Today I went across to Lea Gardens near Tansley to get the Horticultural Society’s two season tickets, and was surprised to see how many of the earlier azaleas and rhododendrons are already in flower.

On Easter Monday make your way to Alsop Church, refreshments are on sale from 11am -4pm. To quote Christine, an Alsop resident,

Great News – The Grand Opening Countdown – 1 day to go
Tomorrow, Saturday 22nd March our new village shop is opening at The Sycamore. Well done to Janet. The opening times over the Bank Holiday are 10am – 9pm. Watch the blog to keep up to date with the shop opening hours from Tuesday.

Last night we had a great evening at the Memorial Hall. The WI had invited Carolyn back again, (after her success with Christmas Card making) this time to make Easter Cards. All sorts of things had been cut out ready for us and then we were able to use all our ‘creative talents’ to make some super cards. Carolyn also showed us some examples of scrapbooking, I was amazed at the professional results, which we were assured were easy to do. I went onto to Internet when I got home to try to find a definitive description for this craft.
What is ‘Scrapbooking’?
The craft of scrapbooking is the preservation of your photographs and memories in archival quality albums using photo-safe materials. Photographs are cropped, pages decorated and memories recorded to create beautiful keepsakes for the enjoyment of generations to come. Stickers, decorative scissors, cropping aids, coloured papers and pens are all used to create imaginative and lasting album pages.
I went as a visitor to the WI and was made to feel really welcome, finishing off with some super home-made cakes really rounded off the evening. So watch the Calendar for details of other up and coming WI events.

Although we can no longer buy daily national newspapers within the village, there are a number of alternatives.
For local newspapers, the new shop inside the Sycamore will stock the Derby Evening Telegraph and the Ashbourne News Telegraph (also the free paper the Peak Advertiser).
For newspaper deliveries, the MSR Newsgroup in Ashbourne offers a 7 day service. Phone 343943 to place your order, or call in at the shop at 25 Compton Street (next to the Sainsburys entrance, opposite the garage).
Other than that, the garage at Newhaven (just under 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Parwich) stocks both the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mirror.
It’s also worth pointing out that there is a local milk delivery service which covers Parwich. Call J F Gibson on 310250 to add your household to their rounds. The service is based at Bostern Grange Farm in Thorpe.

Our thanks to Alan Gifford, for mailing us this update on Bradbourne Mill.
Much as I would like to have seen this lovely building stay as a water mill, it was not to be and Amos Developments Ltd. are making a good job of the work on site. Much of the approved conversion, other than of the mill, is in the late stages of activity.
In the mill, the top floor has been panelled but the old sack hoist has been retained in place.
On the stone floor, the ruin of the dresser has been removed and the the best pieces conserved. The removal operation was well recorded. A new staircase is in place.
The wheel pit has been dug out and the framings of both wheels are clearly visible. These have now been slowly turned by hand. (See photo below.) Both are to be rebuilt and will be recorded, since access is now possible. They will be turned from time to time with recycled water from the mill pond, since there is no direct access to the main stream water.
Against the recommendation of the Midland Mills Group, planners ruled that the 1750-ish Hurst frame should be enclosed in glass panels, which are currently being installed. About six old mill stones, some 18th Century, have been found and are now displayed in the patio area at the back of the mill.
Overall, considerable effort is being made to try and best preserve into a house conversion the main features of the mill.

Tennis coaching for juniors starts on Saturday 19th April, for a 6 week block. Any further information can be obtained from Nia Linnell on 01335 390661. The cost is £18 for all 6 sessions. A bargain!
The Parwich Under 12s team won the Southern Derbyshire league last year, so we need to maintain the high standard by getting new talent into the coaching sessions.

After several months of behind-the-scenes planning, we are delighted to announce that PARWICH.ORG is finally up and running, and open for business. If this is your first visit, then may we wish you a warm welcome.
On the front page of this site, you will find a lively and regularly updated village “blog”, which we hope will serve as a mixture between an online notice board, a newspaper and a discussion forum. Keep checking back here regularly, for a wide variety of news items, announcements, reports, reviews, photographs, opinion pieces, and occasional longer features.
Older articles can be easily found, by using the “Categories” and “Archives” sections on the right hand side of this page, or simply by clicking the “Older Posts” link at the bottom of the page.
At the end of each article, there is a space for you to leave comments. We hope that you will feel free to make the most of this feature.
Elsewhere on the site, you will find a calendar of upcoming events, and various other pages of information such as a directory of local businesses and services, a directory of local groups and organisations, and a village history.
In the next few days, we will be launching a sister site, which will contain a wealth of detailed information and reference material relating to the Parwich Memorial Hall.
Our hope is that PARWICH.ORG will become a useful and interesting “one-stop shop” for all news and information relating to the village, as well as its neighours in Alsop-en-le-Dale, Ballidon and Pikehall. This is very much your website, and so we welcome contributions from everyone. Please feel free to suggest news items for the blog, to contribute features, reviews or photographs, to publicise your event or your independent local business, or simply to leave your comments in the spaces provided.

Watch this space for more information on a new Shop in Parwich. (And keep your fingers crossed.) Janet is investigating the possibility of opening a shop in the Sycamore Inn. It would be in the dining-room and would not have as wide a range of goods as the old shop, but well done Janet! Parwich was designated as a Conservation Area in 1986. Then the Peak District National Park Authority were setting up Conservation Areas through out the Park and it was always intended to undertake a more detailed analysis of each Area separately. The PDNPA has been looking at the Parwich Conservation Area over the last ten months or so and are about to enter into public consultation on their findings. All residents will be informed about the consultation period, running for six weeks from 14th April to 23rd May 2008) and there will be an open meeting.

