Parwich Parish Council invite your responses to:
Derbyshire Dales District Council have an exciting new sports initiative called Derbyshire Village Games.
Villages across rural Derbyshire will be able to start new sports clubs and activities, host festivals and competitions. A village games co-ordinator has been appointed to provide support,advice and guidance to communities who want more and better sports opportunities within their local area. This will be discussed at the Parish Council meeting on Tuesday 05 October 2010.
If there is interest in the initiative the Parish Council will invite the co-ordinator to a meeting. Please contact the clerk on ppccl@fsmail.net
You can find out more about the initiative on Facebook Group Page or at the Derbyshire Sport website or at the Community Sports Trust website.
Is this of interest in relation to any of our existing events (Wakes Hill Race or Parwich Panoramic Five) or to the existing clubs/groups (bowls, tennis, cricket, pilates, etc)? Alternatively will this be relevant to possible new activities in the new Memorial Hall (e.g. badmington, indoor bowls, yoga)?

As always the first part of the meeting is open for the public to address or question the Council. Note, Road Safety/Speed limits is on the Agenda and our local PCSO is to attend for this discussion.

Road safety is an issue raised by our readers at regular intervals, as illustrated by the post last Saturday, which has attracted a lot of interest and comments sharing the author’s concerns. Here are a couple of earlier posts on the same topic:
It is great to see the increases in children playing out and in cycle use, and a majority (73%) of parwich.org readers support the idea of a 20mph speed limit in the village.
The Village Action Group raised the idea of the Parwich roads as a shared space (pedestrians having priority) including a 20mph speed limit with the Peak Park who are supportive of the idea. (These ideas grew out of the traffic survey undertaken in preparation for the new Memorial Hall planning application.)
Parwich Parish Council regularly discuss roads and footpaths at their monthly meetings. So look out for details of the next meeting.

Thank you to Lynne Burrow, Area Peak Park Ranger, for information relating to a voluntary restriction for motor vehicles on Gallowlow Lane, south of Mininglow over the winter and the erection of drive with care signs on Green Lane near Pikehall. It also explains how the action being taken on these lanes links to wider work that the National Park is carrying out to address problems caused by motor vehicle activity in the Peak District, which may also be of interest. The restriction/signs refer to motor vehicles and not pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders:
Issues relating to Green Lanes near Parwich.
The use of the Peak District landscape by 4x4s, quad bikes, trail bikes and other motorsport enthusiasts is one area that often arouses strong emotions. Concerns often centre around motorsports causing:
- Damage to the landscape
- Noise disruption to residents
- Potential safety issues for other users, like walkers or cyclists.

This means in order to watch TV from this date you would need either:
- A Freeview set top box (they start from £20) and possibly a new aerial + your old telly
- Or a TV with Freeview built in
- Or a satellite dish + a Sky Freesat box or Skybox (£150+, or a subscription) + your old telly.
To receive High Definition (HD) TV, you would need a TV that is HD ready + a HD set top box.

The authors of Parwich Heights have been indisposed over the Summer. One took a villa in Tuscany and had a fling with a tempestuous Italian painter. Another became a stowaway in a merchant vessel that survived terrible storms in the Indian ocean. Yet another retired to her scottish castle and composed her magnum opus – concerto for bagpipes and orchestra.
But the summer is at an end and duty tugs at the heartstrings of each of our creative dream weavers. The demands of an expectant public cannot go unheeded for ever. The next instalment of Parwich Heights is about to be published! The hour has been chosen: midnight on Friday October 1st. No queueing outside bookshops is necessary – the Parwich Heights website will suffice.

There is an interview with Tom Chambers and Gethin Jones on the OK magazine website. Also the feature contains several recipes: celebrity gossip and sexy food photos.
From the 19th of November to the 1st January Tom is appearing in White Christmas in the Sunderland Empire. This is a great theatre from the heyday of Music Hall.
Rumor has it that there may be a coach trip being organised from Parwich to see White Christmas, so if you are interested watch this space or speak to Stuart.

