Season nearly finished

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Last game of the season in one league, second last in the other. What will we do on Tuesday evenings and Thursday afternoons? What repeats are on the telly?

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Matlock Golf Club – 3 September.

Last game of the season. We won all four of the games on the Matlock green so the pressure was on to repeat the win. Down A and Dot H certainly gave us a fabulous start winning 21 – 1. Makes you feel quite sorry for their opponents. (Not). We managed to win two of the other three games quite well, but lost the third. The final score was Parwich 70 to Matlock 54. Good to end on a winning note. Hopefully we will finish about halfway in the league, a good result for such a small club as ours.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Last home match – Bradwell – 5 September.

Bradwell are top of the division and are certain to be promoted. We lost quite well on their green in June and although we did not necessarily expect to win we did want to do well on our green. In the three doubles we won one and lost two. Pat B and Sue A did well in their doubles, beating a very good Bradwell pairing. By the end of the doubles we were down 41 to 61. The singles players on our team played a stormer. We won four games and just lost a fifth by one point. This made the singles result 81 to 66 to us. The final score was a small defeat 122 to 127. Not bad against the league winners!

  • Next Match –  Away – Chatsworth – 12th Sept – 1.45pm

Season nearly over

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Well I should have known that after a good week last week we came down to earth with a vengeance! We did get back to the old regime of win one, lose one however, the loss was a really good one.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Hathersage – 27 August.

So having got our best score of the year last week, we managed to collapse in a big way this week. The only consolation I suppose is that our opponents are top of the division and will be promoted so we won’t have to play them next year. That’s positive thinking for you! Edith and Rick did win one game, but our next best team only scored 7! The final result was Hathersage 82 – Parwich 39. It’s probably just as well we only have one match left.

  • LAST match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 3 September 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Park – 29 August.

A couple more matches to go in this league and thankfully we are hanging in there. Our double pairs did us proud only trailing by 47 points to 49 with Ian J and John H winning well 21-7. This gave us a good platform. We did a bit better in the singles winning four out of the six. Our score was 84 out of a possible 90. The final result was Matlock Park 104, Parwich 131. This should keep us about half way in the division.

  • Second to last match- Home – Bradwell – 5 September – 1.45pm.

Bowls Report 23rd Aug ’13

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Only a few matches left in both the leagues we play in. One win and a narrow loss this week.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Wirksworth – 20 August.

Having lost quite well last week we hoped that in our match this week we could redeem ourselves a little, and boy did we do so. Only once before this year had we managed to win all four games and thereby score the maximum points available. We won all four this week and gain our revenge for our defeat on the Wirksworth green. The result was Parwich 84 –Wirksworth 62. This win should keep us in our halfway position in the division. Only two matches left in this league.

  • Next match – Away – Hathersage – 27 August 6.15pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Hathersage – 22 August – 1.30pm

In our match against Hathersage in May we suffered our worst defeat for a long, long time. We were determined not to suffer a similar defeat on our green and although we lost it was only just. Our new members Tony and Sue played a great game and won convincingly. Unfortunately our other doubles pairs did not do so well. We were 59 to 41 down. In the singles games we won four out of the six and nearly pulled off a really good comeback, but it was not to be. We lost by two points 123 to 125. Not bad considering we lost by in excess of 70 points at Hathersage earlier in the season.

  • Next match Away – Matlock Park – 29 August – 1.45pm.

No more club matches left this year so if you want to see great bowls you will have to come down to Parsons Croft for the last couple of home matches.

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Only one league match this week, it didn’t help that it was at Buxton Park. The only good thing about their green is the view from it. However, what a result in the Greenaway competition!!

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Buxton Park – 13 August.

The green was like a sheet of glass, you only had to trickle your wood out of your hand and it finished up in Chapel–en–le–Frith. Coupled with this was the fact that they had been relegated from the top division last year. (Getting the excuses in early) Our opposition were complaining that it was slow! The upshot of this of course was that we did not do very well.

Harry B and Clara E did win one game for us resoundingly, but the remainder were lost. Yes even Rick and Edith. The final score was Buxton 68 Parwich 50.

