New Farm Shop at Alstonefield

A new farm shop has opened at The George in Alstonefield. The shop is behind the pub, accessed through the car park.

The farm shop specialises in organic, seasonal and local produce including: vegetables from a local market gardener, organic beef and lamb from Lower Hurst Farm, fresh milk butter and cheese from Peak District Dairy. In addition, chefs from the pub’s kitchen prepare freshly baked bread, cakes and savouries. The philosophy behind the shop is to only use suppliers who share a passion for really good food.

Opening times are Tuesday-Friday 10am-4pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm (closed Mondays). For more details contact The George on 01335 310205.

Emergency Support

The above group will be coming to give us a day’s teaching on what to do if you find a child in a life threatening situation.

It will be on Saturday 31st January 2009 in the Memorial Hall, and will run from 9 to 5, and will be free.

All areas of emergency situations involving children will be covered, including choking, drowning, poisoning, fits etc. We will have lectures in the morning and then spend the afternoon in (scarily) realistic scenarios outside, around the hall and in the village.

If you are a parent, a grandparent, a child minder, a teacher or just someone who would like to know how to help a child in an emergency, this course would be ideal for you.

For those of you who may have missed yesterday’s Politics Show on BBC1, here’s a chance to catch up with the segment of the programme which featured Parwich residents (Lynette, Peter, Chris, Ray and Karen) expressing their desire to see greater democratic accountability within the Peak District National Park Authority. Well done to all of them for making their cases so eloquently.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

ADMIN: As the number of Parwich-related videos is beginning to stack up, we have added a separate VIDEOS section to the column on the right hand side of this page.

Fish & Chips – Thumbs Up

fish_and_chipsIt’s 7.50pm, you’ve still got 10 minutes left to get over to The Green for your supper.  The fish & chips definitely gets the thumbs up from the Bennett home.  The fish was light and not heavily battered, the chips tasty & appropriately “soggy” (just perfect).

Let’s hope it will be a regular destination for the van & something easy for us to enjoy on a Friday night.

p.s.  Can we bring Fish & Chips to the Cinema on a Friday night?

Problems with your water?

Owing to a burst at Knockerdown, water supplies to Parwich have been temporarily cut off.

Severn Trent Water tell us that they are working on the problem as a matter of priority, and that they hope to resume normal services “within the next couple of hours”.

(We called them at 16:15, so that would make for an estimate of 18:15.)

The 24 hour emergency contact number for Severn Trent Water is 0800 783 4444.

Update – 17:30: The water supply appears to have returned, but still at a low pressure.

Update – 18:00: Everything seems normal again.

End of a Retail Era

Yesterday saw the last visit of Andrew Peach with the butcher’s van to Parwich and the area.  The firm of Peach’s of Ashbourne has been selling meat from a van in the village for at least three generations of Peaches and over three generations of villagers.

There has been a decline in the number of firms bringing vans out to the villages over the years, and increasingly Andrew Peach has found it had to staff the shop and go out on the van.  It was with obvious regret that he felt obliged to stop the service, which has been much appreciated by those who have used it over the years.

All that remains of the mobile shop services is Morris & Son’s fish van on a Friday

Many thanks for the following information from Lynn Burrows, the Peak District National Park Ranger for our area:

The Peak District National Park Authority’s Area Team in the Parwich, Ballidon and Alsop en le Dale area

The Peak District National Park Authority’s Ranger Service
provides a crucial link between the authority and the local community – relaying information, complaints and compliments. We also carry out much of the work on the ground in local communities for the National Park Authority.

The Peak District National Park Authority has two main jobs:

  • To take care of the landscape, wildlife and culture of the Peak District so that it will be here for future generations to enjoy
  • And to provide opportunities for people to understand and enjoy this fabulous and inspiring landscape.

This is supported by a third aim which is to help sustain the communities that live within the Peak District.

As rangers this means that we are involved in a wide variety of activities and in the recent past I have carried out the following type of work in your area: (more…)

Happy with your insurers?

