Dimmingsdale

Last week a friend asked if I had been to Dimmingsdale & I had to say I’d never heard of it.  It’s situated between Oakamoor and Alton Towers in a delightful valley along the River Churnet.  So for the purposes of research three of us set out this afternoon to investigate.  The area is lovely and I would like to return to do some walking & cycling around this area, if you are into bird watching it comes recommended – if you click here and here you can get more information on the area.

Do send in some comments if you have been here & can tell us about the walks & cycling.

Ramblers Retreat

This is a country restaurant & coffee house and when we arrived it was really busy with everyone tucking into a wide variety of Sunday lunches.  They have a small lounge restaurant which was slightly faded, a large conservatory & garden, which was well occupied, in the warmer sun it must be lovely out there.  We just indulged in some puddings, apple & blackberry crumble & a bread & butter pudding, both were home-made with lashings of custard.  The portions were very generous & both were equally delicious.  Open Wed – Sun.

So if you fancy exploring somewhere new, it’s within 25 minutes – a walk, a ride and some food go to Dimmingsdale.

First Kneeler Meeting

Thursday 24th April
10am at Dam Farm

As you will have read in an earlier blog Ambrose Wilton has left a generous sum of money to the Church and it was agreed that this should be put towards some kneelers in Church. Helen is hosting the initial meeting at her house, Dam Farm (near the Pond) so that we can all find out what we have to do. The kneelers are very straightforward to make, the pattern is printed onto the fabric and it is a very simple cross-stitch design. The stitch size is quite large, so having bad eyes is not a good enough excuse not to get involved.

Did you know that some of the best tapestry sewers are men – so Parwich males don’t be shy come along & join in as well.

Our Shop

Remember that our shop is open all day today, until 9pm.  Also don’t let’s forget that if it wasn’t for Janet stepping in we wouldn’t have this amazing resource, nor should we underestimate the amount of extra work that she now has to do on top running the pub.

So let’s support the shop to ensure that it stays and we should remember to thank Janet to show our on-going appreciation for providing the community with this valuable resource.

Harthill Hall for Tea!

For the benefit of all our readers (more than 10,000 now) we decided to try a new venue for tea today.  It was an interesting experience at the Portrait Gallery Cafe at Harthill Hall.  It is just off the B5056, before you turn right towards Bakewell & left to Youlgreave.  The tea room is in a Victorian wooden ‘building’, with chandeliers, gold framed antique paintings & ‘thrones’.  Don chose the ‘throne’, (he wanted me make sure that you all know that it is really a large gold embossed chair and not a you-know -what).   As we pointed out to the very nice waitress the tea & apple cake was very nice but the coffee & Audrey’s scone left a lot to be desired.  When there are so many other good venues around we all felt that we wouldn’t rush back in hurry, but maybe we were just unlucky.

In the papers again.

Updated: Sunday April 13th.

Parwich is in the Ashbourne News Telegraph again this week, featuring in three articles.

Note: the text of some articles in the Ashbourne News Telegraph is reproduced on their website. To look for them, select ‘Search News’ in the left hand column of their Home Page, and type ‘Parwich’ or similar into the search box.

The first article talks about the review of Parwich Conservation Area and the Peak Park Authority’s draft appraisal document.

Less positively, the second article reports on an act of vandalism towards a car parked in Parwich last Friday night (a week ago). The pieces stresses the potential risks of tampering with any motor vehicle. It is stated that this car has been targeted by vandals previously and PC Cooper requests anyone having seen anything to contact Derbyshire Police on 08451 233333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Finally, there is a brief write-up of the darts match between Parwich Legion and Bradley House:

C Hampson with 10 registers, A Stevenson with a 95 finish and P Redfern had a 15 dart singles for Bradley House during their 6-3 against Parwich Legion. J Edge and J Hotchin won their singles and doubles for Parwich.

At some point later today (Friday), PARWICH.ORG will be clocking up its 10,000th page view. Considering that we launched the site less than four weeks ago, that’s a remarkable achievement, and one which surpasses even our wildest expectations.

If you had asked me to estimate our daily readership figures a couple of months ago, I would have guessed at a figure of between 80 and 100 page views per day, if we were lucky. In reality, we have been averaging between 250 and 400 views a day, hitting a record 525 views just two days ago.