To all our friends in Parwich,
How can I find words to thank you for all the love and comfort that you have shown to Andrew during his illness, and now to me and my family as we face life without him.
Your wonderful cards, phone calls and offers of help brought Andrew much happiness and encouragement as I took them into hospital each day. He just loved Parwich, and all of you, and our years of retirement here were some of the happiest of our lives.
It was so comforting that he knew of the love that surrounded him. We just wish that he could have seen everyone at work in the Church getting ready for the funeral service. Thank you for all the beautiful flowers and foliage you brought from your gardens, and all the time and skill you gave so freely to make the Church look so beautiful. My family and I found it very moving to see you all at work and hear the shared memories of Andrew’s life here.
And now the healing goes on as I receive your loving messages of sympathy. Two passages in the Bible were very special to us – Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; they who believe in me shall never die” and “Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

There is likely to be an interruption to the water supply to Parwich this week for ‘essential maintenance of the water main’ (Severn Trent ref Fcr 8344). The notice I received (on the Green) stated the following times:
- Wednesday 29th September: from 8am to 6pm
Do let us know (via parwich@hotmail.co.uk or in a comment below) if you have different days or times, and how large an area is involved. Not everyone seems to have got a letter. If your water is cut off beyond the notified times or you are not give 48 hours notification of scheduled work you may be entitled to compensation. Severn Trent can be contacted on tel. 0800 783 4444, for more information.
While the water supply is disrupted Severn Trent say not to try to use any mains water, including flushing toilets and hot water. So you will need to set up emergency supplies. One option for flushing toilets is to fill the bath in advance with cold water and then use buckets to flush the toilet. Do you have any other useful tips?
PS Be careful not to leave any taps turned on during the interruptions. In the past several local households were flooded as a result of this with the water coming back on at higher pressure.

Residents can meet with their local safer neighbourhood policing team to discuss issues and set priorities at a meeting to be held on Monday 27th September at 7.30pm at Kniveton School.
Meetings are held every three months to bring together the police, local councils and other agencies who work together to addressing the concerns of the communities they serve.
There will also be a chance to meet local officers and to get an update on what they have been targeting during previous months.

We have received the following message from Sue H:
I sit in our kitchen and listen to the whoosh of cars or the great clanking of tractors that are simply going too fast. (For the most part lorries and vans approach at a much more acceptable speed). I can’t say whether vehicles are actually breaking the speed limit but they are certainly driving too fast to be safely under control. I really fear for a serious accident at some point. There have already been 2 kittens killed on the road and I hate the thought that at some point it could well be a child. We have 9 youngsters along this stretch, some of whom are old enough to be road savvy but others who will just be starting to venture out on their own.
Perhaps drivers are not aware that they are already in the village when they come down from Townhead. Or perhaps they think that they have already left all civilisation once past the Hall on their way up through Parwich Dale. Nobody seems to take notice of the existing “school” sign. I seem to remember someone mentioning Brassington’s idea for slowing down traffic at entry points to the village: white road markings and white fencing to give the impression of the road narrowing. Is this something we should be considering? Or what about setting a 20 mph limit through the village? Maybe this would be the only way to make people more responsible in their driving.

Andrew’s loss is strongly felt by the Community of which he has been such an active participant. Our sympathy goes out to Rachel and their family.
His funeral is at 1-30pm on Monday 27th September in St. Peter’s Church, followed by refreshments in the Memorial Hall.
Members of the parish will be decorating the Church, so if you have any flowers or Autumn foliage (including berries) from your gardens, please bring them to the Church on Saturday or on Sunday morning and leave them in the buckets provided near the entrance. If in doubt about what to bring contact Jean C or Helen P.

This week’s Stunner has a couple of Parwich references; on p.5 there is a photograph of Janet behind the bar, accompanying an article on the 2011 Good Beer Guide which includes an entry on the Sycamore Inn.
Also on p.7 there is a short article about this Saturday’s official opening of the new Memorial Hall, including a concert by the B52s. Does this mean that the Highways Agency has down graded the band, or have they changed their name to fit in with the Memorial aspect of the Hall?

Thanks to all those who helped in any way to make last night’s Harvest Supper such a success. I am pleased to say that £350 was raised to support the work of the Padley Centre in Derby. In addition £106 was collected on Sunday at our Harvest Festival Service for flood relief in Pakistan.

Parwich were represented by 4 runners in the Ashbourne half marathon and fun run. Bertie L the 6th boy to finish the fun run, just ahead of Izzy P who was the third girl to finish.
In the half marathon Sue P was only a few minutes ahead of Graham J, he was running his first half marathon and has never run more than 10 miles. Both runners finished in less that 1 hour 50 minutes, on what is considered a tough course, going up a number of hills near Thorpe and Blore before finishing back at the rugby ground.

Parwich artist Esther Tyson will be showing six paintings at a prestigious exhibition sponsored by The Society of Wildlife Artists. The theme of the exhibition is ‘The Natural Eye’. The picture below is one of those that will be available to see first hand.