  • Next match – Home – Wirksworth – 20 August 6.15pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Greenaway Competition

This week is the annual Charity event for the Greenaway Centre in Darley Dale. It is played at two venues, Wirksworth and Whitworth Park. We had a change of venue this year we were at Whitworth Park. The competition is for doubles and names are drawn out of a hat for partners. Bearing in mind there were in excess of 50 people playing at Whitworth alone, with all abilities, it is testament to Parwich that we seem to be able to do well. This year was no exception. Ian J got to the semi final of the repechage and Rick M only went on to win! Congratulations Rick. Still it is not the winning, but the taking part that counts, as they say and more than £1000 was raised.

  • Next match Home – Hathersage – 22 August – 1.45pm.

Last Sunday we played the men’s and ladies singles. Val K won a close match to take the ladies title and Rick M won the men’s. The fourth time in five years. In the men’s final though was Tony A who put up a good game considering he only started playing Crown Green Bowls for the first time this year. There’s no replacement for natural talent!

This Sunday we play the Round Robin competition. It starts at 10.30am and lasts nearly all day. Come down to Parsons Croft and top up your sun tan and see top class bowling!

Bowls Report 9/8/2013

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Getting towards the end of the season, only four matches left after this week in both the leagues we play in. At least we managed to stop the win one lose one sequence, although we did get beaten very comprehensively in one match.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Chatsworth – 6 August.

We were beaten fair and square on the Chatsworth green in May. Time for us to try to reverse the scores. We did manage to win three out of the four games. Dawn and Edith in their game were losing 7 – 0, but went on to win 21 – 8. What a result. In the remaining games we won two comfortably and the third we got 16 points to 21, again a good result. Having won last week with a score in the mid seventies it was good to repeat the score to an even better degree winning in the end 79 – 58. This was an almost exact reversal of the score when we played at Chatsworth.

  • Next match – Away – Buxton Park – 13 August 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Bath – 9 August 2013.

We cancelled this match from Thursday until Friday, however the result was going to be the same whenever we played. The green at Matlock Bath is the smallest we play on and is in the shape of a fifty pence piece with humps and hollows all over the green ( getting the excuses ready!). In the doubles we were behind 63 to 32. Normally we can get our act together in the singles, but not this week. We only managed to win two out of the six games. Val had a really good win 15 – 4 and John H squeezed through 15 – 14.We lost the remaining games with a final score 78 to 71. The overall score was 141 to Matlock and 103 to Parwich, our lowest score of the year. No match next week, we play the annual Greenaway Charity Games. Good fun and more importantly for a good cause.

  • Next match – Home – Hathersage – 22 August – 1.45pm.

Sunday has us all down at Parsons Croft playing in the ladies and men’s singles. Come on down at about 2.00pm

PP5The Parwich Panoramic 5 fell race started in 2009. Initially set up as a fund raiser towards the redevelopment of the Memorial Hall, our village hall, it has become an annual fixture in the fell runner’s calendar.

Further down the post is an outline of the Senior Race route, and information on the history of what you might see when taking it at a more leisurely pace than the PP5 competitors do. Please  walk the route and send in any photographs to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, as we hope eventually to produce a leaflet for both locals and visitors.

But first, here are the race results and photographs from previous years posted at parwich.org:

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The changeable weather looks like continuing, which is a shame for the Ashes cricket match at Old Trafford – with all three results currently possible, a good day tomorrow (Monday) could see a classic finish! Unfortunately tomorrow doesn’t look too good with rain forecast to disrupt play, which would indicate the draw will be the most probable outcome. Tuesday however looks like being a better day for the Parwich Panoramic Five race. Wednesday onwards looks like being a return to the present unsettled theme with more rain possible.

Lose some, WIN SOME!

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Having played this week’s teams on their greens and been successful on both we needed to get back to our winning ways, thankfully we did.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Ashwood Park – 30 July.

Having shared the games two apiece on Ashwood’s green we did the same again on our green, with the same result. Harry and Val played a stormer as indeed did Edith and Rick, both pairs winning their respective games 21 – 4. You can’t get too much better than that. In the two remaining games, although we lost them, our points scored were very good. In the end we only dropped nine points from the maximum possible of 84. Parwich 75, Ashwood 50. Our opponents next week beat us really well, plus we were penalised for completing the score card incorrectly. Let us hope we do better next week.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 6 August 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Chatsworth – 1 August 2013.

