Tom is in the news this week, on Saturday evening, 23rd July, Tom is special guest on live The National Lottery Draw and he is also in Hello Magazine, talking about his new show, Top Hat .
Tom Chambers and Summer Strallen star in Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ legendary Hollywood hit of the 1930s. One of the greatest dance musicals of all time, Top Hat receives its world premiere live on stage at Milton Keynes Theatre, before setting off on a UK tour.
Tom Chambers, Strictly Come Dancing winner and Holby City heartthrob, plays Jerry Travers, the famous American tap dancer who arrives in London to appear in his first West End show. Travers meets the irresistible Dale Tremont, the girl of his dreams, played by Summer Strallen (triple Olivier Award nominee and star of Love Never Dies, The Boy Friend and Hollyoaks) and follows her across Europe in an attempt to win her heart with his wonderful song and dance routines.
Irving Berlin’s celebrated score features such classics as Cheek to Cheek, Let’s Face The Music & Dance, Isn’t It A Lovely Day To Be Caught In The Rain and Top Hat, White Tie & Tails.
Beautiful sets, lavish costumes and sensational dancing will sweep you off your feet in this stunning new musical comedy.
The tour begins on 16th August and reaches Salford Quays on September 28th for 12 days

Leaflets have been dropped off at every house informing everyone that the Saturday Bulk Rubbish finishes on Saturday 27th August. This means that Alsop get their final collection on 6th August and Ballidon on 13th August, but there will be no further collections in Parwich.
From Monday 1st August NO cardboard can be put in the green bin, it has to be placed in the Blue Bag along with newspapers etc. The Green Bin is for garden and kitchen waste, and it will be inspected before being emptied.
Bulky items can be disposed of at the Recycling Centres at Ashbourne or the new centre at Northwood, Darley Dale.
To read the leaflets click on the photos.

Pilates has now finished until September. Unfortunately because of a serious back injury a few years ago, Georgie has decided that she can no longer run the evening Pilates sessions, so the committee are now looking for a replacement teacher.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Pilates this year.

By a quirk in the fixtures computer we played Chatsworth in both Leagues this week. Inevitably the results in each match were very different.
Tuesday league
12 July – Away – Chatsworth.
Some matches although they are lost are still really excellent, this was one such match. The venue at Chatsworth helps. Anyway we only managed to win one game out of the four played in the Tuesday League, but they were all close games. In the end we lost 83 to 73. Sometimes when you win you do not get as many points. The match, however, was really enjoyable. We had dropped to mid table in the League. Let us hope this score will allow us not to drop any further.
Next match 19 July – Home – Ashwood Park.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
14 July – Home – Chatsworth.
For some time we have not been playing well in the doubles games in the Thursday League. This week, we won all three games very convincingly. We also managed to win 4 out of the six singles games. The overall result was therefore a resounding win 139 to 94. This will hopefully stop us dropping any further down the table.
Next match 21 July – Away – Matlock Golf Club.

The coach was completely full as we set off to Felley Priory Garden, situated a few miles from Heanor. The weather was kind, and a pleasant morning was spent by all wandering through the 2.5 acre garden. There were some very unusual plants but luckily the gardener was on hand to help identify any that were not labelled. Although the rose garden had clearly suffered from the very dry weather, the newly planted White Garden was delightful.
The perennial herbaceous borders were full of colour and there were opportunities to take time to sit and enjoy the surrounding. Lunch was simple but tasty, although competition from a second coach party seemed to stretch the cafe’s capacity! However, everyone managed to eat, shop at the nursery and be ready to leave at 1.30pm for our onward journey.
We approached Hebb’s Farm with a little trepidation, as a previous group had given poor feedback. Hebb’s Farm is the private garden of Stuart Dixon, who has previously spoken to the Horticultural Society. Our fears proved groundless. The garden was lovely, with even more unusual plants and some more familiar ones. There were lots of places to sit and enjoy the different areas, and for those of us who have a permanent plant wish-list – the plants were all clearly labelled, note books and pencils were put to good use.
Stuart Dixon was a great host, very approachable and happy to share his knowledge and experience, it was a garden with a lot of soul. The afternoon was made complete by delicious scones and a cup of tea served by Stuart’s wife.
I think it is safe to say, “A good day was had by all”.

Avril is selling her Peugeot 206 coupe cabriolet which she’s had from new and is in very good condition. Its only done 26,500 miles (!) and has been kept garaged. Its automatic with a 1.6 litre engine that does about 39 miles to the gallon. MOT’d until 18th March 2012, it also has road tax paid until February 2012.
Yours for £3,100, not a high price for such a low mileage car with a retractable electric roof. By the way, both car and roof have been completely reliable.
You can see it by calling Avril or Keith on 01335 390500 or calling at Fernlea House opposite the Village Hall.

