Parwich’s multi-talented sports leviathon Roberto Buntingo has allegedly been spotted in another prestige sporting event. Buntingo employed perfect tactics. He chose to stick with the pack for most of the race – eating his packup and whistling Whitesnake tunes as he went. Many could not believe how effortlessly he climbed the mountains of the notorious Mont Blanc stage. One unkind journalist said he thought he could see Roberto’s braces hooked onto one of the upfront racers, but we know it was his indomitable spirit and unparalleled toughness.
Then it happened. An early breakaway at Cromford saw the Pike Hall pedallist beat eight riders up the gruelling hill. Deadly rival Collinio Simmsio almost caught him at the Carsington chicane but in the end Roberto powered through to claim the coveted yellow jersey.

Who knows what sporting achievement RB will attempt next???

Following the recent remarks about our most intrepid local sportsman, you may be interested to see the attached photo taken during last winter’s sporting season. Early preparation for the next winter olympics. Roberto attributes part of his carefully thought out diet and fitness plan to the wonderful cakes supplied to him at the recent flower festival. They are currently seeing him through this week of advanced training.
Thank you to Colin B for sending in this remarkable photograph.

Congratulations to Rebecca for having correctly chosen my name. I raised over £100 for Project Parwich. Thank you to Eve from Colchester for drawing my name, Sarah, while she was looking round the Flower Festival this afternoon. Eve and her husband are on holiday in Parwich staying at Croft Cottage for the twelfth time.

Here is Marion F-S’s comment on the Parwich Flower Festival together with some of John’s photos to give you a taste. Do take the opportunity to go tomorrow afternoon 1pm to 5pm (Sunday 6th June):
I have just come back from the flower festival in the church, completely bowled over by the beautiful displays, the wonderful scent of roses, soothing background music and – of course – the welcoming coffee and delicious home made cakes.
The first surprise is the porch, complete with garden gate and hastily abandoned galoshes – obviously some keen gardener (someone looking for an allotment, perhaps?) has taken it over. They’ve been suddenly called away, but doubtless will soon be back…

Six weeks ago an article was posted onto the blog about Jill’s just-born pups… this is now stage two! Charlie, Archie, Lottie, Lochan and Daisy turned six weeks old yesterday and are all well…and rather lively! All of them have found new homes to go to when they turn eight weeks old or so but until then it’ll be Jill looking after them – which brings me onto another plea for newspaper from her! So if you have any old newspapers she would be very grateful if you could pass them on to her – five puppies just seem to use up so much!

One of the best things about living in Parwich is the wildlife that surrounds us. The village becomes a hive of activity from early Spring and sometimes the chorus of birdsong can be almost deafening. During the month of June, a family of Chiffchaffs (or maybe Willow Warblers) decided to make a nest in a climbing rose on a nearby Parwich wall. The nest is right by the road so this poor family had milk lorries, dust carts and even the Oddfellows Parade passing within yards of them!
By early June, Mum was on the nest, looking out suspiciously and hoping nobody noticed her:

Sunday evening sees a special service when the Bishop of Repton will dedicate the new stained-glass Annunciation window in memory of Mrs & Miss Graham and the replica Tympanum. The theme of the service is one thousand years of Christian art.
6pm St Peter’s Church, Parwich
Dedication Service
All are welcome.
This is for all the community, not just the regular church attenders, and it is hoped that as many as possible will come to remember the Grahams, to enjoy the flowers and the history of our parish church, and to support the future of this fine building.

This was the response I received when a work colleague asked me what I would be doing this evening. “Oh, I said, just a bit of ferret racing”.

Our traditional Friday Race Night at the Legion was well up to scratch. Local ferret breeders battled to find the finest ferret in the Thoroughbred Ferret Furlong – try saying that 10 times quickly! Local jockeys competed in the Legion Grand National, egged on by their sponsors and punters.
This evening marked the end of a wonderful Wakes week. Most of us are exhausted and need to go now for a bit of a lie down. Never mind lads and lasses….it’ll soon be next years Wakes!

Deep in the bowels of Carnival Committee Headquarters, fevered brainstorming led to a radical change in location and setup for this year’s ball race. Light, flimsy plastic balls were jettisoned in favour of sturdy tennis balls – Andy Murray no longer needs them! Gone also were the low-tech crates used last year to hold and release the balls. This year’s solution was…….a digger!!!! Never let it be said that the Committee doesn’t think big!

Our latest roving reporter Nia is back by popular request:
Fast on the heels of Children’s sports night comes another nerve testing night for parents. First we have to start carbo loading the evening meal for 4 days beforehand and on the night it is a fine balance of eating the right sort of food (slow energy release….) at least 2hrs before they set off. Try getting an over excited child to eat at 5pm when all they want to do is practise their sprint starts and elbow barges!
There is now a great entry from the infant class with the girls all having `gentleman’s` agreements to run together. The boys have a slightly more win at all costs approach. The junior class have a good idea of each others’ potential and have their eyes firmly on the opposition. With no money but fabulous trophies and shields going to the top 3 local boys and girls there is a lot at stake.
The starting line up was buzzing with excitement. Surely Alexander D must be 17 by now or he has been down the gym a lot as no 14 yr old should be that tall and long legged! Little girls holding hands and swearing to help each other ascend the big hill. An interesting collection of running clothes was on show. The full well turned out runner look was on full show, the `I’ve just got back from school and I’m not changing` look made a real come back and then there were the carefully put together racing princess outfits.
On the word GO the children surged forward, trampling over each other in the rush to get to the front. Worried parents were already questioning their parenting skills as they watched their offspring whiz down the road and head ever upwards as the rain clouds gathered menacingly overhead. What better way to mark the 500th post on PARWICH.ORG, than with these images of Parwich in the morning mist?
The pictures were taken at around 5:00 this morning by “early bird” Mike G, from his vantage point on Gibbons Bank.
As the sequence progresses, you can see the first rays of morning sunlight creeping across the valley.
By the final image, the mist has started to fade, and you can see the tree tops beginning to poke through. (Best seen if you click to enlarge.)
Thanks to Mike for getting up so early, and capturing a scene that many of us would never normally get to see.

