Morris Dancing comes to Parwich

THE VERY BEST MORRIS DANCING YOU ARE LIKEY TO SEE – coming to The Sycamore on Saturday (8th September) 1.30pm.

Rob Francis – formally of Parwich Guizers and Mummers and Winster Morris Dancer writes:

Winster Morris Dancers are having a special day on Saturday to celebrate the life of one of its oldest dancer who died a couple of years ago. They are doing this by bring three of the VERY BEST traditional Morris dance sides to Derbyshire and they are dancing at The Sycamore. The sides are Abingdon, Bamption and Eynsham and they each dance Morris which is particular to their villages in the Cotswolds – some the of dances going back to the 16th century. It is not likely that you will see three sides of such quality + Winster Traditional Morris together again. (There are some who have likened it to the Stones, the Beatles and the Cream performing at the same gig – though perhaps that a little bit of an exaggeration.) If you have the chance come along and see for yourselves. It would be good to see you there.

Home wanted for a trusty, powerful Honda electric lawnmower. During its years of faithful service, I’ve found it great for chomping through long grass, but equally good for creating a striped lawn, thanks to its heavy roller.
Free to anyone in exchange for small donation to the Parwich British Legion.

For more details call Jon on 075.

Battling on Towards the End

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Last match played in one League and only two more left in the other. All in all not a bad season for smallest Village and Club in Leagues.

Tuesday League.

Home – Matlock Golf Club – 28 August – 6.00pm.

A bit of a bogey team for us. We somehow can’t get to grips with the Golf Club, perhaps we should try a mashie niblick on a few ends. Having said that whether it was because it was the last match of the season or there wasn’t an ‘R’ in the month, we won! Captain Dawn was having a night off and Harry B partnered Frances with great effect. Perhaps Dawn should have more nights off because they won handsomely 21 – 9. Tony A and John B also had a good win 21 – 15 with Tony playing a blinder. Try as they might Dot and Sue came a gallant second, but they did not get the rub of the green. Finally our trusty pair, Edith and Rick brought home the bacon, 21 – 16. Final score Parwich 75, Golf Club 61. We are third in the league, but realistically when all the results are in we will be fourth or fifth. A lot of thanks go to Captain Dawn who puts up with us and sorts out the team and who should play with who. Many thanks for a fine job done. What will 2019 bring?

Thursday Friendly League.

Home – Chatsworth – 30 August – 1.45pm.

Chatsworth are top of the League, and deservedly so, how would we get on? The commentators curse fell on Ian J this week. Playing with Liz H they lost a hard fought game 16 – 21. I terms of doubles players Ian is 15 out of 198 players in the League. What about that! Our remaining pairs also unfortunately lost so after the doubles we were 36 – 63 down.

There were some cracking singles games with Frances and our Edith leading the way winning 15 – 3 each. Although we only won one other singles our players managed to accumulate some good points and we won the singles 76 – 64. Not quite enough to overhaul the 27 point deficit from the doubles. Still a good result against the runaway leaders. Parwich 112, Chatsworth 127.

Next Match – Away – Chatsworth B – 6 September – 1.45pm.

John B.

Parwich Legion family bike ride

We have received the following message from the Legion….

Thank you to all those brave souls who took on the challenge of the Roystone Grange climb on Monday. It was a great turn out and the sun sort of came out too so it made the 10 mile ride a very pleasant afternoon. Thank goodness there was a really tasty barbecue and great beer to celebrate the achievement.
If you’re sad you missed it, not to worry as, by popular request, we’re sure to repeat the challenge again soon.