A conversation between several people over a garden wall resulted in us being asked to do the following post:

People have had varied responses from their different insurance companies in relation to the rain/flood damage of the other weekend.  Some feel they have had a very rapid response and an exemplary service, but others have concerns.  One household had a very rapid initial response but now feel they are left not knowing what is going to happen; another feels their contents insurers are trying to shift the reponsibility to the buildings insurer for what should be contents leaving them falling between the two stools.

It has been suggested that comments here on the Blog may help those less happy with the service they are getting.  If people that are happy with their insurers say so in the comments section below, this will give those unhappy with theirs something to cite to their own insurers, or in the worst case the name of alternative insurance companies to change to when their policy comes up for renewal.  Those people unhappy with their insurers may be able to use comments on the Blog to put the pressure of adverse publicity on them to come up with the goods.  (more…)

An aerial view!!

Thank you to Colin B for sending in this blog.

I read with interest Mike A’s recommendation for his new aerial. The picture on Mike’s TV screen may have improved, but the picture from our window certainly hasn’t !!! Without wanting to initiate a neighbourly dispute, I attach a photo of the aforementioned aerial taken this morning from our garden.

No aerial, certainly including mine, could be said to be a thing of beauty but this one being both larger and a couple of metres higher than those on the adjoining houses does rather catch the eye. The passage of time and soot from the chimney will, I am sure lessen the impact of this installation. I have been receiving digital TV for at least 4 years with a smaller aerial pointing in a different direction, albeit from a higher elevation.

I find it rather ironic that I believe is is possible to erect such a thing without any sort of permission, yet to mount a discrete, black, round, binlid-sized piece of space age technology requires planning permission for those of us in listed buildings in conservation areas. I have heard that this permission has been previously refused. I understand that the new ‘freesat’ service achieves or shortly will achieve much better reception and more channels on digital TV than even the largest aerial in our locality.

Digital aerials: a recommendation.

If you need a digital aerial installing, upgrading or repairing, then I can wholeheartedly recommend MW Digital Aerials in Ashbourne.

She brings even more artistic talent into the village and could appear on your door-step at any moment if you have a garden that looks as if it might contain frogs or toads!

Having being practising artistry since childhood, Esther has been working as a professional artist for the last five years, since graduating. Here are a few examples of her work…

The Friday fish van.

This seems like an ideal time of the week to alert people to the excellent local fish delivery service, which calls into Parwich every Friday afternoon.

The service is run by R.G. Morris & Son, a family firm which operates from Buxton. Bob and Daniel Morris provide a helpful, informative and cheerful service, and are happy to leave deliveries in out-buildings or with neighbours if their customers are still out at work.

Free range poultry and eggs are also provided, along with seasonal game.

To quote from the firm’s brochure:

We offer the highest quality seafood, ranging from sustainable wild and farmed fish, to organically farmed fish. We also provide a wide variety of shellfish from well-managed and environmentally friendly fisheries, such as rope-grown mussels and hand-dived scallops.

Some fishing methods have now been found to damage the environment and have become an unacceptable way of sourcing fish. As a company, we will endeavour to provide fish and seafood caught through sustainable methods, thus promoting and helping to ensure that our industry continues to grow and improve in a viable way.

Our fish is brought in from the various ports all around the country to our refrigerated depot. From there we distribute it to all our customers on a daily basis, ensuring that it is fresh and of the highest quality each day.

We have been using this service for several years, and have been absolutely delighted with it. (Try the dressed crabs, the Dover sole or the halibut – they’re all gorgeous.)

Affordable Housing Meeting

Last Wednesday’s meeting of the Village Action Group at the Sycamore was very positive.  Unless we identify local need, the District Council and the Peak Park Authority will not push forward.  Dales Housing and Nottingham Community Housing Association are very positive, but funding and planning consent depend on demonstration of need.  At present the authorities work to the rule of thumb that ‘one home will be created for every three households identified as needing it’.

