As the temperature dropped to minus 5 degrees C on Thursday night, the hardy souls of Parwich gathered round the Christmas tree on The Green to sing carols.
Despite the cold, the event was full of pre-Christmas magic. We would like to extend our thanks to the Ashbourne Band, who came to play (and must have found the mouthpieces on the brass instruments a bit nippy!).
After carols, mince pies and refreshments were served. Thank you again to the organisers of these and to Dennis for leading the singing.

Due to a water leak on Church Walk outside Church View (Graham & Amanda’s), a section of the road (between Hallcliffe and Jasmine House) is now covered in sheet ice. Please take care if you are driving or on foot. It may be better to go around via Creamery Lane.
The Water Board and the Police have been informed, but even when the leak has been stopped the ice will remain.

What to look out for – the shape of Orion.
The Peak District National Park are asking for help monitoring light pollution. They want people to observe Orion between New Year’s Eve and the start of February. To participate go to the Peak Park website, or for more information read their following press release:

The fire engine in Parwich today was attending a chimney fire at a house on the Green. Fortunately no one was hurt and we hope no serious damage was done.

Another green waste bin has gone missing from a house on the Green in Parwich. It probably went on the day of the last collection before the snow. Do keep your eyes open on bin collection days as a number have gone over the last few months.

Having just watched a feature on BBC Midlands Today about the price of heating oil in Derbyshire, I feel compelled to put finger to keyboard. When we first moved to the village ten years ago, a tank of oil cost about £250 – whereas today I was quoted almost £700 for the same volume. I have learned to call around the various suppliers in order to get the best price, but today I was incensed by the responses I received from what I previously thought were reasonable companies – to the extent that I have decided to name names.
I checked the oil at the weekend, and although not needing a full tank, I thought by topping up now, I could help myself and the oil companies by thinking ahead. After all, the weather forecast is not good. I called a few companies, saying that I was not desperate, but if they were planning to visit Parwich before Christmas, could they please top me up with a half tank. Not an unreasonable suggestion, I thought.
Nevertheless, and despite my being a loyal customer in the past, Dove Fuels curtly refused to give me either a price or a delivery date. Peak Oil were polite but expensive, and could not promise a delivery until the new year. They explained that my attempt at foresight was a good idea, but wouldn’t work in practice due to backlogs and tanker breakdown. However, Halso (whom I have never used until now), were excellent, giving me a reasonable price (at least by current standards) and a guaranteed delivery before Christmas.
I guess there is little we can do against what appears to be profiteering in the light of recent weather and international oil prices, but at least we can use this forum to highlight the current issues. If you think you might need oil, just be aware that it’s not a good time right now. I would therefore recommend planning ahead, and shopping around more than usual.

This Christmas we’ve got something for everyone. For those who love tradition, we’ve a festival of Nine Lessons and Carols with readings from the King James Bible (old English) or why not join us for our Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. For folk of all ages, but especially the young at heart, join us for our Crib Service. This less formal service will include four favourite carols and a retelling of the Christmas story, with the help of Lego Mary and Joseph, as children are invited to help build the Church nativity scene (children are invited to come in costume). On Christmas Day, we have two services (Tissington and Alsop-en-le-Dale) both including Holy Communion with the service at Alsop-en-le-Dale being better suited for children.

We have received the following message from Sue H:
Last February some of you attended a coffee morning with a craft and plant sale. I was helping my friend Carol raise over £3,000 for the charity Wellbeing Of Women by doing a sponsored walk in the Himalayas. (I stress that she covered her own flight and other expenses in addition).
She was scheduled to do this walk in April, but the volcanic ash cloud caused a rethink! She was so disappointed, only finding out the day she was due to fly out. Luckily the whole thing was reorganised for October and I’ve had this fantastic account from Carol, which she is happy for me to put on the blog.
Not only did Carol raise this incredible amount for WOW, she also achieved an amazing feat by doing this trek – I know she feels the cold from camping together in England!

