Olympics buzz inspires Dales Summer Street Games

With the London Olympics creating a buzz throughout the country, Derbyshire Dales District Council has re-launched a range of summer holiday sporting activities for local youngsters.

StreetGames, a Safer Communities through Sport project, offers ‘doorstep’ sport to young people, helping to increase youth participation in sport, prevent youth crime and create volunteering opportunities.

All sessions are funded externally at no cost to Derbyshire Dales Council Tax payers and StreetGames for local young people are being staged by fully qualified coaches weekly across the Dales.

Here’s the Summer 2012 Street Games programme:

  • Ashbourne (Clifton Road Multi Use Games Area) – Thursdays 5.00pm to 6.00pm
  • Matlock (Helicopter Park, Hurst Farm) – Tuesdays 6.00pm to 7.00pm (11+ years)
  • Middleton-by-Wirksworth (Village Hall and playing fields) Thursdays 7.00pm to 9pm (8+ years)
  • Tansley (Fete Field, Spout Lane) Wednesdays 4.00pm to 6.00pm (8+ years)
  • Wirksworth (Anthony Gell School Fields) – Fridays 7.00pm to 8.30pm (11+ years)

The early sessions offer multi sports and are open to all ages and abilities.  The later sessions are generally aimed at teenagers. (more…)

Hopefully this post is just academic and there will be no threats of flooding in the village.  It is important to watch the stream at its various choke points as these spots get very easily blocked with debris including broken branches and plastic.  Fortunately these areas were cleared in May by volunteers;  one section was almost totally blocked!

The Flood Protection Agency has just launched their new website, and with numerous flood warnings currently in force across the UK it aims to provide a lifeline to individuals and businesses looking for a single source of flood related information, latest flood warnings and a special helpline.

As well as guidance on how to protect a property, types of flooding and how to assess a flood risk, importantly the site recommends trusted, accredited suppliers of all types of flood protection products and specialists in flood risk assessment surveys. All FPA members comply with the association’s code of practice as a sound guarantee to customers of the highest standards of quality, integrity, safety and reliability. This means their flood protection products are quality assured and, where appropriate, are Kitemark certified as a symbol of trust. In particular, the site features two illustrations of a home and a commercial property – by hovering over water entry points, a list of product providers pops up with a link to members and how to contact them.

For more information, visit their website  or contact the FPA helpline on 033 33 23 8701.

So this week it is Friday 8th for the Green Bin and Saturday 9th for the Black Bin.  The collection may be anytime between 7am-4pm, because of the double Bank Holiday, so don’t despair if it hasn’t been collected by lunchtime.

Just remember whenever there is a Bank Holiday the bins are collected a day later.

Derbyshire County Council have asked us to publicise this event on Saturday 16th June.  Those donating items can enter a prize draw:

DONATE YOUR LARGE ELECTRICALS TO A GOOD CAUSE

Fed up with your fridge? Weary of your washing machine? Are you thinking of making a change?

If you are planning to replace any large, working household appliances then why not donate them to a good cause.

Instead of sending good quality items to be recycled, give them to your local furniture reuse project who will give them a new lease of life.

Derbyshire County Council is teaming up with Ashbourne’s Encore Reuse Furniture Project to hold a household electricals collection event on Saturday June 16 from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

They are encouraging people to bring along their old but working white goods like washing machines, fridges, freezers and microwaves.

They also would welcome any smaller, reusable electrical items such as hairdryers, CD players and laptops. (more…)

Yesterday’s power cut

As most of our readers will already know, over 200 households in Parwich, i.e. the majority of the village, experienced a power cut between roughly 8:30 AM and 21:40 PM yesterday (Sunday April 29th). We were told that this was due to a fallen tree, that had blown over during Sunday morning’s storms.

If you have any comments to make about the episode, please leave them below. For instance, were you satisfied with the way that the situation was handled by the power company? And how did you spend your Sunday? Was it a nightmare experience, or did you find ways of making it fun?

An article in yesterday’s Ashbourne News Telegraph indicated that Derbyshire County Council are considering turning off street lights in villages between midnight and 5-30am.

The first local village that could be effected is Brassingington that may see its streetlights off through the night as early as July this year.  At present the plans for Parwich involve a ‘risk assessment’ to be undertaken in December of this year, followed by ‘community engagement’ in March 2013, with ‘installation’ (i.e. switching off) in May 2013.  for more information see www.derbyshire.gov.uk/streetlights .