It was agreed that all those who require now, or will require in the next few years, affordable housing in or near Parwich be asked to write a brief letter to the Village Action Group stating their need.  If you, or anyone you know, also want to be included, get in touch.  Writing a letter does not commit you to any future course of action, as it is understood that individuals’ circumstances may change in the time taken to provide any new homes.

If you have any questions contact Ann Wheeldon (571) or Peter Trewhitt (287).  Please give your letters to Ann or Peter or leave them at the Sycamore Inn by Sunday 8th June.  (Information in the letters will remain confidential although they will be passed on to Derbyshire Dales District Council.)  We will take the numbers to the Parish Council and with them work out the best way to approach the District Council.

Thank you to Peter Trewhitt for providing this interview with Simon Spencer, Councillor for the Dovedale and Parwich Ward of Derbyshire Dales District Council

Simon Spencer should be well placed to understand our local issues. His family have lived and worked in the area for sometime, the family firm, Spencer’s Bakery of Ashbourne, having been founded in 1826. Although born in New Zealand, he came back to Ashbourne when only six months old, and has lived here ever since. Attending Osmaston Primary School, he quickly became familiar with the Parwich and Dovedale area helping his grandfather and later his uncles with their daily bread deliveries. Also his connection with Parwich included annual trips to Parwich Wakes: “It was a really good day out.” (more…)

It’s French!” imports speciality foods from France and is committed to providing high quality products, not available in supermarkets in France or the UK, to people passionate about food.

The initiative has been set up by Carolyn and Simon, a local couple from Clifton, who have been visiting Parwich every Saturday for the past few years whilst their daughter has riding lessons.

As well as their home in Clifton, they have a base in Gascony in South West France. Gascony is the land of d’Artagnan, the inspiration for the character in The Three Musketeers. It is also famed for its ‘douceur de vivre’ (‘sweetness of life’). It is home to foie gras and Armagnac and is an area which has been recognised for many years as producing great food

Carolyn and Simon have personally sourced their products from small, local, artisan farmers and growers. The farms have usually been passed down through several generations and traditional methods are still employed. All of the suppliers are passionate about their products, from conception through to distribution.

The range of products is growing all the time but current highlights include….. read on…..  (more…)

Do you or your family use the sports field and area on Parson’s Croft?

If so, there is a great opportunity for you to play a part in its management.

We are holding a preliminary meeting next Saturday 26th April at 10:00 a.m. to see if there is interest in forming a group to look at various issues.

This group would consider topics related to

  • Maintenance
  • Promotion
  • Development

If it goes ahead, the group will make recommendations to the Parish Council on matters related to the whole area.

So if you are a user, would like to be a user or are an adjoining resident, why not have your say?

We hope that the group will be Positive and Proactive, ensuring that this wonderful facility is available, and continues to develop, for years to come.

Planning Information on-line

A big welcome to Emma on the blog team: she has lots of ideas on how to contribute to the site. One idea she has is a regular feature on planning issues. However with the following, I am perhaps being guilty here of stealing some of her thunder.

I noticed today that the Planning Officer’s report on the proposed extension to Station Road Farm has been posted on the Peak Park Authority’s website. This is to be considered at Friday’s meeting of the Planning Committee at Bakewell. The Parish Council have supported this application and there are some 31 letters of support from local residents, and no letters of objection.

The Officer’s Report makes interesting reading, as it is much more thorough than reports I have previously seen. The Planning Service is undoubtedly committed to fighting for refusal of the application. It is too late to add any further comments, though the Committee meeting is open to the public. I am sure the applicant and her family will welcome the support of friends and neighbours (in the real, not planner’s interpretation of the word) at what must be a stressful time.

Confusingly the Planning Officer raises the issue of building affordable housing; though do read the report as it may help the community in general to raise the profile of this with the Authority, after their previous resistance to the Nottingham Housing Association application for additional houses at Smithy Close and Rathbone Croft. Also the report is perhaps an indication of the role the Conservation Area Appraisal may play in future planning applications.

