Wizards of the Green

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Can’t grumble this week, well perhaps a little (that will make a change I hear you cry). Good bits and not so good bits. Already a quarter of the way through the season. You are rapidly missing out on some good exercise and good company.

 Tuesday League

May 16 – Away – Bradwell.

As commented last week to get two full house scores in a row is good, but three in a row? Could the valiant few of Parwich continue to astound the Crown Green bowling fraternity, and without our brilliant Captain and Edith? Yes they could. Some great bowling by Tony A and Pat B produced a 21 – 4 win. This was followed by Sue A and John B putting together a 21 – 6 victory. Not to be outdone the husband and wife duo (you see you can play together if you want) of Dennis and Clara E won 21 – 13. It was all down to our final pair of Rick and Harry B to bring home the bacon which they did by winning 21 – 17. Parwich 84, Bradwell 40. Can we keep up this standard? Come down to Parsons Croft next Tuesday evening and see the wizards of the green stuff strut their stuff. (that’s probably given the team the kiss of death!)

Next Match – Wirksworth – Home – 23 May 6.30pm.

Thursday League

May 18 – Away  – Hope Works.

We have, as you readers of these scintillating reports will know, been doing very well in this higher division we now find ourselves in, however a few of the wheels did fall off this week. You must bear in mind though that we have been through the wringer with regard to members injuries. I dread to think what Man U’s manager would have to say about things. Anyway, we lost quite well, but if the opposition play very long ‘jacks’ whilst playing against two ladies one of whom is still recovering from a broken wrist and the other with a bad ankle, what do you expect. After the doubles we were behind 63 – 27. We shared the singles games three apiece with Pat B showing how it should be done, winning 15 – 2. Still the singles gave us 78 – 68 points tally. The final outcome was never in doubt though with a victory for Hope Works 131 – 105.

Next match – Home – Bakewell – 25 May – 1.45pm.

John B.

Question for Monty

Now that the rain has come and the weeds have carpeted my garden overnight in a foot high swath, I am interested to know whether our gardening community hoe or hand weed. Hand weeding kills my back but hoeing doesn’t seem to catch every weed and I often slice through the stems of something precious. Also, does anyone have a secret weeding weapon? My preferred killer of choice is a Wilkinson Swoe and a Japanese hand tool like a curved knife but they both require serious concentration to avoid random decapitation of plants.    Patti B.

Diary Updates

We will be updating the Parwich.org Diary page this weekend, so if you have any Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich or Pikehall events (June and July) that you want to go in the Diary in time to be included in the Peak Five Churches Magazine’s June issue, please send them in by Sunday (21st of April).

Including our Diary in the Church magazine is important as it helps you reach some of those who are not on-line.

Please send Diary information to parwich@hotmail.co.uk or leave me a message on tel. 287.

Parwich Legion News

Emma Spence is standing down as Treasurer for the Legion and from the Legion committee. She has supported the Legion for many years and given a huge amount of time to help make it the successful social hub it is today. We are doing a small presentation to her at Friday’s Open the Safe, and we would like to invite Legion customers past, present and future to come and join us.
Carl Wilton is also having a bit of a break from Legion Committee duties, but he’s still going to be part of Legion activities over the summer, and will pick up again as Chair in the autumn. Phil Kirkham is covering him in the meantime.

This means we are on the lookout for new committee members, including a club treasurer. If you have knowledge around accounts and payroll, that would be fantastic, but anybody is welcome to join the committee – you just need a bit of spare time and an interest in the club. We’re keen to make sure the club offers something for everyone, so new ideas are always very welcome!

Please talk to any of the committee or ring Nina Martin (secretary) on 01335 216238 to find out more about what it involves, or to put your name forward.

IMG_0801Hi everybody! And welcome to my new monthly cookery blog post! I’m so excited I hope you will be as well when you try the dishes I have for you!

In my dishes I will be trying to use locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. If anyone trying the recipes needs help on getting ingredients I can help point you in the right direction or even share some of my own extensive stocks for rarer supplies.

For my first offering I thought it would be fun to do a complete 3 course seasonal meal! (Well it was seasonal when I started thinking about it in April, but then I had a few too many Rhubarb Mojitos!).

Among the ingredients at their best at this time of the year are watercress, asparagus spinach, lettuce, Jersey Royals, prawns, gooseberries, and purple sprouting broccoli. Growing locally you’ll find wild garlic, lamb (obviously) and rhubarb (I can point you to a few easily accessible gardens if you don’t have any growing yourself 😉

So here’s the menu-

Wild Garlic Soup

Roast Leg of Lamb on Boulangère Potatoes

Rhubarb Mojito

I had intended to include a rhubarb based dessert but then discovered this mojito and thought why bother! For those not inclined to try the full 3 courses I recommend jumping to the mojito now 👍🏼

If you try any of my recipes, or have a favourite of your own drop us a line at parwich@hotmail.co.Uk or “Leave a Comment” below..

