We have received the following message from Heather H, who successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this summer:

I just wanted to let you know how my trip climbing Mount Kilimanjaro went. It was just about the hardest thing I think I’ve done, but I had such an amazing time! As you know, before I could go I had to raise £2450. Many of you supported me by coming to my coffee morning, Swiss evening, buying biscuits and bread and thanks to your generosity I exceeded my target.

So here’s a bit about my trip and a few photos if you’re interested! One of the first things we did after arriving was to visit one of the schools that Childreach International is helping to fund. We had a brilliant day playing and singing with the children.

We set off on the climb the next day and the whole thing lasted 6 days – 4½ days up, 1½ back down. We started out walking through humid jungle… (more…)

Terry P has asked us to pass on this warning:

Please would you inform your readers of the potential for an accident in the church yard under the horse chestnut tree, more commonly known as a conker tree.

The tree in question has more recently been dropping its branches without warning, and as you know the footpath runs underneath the tree.

What is more worrying is that it is coming up to conker collecting time for the children, so I would ask parents not to let their children under the tree. We certainly do not want any injuries to the little ones, or to anyone else for that matter.

Olympics buzz inspires Dales Summer Street Games

With the London Olympics creating a buzz throughout the country, Derbyshire Dales District Council has re-launched a range of summer holiday sporting activities for local youngsters.

StreetGames, a Safer Communities through Sport project, offers ‘doorstep’ sport to young people, helping to increase youth participation in sport, prevent youth crime and create volunteering opportunities.

All sessions are funded externally at no cost to Derbyshire Dales Council Tax payers and StreetGames for local young people are being staged by fully qualified coaches weekly across the Dales.

Here’s the Summer 2012 Street Games programme:

  • Ashbourne (Clifton Road Multi Use Games Area) – Thursdays 5.00pm to 6.00pm
  • Matlock (Helicopter Park, Hurst Farm) – Tuesdays 6.00pm to 7.00pm (11+ years)
  • Middleton-by-Wirksworth (Village Hall and playing fields) Thursdays 7.00pm to 9pm (8+ years)
  • Tansley (Fete Field, Spout Lane) Wednesdays 4.00pm to 6.00pm (8+ years)
  • Wirksworth (Anthony Gell School Fields) – Fridays 7.00pm to 8.30pm (11+ years)

The early sessions offer multi sports and are open to all ages and abilities.  The later sessions are generally aimed at teenagers. (more…)

The condition of the roundabout on the children’s play area in the village has deteriorated through age, to the stage where its continued use has been called into question. The Parish Council is actively seeking to have the roundabout repaired or replaced.

This evening, a member of the Parish Council and a volunteer attempted to remove the defective parts for repair, but they found that this was not going to be possible without the use of a mechanical lift.

The roundabout has been left in a safe state, albeit with the central pillar removed and tape applied around it to discourage usage, until this can be arranged later this week.

In the meantime, it would be very much appreciated if parents could ask their children not to use the roundabout until it has been fully repaired.

If anyone has any questions, please contact Matt Harrison.

Many thanks, on behalf of the Parish Council.

Thank you to Cheryl W for this update:

A big thank you to everyone who brought their cars for a wash or just donated money. Current total towards the cost of new goal posts and nets is over £300 with more still to be added in. The kids were brilliant and probably most of the time were wetter than the cars that they were washing.

and to Chris H thank you for the photos

A huge thank you to everyone who supported this evening. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. We raised a whopping £350 for Childreach International and Heather has reached the target set for the sponsored climb. So watch out for news of whether she makes it to the top, and her impressions of her visit to one of the schools in Tanzania funded by this charity.    Sue, Mike and Heather H.

Following the successful pilot scheme, the Peak District Award is now open to any schools, within the National Park and beyond, and is suitable for all ages and abilities. To gain the Peak District Award, participants must complete a study plan and keep a record of what they have done to show others, for example, a diary, scrap book, video or a blog.

We are looking for individuals, families or groups to complete the award during National Park’s Week, Monday July 30 to Sunday August 5. If you are up for the challenge contact the Award Team to find out more.

For more information or to apply for the award contact the Award Team on 01433 620373 or learning.discovery@peakdistrict.gov.uk

Peak District youngsters are showing they know what is special in the National Park by achieving a new award.  The Peak District Award celebrates people’s knowledge of the Peak District National Park’s special qualities, such as its wildlife, plants and local history.

It has been introduced by the Peak District National Park Authority to encourage people to find out about the place and earn recognition for their achievements. (more…)

A ‘Thank You’

We have received this note of thanks from Heather H:

I would like to thank everyone who bought biscuits, jewellery and bread over the Christmas period, helping me to fundraise for Childreach International. In particular, my 24hr fundraise made £100. To get the London Underground collection permit I needed to raise the most in my group. Well, I raised the 2nd highest amount putting me in a good position if there are any spare permits available. Thanks for helping me!
This is probably a good opportunity for me to explain the reason for all this fundraising. I’m studying at Nottingham University, and have signed up for an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this July. It involves raising £2,450 for the charity Childreach International before I even begin to climb the mountain itself! This charity helps children in countries like Tanzania, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. It operates in 3 main areas: health, education and human rights. It works with local communities  to help set up projects. For more information go to www.childreach.org.uk.
I have a lot of fundraising ideas which some of you have already supported (thanks again!). In addition anyone wishing to sponsor me should go to my BT Donate page (https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/heatherhughes1) where you can also follow my progress. I am really excited at the prospect of the double challenge of fundraising and the climb itself!
