The Stunner

Parwich features a little bit more in this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph. As always it can be bought from The Sycamore shop or viewed online.

p2 – Parwich Postie makes his last delivery  A lovely article about the service held in the Church for Simon last Sunday with a super picture of Simon, Martin and Bertie.

p3. Clothing store scoops world first – This refers to Pachacuti who have become the first retailer in the world to be given a new classification by the World Fair Trade Organisation.  Two Parwichians – Glynis D and Sue P help to run this very popular establishment.

P10. Creative talent shines through at the Nativity’s.  Parwich Primary School’s Christmas production was ‘Sparkle’, the story of a star chosen from all the others to be the Star of Bethlehem, guiding the shepherds and kings to the birth of Christ.

2009 Advent Calendar – Day 22.

Our resident art critic says:

“Today, Parwich Primary School presents two boldly contrasting images. Note the effective use of bright colours from Kirsten B – whereas the subtle restraint of Charlie S’s more monochromatic palette is most soothing to the eye.”

We think he likes them!

Apologies from our on-line weather station (the links are always displayed in the weather section of the right hand column):

Those of you who have a keen interest in live local weather readings will have noticed a problem with our Parwich weather station data over the past few weeks. Intermittent problems with the hardware have led to some data being unavailable for periods of time, and the station is presently down. We think we have now located the source of the problem, and hope to have the station up and running again shortly.

In the meantime please accept our apologies for the incomplete data – especially over this extreme weather period. I can tell you the temperature in Parwich dipped to around -6 degrees C overnight, and the cold spell looks to continue into next week. Might we be in for a white Christmas?

Thanks.

As always we will have our weekly weather summary from our Weatherman on the Hill tomorrow.

Update on the B5056 Closure

On the 17th November there was a public meeting organised by Derbyshire County Council on the current temporary closure of the B5056.  Our report of that meeting at PARWICH.ORG can be seen by clicking here.

Cllr Simon Spencer committed the Authority to keep residents up to date in writing on the various issues raised that could not be conclusively dealt with in the meeting.

Earlier this month Cllr Chris Jackson (Cabinet Member for Highways & Transport) sent out a letter with their minutes of the meeting and their current action plan from the meeting.  Yesterday they also emailed us this so we could put it on the Blog.  To access these papers click on the following links:

(Note: the minutes and action plan are not exactly as sent to us as the originals contained some full names and addresses which we have removed. Added 16th Dec.)

You can contact the Cllr Chris Jackson directly with any responses or further thoughts or alternatively any comments added below will be forwarded by the PARWICH.ORG Team to Highways.

Thank you to our local Peak Park Ranger for this update on the maintenance of the Weather Way, a fantastic footpath along an ancient holloway going south up from Alsop Lane onto the Flatts.  If you don’t know it, it is well worth a visit. (Click here to find out more about some of the ancient routes near by.)

Photo by Rob F taken in 2000, after the previous restoration

Peak Park Rangers and volunteers have been out recently to try and clear Parwich footpath number 36 that runs south from Flaxdale Holding. This was repaired several years ago but had become overgrown and rather quagmirey.

We cut back much of the tree growth to discover the path is actually quite wide, but we left enough young saplings to form a hedge at the top of the sunken route. We also installed some new wider gates to make it a little easier to get through this area.

About 15 volunteers came out to help with the work and we used the excuse of burning the brash to enjoy a hot baked potato or two in the fire at the end of the day.

Despite this work the path still remains wet (though perhaps this isn’t surprising given the recent wet Autumn). We’ll be keeping an eye on the water level on this path and hopefully improve the drainage at the bottom of the path in the summer when conditions improve.

If you would like to help with conservation tasks like this in the Parwich area feel free to contact me at lynn.burrow@peakdistrict.gov.uk with your contact details. I’ll give you a call next time we are heading in the Parwich direction.

Merry Christmas to you all

Simon our postman will be doing his round for the last time on 2nd January after 11 years delivering the post to the people of Parwich. We could not have wished for a more dedicated and helpful person to deliver our mail. Through rain, snow and shine, Simon has always looked after us with a smile and a wave. We will be very sorry to see him go.

It was wonderful therefore to have the opportunity this afternoon to thank him and his wife Barbara.