Playing their Socks Off

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Having had only one match last week, it was back to normal this. Back to normal on a number of fronts predominantly people not being available to play for one reason or another  but also a welcome return of some players after injury. Still if this week is anything to go by we should be so lucky.

Tuesday League

May 9 – Home – Bakewell.

Scoring a full house (84) in this league is a good result, but to score a full house back to back is terrific. Everybody played their little socks off. Leading the way was an unlikely pairing of Dot and Harry B. They stormed home 21 – 12. Thankfully Edith and Rick were also playing to their usual standard and beat a very good Bakewell pair 21 – 13. Chipping in with a win were Tony A and John B 21 – 14. However, the game of the night was Dawn and Pat B. Talk about grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat. At first they could not get started at all and before long they were 12 – 2 down. Matters continued down hill to the point where they were 20 – 9 down. Of course the dynamic duo kept going and slowly but surely they got to 20 all. What a result, they won the next end to grab victory by 21 – 20 thus giving us our second full house two weeks running. Final outcome Parwich 84, Bakewell 59.

I don’t think we will make it three in a row though.

Next Match – Bradwell – Away – 16 May 6.30pm.

 Thursday League

May 11 – Home  – Bradwell.

A bit of a rehearsal for next weeks Tuesday League match and at least we had the pleasure of welcoming back a couple of our ‘crocked’ members. This helped us field 10 players this week.

We more than held our own in the doubles games with a welcome return from Liz H playing with Sue A who won 21 – 15. Ian J and Rick are becoming quite a pair, and they are not bad at bowls either. Although they lost, it was by the narrowest of margins 20 – 21. Now bearing in mind Audrey B broke her wrist only a few weeks ago to only loose, partnered by John H, by 21 – 13 words cannot express the bravery shown and fighting spirit we have! (well it looks good doesn’t it). After the doubles we were only three points down.

In the singles we grabbed four games out of the six, with Rick and John H having to play twice and winning to 3 and 6 respectively. Parwich 75, Bradwell 62.

At some point in the future we are going to have some, if not all of our wheels falling off. Next week at Hope, I think possibly so.

Next match – Away – Hope Works – 18 May – 1.45pm.

John B.

Meet the New Bloggers

The Blog Team have great pleasure in introducing to you two new guest bloggers!

Firstly our gardening (in)expert Monty Who. You may have already seen his ramblings in the Two Feet Apart postings, writing as The Hauty Culturist.

IMG_0800Monty, by his own admission, is a sometimes keen but inexperienced gardener. He is happy to share what he learns and encourage others to share their knowledge. The driving force behind Monty is his wife, affectionately referred to as Mrs. Monty, the real source of Monty’s monthly job list and projects. Mrs. Monty is a wannabee racing tipster who has already tipped the Grand National winner here on the blog. Monty is still in the dog house for failing to put a bet on her tip (though he did back the winner at Uttoxeter in the Midlands National). Monty is often mistaken for his more illustrious gardening namesake but as can be seen from his picture here he can be easily recognised by his stylish and snappy dress.

Secondly, the newest member of the team, food and cookery expert Michelle N. Starr.

IMG_0801Michelle loves cooking and has a great knowledge of food and drink. In her monthly blog she will be introducing some of her favourite dishes using local and seasonal ingredients. Never afraid of controversy she will also be enticing feedback on the great  issues that have occupied the finest culinary brains for centuries in her “Let’s have a (re)heated debate” section. Finally we will have the answers to questions such as brown sauce, red sauce? and baked – hot ot cold? Michelle is keen to try new recipes but as can be seen from her picture she does like to keep her favourite ingredients close at hand at all times.

Look out for Michelle’s first posting coming very soon and please welcome her to the team.

Both our new team members are hoping to get lots of advice and suggestions from blog readers so please feel free to add comments on their posts or send ideas into parwich@hotmail.co.uk

Today is the last chance to order!

The Legion will be offering an arrangement with local takeaways for delivery to Parwich once a month, alternating Indian with Chinese.

Next week we will do a group order to Red Chilli in Ashbourne – their food is very tasty and they have different levels of spiciness from not to hot! Click here to link to their menu, or call in to the Legion where there are menus to pick up and order forms.

Please place your order, with payment, at the Legion by 8.30 pm on Tuesday 9th May.

Your meal will be delivered to the Legion on Wednesday 10th May at 7.30 pm.

You can either collect your meal and take it home, or stay and eat with us with an Indian beer or your usual tipple. Please indicate when you place your order if you want to eat in, so we can ensure we set out enough tables.
