Regular reader Helen K has spotted a featured “four churches walk” in today’s Guardian online travel section, which starts at Brassington, then takes in Ballidon, Parwich and Bradbourne. The walk is nine miles long, and the feature contains a link to a route map. Click here to take a look.

Tomorrow’s rubbish collection should be on schedule, but they will only go on roads where the feel it is safe to do so. It is unlikely that collections will be as early as they normally are, because the hydrolics have to be unfrozen before they leave. They have said that any bins that are placed on accessible roads will be emptied. Derbyshire Dales: 01629 761100

We have received the following message from Rick G:
Can anyone help? We were expecting a small parcel to be delivered for us on Monday 6th at Hallgates, up by the Hall. The courier company says that it was delivered, and signed for on Monday afternoon. But it wasn’t received by us 😦
The only reference they have for name and address of the person that signed is “Rosewood”.
Can anyone shed any light?
Many thanks
Rick G

A big thank you from us here at Gibbons Bank for all you have been doing to keep us informed and safe over this recent spell of bad weather.
Because of my work commitments and our bookings for concerts etc, we had to stay in Derby/London and we kept ourselves informed about what was going on through the blog. We were only planning to stay away for one day, but we were away for five, so the blog allowed Martin to get home for clean clothes.
So a big thank you for all your efforts, and to all those contributors who have made the blog so very successful.
Happy thoughts,
Jean Compton

Just to let everyone know that the Carol Concert on Sunday afternoon at 3pm is still going ahead unless we have any more significant snow falls before then.
We would love to see as many people as possible in Church to enjoy the concert and to join us for warm mince pies and tea and coffee afterwards.

I have had a call from Mark who runs circuit training at the Memorial Hall, to say it is his intention to run the class on Thursday 9th December at 6PM.

I’ve just been informed that the Over Sixties Group Carol Service planned for Thursday has just been cancelled.
Several of the groups have advised that they will not be coming because of the weather, and the current lack of parking space in the village due to the lying piles of snow has made continuing with the event unadvisable.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Many of you will know our Reader Sheena Bryden. She has ministered in our Benefice over a number of years, serving on the PCC at Parwich and with particular responsibility, in recent times, for the church family service at Tissington.
Sheena has felt for some time, that God is calling her to exercise her ministry in the Ashbourne Benefice (where she lives). The Diocese has considered this and has decided to grant her request. The date set by the Diocese for Sheena’s transfer is the end of November, which doesn’t give us time to say a proper thank you and good-bye. Therefore, we will say good-bye to Sheena during our 11am service at Parwich on January 30th. I’m sure you all join me in thanking Sheena for her ministry in the Benefice and in praying for her through this time of transition.
Revd Andy Larkin.
Sheena has become a good friend to many locally, so parwich.org would like to take this opportunity to wish her all the best for the future.

As a result of the weather, last Friday’s rubbish collection didn’t happen. Having spoken to Derbyshire Dales today, the refuse vehicles will be out on Friday, but they will only go on roads where the feel it is safe to do so. It is unlikely that collections will be as early as they normally are, because the hydrolics have to be unfrozen before they leave. They have said that any bins that are placed on accessible roads will be emptied. Derbyshire Dales: 01629 761100

As Matt H pointed out, last night was another cold one. So again beware of ice, also bear in mind road salt may may be less effective at very low temperatures. Although conditions are likely to be the same as yesterday, do add any further information in the comments below.

In a couple of posts I have commented that the temperatures recorded by Mike G’s weather station at the top of the village were higher than those at Graham J’s in the centre of the village. I had assumed that the colder temperatures in the bottom of the valley related to cold air flowing down the hillside. However as Mike points out, this is not necessarily the cause of the difference:
Re- your observation on differences between the top and bottom of the hill. I have three thermometers in different positions outside: location, weather, and sun position, (all three in shade) can make a big difference between the readings.
For example here are the temperatures from Mike’s three thermometers for last night/this morning:

-7.1 C |
-6.9 C |
| No.2 |

Nia L would like to know…
…if anyone in Parwich has any hand bells, as we are doing The Sound of Music at Terra Nova next Term (Bertie is a German and Lexie is the goat herder girl… and a nun!) and I am doing the choreography for the waltzing and umphahing bit.
Anyway, we need hand bells for one of the scenes and we promise to look after them if anyone is willing to lend them. We may even come and perform in Parwich if it is good enough – which it will be!
If you are able to help out, please contact Nia on 661, or by e-mailing the blog team at the usual address.

