PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
The greens are ‘greening’ up again after the drought conditions we were playing under. Not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing from our point of view. Only a few matches left in the 2018 season.
Tuesday League.
Away – Wirksworth – 21 August – 6.00pm.
Penultimate match for us in this league and we are still trying hard. Tony A and John B played well to get us off to a good start by winning 21 – 10. Pat B and Dot fought like Trogan’s coming back from being well down to losing 17 – 21. Captain Dawn and Frances, playing their best pair had a blinding result winning 21 – 15. Finally Edith and Rick could not quite give us another win losing 19 – 21. Although we shared the games 2 each we only dropped 6 points from the maximum 84. As well as the bowls it was the 80th birthday of one of the Wirksworth players and we enjoyed a few nibbles and a glass of wine. Congratulations Harold A. Here’s to the next 80.
Final match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 28 August – 6.00pm.
Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Park – 23 August – 1.45pm.
The star of Parwich Bowls at the moment is Ian J who, irrespective of who he plays with in the doubles, seems to come out on top. This week was no exception playing with Sue A they won 21 – 4. Audrey and Harry B also did us proud winning 21 – 8. You need a little luck in bowls and I think it fair to say that our third pair Keith B and Liz H did not have the ‘rub of the green’, but still managed a good 15 points. Matlock 33, Parwich 57.
There was a surprise in the singles with Frances (she who is the other half of our Tuesday pair with Dawn) losing. This, this year is a collectors item. Other members of the team however came through with Tony, John B and Dawn winning to 1, 3, and 4 respectively. Matlock 52, Parwich 79. Final score Matlock 85, Parwich 136.
Next Match – Home – Chatsworth A – 30 August – 1.45pm.
John B.

There’s still time to dig out your bike and get some oil on the chain and air in the tyres, in readiness for Monday’s Parwich Legion Bike Ride. The weather looks like it’s going to be perfect for cycling and the great news is, the route finishes with a long decent back into Parwich, so they’ll be no gasping for breath when you reach the bar for a well earned drink.
The route map and guide notes are provided below (click to enlarge) and markers will be set out to show you they way, so come along to join us for a 3pm depart.
If you have any questions please call Jon on 390075.

Jo (Joshua) Potter and his wife are staying in Parwich this week. He is a former evacuee who came here from Manchester when he was 7 in 1939. He and his younger brother were billetted with the Websters at Blanche Meadow Farm for some six years.
Catering 4 Parwich and Parwich Local History Society hosted a tea party this afternoon for people who attended Parwich School during WW2 to meet them and share memories. Despite several people being away the fifteen able to come had a very enjoyable time.

Our beloved family pet has late this afternoon been hit by a car. What is frustrating is that the person driving did not stop. Fortunately Petra died instantly.Could I please ask all those passing through the village to slow down, as it’s not only animals that I’m thinking about but children too. Just because it’s a 30 zone does not mean you drive at 30mph and or above!

Free workshops for new Dales businesses
Free coaching workshops are on offer in September for would-be entrepreneurs thinking of starting or growing a business in the Derbyshire Dales.
The three-hour sessions in Bakewell, Wirksworth and Sudbury are being delivered by Growing Rural Enterprise Ltd, which gives business support through the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Launchpad project in partnership with Derbyshire Dales District Council.
To book in, contact business mentor Julie White from Growing Rural Enterprise (GRE) on 07971 666474 or email info@growingruralenterprise.co.uk.
The sessions, aimed at start ups and businesses under 24 months old, take place at the District Council’s Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell on Thursday 20 September from 10am to 1pm and at Wellspring Church in Wirksworth on the same day from 4-7pm. The third workshop takes place at GRE’s office in Main Road, Sudbury, on Tuesday 25 September from 4-7pm.
With ‘match’ funding provided by the District Council, the project is also supported by the European Regional Development Fund, part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. Additional funding also comes from the SCR Combined Authority.
Julie, who runs GRE with fellow director Nick Platt, said: “These are free and focused workshops for people thinking of starting a business or working for themselves, delivered by passionate, impartial experts.”
GRE have been working with a range of businesses recently, including a dry stone waller, someone wishing to set up a campsite on the family farm and a woman who recycles adult clothing into baby and toddler clothes.
Leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, Councillor Lewis Rose OBE said: “These free workshops are a great opportunity for local businesses to grow, but also to network, improve their knowledge and learn about other support available in the area”

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
The season is rapidly coming to an end and as always seems to be the case our fortunes are rapidly declining also. As we approach the change of season from summer to autumn Parwichians must start early hibernation.
Tuesday League.
Away – Whitworth Park – 7 August – 6.00pm.
Although the games were shared two apiece we could not match Whitworth’s points count. Pat and John B gave us a good win as did the ever reliable Edith and Rick, but our other pairs losses were greater. At the time we were third in the league and although we lost we have still maintained third place, which is good as only the top two teams are promoted and we are more than happy spending our time down below. Whitworth 76, Parwich 65.
Home – Bakewell – 14 August – 6.00pm.
Again the games were shared. It’s becoming a habit as our losses were again heavier than Bakewell’s. Tony A and John B got their game together after a dodgy start and eventually won 21 – 11. Edith and Rick again battled to a good win after trailing for most of the game, 21 – 18. Similarly Dot and Sue A, although they lost, came back well from a terrible start to only lose by 7. Best not mention captain Dawn’s result suffice it to say our pair lost. We must start plummeting down the table soon. Parwich 64, Bakewell 71. Only two matches to go for this year.
Next match – Away – Wirksworth – 21 August – 6.00pm.
Thursday Friendly League.
No match because of the charity game The Greenaway. Normally we have done quite well as a Club, winning the trophy on quite a few occasions, but not this year. Rick came closest, but was knocked out in the quarter final. Still the Greenaway Centre benefited from a good day and Ian J couldn’t stop winning on the Tombola. Wonder what Iris is going to do with the plethora of really useless, sorry useful, prizes!
Next match – Home – Bradwell A – 16 August – 1.45pm.
Bradwell are second in the division by a long way so a hard match was in the offing and so it proved to be. However, if nothing else we do try very hard and Sue A and Ian J played their little sock off to give us a great win in the doubles 21 – 7. Our other pairs faired less well so after the doubles we trailed 36 – 49.
Now although the green is beginning to come back to life it is still incredibly tricky to play on and our singles players, although also playing their socks off couldn’t match Bradwell. Having said that John H could do no wrong and gave us a great win 15 – 1. It was unfortunately to no avail, Parwich 66, Bradwell 73. Final score Parwich 102, Bradwell 122. Not a bad result in the general scheme of things.
Next Match – Away – Matlock Park – 23 August – 1.45pm
John B.
