Loose Women

Friday 12.30pm on ITV sees the Loose Women panel involved in various topical debates viewed from a female prospective.  One issue they will be discussing is “Strictly Come Dancing” and Tom Chambers will be appearing.  This is a good excuse to watch television during your lunch hour because judging by tomorrow’s forecast you won’t be enjoying a balmy September day.

Ruby Hickmott who has been doing this job incredibly well, is having to resign due to pressure of work. She has made a great effort to get this off the ground so far and has set a good pattern for someone to follow.

Just to remind you, Project Parwich is the umbrella name for all the events that are being organised to raise money towards the rebuilding of our new Memorial Hall. It is even more important now that we have Planning Permission and the final Lottery Bid has been submitted. Lots of great people have organised things so far – things that we can enjoy while we raise money. Briefly the job consists of;-

  • Keeping a calendar of events that people would like to organise and making sure that they don’t clash with other village events.
  • Putting organisers in touch with others who have volunteered help
  • Keeping that list of volunteers up to date and encouraging others to help.

If you feel that you might be interested then phone Patti Beasley on 390206 to chat.

Meanwhile, if you have already said you are going to organise something can you please contact Patti until someone takes on the co-ordinators role?

2008 Flower & Vegetable Show on Sunday

Have you thought about entering the Horticultural Show on Sunday?  There are classes for flowers, flower arranging, fruit, vegetables and home produce.  The local classes are judged in relation to what is entered, so don’t assume your produce will not win a prize.  Enter a few classes and you are almost guaranteed to win something.  Don’t forget the massive auction of produce after the presentation at 3pm.  Click on the photo below to see the full Schedule.

Paper copies with entry forms are available at the Legion and the Sycamore

This Week’s Stunner

If the ‘movers and shakers’ of Alsop, Ballidon, Pikehall and Parwich were away last week they must be on a fortnight’s holidays.  It was particularly hard to find any local links in this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph 3rd Sept 2008, not even a photo of Debbie.  I found only one specific mention, though thank you Patti for pointing out the one that was missed (I had thought it odd there was nothing on the Snail Trail):

  • p.5 Ashbourne 50+ Forumhave various speakers giving information about the planned new Ashbourne Hospital at the Ashbourne Leisure Centre from 10am to 12-30pm on Friday 12th September.  Anyone needing help to get to the event phone 01629 532 446 no later than tomorrow, or email christine.hopkins@derbyshire.gov.uk.
  • p.20 This weekend sees the start of the Wirksworth Festival (click here for the Festival website and the full programme).
  • p.23 Our MP Patrick McLoughlin has arranged for a free tour of Parliament on the 28th of October.  Constituents interested in being included should write to Patrick McLoughlin MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA or email him on partick.mcloughlin.mp@pariament.uk
  • p25. Parwich Snail Trail, an advert along with editorial comment on Saturday’s fund raising event for Project Parwich (the new Memorial Hall).  From 10am to 4pm (admission £1) there will be 20 stalls arround the village selling everything from new and unwanted gifts to books, household furniture items, furniture and antiques. (Postponed because of bad weather.)  Continue Reading »

Loan of clothes rail

Does anyone have a free standing clothes rail that I can use for the snail trail on Saturday?

Cheers!
Debbie W
tel. 568

The above is a step nearer to happening.  As you know we have already received a Stage I grant to help us finalise the plans and gain planning permission.  Now after a lot of hard work the Project Group have completed the final Stage II form for our Big Lottery Fund grant application, and Mike G-P took it in person to their Offices in Birmingham this morning.

Well done all who have got us to this stage!  Now we wait and keep our fingers crossed.

Also everyone, don’t forget about the fund raising Parwich Snail Trail on Saturday.  You can also make donations to the project on-line by clicking in the PROJECT PARWICH box in the right hand column.

The following was received today:

Parwich tennis drama

At Parwich tennis club yesterday our redoubtable mixed doubles second team took on Darley Dale, hoping to add to our single win so far this season. We got off to a flying start when one of our opponents didn’t turn up, meaning that we were awarded three of the nine sets before a ball was even hit. Despite our affable demeanour, we were determined to dispense with the perception that we are purely social players, by setting about the task of clinching victory with a degree of grit that you can no longer find on our resurfaced courts.

