Dog Fouling

This from the Parish Council-

Concerns about dog fouling on the Parson’s Croft playing field have again been raised with the Parish Council. Like all open public spaces in the Village, Parsons Croft is already covered by a Derbyshire Dales Public Space Protection Order. This makes failure to clear up dog fouling an offence for which a fixed penalty can be issued.

If the problem continues, the Parish Council may feel that it has no alternative but to consider applying for a Dog Control Order (DCO) banning dogs from the area altogether.

The Council would be very reluctant to take this step, recognising how unfair it would be to the majority of responsible dog owners. But it has also to consider how unfair it is to residents, and particularly children using the area, to expose them to the health risks caused by illegal dog fouling.

If a DCO had to be introduced, responsibility for the injustice caused to some would lie clearly with those dog owners who had caused the problem.

Please help the Council to avoid the need to consider such a measure by ensuring that these concerns as widely understood as possible.

Instances of dog fouling should be reported here,

http://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/environment-and-waste/roads/street-care-and-cleaning/dog-fouling

This will bring them to the attention of the enforcement officers who can issue fines. It is not necessary to identify the offender in order to make a report. It is possible to request removal of faeces, but if it has been dealt with this can be noted on the report.

Just to let you know, I have let the council know the dog waste bin by the toilets is overflowing with poo bags now being placed, understandably, on the floor. They said it should be collected with 48 hours. Has anyone noticed if any of the other dog waste bins around the village are overflowing too?

A Sad Event

Our beloved family pet has late this afternoon been hit by a car. What is frustrating is that the person driving did not stop. Fortunately Petra died instantly.
Could I please ask all those passing through the village to slow down, as it’s not only animals that I’m thinking about but children too. Just because it’s a 30 zone does not mean you drive at 30mph and or above!

We have had the following request from Vicky T:
Has anybody in the village who owns chickens possibly have any form of Flubenvet I could borrow please, whether it be mixed in with layer pellets or just on it’s own. I am unable to get out the village due to a broken wrist, I have ordered some but will take a few days to arrive and would like to start one of my hens on it immediately.

Thank you in advance

Missing Cat

Update on Leo.
Leo came home this morning in good health, little thin but happy.
Thank you for everyone for looking out for him over the past two weeks we are very grateful!
Thank you the Brett Family

IMG_1109

Name: Leo
Hasn’t been home since Friday 25th of May, which is completely out of his character.
•He is a two year old, grey tabby cat.
•He has four white socks and is extremely friendly.
•He has no collar but is microchipped
•We are very worried about him because he has never gone missing before. He never really ranges too far from 3 Sycamore Cottages, but he does travel in all directions.
•Please can you check sheds, buildings or outhouses (in case he has been locked in).
•If you see him or know of his whereabouts please contact Eva Brett on 01335 390730/ 07903 269190. Even if it is not good news, please get in contact.
Thank you very much.

Irresponsible Dog Owners

This notice is a call out to irresponsible dog owners.

Tonight at Friday football we were unfortunate to find that an irresponsible dog owner had allowed their dog to use the goal area as a toilet…
Dog fouling is not a criminal offence, but not picking up your dogs mess is!..
I have informed the Parish Council of this matter and know that we will have their support to eradicate this disgusting behaviour.
I am sure that most people know that handling dog faeces can cause irreversible blindness in young children, I therefore ask all dog owners who use Parsons Croft to exercise their dogs… please, please, please exercise them away from the football pitch and away from the pavilion…. and pick up!
Thank you for your support

Missing Cat – FOUND!

UPDATE: I have found him!

He was near Lee and Sam’s in some shrubbery on the other side of the Brook. He is pretty shaken up so am guessing he had a really bad scare but he seems physically fine. He was really near to where our youngest cat went missing in November.

Thank you so much to everyone who got in touch.

New Parwich Resident

We have a new resident in the village.  He arrived on Saturday 14th April.  His name is Jackson and he’s a gorgeous tabby Tom cat who has been adopted from Cheadle Animal Welfare Society by Fiona.

Jackson is about 3 years old and was left behind when his owners moved.  How unkind is that?  He had to live in a shed and rely on a neighbour for food.  Thankfully the neighbour asked for help and Jackson was taken into care. He lived in Hanley so has gone from being a Town Boy to being a Country Gent.  I’m sure he will love living in Parwich, after all there is nowhere better.

Dog owners asked to keep pets under close control in countryside

Dog owners are urged to keep their pets on short leads to protect wildlife in the Peak District National Park. During the breeding season of spring and early summer, new-born lambs and ground-nesting birds, such as lapwing, curlew and snipe, are particularly vulnerable to harm from dogs roaming free or on long leads.

By law, dogs must be under control on public rights of way and on a short lead on open access land from March 1 to July 31. In fields containing farm animals and nesting birds, it is sensible to keep dogs on leads.