Dorset: day four.
More Theory, and a very long day. I crammed the last section, and I was still late leaving. Review #5, an exam and a further written examination: done and passed. My brain is fried!
I’m staying at The Villa on Brownsea Island, in Poole harbour. Walking back along the board walk, I saw deer in the edge of the marsh and a tern whilst waiting at the jetty. I’m tired… will write more tomorrow.
Rockley Park and my first confined dive.
Tomorrow is tonight and I dislike diving intensely! I fought back tears in the pool; it’s tough. Almost drowned at the bottom, trying to clear my mask; coughing and spluttering at two and a half meters is not funny. On surfacing, I’m emotional. Lou asks me if I want to continue with the course, “because you don’t seem to be enjoying it”… Continue Reading »

As in previous years, it would be great if parents/families could please bring along donations of party food for everyone to share.
If you are wondering what to bring, this may give you some idea. If you could bring a couple of items from the list, enough for your own children/family (or maybe a little more!) and then everyone shares, it should work out OK!
Sandwiches – Crisps etc – Veg sticks/salad – Cocktail sausages or other savouries – Cakes – Biscuits – Fruit
All hot drinks and soft drinks will be provided by the PTA.
If you have any questions, please ask Sam L (477), Sally P, or Mandy N.

REMINDER: the balloon launch takes place tomorrow (Thursday), so this is your last chance to buy tickets!

Continuing with their 150th anniversary celebrations, Parwich Primary School are holding a Balloon Launch.
On Thursday 14th July, starting at 2pm, each of the fifty children will launch a balloon to celebrate education at Parwich Primary School.
Each Parwich Primary School child will be given a balloon, free of charge, to release on the afternoon. However, everyone else needs to purchase one!
This means that the school has 100 balloons to sell, to make this event a success!
Each balloon can be bought for a minimum donation of £2.
To be in with a chance to win, all you have to do is:
1. Click here to open the order slip, then print it off. Parents will already have received paper versions of the slip.
2. Fill in the slip, completing your details for the label as you want them to appear.
3. Turn up on Thursday July 14th at 2pm, to be part of a fab afternoon, with hope for a clear day.
4. Look forward to your balloon travelling the furthest, so you’re in with a chance of winning a first prize of £25, a second prize of £15, or a third prize of £10.
Anyone can purchase a balloon and there is no limit to the number you are permitted to buy.
All money raised goes towards our ‘Celebration Garden’ which will begin to take shape during September and October and will provide an amazing outdoor learning environment for all our children.

As this year’s Big Butterfly Count is about to get underway, here is some more information about the project, which might appeal to anyone with an interest in nature conservation.
The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide survey, which aims to help in assessing the health of our environment. 10,000 people took part last year, counting 210,000 butterflies and day-flying moths across the nation.
According to the Big Butterfly Count’s website:
Butterflies react very quickly to change in their environment, which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses. That’s why counting butterflies can be described as taking the pulse of nature. The count will also assist in identifying trends in species that will help plan how to protect butterflies from extinction, as well as understanding the effect of climate change on wildlife.
This year’s count runs between 16th and 31st July.
To take part, simply count butterflies for fifteen minutes during bright (and preferably sunny) weather, at any time between 16th and 31st July. This can be done anywhere: gardens, fields, school grounds and so on. You also should try to identify the species of each butterfly you see.
Then register your findings on the Big Butterfly Count website: http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/
The website contains all the information that you will need about the Big Butterfly Count – including an illustrated chart, which you can print off and use while you’re counting.

Dorset: day two.
I found my way to the medical centre over in Parkstone with one minute to spare. Blood pressure, pulse, heart and lungs. The result: fit for diving, with no restrictions. The Doc examines guys that dive to a depth of 200m – and here I am, thinking 2m is too deep!
There was light mist this morning and drizzle the rest of the day. I took a detour via Studland on my return, but didn’t stop. There are National Trust car parks everywhere, which makes things expensive on the ‘recce’ front.
On to the B&B and more study. The dive manual, chapter 4… and an afternoon nap?! I must be tired.
This evening I was invited to a bbq at the PADI centre. I met Eileen, the instructor who will be teaching me tomorrow evening, and chatted with a couple of ladies.
I need an Ordnance Survey Map, National Trust membership, and to work out where I can store my materials on the mainland to make it easier traveling back and forth to the island…
Dorset: day three.

Everyone is invited to the Open Meeting on Community Renewable Energy, tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7.45pm in the Memorial Hall.
The meeting will be lead by John Youatt. Although he will cover the points below, it is a meeting set up to enable our village to find out more about how we can help ourselves with becoming more sustainable – something which becomes ever more relevant as energy prices continue to rise.
1. Formation of Sustainable Youlgrave : why & how
2. Access to grants for feasibility studies for larger communities projects such as Alport hydro scheme, Friden AD plant
3. Help & support for individual projects, eg solar/pv on house roof
4. Government policies, eg Feed-in-Tariffs
5. Planning difficulties

I have 2 tickets for Sunday 17th July 10.30am at the Buxton Festival (excellent seats 2nd row)
Will Hutton – Them and Us: Politics, Greed and Inequality
17 July, 10.30am. Opera House
Will Hutton’s latest book shows how our society has fragmented into inequality and sets out a powerful and brilliantly argued call for a fair society. His heartfelt campaign is for no less than a radical transformation of Britain, from its political system, media, and its over-reliance on big finance to the very values we live by. Writer, columnist and former editor of The Observer, Will Hutton musters convincing arguments for political change based on a firm moral framework, and his book is certain to inform the current affairs agenda for some time to come.
Tickets: £10
Please let me know if you can use them.