Open Gardens and Flower Festival
Sat 5th & Sun 6th July
11am – 5pm – entry £4
With more than 20 gardens to visit, a flower festival, an art exhibition and a bell ringing competition there is plenty to keep you occupied. Refreshments are available at the Legion Hall between 11am – 2pm.
Brassington is an attractive old village situated on a south facing hilltop and surrounded by spectacular countryside. The fine Norman church of St James overlooks the village where there are some lovely old houses and pretty cottages set amongst narrow streets. Once an important centre for lead mining, there are still many remnants of the old industry to be seen in the area.

Dogs, two ferrets and a cat … this was the line up for this years Pet Show on Thursday. Many people came to the show, bringing along their pets (as well as their musical skills in some cases, entering the ‘best singing dog’ class!). Others came along to watch the fun as the entrants were judged on their carrot eating speed, size, resemblance to owner, whisker length and much more! Overall, everyone had a good time – that includes both pets and owners … roll on next year!

This post is just to say ‘No news yet’. At the open consultation meeting on the 6th May, the Officers suggested the final draft might be submitted to the July Planning Committee meeting, however the agenda for this meeting has gone on-line today and we are not included. Fortunately the rain held off for last night’s strongest man competition, which was particularly well attended. This year’s events were different to those from last year; they were definitely not for the fainthearted and included:
- Farmers walk.
- Car lift.
- Hold tight.
- Rotate on this.
- Log pull.
The competition was sponsored by Marshall Builders and local plumber Rob Keeling. The events ran smoothly, if not effortlessly on the part of the competitors! Many thanks to Shaun Marshall, Paul Cooper and Rob Keeling, who had clearly put a lot of thought and effort in to the preparation and organisation of the event.
There were nine entrants, many new to the competition, spanning a range of ages and professions. Despite these differences, the thing they all had in common was that they were all ready and willing to take up the five challenges. This year’s competitors (in no particular order) are listed below, along with a group photo taken before the action began:
- James Staley
- Carl Alsop
- Peter Carrington (Posh Pete)
- Tim Ryder
- John Etches
- Robert Bunting
- Rob Staley
- Rob Spencer
- John Hotchin (Hotch)

When Roger Graham visited Parwich Church last week to see our fine new stained-glass window, he spotted a mistake. Has anyone else noticed it? If not go to the Church (or check out our earlier post) to see if you can.
Fortunately the error does not impair the beauty of the window, and so far Roger is the only person we know of that has spotted it. We do not know if the window is to remain as it is or have the mistake corrected.
In Islamic art there should always be an imperfection, so as not to rival the perfection of the Divine.

Parwich Methodist Chapel is due to be auctioned by Fidler & Taylor this evening (Thursday 3rd July) at 7pm at the Green Man Hotel in Ashbourne, unless sold before by private negotiation.

We understand the guide price is £40,000, though interested parties are advised to discuss any possible change of use with the Peak District National Park Authority’s planing service in advance.
(Note added Friday 4th July: the Chapel was sold for £76,000.)

Wednesday marked another milestone in the short but eventful history of PARWICH.ORG, as the site received over 1000 page views in a single day.
For a community with only around 500 on its electoral roll, that’s pretty good going!
Those of us on the editorial team always knew that Wakes Week would be a busy time for the blog, but this week’s figures have surpassed our wildest expectations.
Our thanks to everyone who has supported the site, both within the community and beyond it. (We have regular readers as far away as the USA, and we welcome them one and all.)

On Wakes Saturday evening, Amy (aged 6) lost her “Next” camouflage-coloured hoody – probably somewhere at the fairground.
If anyone happens to have picked it up, I should be very grateful if you would either hand it to anyone at Parwich school to pass onto her, or call me on 474.

OK, so this is a long shot – but does anyone has a vinyl or cassette copy of the album Val Doonican Rocks, But Gently lurking in their attics? Although long since deleted (and unavailable on CD), this album not only topped the charts in early 1968, but it even knocked The Beatles’ classic Sergeant Pepper from the Number One position – proving that you should never underestimate the power of a crooner in a cardigan !

If you do own a copy, then please contact Mike Atkinson at parwich@hotmail.co.uk, as I would very much like to borrow it for a few days, in order to assist a friend’s research for a project.
As an added incentive, I will also make a donation to Project Parwich upon receipt of the album.

FOUND – 1 Training shoe (right)
Location – Dodds Dill , Monsdale Lane, Parwich
Time – 9.30am 2/7/08.

QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED.
Have we lost a Hill Race competitor?
Is it an SOS?
Where is the other half?
Did he/she hop round on one leg or carry on barefoot (RHS).
Why are lost shoes and socks always single and not in pairs?
Cheers,
Mike G