A critical moment came in the second round, when Drummond and Harrison were losing 8-3, with the victor being the first to win 9 games. Refusing to be defeated, they duly won the next five games, leaving their opponents aghast at the prospect of losing the tie break, which they duly did. We staggered off the court to muted applause, since we had kept everyone else waiting so long, but it did help us secure a victory overall by 6 sets to 3. If we had adjourned to the Sycamore, which sadly wasn’t yet open, the drinks would surely have been on our opponents.

The tennis season is far from over – on Saturday-Sunday 13th-14th is the Club Singles Championship (members only). Then the Mixed Doubles Championship will be held on 20th-21st Sept – this is a semi-open competition in which only one of the pair needs to be a member. And do support club nights on Fridays from 7.30 – 9.00 pm!

Burning the midnight oil

Spare a thought for those that have been working incredibly hard on our behalf to complete the Big Lottery Fund bid for the Memorial Hall project.  The deadline is on Tuesday, and various people (including Amanda, Brian, Kevin, Lynette, Mike and Val, as well as lots of others) have put in and are still putting in a lot of hours to ensure the bid is as good as it can be.

Your commitment to this community venture is much appreciated.  Also it is good to see that Graham and Amanda can still smile despite their computer blowing up this afternoon taking a section of the bid with it.  Amanda with remarkable calm said, “Oh, it will be alright, we should only have to redo a couple of hours work“.

There has been an increase in the theft of gardening equipment recently, mainly hedge trimmers, chainsaws, etc, from gardens, sheds & outbuildings. Ensure that such items are locked away securely. Make a note of serial numbers for your possessions, mark items with your postcode plus your house number or the first two letters of the house name and maybe take photographs.

Thieves find identifiable property more difficult to sell on. Often, property recovered by the police cannot be returned to the rightful owners simply because it cannot be identified.

If you require any home security advice, please call the Crime Reduction Officers on 0845 164 1644.

Thank you.

This week’s stunner

Are all the movers and shakers of Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich & Pikehall on holiday?  Well here are some possible local interest items in today’s (27th August 2008) Ashbourne News Telegraph:

  • p.2 Hartington Cheese Factory is now officially owned by Long Clawson Dairy Ltd.  People wanting to comment on this to the OFT have until Friday (either email the case officer Marie Didierlaurent on marie.didierlaurant@oft.gsi.gov.uk or phone her on 0207 211 8427).
  • p.3 QEGS students again set new records, this time with their GCE results.  Congratulations to all, particularly to Catherine B who achieved 10 A/A* grades.  The Great Roberto may be over shadowed by the successes of the next generation.  (Denstone College students also achieved excellent results.)
  • p.5 On Saturday Ashbourne councillors will be undertaking a traffic survey, volunteers to help are wanted.  This is part of their campaign for an Ashbourne bypass on the A515.
  • p.6 The suspect in the Biggin cannabis raid, Ming Huang, was remanded in custody to appear in court again this week (see our previous post).
  • p.27 Wirksworth Festival‘s Art & Architecture Trail is to run on the weekend of 6/7th September.
  • p.28 Craft Fair in Tissington village hall on Saturday.
  • p.28 The Riff Raff Festival will be taking place on 12, 13 & 14th of September near Hulland Ward.  Tickets limited to 400.
  • p.29 Ashbourneis ahead of Parwich in the race to provide allotments (see our previous post).  The 1908 Smallholding and Allotments Act states councils should be funding such endeavors.
  • p.38 Public Notice issued by County Council re. new speed limits on stretches of the A515.  Various additional 30, 40 and 50 mph speed restrictions to be applied.  It effects our stretch but the notice does not make it clear what speed limits are being imposed where.
  • p45 Report on Bradbourne Fell race, but their photographer seems to have missed ‘son of’ and Graham (see our post for more photos).
  • p.46 Presentation of trophies last Friday night for the Summer Pool League.  The Sycamore was runner up for the Captains Trophy.
  • p.47 Results of the Summer League Footballlist Biggin in fourth place over all, though a few matches are still to be played this week.

As always let us know what we have missed.

August Newsletter from PC Ian Cooper

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL OFFICER   August 2008

Not too many incidents to report this past month, but a few items of interest to pass on. Since the last newsletter we have had the Community Forum held at Tissington Village Hall, and also a Crime Prevention Event at Kniveton Village Hall.

