Thank you to Mani from Germany for this photo af a pine tree. Note: this tree is around 40 years old, and has been in gardens as far apart as the Outer Hebrides and London, with its last 12 years here in Parwich. Let’s hope it spends its next 40 years here as well.

There has been debate as to whether we should use the PDF format for information accessible through posts on the site. PDFs have the advantage that we do not need to copy and reformat the information into posts and for some contributors such as Parish Councils it ensures official information remains in the format they agreed. Also use of PDFs means the information can be printed out by the reader in the form intended regardless of the web browser they use.
Most computers now are supplied with PDF reader software already loaded, alternatively relevant software can be downloaded for free from Adobe (click here to download Adobe Reader). However some people find the need to switch into a different format irritating or even confusing.
What are your thoughts?

If anyone is interested, Debbie W has a chest of drawers free for collection.
The chest is made of oak, and it needs either painting or stripping. It is currently painted white – but the paint is chipped, so it needs some attention.
Nothing fancy, but it is good quality, post war ‘service furniture’. The chest is 71 cm high, 99 cm long and 43 cm deep. There are three drawers.
To arrange a viewing, please call Debbie on 568.

We have a new site manager, Rob Osborne, who will be looking after things during this project. He will be on site most of the time. A specialist firm is just completing the removal of all the asbestos from the old hall and we should get the all clear today, this will mean that the demolition should start by Wednesday at the latest. Obviously during the demolition phase there will be increased activity on the site, with more vehicle movements as the rubble is removed. Mains electricity is being established today, our thanks to the Parwich Legion for facilitating this. Thanks, Ben.

The temporary closure of the B5056 at Curzon Lodge north of Longcliffe will be for longer than anticipated, because of the condition of the existing road surface is poorer that expected requiring replacement of a larger area.
During the closure traffic going north will need to divert towards Brassington at the Longcliffe crossroads, then along Manystones Lane over Carsington Pastures and onto the Via Gellia (A5012) by Ryder Point. Alternatively cars can go the other way at the crossroads towards Aldwark reaching the Via Gellia west of Grange Mill.
The contractors anticipate that next week’s closure will be from AM Tuesday 6th to PM Friday 9th of October. We will update if there is any further information.

Please note that in addition to the closure at Fenny Bentley there will a further planned temporary closure of the B5056 at Longcliffe. The closure will probably be for one day sometime late next week, when we have more detailed information we will pass it on. This will be by Curzon Lodge, north of the crossroads at Longcliffe.
Highways are in contact with the local quarries and lorries will be diverted towards Brassington at the Longcliffe crossroads, then along Manystones Lane over Carsington Pastures and onto the Via Gellia (A5012) by Ryder Point.
Added 1st Oct 2009: the closure will be for longer than expected see post above.

It’s a quiet week for stories of local interest this week in the Stunner. Available as always online or in the Sycamore, I could only find one local mention – of an application for planning permission for a lean-to in Pikehall.

According to Wikipedia: “Abstinence is a voluntary restraint from indulging a desire or appetite for certain activities that are widely experienced as giving pleasure.”
Now that our Memorial Hall fund-raising drive is reaching its final stages, perhaps it’s time to think once again about ways in which we can help to raise additional funds for the project.
With this in mind, here’s one possible idea: a sponsored “Abstinence Week”, in which some of us will pledge to give up some of our favourite indulgences, in return for donations (from friends, relatives, colleagues, and anyone else outside the village who might be feeling supportive) to the building fund.
For example: if you enjoy a drink, then why not give up alcohol for a week? Or if you’re a smoker, could you be persuaded to give up tobacco for seven days? For younger people, how about pledging to stay away from sweets and fizzy drinks?
There are loads of other possibilities. Ladies could spend a week “au naturel“, without using make-up or other beauty products. Gentlemen could go without shaving. Internet addicts could refrain from surfing the web. Telly addicts could switch off their TV sets. Game players could shut down their Playstations or Xboxes. Or perhaps users of “colourful language” could promise not to swear!
These are just a few suggestions. But before we commit to organising anything, we’d like to hear from you.
If you had to give something up for a week, what would you choose? Please let us know in the comments box!

As a result of the removal of an ash tree at the Memorial Hall, there are now some logs available. They are tucked just past the old substation on the right hand side in the corner, outside of the cage. Please help yourselves, donations always welcome. Thanks Ben.