Rebecca J writes: We are in the process of applying for a grant to run Pilates classes for the Over 60s in the New Year. We hope to have 2 free taster classes and 10 more that are subsidized. They will take place on a Wednesday afternoon from 2pm – 2.45pm, in the Memorial hall, followed by tea and cakes provided by Val Kirkham. The cost should be in the region of £3/ £4.
The teacher is Tricia Durdey who has 30 years experience of teaching movement to people of all ages and abilities; the last 6 of those as a Pilates teacher. She has worked with people with disabilities and with older adults in care homes and run a number of ‘Falls prevention’ classes.
She says:
“I want people to enjoy moving, to feel comfortable in their bodies, and to move without pain. Pilates should help you to become stronger and more flexible, and improve balance, posture, gait, and breathing.
My Pilates classes for older adults will mostly be devised around exercises that can be done sitting on a chair, or standing with the support of a chair. When people become stronger, or if people are already confident, I will also teach floor-based exercises. The classes will be particularly tailored to suit people’s individual needs.”
The class will be limited to 12 people and we need to have an idea of numbers to make a successful grant application. Please contact Rebecca on 390318 to reserve a place. This information will be available with a reply slip at the Over 60s meal this week.

Due to the popularity of our last ‘Spot The Difference’ feature, we’ve decided to run another one. This time, we’ve made it very very hard.
Click on ‘Continue Reading’ and take a careful look at these two photos. Although they may look identical at first, there is in fact a subtle difference between the top photo and the bottom photo.
Can you spot the difference? We particularly welcome answers in the comments box from our older readers.
HINT: Try putting on your glasses before attempting the exercise. A glass of Christmas sherry might make the difference a little easier to spot!

A big thank you to Emma and Di not forgetting my little helper Alice who kept me organized while demonstrating, a difficult job!
We raised £140.00 for Marie Curie, which is fantastic considering the circumstances.
Thank you to Louise from Bennetts Ashbourne for donating a beautiful Estee Lauder box of goodies, won by Anita who came over from the South of France – well deserved I feel.
The first dem. I have done in two years, I could not have asked for a better location than the hall, it was amazing and I will return – how lucky are we to have such a great place, the envy of all around us.

Dear Resident
We are introducing a new e-forum (email forum) to the Police Community Messaging Service, which will give you the chance to contribute to the setting of priorities in your neighbourhood.
As you may be aware, each of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams hold a meeting every three months to set priorities, offering residents the chance to select what their local police officers and other agencies target.
The aim of our e-forum is to make it easier for you to have a say on priorities, so email and tell us what you would like your team to target.
Your concerns will be sent to the Tissington area Safer Neighbourhood Team and they will discuss all responses at their next forum meeting which will be held on:
Monday 13th December 2010 at 7.30pm
at Parwich Village Hall
Each team works in partnership with local agencies, which include parish, town, district and county councils, housing associations, Derbyshire Youth Service, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Neighbourhood Watch among others, to help keep your area a safe, clean and pleasant place to live.
Priorities can include a wide variety of issues, including anti-social or nuisance behaviour, graffiti or vandalism, speeding, parking or anything which you feel impacts on the quality of life for you and your neighbours.
You are still more than welcome to attend the meeting if you would prefer to speak to officers in person or you can also call our non emergency telephone number, 0345 123 33 33. The old 0845 number will be deactivated from 31st December, so please always use the number highlighted.

Tomorrow’s rubbish collection should be on schedule, but they will only go on roads where the feel it is safe to do so. It is unlikely that collections will be as early as they normally are, because the hydrolics have to be unfrozen before they leave. Can anyone help? We were expecting a small parcel to be delivered for us on Monday 6th at Hallgates, up by the Hall. The courier company says that it was delivered, and signed for on Monday afternoon. But it wasn’t received by us 😦
The only reference they have for name and address of the person that signed is “Rosewood”.
Can anyone shed any light?

A big thank you from us here at Gibbons Bank for all you have been doing to keep us informed and safe over this recent spell of bad weather.
Because of my work commitments and our bookings for concerts etc, we had to stay in Derby/London and we kept ourselves informed about what was going on through the blog. We were only planning to stay away for one day, but we were away for five, so the blog allowed Martin to get home for clean clothes.
So a big thank you for all your efforts, and to all those contributors who have made the blog so very successful.

Just to let everyone know that the Carol Concert on Sunday afternoon at 3pm is still going ahead unless we have any more significant snow falls before then.
We would love to see as many people as possible in Church to enjoy the concert and to join us for warm mince pies and tea and coffee afterwards.