Ambrose Wilton has left a generous sum of money to the Church and it was agreed that this should be put towards some kneelers in Church.
What we now need are some volunteers to make them. It really is very easy, the pattern is printed on the canvas & it is just a case of cross stitch to make them. It is really relaxing doing this, you can even watch TV at the same time. If you are interested in getting involved please ring Christopher at the Vicarage – 390226.

The new head, Caroline Rodgers, is due to start at Parwich Primary School after the Easter holidays. She is currently deputy head at Swanick Primary School and has also had several acting-headships. Many will know Danny Wells, either from his courses and walks in Ashbourne, or his very successful talk last year to Parwich WI, on Joseph Paxton. He has an extensive knowledge of local history with a special interest in the Victorian period, but he is also an entertaining speaker, making his topic interesting to the more general audiences.

With a dwindling congregation and having had problems raising sufficient funds to maintain the building, it has been announced that after 159 years the Parwich Methodist Chapel is to close. The final service will be on the Church Anniversary on Sunday 4th May at 3-30pm.
Methodism will continue in Parwich with future services on the 2nd and 4th Sundays in the month at 2-30pm being held in the Lady Chapel of St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

If you don’t know already, the bid for the new Memorial Hall (community hall) build is through to the final stage. We have received a grant of £23,350 towards drawing up the actual plans, getting planning permission and completing the final form. Having given us this money, if we can get our final bid right, the Big Lottery Fund must think we are in with a good chance for the rest of the £500,000.
We will have to provide some matched funding so if you have any ideas let the Committee or your User Group Rep know. This matched funding can be ‘in kind’ and we would like to hear from anyone with skills or materials that might be relevant.

The Ashbourne Telegraph is now on sale at the Sycamore Inn. It comes out each week on Wednesday mornings. The pub is open at least from 12am to 2pm at lunchtimes and from 7pm onwards each evening.
Janet is also looking at providing the Derby Evening News, but needs at least ten people to sign up before they will deliver. If you want this paper contact Janet at the pub (tel. 01335 390212).

Sadly the Shop closed on Friday (29th Feb ’07). Although I will miss the facility to nip down the road whenever I find I need something, I will miss more the social aspect. Getting a Sunday paper meant chatting to people in the street, seeing the latest on the notice board; my record time to get a paper was seven hours and involved two impromptu meals. Alas no more.
Thanks to Emma and Jason for giving us a successful shop for five years, and best wishes to them and the children for the future.

I went to Matlock on Tuesday and when I returned I saw that the speed limit had changed on the B5056, it is now down to 50 mph an hour. Remember this is the road that runs from Bentley Brook to the Hollybush, past Longcliffe.

This month’s showing at the cinema in the Memorial Hall was The Bourne Ultimatum. It was brilliant – fast action, with each camera shot barely lasting more than a couple of seconds. Jason Bourne took on the might of the secret “intelligence” service of the USA & totally confused & dumbfounded them. My personal opinion is that there is definitely another opening for a 4th film – he never died, did he?

The film is about a fledgling writer Briony Tallis, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister’s (Keira Knightley) lover (James McAvoy) of a crime he did not commit. Based on the British romance novel by Ian McEwan.

March 14th – This film looks at the relationship between Elizabeth I and the adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh (the sexy Clive Owen), it is Cate Blanchett’s fabulous sequel to her 1998 film portraying the early life of this great Queen.

Tonight in the Memorial Hall we have got the latest showing of the well known trilogy, basically it is the American Version of James Bond – will the “rogue agent” finally uncover his full identity – the Ultimate film to see. Everyone is welcome & there are refreshments in the inteval.

What a great night, it was tense, it was close, just a few points in it. Six well planned rounds with interesting themes – Up the Union! A little bit of culture; A little personal; Odds & Ends, Truly General & finally Happy Christmas. Thanks Denis.
Seven teams battled it out, punctuated by well-earned drinks after each round (maybe that was my downfall!) At half time there were only 2 ½ points in it between the top 4 teams, so there was everything to play for. In the end it all came down to the last couple of questions, Minus 2 team were wrong-footed and pipped at the post by Ted’s Team. Well done to Tim, Sharon, Edith & Dawn who proudly strode away with the cup for the following year. Commiseration to Minus 2, Badger & Pauline, the runners-up, a fantastic effort seeing as they were only running on half strength. Continue Reading »

The Festival kicked off on Saturday 15th with a Christmas Fair and then a Carol Service today Sunday 16th at 4pm. It will run up to Twelfth Night. St. Peter’s Church will be open daily from 10am to 3-30pm.
Trees were decorated by local groups and the theme of the festival is the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Can we be confident that the contents of our shopping baskets in the current global market were produced without oppression and exploitation? To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the British Abolition of the Slave Trade, Parwich Church and the Local History Society organised a short series of events.

Following the well-attended screening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at the Memorial Hall on Friday November 16th, our next screening takes place on Friday November 30th, at 7:30 pm.
This historical drama stars Ioan Gruffudd as the pioneering anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce, supported by Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, Rufus Sewell, Benedict Cumberbatch and Youssou N’Dour. You can find more out about the film at its official website.
