Instead you can stream the Church of England’s national service which this week celebrates those who have helped keep food on our plates during the pandemic with contributions from farmers, lorry drivers and supermarket workers. You’ll find it at https://www.churchofengland.org/more/media-centre/join-us-church-online/weekly-online-services/celebrating-forgotten-heroes-covid from 9am tomorrow.

Hopefully some of you have seen this and we are keen to do it in Parwich. The aim is to display Halloween items in your windows / around your gardens so we can do a hunt around the village. Once you have spotted one the child (or yourself!) is rewarded with a treat (that you have taken along with you) and then you go onto find the next one. We were thinking of having them on display from the Thursday – Sunday.
In addition to this David and Christine Goldstraw from Church Walk have very kindly agreed to open up their spooktacular garden on Halloween for the children to walk around and look at their display (arrows will mark which way to walk). Christine is happy to answer any questions people may have.
I look forward to seeing your spooky creations.

As our local churches re-open for services (with physical distancing and cleaning/hygiene arrangements in place), there are two opportunities tomorrow to gather.
At 1100 in Alsop we gather for a Harvest Service, celebrating the goodness of God around us. The congregation are invited to bring items for the Ashbourne Foodbank, particularly tinned meat, tinned fish and long-life milk which are most needed.
We gather between 1730 and 1800 tomorrow to say Evening Prayer together using words from the 1662 Prayer Book and hymns.
- 1730 bring your own tea/coffee & cake for a chat if you wish
- 1800 service starts
Contact Rev Carollyn on revcarollyn@peakfive.org or 664132 or Andrew C on andrew@colliefamily.plus.com or 390684 for info on how to join in via computer, tablet and phone (including landline) and accessing the words.
We hope to see and hear you.

At last week’s meeting of the Parish Council the lack of a clean up day in the village this year was discussed. It was decided that the Council should be able to hold a suitably risk assessed and distanced clean up day to address most of the usual tasks despite the coronavirus restrictions. This will probably involve a little more pre-planning of who might do what than usual – but hopefully also make the most of flexibility around volunteers and weather on the day too.
The main date chosen for this is Sunday 25th October. It may also be possible/appropriate for individual tasks to be carried out on other days.
If you have any thoughts about what you would like to see done, what you might like to do or how this activity might be organised please contact the Clerk, Andrew Martin on clerk@parwichparishcouncil.org.uk.
Final arrangements will be confirmed at the parish Council meeting on the 21st of October.

Derbyshire Dales District Council is urging residents to report areas in the district where litter and dog fouling are causing a problem under a new campaign – ‘Don’t be a tosser – bin it!’
After a summer where high volumes of litter were seen across the district, the council is supporting community groups and individuals who are picking up litter and helping to keep it clean. But it’s not just litter, dog fouling continues to be an issue.
“Although 9 out of 10 dog owners pick up dog mess after their pets, that still leaves a significant number who don’t,” said Councillor Chris Furness, Chairman of the Community & Environment Committee at the District Council.
“We’re encouraging residents to help us by putting litter and dog mess in the bin and reporting problem areas to us.”
Community Development Officer, Emma Mortimer added:
“With the information from residents we will target those areas with the worst problems by patrolling and talking to dog owners to encourage responsible behaviour. We will support groups and individuals who want to help reduce the problem in their community by providing pink chalk-based spray paint to highlight dog mess and put up signs.
“To help encourage dog owners to pick up after their pets we are providing dog-mess bag dispensers on our land where we know there is a problem.”
Residents can report a litter or dog fouling hot spot via an online form.

As its half term I was thinking if we did it from Thursday 29th October to Sunday 1st November it would give people ample of time to walk around and find them.
Any suggestions just let me know – lucywigley@googlemail.com . I can’t wait to see your spooky delights!!

Update for Bradbourne & Parwich Heating Oil Club
Despite sluggish oil demand; Brent Crude is up this week, passing $43 a barrel as a result of Saudi Arabia keeping its OPEC members in line by ensuring agreed production cuts are met. Delivery times between 7 and 10 working days.
Pre-Winter TIP: Over time water builds up at the bottom of the tank through condensation. To prevent this causing issues we recommend using a water scavenger which will absorb contaminated water in the tank. It is simple to use, just fix the cord to the tank and drop in the scavenger. Or if you would like to test for water you can purchase a Water Test Kit. For more information please visit The Club Store.
Rate: £0.2450 (pence per litre excluding vat [5% for Domestic use])

Thanks to Carl W for this warning
Please be aware there is a wasp nest in a hole in the ground approximately one third of the way up the sledging field/Cowes Close.
It’s on the right hand side quite close to the footpath.

Apologies, as we don’t normally publish personal opinion pieces on the blog, but here goes….
Tomorrow it’s time once again for the PDHS show. Usually the second major PDHS event, first Open Gardens then the Show, with summer sandwiched nicely between them. A chance to show off how kind the summer has been to our gardens, or how skillful we’ve been in mastering whatever the gods have thrown at us, after the early promise of open gardens. Sadly, as we all know, this year is a bit different. The cancellation of Open Gardens was a big blow to the PDHS and the village. You may have seen the note on the Show entry form “Prize money has been reduced to the loss of revenue from Open Gardens this year”. Open Gardens usually brings substantial revenue to the PDHS so this year they will be feeling the loss. But this doesn’t just affect the PDHS and their ability to run trips and events it affects the whole village. Over the years the PDHS have been extremely generous in sharing their funds with other organisations and groups in the village including this blog, so we will all be feeling the pinch. Speaking for the blog, we have annual costs for provision of web hosting, storage, etc which we would struggle to pay without the generous donations we receive from the PDHS.I’m sure other groups will be hit similarly.
So now it is our turn. Time to say thank you to the PDHS and give them our support, like they have supported us through the years, and make this the best show ever! Everyone with a garden, you have something growing you can enter in the show. Don’t worry if it wouldn’t win at Chelsea or Chatsworth, it’s just for fun and to support the PDHS, and you never know….
Then there’s the cookery section, we all fancy ourselves as the next Bake Off champion. Now’s your chance to shine and show off a little.
And for the kids, who can’t pick a jam jar full of flowers or take a picture of a tree?
So come on everyone it’s time to support the PDHS and thank them for what they’ve quietly done for the village over the years.

The next meeting of Parwich Parish Council will be held on Wednesday the 16th September 2020 at 7:30 pm.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak Parish Councils continue to be advised not to meet face to face unless this is the only way that they can conduct their business.
The meeting will therefore once again be conducted using Zoom. The agenda contains login details that can be used by members of the public to join the meeting.
There is also a telephone number which will enable you to listen to the meeting and speak when permitted.
If you have not used Zoom before you are strongly advised to download their app in advance. This will enable you set it up on your device and familiarise yourself with its operation.

It is with great sadness that Parwich Carnival and Recreation Committee have had to cancel this years bonfire night. Due to the current restrictions it is just not possible to do. Please can people refrain from adding any more items to the bonfire site.
Hopefully we will be back bigger and more spectacular in 2021!

It was a great turn out on Saturday, for the first Legion family bike ride for a while. After the 14 mile loop, riders (pictured here on The High Peak Trail near Longcliffe) met back at The Legion for refreshments and to feast on Jo & Jason’s fabulous pizzas.
Fancy joining us for the next one? Keep an eye on the blog and noticeboards for details.
