Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #9

Greetings Possums,

Well the Xmas juggernaut is well underway and gathering momentum as we speak. It will soon be time to hang your stockings up or is it tights these days? Did you know that the Xmas cracker was invented by Tom Smith in 1846. The origin of his idea was French bon bons which contained a poem and were given as love tokens. Tom was sat by the fire one evening thinking how to make them more exciting, when a flaming log emitted a loud bang, giving Tom the idea for a snap in his crackers, the rest is history.

The Queen & Prince Philip were so impressed by a recent visit to a motor home manufacturers that they have ordered one to enable them to sneak ‘awf’ now and again for an incognito break. The motor home in question will bear the royal coat of arms. Staff will include a chauffeur, chef, private secretary, butler and housekeeping staff. It will boast a guest room in case any other royals fancy roughing it on holiday. A mini version will be towed behind for the corgis. Unfortunately there is no helipad provided on the roof for Prince Andrew. Look out for Pippa’s must have guide to motor home entertaining in bad bookstores soon.

Our ‘Weatherman in the Village’ says:

Winter is definitely here, and the past week has been colder than average. After today’s brief spell of wet and windy, during the week ahead it looks like being a lot drier than recently, but the cold weather will continue with hard night frosts forecast through the week (gritters – be prepared!).

Peace & Beauty

It sometimes takes a fresh eye to provide a reminder of the loveliness that surrounds us here in the Peak District. We are very grateful to Anthony who has sent us this moving video featuring scenes from the area, accompanied by some well chosen music by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

We recommend you put the video on full screen by clicking the symbol in the bottom right of the video box below and sit back and enjoy a musical and visual treat.

The video contains a scene taken in Alsop-en-le-Dale where Anthony has recently moved. You can find more of Anthony’s work on his YouTube channel using the link below. Anthony has largely used the music of English composers such as Gerald Finzi, Vaughan Williams and Michael Tippett. The Peak District featuring prominently as slide images.

East Midlands Ambulance Service launched a consultation about the future of the ambulance service in our region in September. Part of the proposals they are consulting on involves the creation of a smaller number of main hub ambulance stations, where staff start and finish their work, and from where they travel to local community facilities to await emergency calls. Rather than being dedicated ambulance stations these community facilities will be shared with other services such as the Police. To achieve this a number of the smaller dedicated ambulance stations will be closed, including the Ashbourne Ambulance Station (see the Ashbourne News Telegraph website for more information).

There is concern that this may result in reduced response time in rural areas such as in our villages. Where will our nearest community base be, and what will happen while ambulances are traveling back and forwards from their hubs in Derby or Chesterfield? The Ambulance Service argue that reducing the cost of maintaining these buildings, not always now in the best locations, will release funds for better direct patient services. The consultation still has another week to run (closing date Monday 17th December) so click here if you want to have you say directly on the East Midlands Ambulance Service website.

Alternatively for those opposed to the closure of the Ashbourne Ambulance Station, you can sign a petition at the Sycamore registering your concern.

pub is the hub

Janet and Steve were in London this week (don’t ask Steve about his shirt) for the ‘10 Years On‘ celebrations of Pub is the Hub, an organisation promoting rural pubs initiated by HRH the Prince of Wales. They were very happy to receive recognition at these celebrations for the Sycamore’s role in the local community.

WARNING – Road conditions

Thank you to Graham for this:

Roads this morning:

The Dale road very treacherous and probably not a sensible option in 2WD although it was probably more tricky going down than up – I  passed one car that had skidded off and been abandoned – just checked there was nobody still in it as the air bags had obviously gone off.

Lower part of the A515 from Mount Pleasant to K&H was dangerous, especially on the hills – compacted slush which had iced over- didn’t look like it had been gritted. North of there through Lean Low was fine – this had been gritted.

Take care on high routes.

On Friday 14th December from 10.30am the Church will be decorated ready for Christmas. Most of the windows will be dressed by those who regularly do them, but there is plenty more to do.

We hope that there will be plenty of volunteers, you don’t have to be a flower arranger, but just willing to join in.

Tea, coffee and cakes will be available all morning so why not just pop in and see what we are doing and have a cuppa – everyone is welcome.