Peak District National Park access and rights of way manager Mike Rhodes said: “Walking a dog is one of the joys of being in the countryside, but we need all dog owners to keep their pets under proper control during this sensitive time, which usually means being on a short lead. Ground nesting birds are particularly at risk, while sheep and lambs can also be badly injured or killed by uncontrolled dogs. For its own safety, never let a dog approach or chase farm animals or wildlife – your dog could get kicked, trampled or lost and it could be legally shot for chasing farm animals. It is not a legal requirement to use a lead on public paths, but you should be extra vigilant in the breeding season and always use a lead if you can’t rely on your dog’s obedience.”

Dogs are not allowed at all on some moors to protect sensitive breeding sites – and signs will indicate this on site.

To report incidents involving dogs on farmland or moors, call the police on 101. To ask for signs to go up in problem areas, please contact Peak District National Park on 01629 816200 (weekdays).

More advice can be found in the Countryside Code at www.naturalengland.org.uk/countrysidecode

We have received the following information on bird flu form the Derbyshire Association of Local Councils via our Parish Council.

Last winter the UK experienced several outbreaks of avian influenza – better known as bird flu – and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is asking for help to share information in local communities. This highly contagious disease affects birds including chickens, ducks and geese, and can be fatal to them, devastating farmers’ livelihoods. It is just as much of a risk to those with a few chickens in a back garden as to commercial farmers and anyone who keeps chickens, ducks or geese. Defra is asking local councils to share their advice on bird flu in their respective communities, for example on noticeboards using their poster, through social media or in newsletters.

Please help spread the word

There are two brown hens up just past the post box at 3.10pm this afternoon (Friday). I told them they’ve probably missed the last post for sending Christmas parcels but they wouldn’t hear it. You might want to count your chickens if you live that end of the village. I was out with my hounds otherwise I would have knocked on doors to see if they belonged to people I know who have hens around there.

Have you seen our cat?

Update – Hamish McT has been found – his splendid tail was tightly wrapped around  brambles in the field behind Lee and Sam’s.  He was a bit shaky and needs to go to the vets shortly to have his tail checked over for a suspected break / injury. However, he can’t be too bad as he has eaten plenty and is now on the bed, fast asleep.

Thank you so much to everyone who has been in touch, looked for him and offered to help – we really appreciate it – he is a very lucky cat (and we feel so very lucky too)! And to Shaun M for releasing him from the briars!

Green parakeet sighting

Lucy B has contacted us to say that this morning she experienced a random sighting of a bright green parakeet opposite her house.
They are common in London but has anyone ever seen one in our area? Or, has someone lost a pet?
Has anyone else seen it?

Updated later the same day

A pair of ringnecked parakeets (Psittacula krameri) were feasting on yew berries in the church yard this lunch time. Here is a photo of the female. The male did not stand still long enough to photograph him. Presumably they are from the breeding populations in either Manchester or Sheffield touring the countryside. It will be interesting how long they stay. Peter T

Have you seen these hens…?

We have recently lost two of our hens (pictures below, though they look a bit more scruffy at the min due to moulting and unwanted male attention). One disappeared a couple of weeks ago and one went missing more recently. They are usually in the field between Pond Cottage and Veronica’s, and they wander up as far as the school. Has any one seen any hens wandering about in that vicinity, or had any unexpected additions to their flock? We have found no evidence of feathers (in the field or on the road), heard no unusual hen noise and we are not aware of any sightings of a fox. It’s all a bit of a mystery…. So we would be very appreciative if anyone can help.

Many thanks, Rob and Emma (tel. 203)

A home needs to be found for Billy, a black and white cat who is currently in the care of Cheadle Animal Welfare Society..  He doesn’t like being cooped up in a pen while a home is found for him as he loves the outdoors.  Billy is very much an independent cat, preferring his own company.  He doesn’t want to be fussed, he just wants to be left alone to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it.   He needs a home where he can be looked after but live outside with a dry safe place to sleep and eat.  It needs to be a home where there are no children or other cats and most importantly one which is in the country.   Billy is microchipped and neutered.  Anybody interested in finding out more about Billy can ring 01335 390369 or email cheadleanimalwelfare@hotmail.co.uk

UPDATE: Billy has now been rehomed

New Year Resolution for All Dog Owners – pick up your poo!
For the third time in the past week I have picked up and binned other dogs’ faeces on the large cricket pitch when depositing my own dogs’ waste.  I do this on behalf of all other good dog owners who would hate to see another place that dogs are banned from entering just because some people can’t be bothered. Maybe a bin can be placed on the field to make it more enticing to do the right thing?
Dogs are meant to be man’s best friend, but they are regulated more than any other pet in the country! We’ve already been told we can’t use the smaller playing field because it’s for children only, (despite seeing around seven kids play on there in two years.) I’d love it if dogs had a designated play area so we can all be responsible for looking after said area. Instead, I fear, I’ll see a notice on this blog to say dogs are no longer allowed on the cricket pitch either simply because of a handful of people. We are not perfect dog owners ourselves, our dogs are not perfect, but one thing we do do is make sure we pick up their do do’s!
So please, learn to steel your stomachs for this unpleasant task and think of the greater good.
Woof!
