Take a careful look at these two photos. Although they may look identical at first, there are in fact ten differences between the top photo and the bottom photo.

How many can you spot? We particularly welcome answers in the comments box from our younger readers.

HINT: Try clicking each photo to enlarge it. Each photo will then open in a new window. This might make the differences a little easier to spot!

2010 saw the 55th Dovedale Dash and although chilly and a little soggy underfoot, it was a wonderfully sunny day.  Parwich and Alsop were well represented, fielding 21 runners (including 5 friends) out of 1500 runners.  Apologies that the photos are not as sharp as they could be, but the runners were just too fast and sorry if I have missed anyone out.

In the children’s race, Bethany was the first girl in the Under 10’s and Emily the first girl in the Under 8’s and Ben was one of the younger runners.

In the main race, Clive R, veteran, led the Parwich group in, followed by Sue P, Jacob (only 9) and then Graham J.  Well done to the rest – Izzy, Seth, Nia, Thayer, Lexie, Reuben, Josh, Brian G, Jamie D, Mark W and the Linnell’s friends.

Next Year’s run is on Sunday 6th November!

Parwich were represented by 4 runners in the Ashbourne half marathon and fun run.  Bertie L the 6th boy to finish the fun run, just ahead of Izzy P who was the third girl to finish.

In the half marathon Sue P was only a few minutes ahead of Graham J, he was running his first half marathon and has never run more than 10 miles.  Both runners finished in less that 1 hour 50 minutes, on what is considered a tough course, going up a number of hills near Thorpe and Blore before finishing back at the rugby ground.

Well done to everyone – a great morning.

Pilates for the young!

We have received the following message from Rebecca:

Apologies to the existing Pilates exercisers who are young in mind if not in body, but there is interest from some of the younger residents in the village in setting up their own session.

A free taster class will be held on Wednesday 29th September from 7.30 – 8.30pm.

Minimum age: 11 years.
Maximum age: could be controversial – I feel I’m on dangerous ground here!

If you are interested, please spread the word amongst yourselves, on Facebook etc, as the class will need to be large enough to be viable.

Children can try being a lead miner, meet characters from the past, and enjoy things that go boom, bang or squelch at a free archaeological family fun day at the 270-year-old Magpie Mine, Sheldon, on Saturday July 31, 10.30am-3pm.

Peak District National Park rangers and the Peak District Mines Historical Society are staging “Magpie Mayhem,” with activities for adults and children alike.

The event is part of the Festival of British Archaeology and National Parks Week, and will include a guided tour of the site by the National Park’s senior survey archaeologist, John Barnatt.

The Peak District Mines Historical Society, which owns and manages Magpie Mine, will display scale models and genuine mining artefacts to help explain the archaeology and will talk about their work on site.

National Park area ranger Lynn Burrow said: “Magpie Mine has a really colourful history, including conflict and tragedy in the 1830s as rival groups of miners tried to smoke each other out.  We’ll be helping families explore their local history with an interactive discovery trail, and children can become a lead miner, meet historical characters, make “bradder” hats and enjoy games and activities. Families can bring a picnic and make a day of it.”

No need to book, just turn up on the day.  Magpie Mine is a mile or so from Monyash, so about 20 minutes from Parwich.

Bikes – Be Safe

Another local resident has asked us to again to remind parents to talk to their children about road safety on their bikes, especially with the weather improving and half term almost upon us.  One of the numerous danger spots seems to be children racing out of Parsons Croft and straight across the road behind Orchard View, without looking.   We are so lucky that the children have such fun out and about, but their safety is paramount.

Last year Parwich First Responders organised training for all interested parties in how to care for children in life-threatening situations.  They are keen to organise more such training if there is sufficient interest:

Do you want another visit by ALAN GIBSON, CONSULTANT NEONATOLOGIST (children’s doctor in charge of new born baby unit) of Sheffield Hospitals?

It is now a year since Alan and his team came to the village to teach us about how to care for infants and children that we found in a life-threatening situation, e.g. unconsciousness, fits, drowning, electrocution, head injury.

We have recently been in touch with him and he would very much like to visit our village again. He is willing to come with his team, for as long as we wish, whenever we wish and to teach whatever we wish! So long as we can organize some dates for him.

So this note is just to let you know of his offer.

  • Now there are so many new children in the village, perhaps there could be some training for those who have not been to his training before?
  • Also perhaps some teaching for the partners of those who came last time?
  • Maybe there are some people who could not make our last date?
  • And of course there are those of us who may have attended last time but would like a refresher session?

As before he is happy to teach anyone – those with direct care of children, those who come across children in their working lives, and of course grandparents etc., who may take care of children.

Could you please contact us and let us know if you are interested, and which group you fit into. When we know what you want we will go back to Alan and try to arrange some suitable dates.

Take care.

halloweenHalloween in Parwich is usually very successful, with the youngsters and their parents normally only calling on homes where they are known.  The children make a real effort in their dressing up and the atmosphere is fun and non-threatening. If you are happy to have callers but you are not normally visited please put a lantern or somthing else very obvious in your window.

Remember to get those sweets ready!

Probably nothing

Yesterday afternoon (Friday 24th July) a man in a car stopped near the Memorial Hall to ask an eight year old girl directions to another village. The chances are this was just what it appears to be, someone asking for directions, however the mother, when the child told her about it, was left with an uneasy feeling. Consequently she asked us to put this post on the Blog.

One of the things we value in our community is a sense of security, and the freedom our children have. Nevertheless, it is also important not to be too complacent.

Thank you to our roving reporter for the evening Nia:

It all started well, with Dennis, missing his usual side kick – Brian- getting the races off to a flying start at bang on 6.30pm. Children were clutching their brown envelopes of money and sucking on revolting looking purple chews with more additives in them than a bag of candy floss from the fair, by the time the roving reporter made it down to the sports ground…..

The birth explosion in Parwich around the millennium meant the tape holders had to work doubly hard as heats had to be run before the finalists could be decided. The ‘smarter’ children quickly realised they needed to ensure they got in the right heat in order to guarantee a place in the final. For the boys that meant avoiding Jack G. and Jacob B. and the girls had to avoid Bethany F. These 3 youngsters were obviously under strict instructions to bring home to the dosh as they were flying down the home straight into 1st place in every race they entered.(unless it was against each other of course….) A team of about 20 boys and girls went to a QEGs rounders tournament last night in the blazing hot sunshine.  The highlights were beating Longford 7:3 and getting through to the quarter finals where sadly we were knocked out by Clifton.  Still, the kids clobbered the ball hard a few times, made a few great catches, ran like the wind and had a blast. Visitors please note that the B5056 is closed just north of the Bentley Brook Inn, where it forks from the A515.

If you are coming from the north, then you can still access Parwich from the B5056.

If approaching from the south, you should stay on the A515 for another 4 miles or so, and then take the turning through Alsop-en-le-Dale.