Other ways you can help

  • Donate foliage from your garden, (especially anything that is variegated, yellow, with berries, seed heads, cones etc) – either pop them into the Church on the Thursday or Friday morning or give one of us a ring and we’ll come round and cut it for you.
  • Would you like to sponsor some flowers – as a dedication, in memorium (or as a memorial) or just because it is Christmas.
  • Any baubles that you are happy to donate.

Please do pop in, for a drink, to have a look, to decorate or to help clear up.

Glynis D – 561 or glynisdrummond@gmail.com

We have received the following message from Carl:

As you may or may not be aware we are currently redecorating the Legion and as part of this I would like to seek out any photos that people may have, that have been taken in the Legion over the years (inside or outside). If you would be happy to donate them or pass them to me to be to be copied, I can assure you they will be well looked after.

The plan is to display them (in a specifically designed frame and cover) in the club on a permanent basis. I do have some already showing the Mummers play in the 80s and some of the Wakes BBQs. There have been so many characters and events over the years in the Club I think it would be nice to remember them this way.

If you have any photos please feel free to call in the Club (photo’s in a marked envelope) or call in and see me at Orchard View – it would be useful to discuss the photos with you to establish who is on them and when they were taken etc.. I look forward to seeing what photos are out there!!!

The redecorating will be coming to an end at the end of this week, in time for the Fezziwigs Christmas Fayre on Sunday 9th Dec, which I hope you will be able to attend. Thank you for all your patience over the last 3 weeks whilst we have had dust sheets and paint tins everywhere.

Chairman of Parwich Royal British Legion Club

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #8

Thank you to Paul for his latest news ’round-up’:

Hello Possums, Have you opened the first windows of your advent calendars yet and scoffed the little treats inside ?, An arctic cold snap is forecast possibly heralding the coldest winter for a 100 years, it may be worth a wee flutter on it being a white Christmas. Did you know that originally good old St Nicholas, the patron saint of Toys-R ‘Us, was attired in green, that is until Coca Cola marketing got hold of him and dressed him in red.

Whilst on the Xmas theme at the recent Bavarian market in Birmingham more than a few eye brows were raised as the carousel begin to merrily rotate to the theme from the “Dambusters “. The large contingent of German stallholders took no offence and laughed it off. A spokesman from Birmingham City Council said “we have no control over the music and this was a pure coincidence, a one-off you might say“. Next came the themes from “The Great Escape”, “The Battle Of Britain”, “The Heroes Of Telemark “, “Kelly’s Heroes” and “Colonel Bogey”. One German trader asked an English fish monger what was the large fish on his counter, some wise guy shouted “don’t tell him Pike “. “They don’t like it up e’m you know “.  (more…)

Our ‘Weatherman in the Village’ says:

Well we got our colder snap at the end of this week as I forecasted last weekend. On my drive to work on Thursday morning there was no sign of any gritted roads – not even the A515, and sure enough, the Radio Derby travel reports were full of cars in ditches and general mayhem on the roads. Now I guess there are two sides to every issue, but at this time of year when there isn’t a build up of salt on the road surface from a winter of gritting, I really don’t understand why it takes so long to get the roads treated when even an amateur meteorologist can forecast a cold snap three days in advance. It’s a really important issue because people’s lives are put in real danger. So if anyone in the council road gritting department is reading this, it would be interesting to know why the gritting is apparently so tardy early in the winter season when it’s really needed most?

OK soapbox removed. On to this week’s outlook…… (more…)

It was Saturday.  The sun was out. The ice had melted. All systems were go! Miguel & Roberto – two top Parwich cyclists – decided to pedal over to Hartington.

Having huffed and puffed their way to the village, they were sorely in need of coffee and calories! Both were bowled over by the fantastic Hartington Village Stores which has had new owners since last January.

20121201_145335_1024x768

The shop is well stocked, offering a meat/deli counter, local specialities, puddings and drinks as well as normal everyday groceries. Laura and Rob were very friendly, keeping the Parwich Cycling Team up to speed with the England/All Blacks score and providing fantastic freshly ground coffee.

The stores was built in 1836 and still retains the feel of an old fashioned grocers. Apparently it survived being blown up by a leaking gunpowder barrel which lifted the roof as high as the top of the church!

20121201_145936_1024x768

Refuelled with a fine huntsman’s pie, Miguel and Roberto found the chug back up to Parwich almost easy!
