Operation FireWatch underway in the Peak District National Park
The Peak District National Park Authority has implemented Operation FireWatch in collaboration with the Moors for the Future Partnership.Staff from the National Park, partner organisations and volunteers are in place at moorland vantage points throughout the National Park to look out for fires.
The hot, dry weather means that ground conditions on the moors are extremely dry and the risk of fire is high.Residents and visitors are asked to be extra vigilant to help prevent moorland and grassland fires.
Sarah Fowler, chief executive of the Peak District National Park Authority, said: “With the hot weather set to continue over the next few days, the risk of further fires is a real concern.We have implemented Operation FireWatch to keep a close eye on conditions on the moorlands and we are urging everyone to get involved by doing everything they can to help prevent fires starting.
“We have put fire risk warning notices at moorland access points to remind everyone of the dangers but we need people enjoying the moors to observe a few basic rules:
“Leave your barbecues and fire-pits at home. Don’t drop cigarette ends or matches. Take glass bottles and litter home with you. Don’t light fires or barbecues on or near moorland. Report fires immediately to the fire service by phoning 999.”
Fire-fighters have been tackling an extensive moorland fire in the north-west of the National Park, near Stalybridge, Tameside, since Monday (25 June) – some 2,000 hectares of moorland habitat has been destroyed. Working with fire-fighting team and other partners and moorland managers, the National Park Authority is providing staff, vehicles, supplementary equipment, logistics support and local access expertise in the hard to reach places.
Sarah Fowler added: “As we have already seen this week at Tameside, in these dry conditions moorland fires spread very quickly and are devastating to the landscape, lethal for wildlife and a threat to people and homes.
“It’s breeding season for nature at this time of year on the moorlands; we have birds nesting on the ground – plover, curlew and lapwing, insects such as the bilberry bumblebee, mountain hare and other mammals, and reptiles like the tiny common lizard. Many of these species are rare or under threat – it’s vital that we all do what we can to protect them and prevent any more fires breaking out.”
The fire at Tameside is the third moorland fire in the Peak District National Park in 2018. In May, around 40 hectares of moorland were destroyed at the Goyt Valley and five hectares of moorland were damaged by fire at Big Moor, near Baslow.
The Peak District National Park Authority and Moors for the Future Partnership are working closely together with partners, including moorland owners and managers, to assess the long-term risk of wildfires on the moors as part of a shared long-term vision for resilient, sustainable moorlands in the National Park.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Can you believe we are half way through the season and we have not got wet yet. I suppose it will rain again, but let us hope it is tomorrow. The greens are looking extremely brown indeed and when they are like this, bowls becomes more like curling. We are having mixed fortunes now though.
Tuesday League.
Home – Chatsworth A – 26 June – 6.00pm
A top of the table clash this week with Chatsworth top and us second in the division, would the table form come out the same in the match? The games were shared two each. Harry B and Dot H trying their little hearts out could not match their opponents and lost 21 – 9. Tony A and John B next up managed by some fair means or perhaps foul to overcome their opponents 21 – 10. Now you do need to keep up with the match and realise that we were one point down. Dawn A and Frances W try as they might could not overcome their pair and came second 21 – 14. We were 8 points down with only Rick and Edith to finish. They were playing Chatsworth’s best pair and again, although they won, it was not enough to claw back Chatsworth’s lead. 21 – 19 to Parwich. Final score Parwich 65, Chatsworth 71. Cracking match even though we lost and we stayed second in the division.
Next match – Bradwell – 3 July – 6.00pm
Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Bath – 21 June – 1.45pm.
The tightness of Matlock’s green and the slipperiness of the dry grass made playing a nightmare. You only had to ‘drop’ your wood on the ground and it went all the way to Sainsburys ( local knowledge of Matlock required here. Sainsburys is about a mile away ). As you know we do struggle in the doubles games and this week was no exception with only Sue A and Dennis E winning 21 – 17. Matlock 59, Parwich 28.
We shared the singles games this week with Harry B winning handsomely 15 – 5. The games that we lost also proved worthwhile as we did score well in the losses. However, the deficit from the doubles was too great to make up and we lost the match 131 – 108.
Away – Baslow – 28 June – 1.45pm
Another lightening fast square of brown stuff. Very similar to Matlock last week, but you could only get the Co-op store in Bakewell this week. Much better in the doubles though with Keith B and Liz H romping home in great style 21 – 8. Harry and Audrey B should have let us know they wanted to spend the afternoon on the ‘green’. Their game lasted just short of 2 hours achieving a great win on the last end 21 – 20. Baslow 49, Parwich 54.
We did very well in the singles winning 5 out of the 6 games. (smart bit of writing here) Nobody burned up the green any more than it already was. Baslow 119, Parwich 141.
At the start of the match we were lying third in the division even after losing last week so we will have to lose a few more to avoid promotion.
Next Match – Home – Bradwell – 5 July – 1.45pm.