Telephone directory deliveries will be taking place in will be taking place in out area from 6th October over a 2-3 weeks period. Whilst delivery agents are advised not to leave these directories on view from the street, it is likely there will be instances of books being left outside which may be seen as a sign that a property may be empty. If you go on holiday or are away consider having an arrangement with a trusted neighbour to keep an eye open for these signs to help protect your property.

Sandra and Rebecca would like to thank everyone who baked cakes, donated raffle prizes and came to their Macmillan coffee morning. Also thanks to those who could not come and sent donations. We raised a fantastic £305! If you missed it, there is still time to give us your donations to this worthy cause which may well help us or someone we know suffering from cancer in the future.

A recent Office of Fair Trading (OFT) report was pointed out to us by several local residents and had already been drawn to the attention of Parwich Parish Council and the Memorial Hall Committee. Although there appear to be no negative implications for the Memorial Hall rebuild, we felt it was important to report in full.
On Tuesday of this week the OFT issued a press release entitled ‘Construction firms fined for illegal bid-rigging’ summarising the completion of a three and a half year investigation.
They fined some 103 construction companies mainly for ‘cover pricing’, that is where companies entering competitive tendering submitted deliberately high bids to ensure an agreed company gained the contract. There were also a number of instances where building firms successfully gaining the contract, paid cash sums to ‘unsuccessful’ competitors, by means of false invoices. The events reported took place between 2000 and 2006.
A significant number of companies co-operated with the OFT investigation and consequently had their fines reduced by between 35 and 65%. It is recognised in the Report that these practices have been widespread in the industry. Indeed the OFT had evidence relating to a considerably larger number of companies nationally, but chose to focus their investigation on the East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside.
The report further states that the companies fined may now have more reliable procedures in place than other companies not subject to investigation. The OFT and OCG (Office of Government Commerce) advise that the named companies should not be excluded from bidding for public projects on the following grounds:
- The Parties have received significant financial penalties appropriate to the infringement findings in the Decision
- It would be wrong automatically to assume that construction companies that are not named in the Decision have not also been involved in bid rigging
- As a result of the OFT’s investigation, the Parties can be expected to be particularly aware of the competition rules and the need for compliance and, if anything, are more likely to be compliant
- Many of the Parties have cooperated fully with the OFT’s investigation and a significant proportion have taken measures to introduce or reinforce formal compliance programmes and to ensure that their staff are aware of their competition law obligations.
The contractors for our new Memorial Hall, Wildgoose Construction Ltd were cited by the OFT as being involved is some 7 cases, between April 2001 and July 2003. However, they had stopped this practise some time before the start of the OFT investigation. Wildgoose, though fined, had their total reduced by 50% (the second largest reduction) as a result of their co-operation in the investigation.
The OFT report gives us no grounds to doubt either Wildgoose’s current trading practices or their conduct in relation to our project. Indeed the OFT goes further saying those companies who co-operated with their investigation are now likely to have more reliable policies for public tendering. Continue Reading »

Last weekend we received a letter from County Councillor Chris Jackson, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transport. The letter, sent to the relevant Parish Councils and residents along the B5056, gives an update on the County Council’s position on the landslip on the B5056 at Fenny Bentley. Today we got permission from Cllr Jackson to reproduce the letter in full, so click here to see it in pdf format.
The letter summarises the history of the landslip and indicates
the preferred option, which will provide the least risk of further road movement, is the provision of a reinforced concrete masonry faced retaining wall supported on piles extending below the slip plane.
The time-scale is
Subject to Cabinet Members approvals and the securing of funding, it is expected that the design and contract document will be completed by early to mid-October, followed by a required tender period of four weeks with tender evaluation and acceptance a further two weeks. It is expected that it will take the successful contractor some four weeks to mobilise his operations. … … … . Whilst it may be possible that the design, procurement and mobilisation programme could be reduced by a few days, it is unlikely that works on site will commence before the New Year.
At this time, the anticipated contract period is approximately 20 weeks, but this could well be influenced by the vagaries and uncertainties of the climate during the winter months. Continue Reading »

If you have a log burner and have bought yourself a briquette maker to make firelighters out of old newspapers, here is my top tip. Drying them out in the top oven of the Aga is inadvisable as they may dry out more quickly than you think and then spontaneously set on fire as you open the oven door, giving you quite a surprise and smoking the whole house out and making your hair and clothes smell as if you have been in a house fire.
