Not a bad place to live – part 2…

As the air was clear and the sun was bright, our roving reporter headed up the hill by Town Head and made his way to Minninglow to take a few pictures.

Particular thanks to Frank R and son, who kindly allowed their photograph to be taken whilst they were moving their sheep to a different field.

Film Night Tomorrow

Tomorrow – Friday 13th January – 7.45pm

Taken from the book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, this is the final adventure in the Harry Potter film series. In the much-anticipated epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizarding world escalates into an all-out war. The stakes have never been higher and no one is safe. But it is Harry Potter who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort. It all ends here.

“Sensational, satisfying, surreal … an explosive final chapter puts the magic back into the Harry Potter franchise” The Guardian. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Maggie Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Helen Bonham-Carter, etc, etc! This film broke all box-office records.

***NEW! Catering4Parwich will be serving Burgers (£2) and Sausage baps (£1.50), along with chips, tea, and sweets for the children. Come and have your Supper before the film showing! Or in the interval.***

Damage at the Memorial Hall

The gate at the back of the Memorial Hall has been badly damaged with both hinges being sheared off.

It not now possible to properly secure the garden area thus preventing children attending Stepping Stones from using the outside space for play.

The incident has been reported to the police. The Memorial Hall Management Committee would be grateful for any information about who might be responsible for the damage.

Pea & Pie Supper + Family Quiz

Stepping Stones pre-school are holding a Pea and Pie supper and Family Quiz on Saturday 11 February at 7:30pm in the Memorial Hall.

Tickets are priced at Adults £5.50 and Children £2.50.

Stepping Stones is a registered charity and although we receive some finding for the children we do rely heavily on donations and fundraising. The pre-school is run by a very small committee of mums and we all work extremely hard to ensure that the pre-school keeps going to provide a very valuable learning environment for children of ages 2-5 from the village and surrounding farms. So your support is extremely valuable and very much appreciated.

Tickets from Tracy Fentem, Vicky Yeomans and Gill Harrison

Dear resident,

We have recently introduced a new e-forum (email forum) to the Community Messaging Service, which will give you the chance to contribute to the setting of priorities in your neighbourhood.

As you may be aware, each of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams hold a meeting every three months to set priorities, offering residents the chance to select what their local police officers and other agencies target. The aim of our e-forum is to make it easier for you to have a say on priorities.

Click here to open the Derbyshire Community Messaging page, then scroll down to the bottom of that page  to tell us what you would like your team to target.

Your concerns will be sent to the Tissington area Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and they will discuss all responses at their next forum meeting which will be held on:

Thursday 19th January 2012 at 7.30pm at Tissington Village Hall.

Each team works in partnership with local agencies, which include parish, town, district and county councils, housing associations, Derbyshire Youth Service, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Neighbourhood Watch among others, to help keep your area a safe, clean and pleasant place to live.

Priorities can include a wide variety of issues, including anti-social or nuisance behaviour, graffiti or vandalism, speeding, parking or anything which you feel impacts on the quality of life for you and your neighbours.

You are still more than welcome to attend the meeting if you would prefer to speak to officers in person or you can also call our non emergency telephone number, 101.

You can be reassured that we will listen to your concerns, act on them and maintain our commitment to provide a high quality policing service to everyone in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.

Yours faithfully,

Chief Superintendent Peter Lewis
High Peak and Derbyshire Dales (B Division)

The class lasts for 3/4 of an hour and is followed by tea and cake.  The teacher is very experienced and the exercises can be adapted to suit all.  Some exercise sitting on a chair, others on a mat on the floor or you can use a chair for the whole time.

The cost is £4 per week, and this includes tea and cakes provided by Catering4Parwich, all on a pay as you go basis. For more information contact Val K 458 or just turn up on Wednesday.

This week the class is at the earlier time of 2.45pm.

Pilates – Thank You

A big thank you to all who came along to my first (ever) pilates  class – as teacher!  Despite some nerves I managed the whole routine,  with  two minor errors, which you were all kind enough to ignore.  I  enjoyed the experience and I hope you did too.  Hopefully I will see you regularly over the next six weeks.
Many thanks Sue

Pilates for the Over 60s

The pilates session on Wednesday 11 January will begin at 2.45 pm. It will be back to 3 pm from the following week.

