Stuart and Rosemary Chambers went to support Tom Chambers (aka Dr Sam Strachan of Holby City) at the BBC studios, Sheppards Bush in London for the Saturday Show and the results show on the Sunday 21st September.
At 4.30pm, having been in rehearsals since 9am, Tom is looking surprisingly relaxed – but maybe not.
Tom was a bundle of nerves as he and Camilla, his gorgeous Danish dance partner, were ‘first out of the trap’. We were delighted but so nervous for him too, a very live audience with demanding judges!
Rosemary and I were joined by three prominent members of the Holby City cast, Michael Spence, Daisha and Maddy Young, they were so supportive. Maddy and Michael gave some superb off camera tv interviews which we should see over the next few weeks. The cast of Holby City will attend the show as regularly as they can, maybe we’ll see Michael Spence dancing in 2010.
We had such a great time in the BBC bar before and after the show, chatting until near midnight with other contestants in particular a hot favourite being Rachel Stevens of S Club 7. I can’t tell you how exciting and exhilarating it was, gorgeous dresses to look at and lots of other celebrities to meet and see – a bbc bar to use too – I would recommend the evening to anyone, try and get a ‘wild invitation’ via the bbc.co.uk Strictly Come Dancing website. It’s a long day and it’s true you do see more on the TV but the vibrant atmosphere of a live show with the movement of boom cameras, technicians and all the contestants… Fantastic.

I knew I was in trouble when I woke to the sound of Cher from my bedside radio….yes I KNOW our love won’t pay the rent but neither will it get a tennis tournament and end of season BBQ organised…..
Glynis (aka Drummond G) called, she’ll get rolls, beer and stuff, the Linnells are on sausages (obviously) and Colin B is organising the tennis; I get to clean and scrub two rusty dirty barbeques and plan some stuff for the annual dinner, my cup overfloweth.
All ready by 1pm. 24 highly motivated players were confronted by yet another cunning competition format, this time devised by Colin B……….And when I’m sad, you’re a clown …….. ….24 players – 3 Drummonds, 3 Smiths, 3 Linnells, 3 Beesleys, 2 Coates, 2 Yarletts, 2 Watsons, a single Fentem, a Chadfield (well done Sandra!) a Bunting, the vicar, a bloke called Richard and me – making 12 couples…I got you to hold my hand……
The Peak District National Park Authority are planning a series of visits to Peak District villages. The first visit will be to Hartington on 30th September, when the Chair, Narendra Bajaria, and the Chief Executive, Jim Dixon, will be meeting members of the Hartington community. Parwich is included in the list of villages to be visited, but we do not have a date yet. As well as the Sycamore Inn’s award, last week also saw a young Parwich man receiving well earned recognition. At last Friday’s Ashbourne Young Farmers’ dinner dance, Ben C. was named as ‘the Most Promising Young Farmer of the Year’.
Well done Ben from all at PARWICH.ORG. This is especially significant as you were up against others who had the advantage of living on a family farm.
It is positive to see so many people adding comments. As well as approaching 80,000 hits, the number of comments so far is in the 980s. Who will make the 1,000th comment?

This Friday (September 26th) sees Parwich participate again in the largest coffee morning in the world. It is of course the annual coffee morning for Macmillan, Cancer Support. Please join in at Sandra C’s anytime from 9am-noon. Cake Stall & Raffle, with prizes and cakes gratefully received.
What a delightful service it was today at the Harvest Festival, a joint event with St Peter’s Church and Parwich Methodists. The church was beautifully decorated, every window sill full of autumn fruits and vegetables.
Harvest Supper. The produce will be auctioned tomorrow night at the Harvest Supper. We are delighted that all the tickets have been sold. We look forward to seeing you at 6.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Any further produce, fruit, veg, flowers and cakes will be gratefully received because we are a little short of things for the auction.

Tom and Camilla were the first to take the floor on this evening’s Strictly Come Dancingwith a ChaCha. The judges’ score of 28 puts them currently in second place behind Austin Healey and Erin Boag, however to make sure they are not in the dance off they still need our votes. If you cast your minds back to July, many of you will have filled in Sponsorship Forms for Denise’s Skydive in aid of the Derby City General Hospital Breast Cancer Clinic.
On 19 July we went out to Langar airfield (between Nottingham and Grantham – and the home of the British Parachute Schools Skydiving Centre). The winds blew and blew, and if a jump had been made Denise would probably have landed in the Netherlands. We waited all day, and eventually returned disconsolate (to drown our sorrows in a pub in Markeaton).
Since then a combination of dreadful weather and domestic problems intervened to make a jump impossible, but on Tuesday 16 September we were told that Wednesday weather would be ideal – we should get there as early as possible. So we turned up at 10.30 – only to find mist and a very low cloud-base which would make tandem jumps for starters unsafe. The day went on and on.
An amazing £170 was raised at the Church Kneeler Coffee Morning today, this also included the sale one of the kneelers. It was disappointing to see so few people supporting a village event, but for those there it was a lovely opportunity to catch up with friends. Thank you especially to Helen & Ian who opened their home up despite the damage caused by the floods, and thank you to all who donated, supported and helped.
The Sycamore Inn is opening early this evening at 6pm so that those who want can come and cheer Tom along collectively. There is an extra large plasma TV especially for tonight. ‘Strictly’ starts at 6-10pm so you will need to be prompt to get your drinks and settle down for the start.

