Driveway Alarms – discount price

Residents and business owners in the Derbyshire Dales are being offered discounted driveway alarms to help deter thieves.

The wireless alarms are being made available at police stations in the district. They usually cost between £30 and £35 but are being sold at £20 to dales residents thanks to a subsidy from the Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership.

The alarms are being promoted by the Safety Partnership – which is led by Derbyshire Dales District Council and the police.

Dales businessman Iain Wakefield, of Alkmonton, said: “As our vehicles are parked out in the open at the end of a long drive, John Bointon from the Safer Neighbourhood policing team suggested we install one of these battery-operated infrared driveway alarms to monitor any unauthorised access onto our property.

“When triggered, the monitor wirelessly activates a portable alarm that can be carried anywhere in the house up to a maximum of 90 metres away. No wiring was necessary and all the outdoor parts are fully waterproof.” (more…)

Derbyshire Constabulary has announced changes to services at 17 police enquiry offices across the county that will take effect from Monday, June 18.

In January, the force proposed changes to the front counter service at stations across Derbyshire to best meet demand including closures at under-used locations and altered opening hours at others.

Following reductions in police budgets announced in October 2010 the force was left with a budget deficit of £13m by the end of 2012/13 and a predicted total of £24m by 2014/15.

The review found that several of the smaller offices received a limited number of visitors each week. The force decided to alter the opening hours of some enquiry offices, while nine of the 25 are being closed to the public.  The changes are expected to result in savings of nearly half a million pounds year on year.

Police officers will still be present at the stations, but residents wishing to contact the force while the enquiry office is closed are advised to call 101 or 999 in an emergency. By calling 101, residents can access many services offered by the constabulary, including making a scheduled appointment with an officer.

Ashbourne enquiry office will be open from 10am to 2pm Monday to Friday.

Dodgy ATM’s

Police are advising people to be extra vigilant after suspicious devices have been placed on two ATM’s (cash machines).

Between 6.30pm and 6.45pm on Tuesday 14th February, a device was placed on the ATM at a store at Granby Croft, Granby Road, Bakewell. While the person reporting this incident went inside the store to alert staff, the device was removed by the offender/s. Incident no: 509 of 14.2.12.

Just before 6.30pm on Wednesday 15th February, three men were seen acting suspiciously at a bank ATM, The Quadrant, Buxton. One of the men had placed a plastic object over the slot on the machine and then removed it when disturbed by a customer. Description: three men of Eastern European appearance, about 6ft tall, aged 40-50 years, well dressed. They headed towards the alley at the side of Pizza Express. Incident no: 573 of 15.2.12.

Crime prevention advice:

• Members of staff at premises with cash machines should check ATM’s regularly.

Shoppers in the Derbyshire Dales can get their hands on free purse chains to help keep them safe during the run up to Christmas.

The police and Derbyshire Dales District Council have joined forces to provide the chains as part of a bid to prevent purse thefts in Bakewell, Ashbourne and Matlock.

They can be used to attach the purse to a zip inside a handbag, to make it more difficult for the purse to be stolen and increase the chances of alerting the shopper, who might feel the purse being ‘tugged’.  It can be easy to become distracted while you are out and about browsing the shops but we would always urge people to make sure that they keep their handbags zipped up and their purse out of sight.

In Ashbourne people can get hold of the chains by calling at the Ashbourne News Telegraph office on Market Place or from Ashbourne police station, Compton Road.

Tips for safer shopping include: (more…)

Residents in Ashbourne and the surrounding villages are being advised to make sure they use grit fairly and sensibly during the winter months. It is after reports that during the cold spell last year, some residents had taken grit from roadside bins for use on their own driveways.

PCSO Kate Cleveley of the Tissington Area Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It was disappointing to hear that last year a few individuals took grit that is provided to keep road users and pedestrians safe on the highways, and used it on their own personal property.

“Grit bins are provided by the council in various locations, usually in villages or on untreated roads, so that residents and businesses can keep roads or pavements free from snow and ice.

“These grit bins must be used to clear public pavements and roads only and are not for use on private property.”

Police have advised that taking grit from the public bins for use on private property can be classed as theft.

PCSO Cleveley added: “Not only would you risk prosecution if you are found to be taking grit from public bins for domestic use, but you could also be putting other people’s safety at risk.  Homeowners have a responsibility to buy their own supplies of salt to keep their driveways or pathways clear. Please use public salt supplies responsibly.”

You can report problems with grit bins to Derbyshire County Council on 08456 058 058.

Today Derbyshire police launched a new telephone number which will make it easier for people to get in touch with the force about issues that do not need an emergency response. So ring 101 instead of 0345 123 33 33, the old non-emergency number.

It is part of a national drive to make it easier for people to contact police to report crime and disorder, with all forces using the number by the end of this year.

While 999 is a well recognised number to report emergencies, that is when a crime is happening, when someone suspected of a crime is nearby or where someone is injured, being threatened or in danger.
most people couldn’t remember the non emergency number.

By calling 101, you will be able to speak to the police force control room of your local police service. Calls from landlines and mobile networks cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long you are on the phone.

You should use 101 to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. For example:
– if your car has been stolen;
– if your property has been damaged;
– where you suspect drug use or dealing;
– if you want to report a minor traffic collision;
– if you want to give the police information about crime in your area;
– if you want to speak to your local officers; or
– general enquiries.

Deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired callers can access the service via textphone on 18001 101.

It is hoped that 101 will reduce the number of inappropriate 999 calls, allowing the force to respond to emergencies more effectively. Between April 1 and September 30, Derbyshire police answered 462,423 calls. Of these, 70,520 were emergency calls and 391,903 were non-emergency calls.

School buses & vehicle checks

School buses checked for safety in Ashbourne.

A number of school buses in Ashbourne have been checked as part of a police and partnership road safety operation. Operation Safedrive took place on Friday, September 23 and a team of police officers, PCSOs and officers from CREST (Casualty Reduction and Enforcement Support Team), VOSA (Vehicle Operator Services Agency) and Derbyshire County Council started the day at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. The team examined over 15 buses and coaches to check the condition and safety of the vehicles bringing children to school. During the checks two buses were found with defects which needed to be fixed as soon as possible and one bus had to be towed back to the depot for immediate repairs after officers found two wheel nuts which had sheared off.

Vehicle Checks

They then moved on to Ashbourne Fire Station where the team were joined by the DVLA and a fire safety officer to carry out checks on passing vehicles. A mixture of warnings, notices and fixed penalty notices were issued to:
• 6 drivers for using their mobile phone while driving
• 3 drivers for having tyre defects
• 2 for number plate offences
• 1 driver for not being in proper control of the vehicle
• 1 for not having a valid MOT
• 28 drivers were stopped for not wearing a seatbelt;
these drivers  were also given advice and shown photographs taken by the fire service of cases where people a seatbelt.

In addition, VOSA issued:

• 5 immediate and 2 delayed prohibition notices,
these are given to drivers for defects on vehicles which seriously affect their roadworthiness. The owners then have to have their vehicle inspected at an MOT centre before they can legally drive on the public highway.

The DVLA also brought their camera car and a total of 3018 cars passed through, and seven were found not to have road tax.