We have received the following note of endorsement from Mike H:
I would like to let you know about an excellent experience I have just had with a new Parwich-based business called Generations Back Ltd.
Many people in the village know that Ian Pitts is very knowledgeable in the fields of local history and archaeology. I was interested to discover that Ian is also an expert at genealogy. For a long time, I had had it in mind to do some research into my own family tree but did not really have the know-how to undertake the exercise nor did I have the time to learn how to approach family history research. When Ian’s business was advertised on the parwich.org for the first time, I took the opportunity to make use of Ian’s expertise.
Ian approached the exercise in the most professional way. He started by discussing the project with me to understand my primary areas of interest in our family history. Ian then used a wide range of sources to produce a comprehensive report, providing information on my family as far back as 6 generations. He very thoroughly cross-checked the facts to ensure the accuracy of the information. That was only the beginning however; he was also able to find 19th century newspaper articles about family members, details from old wills, military records (e.g. Ian found dispatches from the Boer War that mentioned a family member) and bills of passage from ocean liners for ancestors that had emigrated to the USA.
Ian’s well structured and nicely presented report unearthed information about our family that would have been almost impossible for me to uncover myself.
If you were interested in finding out more about your family history and wished to engage a professional and knowledgeable expert to undertake some research, I can highly recommend Generations Back.

Sent in as a comment from Saskia, but too good not to have it as a post.

So, let me get this straight:
Collections will be as follows:
Week 1:
Monday: Green – all kitchen waste, including egg shells (see also Sunday’s collection), but no chicken bones or olive stones; garden waste: only clippings from the following: Celastraceae, Malvaceae and Rosaceae (see also Thursday’s collection); Black: plastics, but only rigid (see below for rigidity testing *), small broken household items with dimensions not exceeding 37 x 45 x 12 cm, ink cartridges, but not HP colour.

Tuesday: Blue – plastics, only non-rigid * (see below); glass, but no broken beer or white/red wine glasses (see additional late-Friday night collection); paper, including newspapers but not the Sunday Mirror.

Wednesday: I can’t quite remember: is it babies and toddlers? But which bin was it? I’m not sure whether I could have misunderstood the instructions though.

Thursday: Green – all green waste but NOT from Celastraceae, Malvaceae and Rosaceae. Also: kitchen waste, but only chicken bones and olive stones (see also Monday’s collection).

Friday: Blue: all recyclables, but no plastics (see Monday and Tuesday). No cricket bats.

Residents in Ashbourne and the surrounding villages are being advised to make sure they use grit fairly and sensibly during the winter months. It is after reports that during the cold spell last year, some residents had taken grit from roadside bins for use on their own driveways.

PCSO Kate Cleveley of the Tissington Area Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It was disappointing to hear that last year a few individuals took grit that is provided to keep road users and pedestrians safe on the highways, and used it on their own personal property.

“Grit bins are provided by the council in various locations, usually in villages or on untreated roads, so that residents and businesses can keep roads or pavements free from snow and ice.

“These grit bins must be used to clear public pavements and roads only and are not for use on private property.”

Police have advised that taking grit from the public bins for use on private property can be classed as theft.

PCSO Cleveley added: “Not only would you risk prosecution if you are found to be taking grit from public bins for domestic use, but you could also be putting other people’s safety at risk.  Homeowners have a responsibility to buy their own supplies of salt to keep their driveways or pathways clear. Please use public salt supplies responsibly.”

You can report problems with grit bins to Derbyshire County Council on 08456 058 058.

Digital Switchover – next Wednesday!!!

Thank you to Martin for sending in a reminder about the switchover to Digital TV next Wednesday, 17th August.

This means in order to watch TV from this date you would need either:

  • A Freeview set top box (they start from £20) and possibly a new aerial + your old telly
  • Or a TV with Freeview built in
  • Or a satellite dish + a Sky Freesat box or Skybox (£150+, or a subscription) + your old telly.

To receive High Definition (HD) TV, you would need a TV that is HD ready + a HD set top box.

For further information click on

A Freeview aerial can be fitted for a cost of £80 from Edge aerials (I can recommend them) for £80.   One can try the old analogue aerials first to see if they will pick up Freeview broadcasts from our relay transmitter.  Martin C.