What a glorious day in the sun! The PDHS’s second trip of the year was to Quarry Bank, Styal and then Lyme Park, Disley. We enjoyed a fascinating talk at the former and then got to amble around the latter’s extensive grounds in almost Mediterranean style weather. I think I overheard someone say they had clocked almost four miles walked in total today on their pedometer, and each bloom and blossom was worth every step!

Hello, as I’m sure you know I’m quite a cycling addict, yes, a proper MAMIL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra). One of the biggest events for cyclists in this country is the Prudential Ride London 100, which is, yes you guessed it, a 100 mile ride around London and Surrey; well I’ve entered this event, the cyclists version of doing a marathon……
Now the ask – recently a very dear friend of mine has passed away due to Motor Neurone Disease. I want to do something; so I’m doing the above ride on behalf of the MND Association. I hope to raise loads of funds to help with their work in helping patients, and research into finding a cure for this horrid disease.

Plant Sale
Church Farm, Creamery Lane
A range of shrubs, herbaceous plants, plants for the kitchen garden and others are on sale. If no one is about just pay what you feel is right. All plants must go.
Many of the plants were from the stall at Open Gardens and all proceeds this week will go to the Horticultural Society Open Gardens fund for village causes. If any plants remain we will continue the sale through Wakes Week with proceeds then going to the Carnival & Recreation Committee.

Good afternoon
I am hoping that Parwich.org and the wider Parwich community might be able to help with our situation?
We moved to Parwich in the summer of 2017 and we were expecting a long and happy future here, especially with the birth of our first child imminent at the time. We love the village and the people we have met have been really friendly and supportive to us.
Sadly, my wife is registered disabled with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Since the birth of our daughter, her health has got progressively worse. She has good days and bad days but the overall trend has been one of a decline.
We need to sell our house at 3 Rathbourne Croft, urgently, so that we can move to a more suitable location where we have other family close by that could help us through the bad times. We have listed our house with different estate agents for the best part of 5 months now and in that time we have only had 5 viewings, which has left us incredibly worried and frustrated; especially when we found out that the previous owners took over 2 years to sell it.
We have just gone live with a new estate agent. I would really appreciate it if Parwich.org could mention this story on their website and perhaps on a recurring basis, link to it again so we can spread the word amongst the local community that this house, newly renovated, is for sale at a very reasonable price. The house has a Derbyshire Dales Local Occupancy Clause against it. We have pleaded with our local MP and the council to remove it so we can sell quickly but they don’t seem to care about our circumstances.
If people could share this story far and wide, on Facebook for example, it may reach a potential buyer. I will also take on board any useful suggestions that might help us sell.
If I print off flyers advertising our house, could I stick them up in the noticeboards that are dotted around the village? Would I possibly be able to stick up posters in the Sycamore and the Legion do you know?
I also wonder if any stall holder at the village market on Saturday 30th June might have a few of our flyers on the corner of their table? We think Saturday would be a good opportunity for an “open house day” at our property. Anyone can come and view it on Saturday, please just knock on our door between 9am and before 6pm (when the baby goes to bed).

We would like to thank everyone in the village for helping to make the village look attractive for Open Gardens and hope that not too much inconvenience was caused by the extra traffic and visitors.
The day was very successful with takings of approximately £1500 out of which we have substantial expenses! However, we will have sufficient funds left to make donations to local groups and societies so if you think you qualify for a grant, please apply in writing before the AGM in November.