The competition gets underway on tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1 at 6-10pm (Saturday 20th Sept). This week sees the male celebrities competing. All of us here at PARWICH.ORG intend to be totally impartial, showing no favouritism at all in our all out campaign to see Tom Chambers as the 2008 winner. Vote for Tom this Saturday evening. The results will be announced on Sunday’s show (this week the results show is at 8-00pm Sunday 21st Sept).
How to vote:
Strictly Come Dancing will be broadcast on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturdays the celebrities and their partners will dance for the judges scores and your vote. When the programme finishes on Saturday night viewers will be able to continue to vote until the lines close that evening at 9pm. Being one of the three men that attended this talk, I can uncategorically say that those of you who did not go on Thursday evening missed an excellent talk and some incredible photos. Clare Shea-Simonds, an experienced athlete, has recently won a European silver medal for Triathlon. She and her husband, with some 80 other westerners and Nepalese, entered last year’s Everest Marathon, and Parwich WI reaped the benefit of having her mother on their committee.
Amazing though the challenge of a marathon starting near Everest Base Camp at 17,000 feet is, the challenge of walking to the start is as impressive. Described as the worlds most impressive race, it has been run 12 times since 1987. Clare talked of Nepal, the poverty (the average income is around £125 a year) and the people. Continue Reading »

Yesterday the Planning Inspectorate over turned Derbyshire Dales District Council’s refusal of a commercial wind farm on Carsington Pastures overlooking Carsington Water. West Coast Energy now have the go ahead to build four large wind turbines. Details of the appeal can be seen at the District Council Website and the Planning Inspector’s decision can be see at their website (with a bit of searching).
It is perhaps surprising that this got the go ahead in such a conspicuous and archaeologically important site, though the Government is working to facilitate the planning process for alternative energy installations. Just outside the National Park’s boundary it is interesting to speculate how this will impact on the PDNPA’s reluctance to allow even small domestic wind turbines.

A conversation between several people over a garden wall resulted in us being asked to do the following post:
People have had varied responses from their different insurance companies in relation to the rain/flood damage of the other weekend. Some feel they have had a very rapid response and an exemplary service, but others have concerns. One household had a very rapid initial response but now feel they are left not knowing what is going to happen; another feels their contents insurers are trying to shift the reponsibility to the buildings insurer for what should be contents leaving them falling between the two stools.
It has been suggested that comments here on the Blog may help those less happy with the service they are getting. If people that are happy with their insurers say so in the comments section below, this will give those unhappy with theirs something to cite to their own insurers, or in the worst case the name of alternative insurance companies to change to when their policy comes up for renewal. Those people unhappy with their insurers may be able to use comments on the Blog to put the pressure of adverse publicity on them to come up with the goods. Continue Reading »
Ben would like to extend his thanks to all those who have shown concern over his pile. He is delighted to say that it has now gone but it’s disappearance has taken a couple of months and involved considerable effort and a certain amount of pain. He has coped well with the friendly “jibes”, but was disappointed that no-one took the bit between their teeth and got stuck in.
Its been a fairly quiet month on our area. The downpour we suffered in the early part of September kept officers extremely busy around Ashbourne, and some of our villages did suffer from flooding.
We’ve had little crime. At around 2100 hours, 12th September 2008, damage was caused to a house door in Kniveton village by an unknown person banging on it.
We had another collision on the A515, near to the Rakes Lane junction, Tissington. A BMW overturned and the four occupants were lucky to come out virtually uninjured. I have submitted a report to Derbyshire County Council, via HQs, asking them to consider further possible improvements for this particular bend.

The Peak Park Authority are holding a number of workshops ‘across‘ the National Park for residents to have their say in the planning and management of the National Park. These workshops will ask the questions:
• What makes our area’s landscape special for us?
• Whether the authority’s understanding of our area’s landscape and the current land use is accurate?
• Our suggestions for future planning and management of the landscape?
The ‘nearest‘ two to us are:
• Wednesday 15 October, 7pm to 9pm – Warslow Village Hall, Cheadle Road, Warslow
• Saturday 18 October, 10am to 1pm – Peak District National Park Authority offices, Aldern House, Baslow Road, Bakewell

The day dawned – surprisingly brightly given the recent dampness.
This was the penultimate event of the Tennis Club’s year, the climax of their competitive year, the pinnacle of competitive ambition, the epitome of competitive standards. At stake was the honour of having your name in gold leaf on the pavilion honours board for eternity.
This is a day for finely tuned athletes, the light of foot, the stern of heart, those who care and the masochists who routinely subject themselves to ritual humiliation on an annual basis. This is not a day for the lily-livered, for those who play for enjoyment or those with the good sense to recognise their limitations. Today we were gladiators!
There were two competitions – ‘one for the ladies’ and ‘one for the gentlemen’.
The W.I. have a talk and pictures by Claire and Duncan Shea-Simonds who completed the Everest Marathon in November 2007, at the Memorial Hall on Thursday 18th September at 8pm, everyone is welcome.
Tickets are now available for a Raclette Evening to be held on the evening of Saturday 11th October in aid of Project Parwich.
The evening kicks off at 7.30pm at Rookery House. Tickets cost £10 for a light raclette supper and the first glass of something enjoyable. Additional drinks will be on sale too!
