Annual Art Competition

Artists to showcase Derbyshire in open art competition
Artists are urged to get creative about Derbyshire’s life, landscapes and people in the annual Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition.

DCC’s competition is fast approaching its 36th year and is open to artists of all ages, professional and amateur. The judges ask that entrants use Derbyshire to inspire their submissions.

Artists should use their entries to show what does this county means to them. The work could be a Derbyshire landscape, a town or streetscape, local people, still life or representations of local stories. Artists can use most media, including oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawing, print, collage, manipulated digital imagery or three-dimensional work. Continue Reading »

Wood Chip?

Apart from Lester Lowes, does anyone know where we could get a bulk supply of bark / wood chippings relatively cheaply? It’s for the hen area so it doesn’t need to be top grade. If you can help please comment below, or call Rob and Emma (203 / 07812 996 851).

Upper Dove Flood Alert

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency.

Flood Alert in force: Upper Dove.
Flooding is possible for: Low-lying land and roads between Izaak Walton and Rocester on the River Dove and between Carsington Dam and Mayfield on the Henmore Brook.

Be prepared.
Watercourses within the Upper Dove catchment, including the Henmore Brook are rising in response to overnight and this morning’s rainfall. We will see that levels will continue to rise throughout this morning and may remain high for the remainder of today (Monday 2nd April). There may be flooding to low lying land and roads in the area. Remain vigilant as further rain is expected throughout today, which may lead to further flood risk. We will continue to monitor river levels in this location. At the time of this statement, no flooding of properties is expected and no warnings are expected to be issued. Take care near areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions and the GOV.UK website.

To check the latest information for your area
* Visit the GOV.UK website to see the current flood warnings, view river and sea levels or check the 5-day flood risk forecast: https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/target-area/033WAF315

* Or call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 using quickdial code: 208015.

* Follow @EnvAgency and #floodaware on Twitter.

* Tune into weather, news and travel bulletins on local television and radio.

What you should consider doing now

* Monitor local water levels and weather conditions.

* Get ready to act on your flood plan if you have one.

* Move your car or other vehicles to higher ground, if it is safe to do so.

* Prepare a flood kit of essential items including a torch with spare batteries, mobile phone and charger, warm clothes, home insurance documents, water, food, first aid kit and any prescription medicines or baby care items you may need.

* Check that you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies.

* In rural locations, farmers should consider moving livestock and equipment away from areas likely to flood.

* Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. 30 cm of fast-flowing water can move a car and 6 inches can knock an adult off their feet.

* Flood water is dangerous and may be polluted. Wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been in contact with it.

The Limestone Way

IMG_1086

Starbucks?

Many residents will be familiar with the Limestone Way that traverses through Parwich but few will realise that 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of its formal adoption as a long distance walking route. Much of the path has been used for 100s of years but it was only in 1970 that the route gained recognition as a long distance path. The trend to recognise such paths gave rise to the formation of the LDWA (Long Distance Walkers Association) in 1972. To mark the 50th anniversary of the path the LDWA have been looking for ways improve the walker experience and facilities along the route. As you are no doubt aware the recent activity by OpenReach around the area has resulted in upgrades to cabling into the village with fibre optics, FTTC and FTTP technologies and the new GFast making the old telephone exchange obsolete. BT and OpenReach estimate that the exchange will no longer be needed from late 2019. This has presented the LDWA in partnership with the National Park, Derby Dales and Staffordshire Moorlands councils the opportunity to provide a much needed new facility along the Limestone Way without the need for new building work in a conservation area. According to information on display in the National Park office in Bakewell the telephone exchange will be converted into an information centre providing an exhibition of the history of the limestone way, a small franchised coffee shop and ladies/gents toilet facilities. The latter particularly important for the large number of young families and older ramblers passing through the village since the closure of the public facilities on Creamery Lane.
There are also plans to involve villages along the route in celebratory events throughout 2020.

Oil Price Plummets

imageUpdate for Bradbourne & Parwich Heating Oil Club

With the latest dramatic events in the Middle East we’ve seen both Saudi Arabia and Iran make significant increases to production as they vie for a position of influence in the region by establishing market leadership and hurting their rival’s economy. This over supply has led to an unexpected dip in crude prices with a very happy outcome for consumers. In view of this we have been able to secure a new delivery price for our next order and so feel we should offer this immediately rather wait for next weeks scheduled order.

Please note the delivery time. Delivery times are subject to weather and supply conditions. Please do order early and allow plenty of time for delivery to avoid any problems and please check you tank levels, we are all using a lot more fuel than normal. It would be worth a visual inspection as we have had many reports of meters giving false levels over the last few weeks.

If you like the rate, please do spread the word. By grouping our orders, we can also substantially reduce harmful diesel emissions, CO2 and damage and danger to our roads and villages.

We have secured a rate and our clubs group oil order terms for this weekend are as follows:

Rate:  £0.2190 (pence per litre excluding vat [5% for Domestic use])