The following was supplied by ‘a bemused Peak dweller’ (otherwise Peter T):

The commendable success of PARWICH.ORG, I feel, relates to the strength of our community and to neighbourliness. I had thought up to March of this year that I had understood the word ‘neighbour’, but, having been in correspondence with the Peak District National Park Authority on this matter, I now realise I have completely failed to understand this word. Hopefully readers will learn from my failure to grasp the extent of my own ignorance.

Somewhat naively I had assumed that ‘neighbour’ first and foremost means next door neighbour: ‘people that live in adjacent dwellings’. Many readers are probably shaking their heads, and wondering “Was he asleep at Sunday school? Doesn’t he know the Parable of the Good Samaritan?” (St. Luke chapter 10 verses 30-37). Indeed here Christ finishes with the question “Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was the neighbour to him that fell among the thieves?”. Already there is more to the concept than first meets the eye.

I had previously voiced concern that the Peak District National Park Authority, unlike many local authorities, did not automatically inform people of planning applications that might affect their property, so I was very pleased to see they had introduced a Neighbour Notification Scheme for planning applications. Following the previous post on the successful resurfacing of the hard play area and the community work day, Di Turnbull has sent us further information:

P.A.R.C. stands for Play Area Resurfacing Committee. It was set up purely to organise the resurfacing of the hard play area. It is a sub-committee of the Parish Council. After the opening on the 20th April, recommendations for the maintenance and upkeep of the area will be forwarded to the Parish Council and then P.A.R.C. will disband.

We are hoping to have a preliminary meeting during April for anyone who has an interest in managing, maintaining and promoting the whole of the Parson’s Croft sporting area – a new ‘Field Management Committee’. This would involve all user groups – cricket, tennis, bowls, football, netball etc.- Parish council reps. and adjoining residents (or any residents for that matter), who would like to play an active role in this fantastic facility. We are so lucky to have it and would like to keep it in tip-top condition.

Di also added the following discussion point:

A couple of years ago, I set up a fundraising section on the Tennis Club website, which has clickable banners. These have tracking codes embedded and earn the Club commission on sales. It has been working fine so far but could be much more widely used. For some time I have been wondering how to open this up to the whole village, as I’m sure many people buy internet goods, who are not aware of this scheme. There are lots of banners on the site and it’s just a matter of clicking through the link to the merchant. There is a ‘Fundraising Sitemap’, which shows all the companies and their commission rate. Then there are the two links pages, split into categories – one with general companies and another for sports gear.

If enough funds were raised, this may be an opportunity to benefit all user groups/villagers in relation to the Parson’s Croft area.

(Pheadair’s note: We have not addressed the issue of using PARWICH.ORG to generate income yet and we see extending community involvement as our first priority, though a few people have already made suggestions and it is planned that we will participate in the Memorial Hall fund raising. Do add your thoughts.)

Bradbourne

This morning Ben & I went over to Bradbourne to support Flo at the Haven Grange Club Coffee morning in the Church Hall. They raised £103.65. It was a nice little affair, with Flo manning the bric a brac and the cake table.

I asked Flo what the Club was all about. Apparently the Church & Social Services set it up 11 years ago and it is an opportunity for elderly people to get together for coffee & then lunch. A bus comes to Parwich every Tuesday to collect members and returns during the afternoon. It is an ideal opportunity for anyone who is feeling lonely, would like some company and make new friends.

If you are interested or know someone that might benefit from this service, please ring Flo on 390619.

Whilst we were there we wandered over to the Church, but unfortunately it was locked. However over the Bank Holiday Weekend, in aid of the Church roof appeal there will be a flower festival and an affordable arts exhibition with refreshments. We’ll post more details nearer the time, but it will be a great opportunity to see & support the Church and admire those fantastic views of Parwich from the churchyard.
