Window Cleaner Wanted

We have received a message from a local resident needing a reliable window cleaner.  Although we list many businesses and services (click here), we don’t as yet have a window cleaner. Let us know if you can help.

A message from Simon.

Dear Friends,

I have now finally retired from the Royal Mail and thought it a good time to write to you all.

Barbara & I would like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave us at the Carol service in December.

I am overwhelmed with the collection you made along with the book showing all your kind wishes. I certainly wasn’t expecting that. I have yet to decide what I’m going to buy.

That you all very much. I wish you all the best and a happy new year.

Kind regards,

Simon

Under the snow

We are all concerned about the state of the roads and the problems with gritting and the now apparent shortage of salting reserved held in the county, but it is what is under the snow that will be a real concern once the snow has gone.  Walking down Dam Lane towards Alsop the road is littered with pot holes, the one photographed is more than 3″ deep and 12″ wide – how many more are there?

This has been reported to Call Derbyshire today and at the same time a request put in to fill the grit bins in the village, but no time schedule has been given.  To ring Call Derbyshire 01629 533085 or 08456 058 058.

The promise by DCC at the Public Meeting on 17th November,  about the filling of holes at the side of this road still hasn’t happened – maybe we need to chase our County Councillor and remind him!

Frozen in time

Pilates Snowed Off

Please note that the Pilates class scheduled for Wednesday 6th January has been cancelled due to the snow. Don’t forget to do those exercises at home!

Parwich Primary School closed today

The school has decided to close today – the decision has just been taken (at 8.20am) given that heavy snow has been predicted for today and has just now started falling.

I fink it were a good night.

We have an abundance of snowy photographs for you today. The following set are from a crisp walk from Parwich to Alsop and back. Hope you enjoy them!

A Snowy Walk Round The Village

Snowy weather is bad news for those who have to travel, but for those who can enjoy the cosiness and the picture postcard scenery, this is a magical time. Many a photographer was abroad today making the most of the excellent light. Here is a gallery of photographs of our beautiful village taken on Sunday morning.

Take care on the roads – Monday

Although today was glorious if you were out walking, it was also like a skating rink in places, especially where the snow has been compacted.  Under the snow it is like sheet ice – certainly on the minor roads.

Do let us know what the Alsop Road, A515 to Ashbourne and Buxton and the road to Longcliffe is like, if you have driven down it today.

Although those last patches of snow mentioned last week finally disappeared from the village, it was not long before a covering was back.  Certainly over the last day or so, the weather and roads have been our most popular topic for posts – and the cold spell is set to continue.

Christmas tree & card recycling

Christmas Trees can be put out with the green bins, between 4th and 29th Jan, if unlike me you can remember which is the green bin day.  Christmas Cards can be take to  collections points (the nearest is Sainsbury’s car park, Ashbourne) between 4th and 31st Jan or M&S  Simply Food.

Can anyone more alert than me put up a comment saying when our next green bin collection is due?

Risk Of Skidding? Is That So?

Following the sprinkling of snow that coated Parwich today, we think this roadsign takes the award for stating the obvious!!
There were however a number of intrepid individuals who took ‘skidding’ to a new level.

What more snow!

Early this morning I opened an email to see this optimistic photo taken yesterday by JF-S, and what a beautiful day it was.  A perfect winter’s day: not a cloud to be seen.  So melting moments, below, seemed appropriate.  Unfortunately the second photo is this lunchtime’s reality.  So as long as you are staying at home, it’s fine and the children are having a fantastic time sledging.  But please do, as the previous post says,  keep the blog up to date with the road conditions.

Today’s snow: how are the roads?

It’s 12:30 on Saturday afternoon, and the snow has been falling for several hours now. If you have any information on the state of the roads around Parwich, Alsop, Ballidon and Pikehall, then please share it with us via the comments box below.

New Year’s Day Get Together

Why not pop along to Church sometime tomorrow between 11am and early pm,  for a few minutes or a couple of hours.   A chance to catch up on the New Year’s news and gossip with some delightful music playing in the background.   If you have any food or drink that you want to use up, (the diet regime starts  tomorrow – so it’s a good chance to remove all that wicked temptation) bring it along and share with others.  If your cupboards are bare, then pop along for a bite in exchange for a donation to help the Church.

Photo Diary Catch up – Weeks 13 & 14

Well the last couple of weeks has seen some freezing snowy weather, not the nicest time to be working on a building site, and certainly not on the roof.    When the temperatures are suitable the block work continues to grow, with some of the walls, both internal and external being built and insulated.   The scaffolding was erected last week to enable the roof  joists to be positioned.   The priority from next week is to continue the block work.

Work to start on B5056 landslip

Work on repairing the B5056 at the landslip just north of the Bentley Fenny Bentley is to start on Monday 11th January. Here is the County Council’s update:

I can confirm that the start date for the Fenny Bentley landslip works is 11 January 2010. Along with nearly all civil engineering contractors and suppliers the Contractor for the works shuts down for a fortnight at Christmas, returning to work on 4 January. During his first week back he will be busy mobilising the plant, equipment and materials required on site. He will also have to arrange his site accommodation, mess and welfare facilities.

On Christmas morning 23 hardy sorts met on The Green and walked over to Tissington and were welcomed by 7 non walkers with coffee, gluvine and nibbles, so giving them the strength to stagger back to Parwich for their Christmas Dinner.

With temperatures dropping below freezing point every night this week, Parwich’s White Christmas was assured.  But now that things seem to be warming up at last, how long will it be until those last patches of snow finally disappear?

New Year’s Day

Now that Christmas is “over” why not celebrate  not only the  New Year, but the new decade in the Church.

“Whole new ball game for John.”

Thanks to Matt H for alerting us to this story (and photo) in the current edition of the Ashbourne News Telegraph.

The man responsible for turning up Ash Wednesday’s Shrovetide ball is in fact Matt’s uncle: John Harrison, who (along with Matt’s late father and aunt Christine) was born and lived for many years in Ballidon.

John is also responsible for making the balls for each year’s Shrovetide matches, spending about 15 hours on the construction of each ball.

There’s more on next year’s Shrovetide matches here and here.

  7. The Rev Beetham, thought to be vicar of Parwich in the 1770s, following a run in with some unruly parishioners took as text for his sermon “And I caught certain of them and smote them and plucked off their hair and made them swear by God”. What village celebration provided the setting for this fracas?
  8. What in Parwich opened in 1982 and closed in 2000?

Thank you to Parwich & District Local History Society for these questions taken from some of their previous Quizzes.

The Christmas Trees in the Church

There is a wonderful display of Christmas trees in the Church, decorated by the different societies, groups and individuals in the village.  An enormous amount of effort has gone into this and if you haven’t already been in to have a look, please do.

Remember it is the Crib Service on Thursday at 4pm, everyone is extremely welcome.