The lack of more snow recently should mean the roads already cleared remain so. However the very cold night will have created dangerously icy conditions so please take care first thing. (Click here to see the current temperature in Parwich.) As always please use the comments facility to share any news or information and any requests or offers of help.
It is hoped that the Schools will reopen today, however you can click here to check for any Derbyshire School closures.
Also see BBC Derby Travel News for updates for roads across the County.

A beautiful painting of Parwich was displayed this evening on the Antiques Roadshow!
The programme was filmed at Chatsworth and there were many items brought along that had connections with the estate. This particular picture was painted in 1950 by Bert Broomhead, who was a gamekeeper at Chatsworth. The Duke and Duchess must have been impressed as they provided Bert with his own studio.
It is fascinating to see how this aspect of the village looked 60 years ago. There were significantly fewer houses at this time.
If you missed the programme, you can watch it for a limited period on the BBC iPlayer. Click here and see the painting 29 minutes and 17 seconds into the programme.
Added on Monday (by Peter T)
Mike does this re-orientation of the painting help locate it? It must be south and slightly east of the Church on the slopes of Parwich Hill. How about on Creamery Lane level with Knob Hall, though several buildings may have been ommitted and/or redesigned?

Over the last couple of months, the “banner” images for PARWICH.ORG have all been taken from the same place, allowing us to play “spot the difference” with the passing of the season: from greens to golds, then to bare branches and finally to snow.
To view the entire set from beginning to end, please click the image below.
Hint: in some browsers, you may need to click the image a second time, in order to enlarge it fully.
For reference, the banners were taken on these dates: October 10/17/24/30, November 6/13/15/27, December 5.

Our weatherman on the hill says:
Cold again all week, less snow threat. Low ground temperatures making icy conditions on the roads and underfoot.
Possible a very slow thaw at times.
Again it is interesting to note that the temperature readings from the top of the village above have been warmer than those in the bottom of the valley by the Church (click here for current readings).

An easing of the temperature to just above the freezing mark caused a significant melting of the snow today. Driving conditions became easier and for some it was the first time in days that they have been able to get their vehicles down the hill. Walking in and around the village was still pretty difficult as the powdery snow turned into that horrible brown slush.
As the water melted and dripped down from the roofs, many beautiful icicles were formed. Thank you to J F-S for sending us a selection he encountered during the course of the day.
Click on any image to enlarge it.
Send us your icicle pictures!

Motorists are being asked to park with care in Ashbourne town centre after police officers have received complaints from local businesses.
The issue has been raised on Compton Street, where vehicles are being parked inconsiderately and blocking exits and entrances, especially around Lumbards Garage and petrol station.
PC Ian Cooper of the Ashbourne Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Vehicles are often left being unattended, in positions that fully obstruct entrances and exits, and making it difficult for drivers to get on and off the garage forecourt.
“We are well aware of the problem and will be dealing with offences where drivers are causing an obstruction or parked in a position which restricts the view for other motorists and pedestrians.”
Concerns have also been raised about drivers who are leaving vehicles outside of the marked areas.
He added: “It mostly seems to be people who are looking to nip into the shops, but I would advise them to think about where they are parking and with care and consideration to others. Your shopping could become much more costly if you take the risk and receive a fixed penalty notice.”
A fixed penalty notice, which is a £30 fine, can be issued by police officers for obstruction or by Derbyshire County Council Parking Attendants for parking outside marked spaces and permitted zones.
Don’t forget Monday 13th – Safer Neighbourhood Meeting at the Memorial Hall at 7.30pm.
