Would-be archaeologists and stargazers are invited to meet the experts to explore ancient history and the night sky from a prehistoric stone circle on Sunday December 4th.
Nottingham Trent University in partnership with the Peak Park are offering 60 free places for people to find out more about the Nine Ladies stone circle, on Stanton Moor, both on the ground and in the night sky.
Three two-hour sessions will take place on Sunday December 4, at 12noon, 2pm, and 4pm, starting at the Village Hall in Stanton in Peak, near Bakewell.
The events will include a short talk on the history of the stone circle, what to look out for in the night sky in December, a planetarium session and a 15-minute walk to the stone circle. The 4pm session will include a look at the night sky through telescopes (weather permitting).
Booking is essential as each session is limited to 20 people. A waiting list will be used to prioritise bookings for future events. Dogs are not allowed. To book call 0115 8483518 or email daniel.brown02@ntu.ac.uk Continue Reading »

Congratulations are due to the organisers of Pikehall’s Y-Not Festival, for their double victory at this year’s UK Festival Awards.
Y-Not were victorious in two categories: the “grass roots” festival award, and the award for having the best toilets of any festival in the UK, big or small!
As no other British festival (no, not even Glastonbury!) managed to win two awards, this is a fantastic achievement, and proof positive that we have a truly wonderful annual event on our doorstep.

There will be no Over 60’s Pilates this Wednesday, 16 November, as Tricia is in Sheffield, but there will be a class each Wednesday thereafter, until the 14 December.

Catering4Parwich has been popping up on the blog a lot recently. Just in case you don’t know, it’s a fantastic “new” non-profit making organisation run by Val Kirkham for the benefit of our community.
Originally it was set up in 2009/10 as a means to obtain funding for kitchen equipment for the new Memorial Hall. One of the conditions of the grant was to set up a micro-enterprise so that all profit, once food costs and wages have been deducted, goes back into the Memorial Hall.
The funding committee and Val created this organisation and now Val is totally responsible for all aspects of Catering4Parwich. During a normal week Val and Alison work about 6-8 hours a week but this goes up significantly when there are functions. Casual staff, normally local youngsters, are employed for such events, so if you would like to add your name to her list, please contact her. Some village functions like yesterday’s very successful lunch use volunteers, this helps to keep the price down to a minimum, with everyone only having to pay £5 for a two course meal.
During the past year Catering4Parwich has supported many events, both in the village and locally. Every week food is provided for the British Legion Darts Club and teas for the Over 60’s Pilates. Other events include the Oddfellows Lunch, Harvest Supper, lunches for new candidates for the teaching post at Parwich School, two Lent lunches, the Royal Wedding Event, lunches for a local and a national gardening group, teas for an art exhibition and the monthly film club.
C4P’s biggest event was catering for 512 people during the Archbishop of Canterbury’s visit to Ashbourne, smaller events included Parkside Junior School’s Prom and a local funeral.
Already this non-profit making organisation has bought additional equipment for the kitchen, including an electric bain-marie, pans, vegetable dishes, a water boiler, a portable gas griddle and two portable ceramic hot plates. Items they are looking to purchase in the future include a fryer, microwave and quality cutlery for weddings.
Val has produced flyers to market C4P but word of mouth is her best source of bookings, which are already coming in for 2012.

The latest event organised by Catering4Parwich, “Parwich Lunch”, had its inaugural meal today. Sixteen adults and two children enjoyed a lovely chicken and vegetable casserole with dumplings followed by apple pie and custard. There was a great atmosphere and lots of talking.
Everyone was very quick to sign up for the next lunch on Monday 19th December – Turkey and all the trimmings, followed by Christmas Pud or Trifle, other dietary requirements can happily be catered for. At £5 it is a real bargain, next month Martin C will be showing a film after the lunch for those who would like to stay on. If you haven’t booked ring Val on 458.
Future Lunch Dates
Always held in the Memorial Hall at 12.45pm – £5
Monday, December 19th
Monday, January 16th
Monday, February 13th
Monday, March 12th