Audrey and Dennis played well in their doubles game, as indeed did Clara and Ian, but we only managed to win one of the three games. In the singles we won four out of the six games, with Dawn and Tony scoring heavily in their games. In the end we scored 79 out of a possible 90. This gave us a win by 126 to 120. We were mid table in the division and this score should keep us there. Next week we are at Matlock Bath, on their green. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Bath – 8 August – 1.45pm.

The Square Robin, played last Sunday, was a really good day and the outcome was unclear right until the final game. In the end Harry and Rick came out on top. Congratulations. The friendly match against Ashbourne Bowls Club due to be played this Sunday, has been cancelled.

We appear to be in a bit of a loop in terms of winning and losing. This week we lost both our matches, last week we won both. The week before we lost both. What price two wins next week?

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Whitworth Park – 23 July.

Although we lost we gave a good account of ourselves at Whitworth. We managed to win three out of the four games, however in the one we lost, we lost with a vengeance. Dot and Dawn played like demons and Harry and Val came back to achieve a cracking win. The final score was Whitworth 69, Parwich 65 almost a reversal of the score on our green. Next week we entertain Ashwood Park, Buxton who we always seem to struggle against. Let’s hope we can follow our loss week with a win.

  • Next match – Home – Ashwood Park – 30 July 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Wirksworth – 25 July.

We tried really hard this week. Although we lost the doubles two games to one our scores were good. Clara and Dot came from 13-1 down to win 21-19, what a come back. The final result of the doubles was Wirksworth 61, Parwich 50. In the singles we shared the games three each. Unfortunately our opponents won more points than us scoring 63 to our 61. One great result, however was Tony A who, in only his third game in the league, won 15-12. What a find for us. The final score was Wirksworth 124, Parwich 111.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 1 August – 1.45pm.

A good time was had by all on Sunday last week. This week we are playing a club competition, Square Robin. The competition starts at 10.00 Sunday morning. Meander down and have a look.

Women’s Cycling Group

Female focus for District Council bike riding initiative

Three fabulous Derbyshire Dales locations are now hosting a new cycling initiative that focuses on women.

Following the launch in June at Carsington Water of the first in a series of women-only bike rides on safe trails led by a trained leader, the initiative has moved up a gear with new rides on the Monsal and Tissington Trails.

Suitable for beginners, the scheme is being organised by Derbyshire Dales District Council with partners British Cycling, Carsington Sports & Leisure, Monsal Trail Cycle Hire and the Peak District National Park Authority.

Local women can select their location every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 to 11am. On Mondays, riders meet at Hassop Station; on Tuesdays it’s Carsington Water and on Wednesdays, the starting point for the Tissington Trail is Ashbourne Cycle Hire.

Small children are welcome and it’s just £6 to hire an adult bike and free to use your own. Trailers and child seats are also available to hire and booking is essential on 01629 540478 or email enquiries@carsingtonwater.com for Carsington, and by calling the District Council’s Youth Sports Development Officer Marie Widerman for the Monsal and Tissington Trails on 01629 761380 or email marie.widerman@derbyshiredales.gov.uk

Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Communities Committee, Councillor Jennifer Bower said: “I’ve already tried the Carsington ride myself and had a great time. The District Council works hard to promote safe and healthy communities and these rides are a terrific way of getting more people active – and meeting new people – in a really enjoyable way.”

Heroics on the Bowling Green

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Now I know I give the impression that bowlers are a hardy lot, but having to put up with the weather we have had for the past week has been nothing short of heroic. Putting up with all this sunshine and winning matches too, what a team.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Bakewell – 16 July.

Thankfully Bakewell are not having a very good season this year. They are struggling down near the bottom of the league, and their form against us did not improve in this match. We even managed to win three of the four games, and without our Edith, who unfortunately had hurt her leg and was unable to play. Anyway the night was hot and steamy, and the bowls was good as well. We came out on top 73 points to 67. We have been slowly creeping up the division, but I’m not sure if this will lift us up from our current sixth place.

  • Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 23 July 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Baslow – 18 July.