Parwich artist Esther Tyson is working on a project to immortalise the seahorses of Dorset in art – but first of all, she has to learn to swim underwater. Esther’s project diary continues below…
Dorset: day one.
I’m tired; it’s been a long day starting with a drive around Holton Heath Trading Estate looking for a PADI sign. In actual fact it began earlier with a full English breakfast, but that was an unexpected treat due to a double booking on the accommodation front.
9.41am, a cup of tea and we jump right in to Chapter One of the dive manual: The Underwater World, followed by Dive Equipment, Scuba Systems, The Buddy System and Confines Water Dive Preview. At the end of each chapter there is a two page knowledge review and I’m tested.
Chapters Two and Three are long. They cover: Adapting to the Underwater World, Respiration, Dive Equipment, Buddy System: Communication and Procedures, Confined Water Dive Preview, The Dive Environment, Dive Planning, Boat Diving, Problem Management, Confined Water Dive Preview, General Open Water Skills, Open Water Dives 1 and 2.
The objectives are covered; I fill out the self-assessment and take three short exams.
I’m done in. Lunch, another mug of tea and we plough on with the practical side of things. We look at the different masks on show and check for fit, the snorkel, boots and fins. I try on a semi-dry wetsuit. Boy, it’s tough to pull on. How I’d fasten it on my own, I don’t know! My suit may be a cerise/purple, rather than the red of the dive center. I had hoped to be coordinated – but just when I’d pondered the red and black theme, I’m now red, cerise and yellow! Where’s the pot of gold?
We stand side by side to set up our gear. In front of me is the tank filled with compressed clean air, a BCD and some regs. I copy the routine of putting the equipment together then pack up. It’s now my turn to set up without help; did it all sink in? This was one of the steps I thought would be difficult, but having repeated the process a couple of times it now seems quite simple. This is good!
We finished at 6pm, and I’ve spent the last two hours walking in the edge of the surf, along the beach in Swanage. Revitalizing! And there is so much pink along the tide line…!

Another extremely successful Wakes Week is over and thanks must go to everyone who took part, spectators, participants, organisers and helpers, but without the hard work of the committee who meet, plan and co-ordinate the events we wouldn’t have this amazing week. So special thanks to Kerry Allsop, Janet Bainbridge, Sandra Chadfield, Roger Cundy, Liz Edge, Denis Laycock, Alan & Barbara Lowes, Paula Lynam, Sharon Swindell and Karen Wigley.
Next year’s Wakes begins on Saturday 30th June 2012.

The Masquerade Ball is scheduled to taked place on Saturday July 16th. Tickets are priced at £20, and they can be purchased from Tracy Marshall, Mandy Noble or Sally Peat. Alternatively, please ring 01335 390552 for further details.
Message from the organisers:
Ticket sales for this event, for whatever reason, have been very slow and we are becoming concerned as to whether this event should take place or not.
If you are interested in attending The Masquerade Ball and have not yet purchased your tickets, would you please do by TONIGHT, so that we can assess whether to proceed with the event or whether to cancel or postpone it to a later date.
It would be incredibly disappointing to cancel or postpone, as we have put a great deal of effort into organising this event to co-inside with Parwich Primary School’s 150th year anniversary.
Due to lack of government funding, the PTA work very hard to raise money for the school to ensure that the children do not miss out on their educational needs, by raising money for educational trips, books etc.
So, please support this event if you can. We promise it will be a fantastic evening with exceptional food, a magician, music and wine! The only stipulation is a mask (which you don’t have to wear all evening) and no jeans or trainers (you don’t need a ball gown or tuxedo to have a good time).
BUT: please don’t forget buy your tickets by tonight – Friday July 8th.

Before starting on this week’s informative and knowledgeable details of the results of the league team a few words on the Bowls Extravaganza which took place on Wednesday night. We all thought, considering it was organised chaos, that it went off really well. Some of the participants were very good indeed. We will have to see if we can organise something else later in the year. Perhaps we can try and persuade some adults to have a go. Well done to all concerned. It was fabulous to see the bowling green so full!
Turning to the informative and knowledgeable details for this week, we lost both matches. We will have to get some of the children to play for us.
Tuesday league -5 July – Home – Lafarge.
Last week was not good, this week was somewhat worse. The only consolation is that Lafarge are a much bigger club than us and have more players. The other factor of course is they played better than we did. We were exactly half way in the league. No doubt we have dropped down into the bottom half.
Next match 12 July – Away – Chatsworth.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League – 7 July – Away – Wirksworth.
Again this week we did not do well in the doubles games, losing all three again. One game however was only a narrow defeat. We did alright in the singles though, winning 4 of the 6 and only just losing in the other two. The result though was 129 to Wirksworth and 111 to us.
Next match 14 July – Home – Chatsworth.