Sutton Seeds & Ferndale Lodge
Each year the Parwich and District Horticultural Society order seeds from Suttons on behalf of their members. By doing this together we are eligible for a bulk order discount. This year the discount is likely to be 40%, but could be as high as 52% if we maintain the level of interest shown last year. The discount on all other catalogue items such as plants and seed potatoes has been increased to 15%.
By now those of you who ordered last year should have received your catalogue and order form, which should be returned to me before 6th January 2012. If you have already completed your order, please return it to me so that I can start filling in the paperwork.
Remember that you only pay for your goods once you have received them all. Payment is to PDHS via myself and not Suttons.
If you would like to place an order but have not done so before please let me know, so that I can get a catalogue to you. The only requirement is that you are a member of the PDHS, which costs just £2 per year.
At the AGM there were a few copies of the Ferndale Lodge (garden equipment specialists) catalogue. If you took one home, please let me know as I have the order forms and account number. You are entitled to a discount of 15% on all orders.
Happy gardening. Helen (362)

This project was undertaken by the Marshalls, which they started at the beginning of May, taking only 19 weeks to complete. Tony and Shaun did all the work themselves apart from the electrics and plumbing. They thought it might be interesting to show the work involved in a new build property from start to finish.
The 3 bedroomed detached house in Uttoxeter, is now on the market with Bagshaws at £159,950. For full details click here.

Stepping Stones Pre–School Parwich
As you are probably aware Stepping Stones is our very own village run Pre-School and each year we rely on donations to keep us running.
As part of our fundraising agenda we will be holding our annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday 26th November 12 – 4pm in the Memorial Hall, Parwich.
We will be hosting an array of stalls, and would gratefully receive any donations of tombola prizes, raffle prizes or yummy treats for our cake stall.
We ask for your support for this event, more the merrier.
Come along on the day and enjoy, fun for all the family….…and as always your support does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.
Donations may be left with any of the Pre-School staff (Memorial Hall before 9am Mon – Fri) or contact Katy Wayne 390 419
Many Thanks

Shoppers in the Derbyshire Dales can get their hands on free purse chains to help keep them safe during the run up to Christmas.
The police and Derbyshire Dales District Council have joined forces to provide the chains as part of a bid to prevent purse thefts in Bakewell, Ashbourne and Matlock.
They can be used to attach the purse to a zip inside a handbag, to make it more difficult for the purse to be stolen and increase the chances of alerting the shopper, who might feel the purse being ‘tugged’. It can be easy to become distracted while you are out and about browsing the shops but we would always urge people to make sure that they keep their handbags zipped up and their purse out of sight.
In Ashbourne people can get hold of the chains by calling at the Ashbourne News Telegraph office on Market Place or from Ashbourne police station, Compton Road.
Tips for safer shopping include: Continue Reading »

The exact detail is still unknown, but on that day, the 800g torch will have gone up the Heights of Abraham at Matlock, through Darley Dale, Bakewell, Buxton, Ashbourne and then will stay overnight in Derby. On the Friday evening there will be events to celebrate its arrival in the city.

Residents in Ashbourne and the surrounding villages are being advised to make sure they use grit fairly and sensibly during the winter months. It is after reports that during the cold spell last year, some residents had taken grit from roadside bins for use on their own driveways.
PCSO Kate Cleveley of the Tissington Area Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It was disappointing to hear that last year a few individuals took grit that is provided to keep road users and pedestrians safe on the highways, and used it on their own personal property.
“Grit bins are provided by the council in various locations, usually in villages or on untreated roads, so that residents and businesses can keep roads or pavements free from snow and ice.
“These grit bins must be used to clear public pavements and roads only and are not for use on private property.”
Police have advised that taking grit from the public bins for use on private property can be classed as theft.
PCSO Cleveley added: “Not only would you risk prosecution if you are found to be taking grit from public bins for domestic use, but you could also be putting other people’s safety at risk. Homeowners have a responsibility to buy their own supplies of salt to keep their driveways or pathways clear. Please use public salt supplies responsibly.”
You can report problems with grit bins to Derbyshire County Council on 08456 058 058.
