Great Coffee Morning

There must have been between 40-50 of us gathered in The Sycamore for the Coffee Morning. It was a super morning and a great opportunity to catch up on local news and just have a good gossip. Janet had a fire roaring and the cakes supplied by many and organised by Marian were a treat to see and even nicer to try. They surpass many a tea room. Steve kept the coffee flowing and I am sure that there are many people to thank. So thank you to everyone who came & for Janet for hosting the event – we look forward to a repeat of this event.

Funeral of Annie Steeples

The funeral of Annie Steeples of Smithy Close, Parwich, will take place at St. Peter’s church on Thursday 24th April at 11.45 am in St. Peter’s church.

Annie grew up in Camberwell, London, before meeting her husband Frank during the Second World War.  Frank had grown up in Parwich and brought her back there, apparently telling her that she could expect to find Woolworths and similar shops in the village.  They had two children, Frank and Karen, and four grandchildren.  Frank died in 1991.

Annie was 88 when she died.

St. George, Patron Saint of England

Today, 23rd April, is St George’s Day. We are not aware of any particular celebrations taking place in our villages, though next year the Odd Fellows and the Legion may be marking the occasion. However, PARWICH.ORG could not let the day pass without a post.

When checking with the Team if I could have this post, the Vicar responded:

I always find it rather ironic, given the affection in which the English hold St George, that he is thought to have been from what is now Turkey. Of course St. Andrew of Scotland was from Palestine . so perhaps we should all adopt a real British saint, like David! But maybe, on the other hand, St. George’s origins should help us in our attempts to build better Christian-Muslim relations …”

The infamous school for ‘young ladies’, St T…’s , is once again facing dire financial crisis. While unorthodox headmistress Camilla Fritton (Rupert Everett) struggles to deal with the new Education Minister Geoffrey Thwaites’ tireless advances and his unyielding objective to transform her chaotic environs into a ‘respectable’ ladies college, the responsibility for saving St T…’s from its creditors falls to the anarchic pupils. The fearless girls gather together a motley crew of teachers, associates, and the rest of the school’s ungovernable and uninhibited pranksters, who, using their wit, sass, determination and ingenuity attempt to pull off the heist of the century and save the school from impending bankruptcy. A RIOT! (more…)

Parwich sport has never had it so good, as dozens of fans crowded together supporting this impressive occasion. The ground was hard & the conditions were cold but we witnessed drama, mental resilience & the breathless physical fitness of so many.

We may not have had the hordes of celebrities who were present last night at Calzaghe’s fight, we were just more selective choosing Dr Sam Strachan (aka Tom Chambers) to open the occasion. One of his more memorable & very astute statements was “may every ball be in” as he manfully cut the recycled red ribbon to the hard play area. Di who opened the proceeding stated that she “particularly enjoyed the kiss” from heart throb ‘Sam’ of Holby City fame.

Three teams were competing for the accolade of champion of champions, the single sex team of the Netball players and the mixed teams of footballers & tennis players.

What a fantastic night we have just had in The Legion, as the evening progressed the numbers swelled.  Paul Curtis can really sing – he entertained us with a wide range of songs & it was brilliant.  If you weren’t there you seriously missed out – and what a super way of supporting The Legion, a real local venue.

Thanks to everyone who organised it.

A presentation by the vicar

Residents of Parwich should have received notification today of the details of the review of the Conservation Area.

The Peak District National Park Authority’s draft appraisal of Parwich Conservation Area is now available on-line at http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/parwich-appraisal/. Copies are also available for public viewing at the Authority’s Offices at Aldern House in Bakewell, in the Sycamore Inn Parwich or through Parwich Parish Council.

The consultation period on this document runs from Monday 14th April to Friday 23rd May 2008. If you want to comment to the Peak Park Authority either email sue.adam@peakdistrict.gov.uk, or write to the Historic Buildings Team at the Peak District National Park Authority’s headquarters, or attend the public meeting at 4-00pm to 7-30pm on Tuesday 6th May in Parwich Memorial Hall. All comments must be sent in by 5-00pm on Friday 23rd May 2008. If you have any questions about this review phone the Historic Buildings Team on 01629 816200.

Parwich Village Action Group urges as many people as possible to look at the draft appraisal and to attend the public meeting. They also feel it is important for us all to share our views with each other, which you can do either by commenting here on PARWICH.ORG or by coming along to the informal Environment Group meeting at 8pm on Monday 21st April at the Sycamore Inn. It is vital that we are happy with the appraisal as we will have to live with its implementation over the next twenty or so years.

Sharing Parwich History 2

The informal meeting at the Sycamore last night went well. Some eight of us met and looked through a collection of press cuttings and some photographs taken by the Ashbourne Telegraph, from the last fifty years. However by the end of the evening the group had been swelled by others who had come in for a drink, but were interested in the cuttings.

We did have some discussion about how a wider audience could get to see these materials, and the archives held by the Local History Society. There is not enough material for anything on the scale of the 2002 exhibition in the Church, but it would be interesting for villagers to know what is there. Nowhere in the village is currently suitable for a permanent display, but does have anyone suggestions for something more temporary?