The amount of support that village residents (as well as “ex-pats” and interested outsiders) have shown towards this little experiment of ours has been truly heartening. Almost every day, suggestions for articles are landing in our e-mail Inbox. Many of you have already written your own pieces for the site, or submitted your photos. More volunteers are joining our editorial team. Our comments boxes are becoming lively places in which to hang out, full of additional information, discussion, banter, and the occasional “heated debate”.

In short, you have chosen to embrace this site for what it was always intended to be: not only a “one-stop shop” for all village-related news and information, but also an interactive resource for the whole community, in which everyone can play a part.

The editorial team will be meeting up tomorrow morning, for the first time since Launch Day, to pool our ideas for forthcoming features and to plan the way forward. As well as the usual daily blog posts, you can expect many more pages to be added to the USEFUL INFO section of this site, offering more information and providing more space for local groups and societies to talk about their work. The CALENDAR section also be expanding, and our sister site for the Memorial Hall will be launching shortly.

There’s one more area in which some of you might be able to help. Despite our high traffic, we’re still a little short of incoming links from other sites. (OK, we’re very short of them.) If you run a website of your own, or if you know anyone else who does, then do please consider linking to us.

Now then – which of you is going to give us our 10,000th view? Over on the right hand column, you’ll find a little box marked BLOG STATS. Keep an eye on it during the course of Friday afternoon/evening – and as soon as you spot us reaching the magic number, then please let us know in the comments.

OK, Oscar acceptance speech over! Back to business!

Residents of Parwich should have received notification today of the details of the review of the Conservation Area.

The Peak District National Park Authority’s draft appraisal of Parwich Conservation Area is now available on-line at http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/parwich-appraisal/. Copies are also available for public viewing at the Authority’s Offices at Aldern House in Bakewell, in the Sycamore Inn Parwich or through Parwich Parish Council.

The consultation period on this document runs from Monday 14th April to Friday 23rd May 2008. If you want to comment to the Peak Park Authority either email sue.adam@peakdistrict.gov.uk, or write to the Historic Buildings Team at the Peak District National Park Authority’s headquarters, or attend the public meeting at 4-00pm to 7-30pm on Tuesday 6th May in Parwich Memorial Hall. All comments must be sent in by 5-00pm on Friday 23rd May 2008. If you have any questions about this review phone the Historic Buildings Team on 01629 816200.

Parwich Village Action Group urges as many people as possible to look at the draft appraisal and to attend the public meeting. They also feel it is important for us all to share our views with each other, which you can do either by commenting here on PARWICH.ORG or by coming along to the informal Environment Group meeting at 8pm on Monday 21st April at the Sycamore Inn. It is vital that we are happy with the appraisal as we will have to live with its implementation over the next twenty or so years.

Sharing Parwich History 2

The informal meeting at the Sycamore last night went well. Some eight of us met and looked through a collection of press cuttings and some photographs taken by the Ashbourne Telegraph, from the last fifty years. However by the end of the evening the group had been swelled by others who had come in for a drink, but were interested in the cuttings.

We did have some discussion about how a wider audience could get to see these materials, and the archives held by the Local History Society. There is not enough material for anything on the scale of the 2002 exhibition in the Church, but it would be interesting for villagers to know what is there. Nowhere in the village is currently suitable for a permanent display, but does have anyone suggestions for something more temporary?

Dates for your diary:

7-30pm Thursday 8th May an illustrated talk on “History of Cromford Mill” at the Memorial Hall (£1 members, £2 non-members).

7-30pm Wednesday 4th June an evening tour of Brassington, meet in front of the Miner’s Arms (no charge).  Contact Peter Trewhitt tel. 287 with a rough idea of numbers.

7pm Wednesday 11th June an evening tour of Parwich, laid on for Wetton Local History Group but others welcome to join in, meet in the Sycamore Inn car park (no charge).

Following some enquiries, we are going to launch a “classified adverts” service on this site.

If you live in Parwich, Alsop, Ballidon or Pikehall, and there is something which you’d like to sell (or buy, or swap, or even give away!), then please e-mail us at the usual address – parwich@hotmail.co.uk – and we’ll create a blog posting for you. We can also load up any accompanying photos.

Similarly, if there is a service which you’d like to provide for village residents, then please let us know. As well as letting people know via a blog posting, we can also add your details to our directory of local services.

All classifieds will be free of charge, but the service is open to village residents only.

To view all of our classified ads in one place, we are starting a new Category. You can click on it from the CATEGORIES section, on the right hand column of this page.