We’ve had some good phone calls from the public reporting suspicious vehicles and persons in the Tissington, Kniveton and Parwich areas. Calls relating to vehicles causing concern at Sandybrook, and at Alsop provided us with some information that was worth noting, and also a driver being reported for motoring offences.

2012 here we come!

Parwich was outstandingly represented in the Bradbourne Fell Race – a hard & wet 6 mile run, crossing the stream twice & up exceptionally muddy banks.  The nearest fells maybe a couple of hours drive away, but it “felt like fell running”.   Parwich runners included Paul & Alex D, Graham J & Nia L, George & Charlie S, Rannoch, Thayer, Bertie & Lexie L – 5 of the 6 members of the Linnell family ran this punishing course, with Ed as official photographer.

When asked, Graham said his tactics for the race were to focus on a nice woman’s backside & follow it – “I found a good one this year”.  His wife said “It’s never going to be mine!!”  Comments from the younger athletes ranged from “easy” to “very hard”.  However ‘son of’ says “Mine’s a Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan”.  Graham who failed in the challenge is buying alot of curries tonight.

The guts and determination by all the runners was inspiring (not quite enough to make me want to join in).  To see our younger runners, 4 of whom were between 7 & 11, having the attitude ‘I’ll give it a go, I will do this’ should bode well for 2012, let’s hope it becomes infectious.

For more photos & Graham’s reaction to the realisation that the curry is on him ….. Continue Reading »

A splendid article from the Derby Mercury of May 23rd, 1883, has recently been drawn to our attention, describing the reopening of Alsop church following the major rebuilding programme which resulted in the church as we know it today.  Ten clergy, including the Archdeacon of Derby, and a large number of gentry including “the misses FitzHerbert”, were present at what appears to have been an event of great celebration and considerable conviviality.

The Archdeacon compared the previous building to “something like a lumber room”, also commenting that “the material fabric of a church was designed in order that people might seek in the worship of God the means of building up their own spiritual life”.  The Rev. E. H. May, vicar of Parwich and Alsop, referred to a book by Thomas Becon, chaplain to Archbishop Cranmer, who had sought refuge in Alsop in the late 1500s; Becon was pleasantly surprised to find the area much less “barbarous, rude and barren” than he had expected.

In some concluding remarks, Mr S. C. Allsopp MP, who had business connections with Burton on Trent, said that “in the old days of the Meynell Hounds, the only persons who followed the hunt were Peak parsons and Burton brewers.  He hoped that in years to come the Peak parsons and Burton brewers would not only follow the fox together, but join in every good work which was needed in the parish”.

Christopher Harrison

Tomorrow at the Methodist Service held in Parwich Church at 2.30pm sees the dedication of the lectern in memory of Minnie Smith and the glass cross in memory of John Lees. Everyone is welcome to the service.

Minnie Smith by her daughter Jan Smith.
We are dedicating a new lectern in memory of my Mum, Minnie Smith. Minnie was born in a cottage on Alsop Road in 1912 and spent her early years in the village, attending the Methodist chapel and the local school. She often used to talk to me about the headmaster, Booth Hampson, who she always had a great deal of respect for. I gather that she wasn’t always a model pupil, as Mr Hampson was known to throw his keys across the desk to attract her attention during lessons.

Mum left Parwich to work first at Bradbourne Hall and later for Dr Madge in Ashbourne, before marrying Jim Smith in 1941. They spent 55 happy years together before my Dad died in 1996. My Mum always retained her deep affection for Parwich and I was brought to the village from a very early age. I am told I learned to walk at Flatts Stiles, then the home of Mum’s cousin, Mrs Mabson, on my first birthday. I know that Mum always felt that she was coming home when she came to Parwich and until her death in 2000 regularly attended the chapel services. I know that she would have been thrilled that our friend Colin has made this beautiful lectern in her memory.

John Lees by his daughter Janice Wigley.
Myself, and indeed all the family, especially my Mum, Peggy Lees are delighted that the cross in the Lady Chapel at Parwich Church is to be dedicated to Dad, John Lees. Dad was born in Ballidon in 1919 and ’emigrated’ to Parwich when he married Mum, he attended Parwich Chapel from then on. He loved chapel and I also have happy memories from childhood of new dress & gloves for Easter Sunday & Anniversary Services when the chapel would be full to bursting- even the balcony!