A meeting was held on 3rd January 2012 to discuss the preparations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Our celebrations will be held on the extra Bank Holiday on Tuesday 5th June 2012.

A number of suggestions were raised by those that attended: Denis and Pauline Laycock, Nia Linnell, Matthew Harrison and Caroline Healy.

Initial ideas are:
 To hold a tea time street party on the stretch of road from the pub down towards Blanche Meadow (so that this stretch of road could be closed off)
 Entertainment for the children
 Live Music
 Fireworks
 Beacon lighting on Monday 4th June to join with the national beacon lighting and further beacon and fireworks on Tuesday 5th
 Lamplit Parade, using torches, tea lights or candles, led by an accordion player
 BBQ
 Celebration cake
 Commemorative mugs

A letter will be sent to every household to request a voluntary contribution towards the costs and the Village Societies will also be approached.

These are just initial thoughts and we would greatly appreciate any suggestions and help to help take the plans further.

The next meeting will be held at 7.30pm on 15th February in Parwich Memorial Hall

Everyone is welcome to attend so that we can plan together how to make this a memorable and enjoyable village celebration.

Caroline Healy Chair of Parwich Parish Council
Denis Laycock Chair of the Carnival and Recreation Committee

Just a reminder that Suttons orders are due with me by this Friday 6th January. Thanks to all of you who have already returned them.  Helen P

Each year the Parwich and District Horticultural Society order seeds from Suttons on behalf of their members. By doing this together we are eligible for a bulk order discount. This year the discount is likely to be 40%, but could be as high as 52% if we maintain the level of interest shown last year. The discount on all other catalogue items such as plants and seed potatoes has been increased to 15%.  For more details click here to read the original post.

Parwich Ladies Football Team, 1960

The Derby Telegraph recently published this photo of the Parwich Ladies Football team in 1960 (click to enlarge).

On the back row, from left: Christine Weston, Shirley Gibbs, Jean Calladine, Brenda Brownlee, Mary Edge, Hazel Calladine, Veronica Twigge.

On the front row: Maud Evans, Evelyn Chadwick, Carol Allen, Phyllis Allsop.

The “Little Sealed Packages” blog has also written about this photo. The blogger’s parents grew up in Parwich, and she has some further questions to ask about the photo. (Coincidentally, the Webster family are also mentioned, who have also been the subject of a recent query.)

Perhaps one of our readers would be able to reply to her?

Finally, from our own blog archives, we also have a poster advertising a ladies’ football match in 1938. Ladies’ football must have been a long-standing tradition in the village; could the tradition ever be revived?

Bin Day reminders for this week

So it is Friday 6th for the Green Bin and Saturday 7th for the Black Bin, next week it is back to normal with Green bin fortnightly on Thursdays and Black bin on Fridays.

A ‘Thank You’

We have received this note of thanks from Heather H:

I would like to thank everyone who bought biscuits, jewellery and bread over the Christmas period, helping me to fundraise for Childreach International. In particular, my 24hr fundraise made £100. To get the London Underground collection permit I needed to raise the most in my group. Well, I raised the 2nd highest amount putting me in a good position if there are any spare permits available. Thanks for helping me!
This is probably a good opportunity for me to explain the reason for all this fundraising. I’m studying at Nottingham University, and have signed up for an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this July. It involves raising £2,450 for the charity Childreach International before I even begin to climb the mountain itself! This charity helps children in countries like Tanzania, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. It operates in 3 main areas: health, education and human rights. It works with local communities  to help set up projects. For more information go to www.childreach.org.uk.
I have a lot of fundraising ideas which some of you have already supported (thanks again!). In addition anyone wishing to sponsor me should go to my BT Donate page (https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/heatherhughes1) where you can also follow my progress. I am really excited at the prospect of the double challenge of fundraising and the climb itself!

Second hand books offered

Debbie W writes:

I don’t know if anyone is having a fund raiser anytime soon which will include a second hand book stall?

If so, I’ve had a bit of a clear out and anyone is welcome to quite a few books I’ve cleared out (a mix of modern and classics), otherwise I’ll pop them down to a charity shop.

Thanks,
Debbie W, phone 568