We had beaten Baslow on their green in the first half of the season and on a stonker of an afternoon we played them on our green. On very hot days some people ride bikes up mountains, we go one better and play bowls! Once again we struggled a bit in the doubles winning only one of the three, but our two new members played for only the second time in the league and they both made a great impact. Well done Tony and Sue.

The singles brought us a bit better results winning five out of the six games. We achieved 85 out of a possible 90 points. The final score was Parwich 131, Baslow 101. This should keep us in the top half of the league.

  • Next match – Away – Wirksworth – 25 July – 1.45pm.

Our friendly match against Ashbourne Park last Sunday was really enjoyable and we are having another one against Hazelwood this Sunday. It should be another good afternoon. Come down to Parsons Croft and support our regular crowd, Ron T. We start at 2.00pm.

Bowls Report 12th July 2013

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Both our matches this week were away and against teams who either play on tricky greens or are considerably bigger than us. We did well against the ‘big’ club, but not so good on the tricky green.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Matlock Bath – 9 July.

We had already lost to Matlock Bath on our green and their green is shaped like a fifty pence piece and about the same size. It was also so fast you only had to drop your wood and it finished up in the Derwent! To cap it all there was a sight that was akin to flying pigs or fairies at the bottom of the garden, Edith and Rick LOST, not by much (only three points), but a loss none the less. Still we have to let them lose every now and again, otherwise they would be unbearable! The upshot of this debacle was that we only won one game, well done Dennis E and Harry B. The final score was Matlock 79 Parwich 65.

  • Next match – Home – Bakewell – 16 July 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Tideswell – 11 July.

This is such a nice place to play bowls, the outlook is great and the facilities are equally good. Unfortunately our Achilles-heel showed again today. We did not play at all well in the doubles and finished up 30 points behind our hosts. The singles came to our rescue with Harry B leading the way by winning 15 – 0. We managed to win a further three singles and lost one more by only one point turning our poor start into quite a final rally. In the end we lost by 125 to 114. We were exactly half way in the league in sixth place. Let us hope we manage to stay in that position.

  • Next match – Home – Baslow – 18 July – 1.45pm.

Sunday brings another friendly match this time against Ashbourne Park. As always these light-hearted matches are great, with good fun and even better food. Come along to Parsons Croft at around 2.00pm and have a look on what should be a lovely sunny day.

Bowls Report – 5th July 2013

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

After last week’s dismal results we managed to put a couple of good matches together this week.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Bradwell – 2 July.

The weather was not good for tonight’s match. We were only playing bowls what must it have been like for the runners in the Wakes Week hill race? Thankfully suitably adorned in thermal wellies and Long John’s, it is only July after all, we battled on!

Although we shared the games two each our losses were not as great as our opposition. In one game Dawn and Clara only lost by one point and of course we do have our Edith ably assisted by Rick who won 21 – 7. The final score finished Parwich 75 Bradwell 63. This win will hopefully lift us up a place, possibly two in the League.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Bath – 9 July 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Whitworth – 4 July.

It was a shame we only had a couple of people who came over to the Green on Wednesday night during the fun and games over on Parsons Croft. It is a pity that nobody seems to have any enthusiasm to join the Bowls Club. Anyway, we played again and did really well. In the doubles we only won one game, but still only finished one shot down over the three games. In the singles we came into our own winning four of the six games. Edith again had a stormer, winning 15 – 1. Felt quite sorry for her opponent. You should have tried harder Edith and won 15 – 0! Whitworth Park are a really nice bunch of people, but it was still good to beat them 134 – 109.

  • Next match – Away – Tideswell – 11 July – 1.45pm.

On Sunday we have a Club competition down at Parsons Croft at 2.00pm. Come down and have a look.

An excellent evening, despite the unreliable weather, with an increased number of entrants in the Junior Race, and some excellent performances from local youngsters. There was a reduced number of runners in the main Senior Race, which was won by C Patterson in 18min 54sec, slower than his winning time last year (this was over a different course because of the very wet conditions), but faster by 5sec than the 2011 winning time over the same course.

Parwich Panoramic Five

The annual Parwich Panoramic Five cross country fell race will take place on Tuesday 6th August at 7:30pm. This is the fifth year of the event, so we’ve a bit to do to clock up the history of our fantastic hill race successfully run again last night.
