Artists to Africa

Artists to Africa

The arrivals and departures of summer migrants, such as Swallow, House Martin and Cuckoo, hint at the changing seasons and deliver a sense of connection with distant lands. In January 2014, a team of four SWLA artists accompanied the British Trust of Ornithology’s Head of International Research on a trip to Senegal. By bringing artists and scientists together we set out to raise the profile around some of the issues facing our African migrants.

Esther will be showing some of her Senegal fieldwork in the Memorial Hall on the 22nd and 23rd of November 10am – 4pm along with some local work.

Welcome to Parwich to Lynn C and family, it is always good to have new contributors:

My son and his girlfriend were climbing at Cheedale (Wye Valley) yesterday and found a young buzzard with a broken wing at the base of the cliff. With only a blue IKEA bag to capture and carry the buzzard, they beat a hasty retreat back to McMurtry & Harding in Ashbourne. We thought people may like to see a close up shot of the bird. We are waiting to hear how the buzzard recovers.

Thank you Debbie W for responding to our call for more photographs, though these are perhaps a little outside our area. However in August we allow some latitude (some 72 degrees in this case):

Although I’m no John F-S or David G, thought people might enjoy the attached. I write this while on holiday here at my dad’s house in upstate New York (Canandaigua, Finger Lakes region).

I found a nest on his property while picking wild blackberries. Field research means I now know it is a bird called an American Goldfinch? I decided to take one photo a day, at the same time each day (10:00 am) and gave myself approximately 1 to 2 minutes to get the shot to ensure as little disturbance as possible to the nest and contents. I’m being watched closely by ‘mom’ who flies to a near by tree and watch – and scold me rather loudly – during each photo ‘session’.

The story so far…

Three more photographs added 22nd August 2014, and a further three photos added 23rd Aug:

Yesterday all was quiet on the nest front, everyone was asleep. Today they were awake and hungry! It is really interesting to note that some birds are now opening their eyes, and also the feathers are beginning to come in for their wings. I counted five little beaks – so far all eggs are still accounted for.

Another photo added 25th Aug:

Things to do in August?

After tonight’s Parwich Panoramic Five things usually go quiet on the Blog until the start of the School term and Annual Flower & Vegetable Show in early September, though this year we do have the Local Authority sponsored Family Games events. However if you have any suggestions or photographs of things to do or places to go in August do email them to parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we can share them on the Blog.

Here are a few photographs I have taken yesterday and today at Arbor Low, Robin Hood’s Stride and Hobhurst Cave in Deepdale. These are on my list of places to take visitors, so, as I now have visited them quite often, I am looking forward to getting ideas of new places to add to the list.

PRIVATE ESTATE’S EXQUISITE 4 ACRE GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY

Specialist Plant Fair and Open Gardens

Culland Hall, Culland, Ashbourne, Derbyshire DE6 3BW

SUNDAY 8th JUNE 2014, 11am – 4pm

Tucked away down a winding Derbyshire lane lies Culland Hall and its’ exquisite 4 acre gardens. Nurtured over the past twenty years by owner Lucy Thompson, this gem of a garden is open just one day each year in aid of local charity Mid Derbyshire Association for Mobile Physiotherapy – a charity close to Lucy’s heart.

It is pretty rare to find a garden offering quite so much – over 100 varieties of roses (look out for Konigin von Danemark), a Victorian walled kitchen garden, woodland walk, colour-themed borders inspired by Sissinghurst, amongst others, and a huge selection of rare and specialist plants. All this sits majestically, surrounded by lake and parkland, under Culland’s beady-eyed flock of Lleyn and Jacob ewes.

Win some, lose some

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

It was a pity that more people did not go to the Parish Meeting. Perhaps we will have to drag possible members kicking and screaming to the green. Anyway one unexpected good win and one not so unsurprising loss.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Away – Youlgrave – 20 May

We have not played on this green for many years; they have been playing in the top division in the league. Some years ago they also put what can best be described as a ‘camels hump’ in the green. To say you need a sat nav to play on there is an understatement. The game did not start well with Dawn and Dot 11 -3 down in just a few ends. However, o ye of little faith, they came back and finished winners by 21 – 15. We won two of the other three games and came out on top by 78 – 60. Considering the trepidation with we were approaching the match, what a result. Hopefully we can start climbing up the league a bit.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 27 May – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Away – Chatsworth A – 22 May 2014

We have been doing quite well in this league, winning a few and losing a few. This week was ‘losing a few’. They are top of the league and showed us no mercy. We lost two of the three doubles games, but Harry B and Ian J played really well to win 21 – 13. Despite this however, we were behind 55 – 38.
We shared the six singles three apiece with Edith providing us with a great 15 – 5 win. The final outcome was a win to Chatsworth 121 – 105. At least the rain held off!!

  • Next match – Home – Lafarge – 29 May – 1.45pm

We have the first of our ‘friendly’ games this Sunday. Ashourne Park are entertaining us. Should be good.

Even though it’s a Bank Holiday we will be on the green at around 7 o’clock on Monday. Come and have a try I dare you!!

John B.

I guess it is telling that, although I reported the previous elections here at parwich.org, in starting to draft this post I could not remember how many Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are sent from the East Midlands, nor the names of any of them. So here is a recap of the sitting MEPs and the PR method used to elect them, as well as the candidates for the up coming May 22nd election.

Peter T

Our sitting MEPs are:

We vote as part of the East Midlands region, which returns five MEPs by closed party list proportional representation. Each party submits a list of up to five candidates indicating their order of preference. Voters then choose political parties, rather than individual candidates. Voters indicate a single preference and parties are allocated seats on a quota system in relation to the proportion of the votes they receive (see About My Vote). A party’s first seat goes to the first candidate on their list, a second seat to their second candidate and so on.

Four of the sitting MEPs are standing again, including Roger Helmer, who in 2012 defected from the Conservatives to UKIP. Here are the parties’ candidate lists, together with links to their websites, where we have been able to identify them:   (more…)

Horticultural Trips

Yesterday 25 members of the PDHS visited two inspiring gardens near Northwich in Cheshire.

Thank you Glynis for this report:

The morning was spent at Bluebell Cottage Garden, tucked away over a narrow canal bridge in the heart of the countryside which presented the coach driver with his first challenge of the day. The island beds contained many unusual perennials some of which were available to tempt us in the attached nursery.

We then continued just a few miles down the road to Stonyford Cottage Garden and nursery. Here we enjoyed a tasty lunch, whilst the rain came down. Luckily there was a break in the showers and we could explore the beautiful, tranquil garden set around a series of pools. The candelabra primulas were fantastic.

The next trip is on Wednesday 16th July, combines a visit to Winterbourne Gardens in the morning. This is one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa, with a beautiful walled garden, colour themed borders, glasshouses, rock garden and stream side planting. We will then go on to the nearby Birmingham Botanic garden for the afternoon, which contains plants from all corners of the world, arranged in glasshouses, herbaceous borders, rockeries etc, there is something for everyone!

The price (includes coach fare and entry to both gardens):
– members £18. (£16 concessions),
– non members £22 ( £20 concessions)

The coach will leave Parwich at 9.15 am, and return at approx 6 pm. To book a place please contact Glynis on 390561, £5 deposit required, full amount payable by 8 July.
