportunity to state your case and have your say.

Off we go then, with our first sign… Continue Reading »

Use it or Lose it.

This year sees the 19th Season of the Parwich Crown Green Bowling Club, but could this be its final year?

We are still attempting to get more new members but to no avail.  Why not come along and enjoy these great facilities, the new season starts on Monday with evening sessions on Mondays at 6pm until dusk for the next 8 weeks.  Please come along and have a try, we’ll even lend you the bowls.  All you need is a flat-soled pair of shoes.  All ages are welcome.

We still have two league teams.  The ‘Tuesday’ team is in the lower Matlock and District League.  Tuesday matches start at 6.30pm and are played on a home and away basis.  Our ‘Thursday’ team games start in the afternoon at 1.30pm, again on a home and away basis.  We also play friendly matches most weekends.

The Green is open for play anytime during the week, except of course when a league match is played.  Without new players the club will close, so the saying ‘use it or lose it’ may well soon come true as far as bowls is concerned in the village.

Please note that the trip to Kedelston by the W.I. has been postponed until later in the year.

A slightly belated notice to say that we now have three additional members of the Parwich First Responders  – Val S, Colin B snd Ben B. Congratulations to you on completing your training and many thanks for providing your time to support this essential service.

Parwich First Responders now comprise 21 front line volunteers. The addition of new responders helps the group to provide as much coverage as possible in the event that one of us ‘has a bit of a turn’.  Ambulances can sometimes take a while to reach us so it is very helpful to have people available who can be on the scene very quickly.

Responders indicate their availability each week and a rota is drawn up. This rota is currently put together by Heather H as part of her Duke of Edinburgh community service work. The job is ideally suited to young people doing Duke of Edinburgh. If you would like to take on the role once Heather’s time comes to an end later this year, please contact Martin C or Sue H on 334. Similarly, contact the same people for information on becoming a First Responder.

Cyberscouts – Can you help?

The new Cyberscouts have proved to be very popular in our area and we will see some of them joining the parade & Church service in the village at The St George’s Day Parade on Sunday 26th April.

Unfortunately one of their leaders  is leaving and they desperately need some more helpers/leader.  Why not find out more?

The next day of Cyberscouting is on Easter Saturday.  The day is being spent at Chatsworth, with Lewis Noble running a painting session in the morning followed by an afternoon at the Farm Park.   Why not come along for the day or part of it/ and find out more about being a Cyberscout leader?

If you are interested in finding out more, please ring Mandy on 778.

Faulty Traffic Lights, Potholes etc.

At Thursday night’s Annual Parish Council meeting, the problems of our “temporary” traffic lights were discussed at length.

These first set of lights going towards Ashbourne but after Bradbourne Mill – the road should be sorted by late summer.

As for the second set of lights nearer to Bentley Brook, there is no timescale as to when reconstruction will take place.

It was acknowledged that the lights are often faulty, which could lead to a serious accident – so can we all start reporting these faults

PC Ian Cooper said that after every report, the police will check the lights and then the contractor will go out and readjust the lights.

Please only report them if they are faulty, and not just if you think they are too slow at turning green. That way, maybe we will end up with reliable lights – but this is obviously going to be a long term issue.

Please ring the Call Derbyshire number: 08456 058 058 or 01629 760247. The County Council call centre staff with then get someone to look at the issue. The same number can be used for potholes and icy roads.

Cracking Easter holiday events at Peak District Visitor Centres

Spring Fun Days at Peak District National Park visitor centres will show how nature stages its own Easter egg-stravaganza in the wild.

Children can join in free fun activities while learning how to protect wild birds and other creatures at this crucial time of year for raising young in the national park. Games, competitions, painting, mask-making and nature walks will all be on offer. Along the way, youngsters can learn the importance of keeping dogs on leads so they do not disturb nests, cutting down on fire-risks and caring for the countryside.

Spring Fun Days are being held at: Continue Reading »

It’s that time of the week again with the release of the 1 April edition of the Stunner – available to buy in the pub or to read on your computer when the e-edition goes on-line.  I will start with a story which appears later in the paper but celebrates the achievements of Parwich’s own rugby hero, Bertie L:

RyanAir have just released £5 flights including taxes (but not all the optional charges) the offer is only available until midnight tomorrow.  i.e. – Sat 9th May returning Wed 13th May – £5 each way from East Midlands to Carcassonne.  There are 20 destinations available from East Midlands & 27 from Birmingham.

You do have to be patient,  searching & being  flexible on dates to get the £5 flights – it states Special Offer when the dates & times of flights come up.  We have used this offer twice in the past two years – as long as you don’t mind Ryan Air it can be a cheap break away.

The Parwich Memorial Hall funding group are currently preparing a grant application which, if successful, will make our new Hall entirely self-sufficient for all its energy needs – as well as generating extra electricity for the village.

Due to our location at the end of a valley, residents will be aware of how windy it can get – particularly on the top of Parwich Hill. Therefore, the plan is to capture this wind energy by installing a wind turbine on top of the hill.

Thanks to the latest technological advances, modern wind turbines are much less visually intrusive than they used to be – as you can see from our artist’s impression.

Bertie Linnell – the young blonde hooligan – has for the last year been the Captain of Ashbourne Rugby Club U9 team. Yesterday he lead them to the final of the NLD (Notts, Leics and Derbys – for the non sporting types….) competition. Unfortunately they were then defeated by West Bridgeford but Bert has consistently been man of the Match and we may have found an outlet for his energies!

bertie-11Ashbourne RUFC  says “The Under 9’s travelled to Newark to participate in the Notts, Lincs & Derbys Cup to take on the best teams from across the three counties. Most of the opposing teams are from much bigger and more established clubs, but Ashbourne displayed maximum quality, effort and determination to come away with a well-deserved runners up spot.

The defeat in the final cannot disguise what was a fantasic achievement by the team to be recognised as the second best Under 9’s team from across the three counties of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.

Ornithology

Can any local kids identify where these birds have been snapped?

A stunning stained glass slideshow.

At Andrew Robinson’s request, John Fuller-Sessions has put together a splendid photographic catalogue of the stained glass windows inside St. Peter’s Church.

There are 41 images in total. Some are of the full windows, and some are detailed close-ups.

As the images look best in “full-screen” mode, we have loaded them into a slideshow on Flickr.

Please click here to view the slideshow – which will look even better if you press F11 on your keyboard before clicking the link. (When you’ve finished viewing, simply press F11 again.)

You can select individual images for viewing by clicking this link – or alternatively by starting here, and clicking each “next image” in sequence.

Lastly, all of these images have been archived on our ever-popular PHOTOS page – which is now once again up to date with all of our recent photography.

horticultural-talk

Stuart Dixon travels widely, sharing his love of the traditional English garden in “down to earth” talks to horticultural societies. He is a Royal Horticultural Society, Hardy Plant NCCPG & GCS and National Trust speaker, much of his knowledge and expertise being gained from the restoration of his own 18th Century garden at Hebb’s Farmhouse near Nottingham, which has been featured on BBC TV.  So come and enjoy an informative evening organised by The Horticultural Society – Another Community Event.

Comments, please…

Another report from Parwich’s own sports reporter, Nia:

Yet again the ladies of Parwich (in the most flexible method of interpretation…) remain victorious in their conquest of the Leek Netball league. With Wendy swanning off to the sunshine, Olivia was drafted back onto the team but Jan seemed not to need any support in the D as she set a new 95% scoring record. Continue Reading »