Your advert will be left up on the site until you ask us to remove it.

We hope that you will find this a useful service.

Sharing Parwich history

Don’t forget the History Society are holding an informal meeting at the Sycamore tomorrow (Thursday 10th April) at 8pm in the back room. The idea is to come along and share any information you have or memories you have or share any topics you want to find out more about. The idea is to explore recent history: your life time, your parents’ life time and your grandparents’ life time.

We have set no specific agenda as we want to see what interests the people who come along. However if no one has any specific topics in mind we have several fall backs, including local working life, the carbide shed and the Methodist Chapel. This is a new venture for the History Society, but if successful we will hold more such events.

Here are some ways in which we can help Carolyn while she is in hospital.

1. Photographs.

We are planning to take photos of familiar people and places into hospital for Carolyn. This is partly to help her keep in touch, and also so that she can let all the numerous new people (nurses, therapists, etc) know something about herself.

If you have any images that you think would be useful, please e-mail them to parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will forward them to Howard. (To avoid confusion, please mark them as “Photos for Carolyn”.)

Peter Trewhitt will also be in The Sycamore on Thursday evening with a camera, ready to photograph anyone who is willing.

2. Messages.

Do please continue leaving messages for Carolyn in the comments box (or e-mail them to us if you prefer). Howard can take them and read them to her, to help her recovery.

3. Sound Recordings.

There is also the opportunity to record short messages for Carolyn, until it is the right time for us all to visit in person. Mike Atkinson will then burn these to CD, so that Howard can play them to her in hospital. This will not only cheer her up and let her know that we are thinking of her, but it will also be another great way to assist her recovery.

If you would like to take part, then there will be a “recording session” at Creamery Cottage (Creamery Lane) between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

Alternatively, if you can’t make it on Saturday afternoon, then there will be a digital dictaphone behind the bar of The Sycamore, from Friday morning. These messages will also be burnt to CD.

Our thanks to Denis Laycock for providing us with this post.

Parwich Over Sixties began their new season of visits with a mystery trip. 37 members set off at 6 o’clock with our driver, as usual, keeping very quiet as to our destination.

We soon found ourselves up on the A515 and heading towards Buxton. We were rewarded with some excellent views across the Staffordshire Moorlands as the sun slowly sank in the skies: beautiful shades of green in the fading light.

From Buxton some of us were in ‘new territory’: the A5004 along Long Hill, overlooking the Goyt Valley and then via Kettleshulme to Macclesfield and eventually our destination, The Knot Inn at Rushton Spencer. Several of us had seen a number of hares as we were travelling, and near Kettleshulme a couple of red deer were seen in the woodlands. At The Knot we ejoyed an excellent evening repast before returning home under starlit skies with a beautiful crescent moon (Brrr….more frost!) Back in Parwich just in time to get the heat on in the garden frame after another lovely trip.

Thanks to our driver David, who somehow always finds somewhere new to take us.

Our next visit is Castle Howard near York on May 13th. At present we have spare places on this trip which may be available to non Members. The coach leaves the Green at 8am.  Contact Alan Lowes (tel. 279) to reserve a place, the cost will be £8-50 entry to Castle Howard plus the coach costs.

The First Responders asked us to post the following:

A THANK YOU FROM PARWICH FIRST RESPONDERS … AND WHY NOT JOIN US???

We have been rather busy over the last few weeks and we would like to thank all those villagers who have helped when someone has become unwell – you know who you are – and the community spirit in this village is fantastic – thank you.

For those of you who don’t know about Parwich First Responders we are a group of 15 or so villagers who have been trained by East Midlands Ambulance Service. They ‘employ’ us and insure us – after a 999 call has been received from our immediate area, if they feel it is appropriate, they call us and we respond. (more…)

Despite the cold, the showers held off and the setting sun was visible at Ashwood Park in Buxton last night. The Tuesday Team had a close run match taking two games out of the four. However they won the match with an overall score of 74 to 72. Congratulations on a very promising start to the season.

Carolyn’s Corner (No. 1)

Many thanks to Emma Spence (Pond Cottage) for supplying us with this post.

A huge amount of support and genuine concern has been expressed by people from all over the village relating to Carolyn. Most know by now that Carolyn suffered from a stroke last Wednesday and is currently recovering in the Derby Royal Infirmary.