Thank goodness the ‘Chapel’ remains here and thanks, good luck & best wishes to all who have helped to achieve this.

Green Bins – was yours emptied?

Did anyone not have their green bins emptied yesterday – we certainly didn’t.  I have been onto the environmental hotline and they have said that if a number of streets have been missed out they will try to send the contractors back out.  Please either ring 01629 761215 or ring Jane on 665 or let me know through the comments.

SECRET GARDENS OF BAKEWELL from 2pm to 6pm on Sunday 24th August.

It is a chance to see parts of Bakewell not normally available, there are some lovely garden treasures tucked away, some are large & some small, with interesting plant collections and fabulous views – all are very access friendly. The gardens are situated around Bridge Street, Bath Street, Castle Street, Milford and Holme Lane, so it is a distinctly “watery” theme. Refreshments at the MEDWAY CENTRE, (near Lloyds Bank) with plant sales and Traidcraft. One charge of £4 at any garden entrance gives access to all gardens, maps also available from the Tourist Office. Visit gardens in any order. Free shuttlebus from Rutland Square, but the majority are only minutes from here. All proceeds will support the continuing work of OXFAM. Look out for green balloons on the day. All welcome! Cannabis haul in Biggin

Derbyshire Constabulary seized 300 cannabis plants at a house in Biggin on Tuesday.  They are still investigating, and their press release reports a 24 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of producing cannabis and is due to appear in Chesterfield Magistrates Court.

Detective Inspector Jed Lowe said:

The warrant was executed after we received information from the local community that drugs may be in the property. Information such as this is invaluable and we would urge anyone with information about drugs in their neighbourhood to contact police.”

2008 Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards

Following the success of the last two years’ Sports Awards, we are pleased that details of the 2008 event have now been unveiled. This is an important opportunity to celebrate people across the Derbyshire Dales who have made a significant contribution to sport in a variety of ways whether as a player, coach or volunteer.  We would like to find these people and reward them for their contribution to sport.

There are two documents which can be downloaded, one detailing the criteria for nominations, including the 14 different categories that can be nominated, the second is the actual nomination form which can be used to provide information on you and the person, team or club you are nominating, telling us why you think they should be honoured.

The Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards feed into the Derbyshire Sport Awards and the winners at the district level will automatically be entered into the County competition. The winners from the County Awards will then be considered at the East Midlands Sports Awards.

The closing date for all nominations has been extended to Tuesday 26th August 2008 – they would really like to see some more nominations coming in.

A presentation evening will be arranged in the Autumn to celebrate the Awards and winners

What the paper says

The weeks just role by and it’s Wednesday again, with the Ashbourne News Telegraph – 20th Aug 2008- dropping on my doormat again.  Stories this week include:

Thank you to the paper for the two plugs for PARWICH.ORG and as aways let us know what we have missed.

Thank you to Gareth Butterfield of the Ashbourne News Telegraph for forwarding the following to PARWICH.ORG:

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY
PR 519 – 18 August 2008

Approval for two new village halls in national park

The Peak District National Park planning committee has given unanimous
approval for two new village halls to meet the needs of the 21st
century.

Villagers of Parwich (near Ashbourne) and Over Haddon (near Bakewell),
who attended the meeting, were delighted that they can now replace
out-dated, inadequate facilities.

Both schemes resulted from the communities and their designers working
together with planning officers to achieve modern, energy-efficient
buildings which meet local needs as well as enhance the national park.

The new halls will be stone-built to harmonise with their village
settings, with disabled access and limited parking. Both have won
backing in principle from various funding bodies, including the Big
Lottery Fund.  Continue Reading »

Re-launch of a Parwich enterprise

The Autumn Flame Candle Company, based in Parwich, is to be re-launched.

Tracy Marshall first set up the Company, making and selling candles from her own home between four and five years ago. “I was always interested in art and crafts and wanting to make my own things. I was interested in making cards and got a craft magazine. I saw a candle making kit at the back and ordered it. I was hooked. I started buying more and more moulds, different waxes and colours, just doing my own thing.”

The idea was to create a home business that could start small alongside having a family, but that had the potential to grow. However, when Tracy was pregnant with her son, now aged two, she had some health difficulties and the wax smells from the candle making process made her feel sick.