Dates for your diary:

7-30pm Thursday 8th May an illustrated talk on “History of Cromford Mill” at the Memorial Hall (£1 members, £2 non-members).

7-30pm Wednesday 4th June an evening tour of Brassington, meet in front of the Miner’s Arms (no charge).  Contact Peter Trewhitt tel. 287 with a rough idea of numbers.

7pm Wednesday 11th June an evening tour of Parwich, laid on for Wetton Local History Group but others welcome to join in, meet in the Sycamore Inn car park (no charge).

Sharing Parwich history

Don’t forget the History Society are holding an informal meeting at the Sycamore tomorrow (Thursday 10th April) at 8pm in the back room. The idea is to come along and share any information you have or memories you have or share any topics you want to find out more about. The idea is to explore recent history: your life time, your parents’ life time and your grandparents’ life time.

We have set no specific agenda as we want to see what interests the people who come along. However if no one has any specific topics in mind we have several fall backs, including local working life, the carbide shed and the Methodist Chapel. This is a new venture for the History Society, but if successful we will hold more such events.

Report from AGM – March 26th 2008

The Carnival Committee held a successful & well attended AGM in the Royal British Legion last Wednesday, March 26th.

Chairman Denis Laycock welcomed a full complement of existing committee members together with newcomers Sharon Swindell (making a welcome return after an absence of several years) and Louise Laycock. He was able to report on a successful Wakes Week last year. In spite of adverse weather our only losses to planned events had been the Village market on Wakes Saturday and children’s sports on the Monday. We had certainly been more fortunate than many villages organising similar events. Other events druing the year had included a successful November 5th bonfire and the annual ‘Carols on the Green’, both of which had been well supported.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of committee members and several long standing supporters who always make themselves available when needed. We owe them all a big ‘thank you’.

Treasure Roger Cundy was able to report a satisfactory bank balance. The accounts – kindly audited by Peter Rawlins – showed that Wakes had make a slight profit, due to an excellent collection of £190 on the Saturday, and the very successful ball race. Profits go towards the village bonfire and the carol evening.

The elections showed all existing committee members willing to stand again and with newcomers we now have a good sized committee, with a good balance of age groups. We are however always keen to welcome any newcomers. Wakes Week itself is very demanding, and to be honest, we cannot have too many members! Roger Cundy and Sandra Chadfield were re-elected as Treasurer and Secretary, and Denis Laycock remains as Chairman.

The first Committee Metting followed on from the AGM when we began making arranges for this year’s Wakes Week. After all, it is only 12 weeks away!

Thank you to Denis Laycock for submitting this report.

Last night’s AGM at St. Peter’s

Parwich Parochial Church Council had a positive meeting last night. Jonathan Marshall stepped down after six years as church warden. His dedicated input has been much appreciated, and it is heartening that he offered to take over as PCC secretary, fitting it in between his travelling the world’s railways. Helen Pitts and Martin Compton were elected unopposed as the new church wardens for St. Peter’s.

The Rev. Tim Morris, Superintendent Minister of the Ashbourne Methodist Circuit, attended the meeting to progress the closer working between the two congregations in Parwich. After the Chapel closes in May the Methodist will meet in the Lady Chapel at St Peter’s on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 2-30pm, and will join with the current family service there on the 3rd Sunday. The font and organ from the Chapel will be kept in the side chapel. There was discussion about how we could gather material on the history and people’s memories of the Chapel.

A lot of progress has been made on maintaining and repairing the fabric of the Church. Some work has already taken place and a number of projects are nearing fruition. Sunday 6th of July is to see a celebratory service dedicating the new stained glass window, the replica tympanum, and perhaps even the garden of remembrance. The service will also involve the dedication of an altar frontal in the Lady Chapel in memory of Dorothy Foden. However there is still a substantial number of repairs required, and the PCC will be exploring ways of raising money to protect the fabric of our church for the next 140 years.

In two weeks the AGM season continues with that of Alsop PCC on Wednesday 9th April.

Last night we had a great evening at the Memorial Hall. The WI had invited Carolyn back again, (after her success with Christmas Card making) this time to make Easter Cards. All sorts of things had been cut out ready for us and then we were able to use all our ‘creative talents’ to make some super cards. Carolyn also showed us some examples of scrapbooking, I was amazed at the professional results, which we were assured were easy to do. I went onto to Internet when I got home to try to find a definitive description for this craft.

What is ‘Scrapbooking’?

The craft of scrapbooking is the preservation of your photographs and memories in archival quality albums using photo-safe materials. Photographs are cropped, pages decorated and memories recorded to create beautiful keepsakes for the enjoyment of generations to come. Stickers, decorative scissors, cropping aids, coloured papers and pens are all used to create imaginative and lasting album pages.

Example of scrapbooking

I went as a visitor to the WI and was made to feel really welcome, finishing off with some super home-made cakes really rounded off the evening. So watch the Calendar for details of other up and coming WI events.