With so many people asking after Carolyn it was thought (following agreement from Howard) that a good way to keep her friends updated on her progress would be to make use of our community website. One of the main ideas behind this is that Howard can keep us informed by sending updates to be posted on the website. Another purpose for this is that we can use the “comment” facility to leave messages that Howard can take and read to Carolyn to help her recovery. We can also use the comment facility to ask questions. A few of the questions you might have wanted to ask are answered below.

Although perhaps an unusual way to use our website, I hope this is useful to many of you and not considered inappropriate.

Howard has asked me to say thank you to everyone who has sent cards to Carolyn. He and Carolyn have opened and read each one together during his daily visits.

Some questions answered: (more…)

Ploughed On Despite Snow.

Our thanks to Di Turnbull for submitting this article.

Following the resurfacing and refurbishment of the hard play area on Parsons Croft, the P.A.R.C. committee arranged a working group to complete maintenance tasks, before the official reopening on 20th April 2008, at 11a.m.

What we didn’t expect was a fall of snow that very morning!

Undeterred, we all met, completing the necessary repairs. This involved replacing some of the posts and boards and beginning to form a planted area on the perimeter path.

It turned out to be a beautiful sunny morning. We worked hard but also had lots of fun. In four hours, the job was done. Amazing what can be achieved with a few tools, some cement, a bit of muscle and a packet of chocolate biscuits!

Thanks go particularly to the Tennis Club, whose members made up the majority of the volunteer workforce.

We all look forward to using this superb village facility in the years to come.

Bradbourne

This morning Ben & I went over to Bradbourne to support Flo at the Haven Grange Club Coffee morning in the Church Hall. They raised £103.65. It was a nice little affair, with Flo manning the bric a brac and the cake table.

I asked Flo what the Club was all about. Apparently the Church & Social Services set it up 11 years ago and it is an opportunity for elderly people to get together for coffee & then lunch. A bus comes to Parwich every Tuesday to collect members and returns during the afternoon. It is an ideal opportunity for anyone who is feeling lonely, would like some company and make new friends.

If you are interested or know someone that might benefit from this service, please ring Flo on 390619.

Whilst we were there we wandered over to the Church, but unfortunately it was locked. However over the Bank Holiday Weekend, in aid of the Church roof appeal there will be a flower festival and an affordable arts exhibition with refreshments. We’ll post more details nearer the time, but it will be a great opportunity to see & support the Church and admire those fantastic views of Parwich from the churchyard.

Fly tipping in churchyard?

My sources have informed me that illicit dumping of garden rubbish etc has been taking place in St. Peter’s churchyard.  The scale of this is probably very small, and I would not be surprised if the items concerned have merged seamlessly with the pile of authentic churchyard rubbish.  Nevertheless, I am wondering whether we should display a good-humoured notice warning those concerned that they have been seen and gently saying that we would like them to stop.

Any suggestions for suitable wording?

National Trust at Ilam & Tea

I decided this afternoon that I ‘needed’, sorry wanted to up my intake of calories, so where to go? I headed off westwards & over the county boundary into Staffordshire & to the delights of Ilam. I did a brisk but short circular walk along the river near the church & cut back across the fields to the tea rooms. It is a walk ideal for anyone, even the slightly infirm (as Ben can vouch using one crutch). We were amazed to see that amongst the swathes of wood anemones, the first bluebells open, whilst frolicking lambs played to our left.

Usually we sit outside & I have to say that the views from the tea garden are probably the best anywhere – overlooking Thorpe Cloud and the start of Dovedale. I am delighted to say that the National Trust has purchased many more chairs & tables so even more of us will be able to sit outside & soak up the views. We were too late for lunch this time, but I do highly recommend it, however the tea & chocolate cake were delicious. The tea rooms are open every day except Wednesday’s & Thursdays, but in the summer they open daily.

Ilam Park N.T is an ideal place to pop down to as it is so local, so if you haven’t been recently or got friends or family coming down to stay, do go and visit.

PARWICH.ORG notes with amusement – and no small measure of pride – that the Diocesan Office in Derby were well and truly spoofed by last week’s “Ring Tones for Parwich Church” post.

Having contacted the office to seek “fast track approval” for the project, our vicar was surprised to receive a totally genuine reply – complete with an application form for the new system, and a list of meeting dates at which the application could be considered.

“Is the direction in which they want rural churches to go?”, he wondered, as the prospect of “Crazy Frog” calling Parwich parishoners to prayer edged closer to reality.

This morning, a rather embarrassed second e-mail arrived from the same office, admitting their mistake. (“In their defence, they said that they hadn’t thought this kind of system was very typical of Parwich!”)

With the same story having been picked up by the Ashbourne Evening Telegraph, it all goes to show that a little light-hearted blogging can go a long way.

In which case, we appear to have a rather powerful tool at our disposal!

In danger of becoming Little Parwich in Ashbourne, at the Horns, the Jewitts provide familiar friendly faces for those of us visiting the big city. An old Ashbourne pub on Victoria Square (known locally as the Butchery), it is at the bottom of the market place, and has over the years been extended into neighbouring shops.

They have been running it for some months now, with Richard heading up the Restaurant and son Cameron the Bar. Having gone there with Brian F for Sunday lunch, I thought I should add it to our Out and About series. The menu is traditional good cooking, with main meals served in generous helpings. (more…)

We have had several comments on the potholes appearing in Smithy Lane as it approaches Townhead Green, at the edge of the village. A lot of water runs down the Dale road and the Hilltop road, and also there seems to be a collapsed drain in the middle of the road adding to the water on the road. There is the perennial problem of ice here in winter on a blind bend, but the recent wet weather has meant a significant deterioration in the road surface. There is a danger now that drivers will be worrying about avoiding the potholes and not concentrating on whether anyone else is coming the other way.  We have emailed this information to the County Council (http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/transport_roads/).

However, what are your thoughts?

Of buses and beer.

While researching bus routes for a forthcoming “Public Transport” section on this site, I made an interesting and useful discovery, which I thought was worth sharing with fellow pub-goers and reluctant drivers.

For anyone who enjoys a lunchtime pint (or three), and who fancies a change of scenery, but who doesn’t relish the thought of having to drive there and back (particularly the latter), it turns out that we have a few bus-based options at our disposal.

Fancy a trip to The Gate or The Miners Arms at Brassington? If so, then a bus leaves Parwich at 12:14 daily (except Sundays), arriving at Brassington church at 12:25. The return journey departs from the church at 13:47, arriving back at Parwich at 13:58.

Alternatively, how about spending a leisurely lunchtime at the Bentley Brook? Catch a bus from Parwich at 11:53, arriving at 12:04. Leave the Bentley Brook at 14:12, and arrive back at 14:19. Again, buses are daily except for Sundays.

(OK, so that’s quite a long lunch break – but it also gives you time to pop over the road to the Leatherbritches Nursery, or to wander down to the Coach and Horses at Fenny Bentley.)

Full bus timetable information will be appearing on this site over the next few days… if I can stay out of the pub long enough.

Pilates for life

I have just been onto Derbyshire County Council again, with regard to the not so ‘temporary’ traffic lights. I have spoken to David Nicholson (01629 580000 extn 7685) and the lights will be present for at least another 12 months minimum. Apparently a new wall has to be built, but so that it is not undermined by the river, (“a unique problem in Derbyshire”) then the barrier is added to comply with current standards. Their design teams are looking at the problem and the cost will be in excess of £300,000 (cynically- is this the real problem). I did suggest that maybe the problem wasn’t unique in the country & do their designers contact other authoritities to share information & ideas? The reply was “No”.

The reason that the lights do not always work is because according to DCC someone is regularly tampering with them!

This blog can also be found with the comments in the blog below, but I felt this information was important enough to stand alone.

Temporary Traffic Lights!

Can anyone help?

How long have the temporary traffic lights been on the B5056, just past Bradbourne Mill. I am sure they must have been up at least 6 months, any ideas on how we can get the work moving? Also have you noticed how much the road has slipped returning from Ashbourne just past The Bentley Brook, it must be a couple of inches (5 cms) and they only patched that again recently.

(update 3/4/08 – I have reported it to DCC – they have to report back – may take several weeks just for this to happen – see comments below for more details)

The Annual Open Meeting is at 7pm Thursday 3rd of April in the Memorial Hall. Come along! Although it is possible for parishioners to attend the ordinary Parish Council meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of each month, this is the one time in the year for local groups and villagers in general to get together and share information with the Parish Council and each other. Also it is your chance to meet your local parish councillors, as well as the district and county councilors representing us. PC Cooper, the Police Constable responsible for our area, also hopes to attend.
