Nia has emailed in to say a big thank you to everyone who supported her in the High Peak Marathon, she raised £1229.38p and as a group they topped £2,500 which is amazing. This money is going to help Isabelle, a 7 year old who has lost part of all her limbs after being diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia and this is the email from Isabelle’s family…
Just a quick note to say a big thank-you for your fundraising for Isabelle’s trust fund. We were overwhelmed to receive such a significant amount and therefore thank you for all your efforts. It sounds amazing to undertake a run like that – particularly in the dark!
All money raised for Isabelle is going to be spent carefully, and will be used to provide for her throughout her life. Our main objective is to ensure that she is able to live her life as independently as possible, and so for example it may be house adaptations or advanced prosthesis that are necessary. At present it is too early to say what will be possible! We are planning to get a website up and running to keep all Isabelle’s supporters updated on progress and plans.
Again, many thanks!
Olly, Cathy and Isabelle

Weather conditions this week provided a treat for those who were out and about around sunrise. The cold nights, coupled with sunny mornings, created a low mist that was quite beautiful. Here are a couple of photos taken last Tuesday morning…
The first picture was taken looking towards Ballidon from the outskirts of Parwich. The second two were taken from the hill on the way into Bradbourne.

The national census is due to take place on 27th March 2011, run by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in England and Wales, so please ensure you fill it out.
2011 Census requires everyone to be counted at the address where they usually live. Anyone away from home on census day, Sunday 27 March, must be included on the household questionnaire for their usual address.
Away or on holiday – If everyone in the household is away on census day please complete and return your questionnaire before you go or as soon as possible afterwards. Remember to make sure your answers are about your household on census day. Your questionnaire needs to include all people who usually live at this address. This means that you should include everyone for whom this is their permanent or family home, even if they are working or studying away from home. If you are staying at another address in the United Kingdom (UK) on census night you should be included as a visitor on the questionnaire for that address.
The census is a count of the population which is completed in the UK every ten years to find out more about who we are as a nation. The data is used to help government and local authorities decide how best to plan, fund and deliver the everyday services we all need – like housing, education, healthcare and transport.
The census have been posted out to households in early March and can be completed online or sent back via a pre-paid envelope.
Please note that residents who return their completed questionnaires promptly (before 6 April) will not be contacted by the census field staff. All census staff will carry an ID card with a photo, logo and hologram. Staff will not ask for details such as credit card details, bank accounts or password etc. Please be vigilant and bear in mind that only registered staff will carry out this work. If you are not sure ring the number that will be on their ID card. If you are still concerned get them checked out before letting anyone into your home!
To find out more about census 2011, please click on general information and for more details about the circumstances in which census field staff may make contact with residents click here. Remember that field staff may call after 6 April.

Electric Bike Network – “It’s cycling – but not as we know it. Electric bicycles dismiss headwinds and flatten hills. Anyone can now enjoy the great outdoors on two wheels.”
Having received an invitation to attend the small and informal launch at Carsington Water of the Electric Bicycle Network, I decided to go along and find out more about this social enterprise. The launch is supported by the Carsington Water sports centre.
The aim of this initiative, well established in other, hilly(!) countries such Switzerland, is to establish a network of hire-points, such as campsites, B&B’s, s/c cottages, hotels, and charge points, such as pubs, cafés etc., i.e. anywhere where the cyclist may want to stop off to enjoy lunch or refreshments.
Whilst the launch was primarily aimed at representatives of visitor accommodation, pubs, cafés etc., there may also be some interest amongst local residents.
As a potential ‘Hire point’, it is very doubtful that participation by a single s/c cottage would bring in sufficient revenue from hiring out the bikes to guests to cover the cost of hiring (the minimum of) two electric bicycles from the support hub, i.e. Carsington Water, including back-up support etc. However, there may be potential for a cluster of visitor accommodation, which could possibly also be boosted by some local interest.
Further information can be found on the Electric Bicycle Network website.
I would be really interested to hear not only from other s/c cottages but also from local people who are mildly intrigued by this exciting initiative so I can gauge the level of interest in and around the village.
And yes, I had a go on one of the bikes, which was dead-easy to ride, and, whilst a little heavier than an ordinary bike, was much lighter than the older versions of electric bicycles.

Parwich artist Esther Tyson is working on a project to immortalise the seahorses of Dorset in art – but first of all, she has to learn to swim underwater! Esther’s project diary continues below…
Day Five.
I’ve moved from the pool at Sandybrook to the 25m pool in Ashbourne Leisure Centre.
Every pool I’ve swum in has had a gradual grade to the final depth, but here it’s ever so sudden: half way, the depth plummets! In my first swim, it took me completely by surprise; coughing and spluttering, I grasped the rail whilst composing myself.
Back to the present day: looking at the length and wondering how it will go. It’s a long way… Continue Reading »

Note added 4th March 2017 by Steve J.
This post still seems to be getting quite a few views. A good source for oil, not available when the post was originally written is the village oil club, details of which can be found here
This email has come in from Keith P requesting information.
Last October I ordered 2200 litres of heating oil on the internet from Go Locate Fuel. It was 1.6 pence a litre cheaper (£35 total) than the price quoted by Peak Oil on the same day. Who delivered it? Peak Oil! However my tank would only take 2034 litres, and despite the promise of Go Locate Fuel to refund any amount less than that ordered I have not received said refund of £70. And the likelihood of receiving it seems slim, since I have since found a website full of complaints about Go Locate – many, many people claiming to have paid hundreds of pounds and not receiving fuel at all. So I feel lucky that I received nearly all I ordered, even though it was delivered late. I will not be using them again and recommend anybody contemplating doing so to check out the internet reviews of this company first.
That said, hope springs eternal. I have just ordered from Halso at what I thought was a competitive price by paying with a debit card when placing the order. Hours later I found another website called Boiler Juice which has been running since 2004. When I put in a request for a quote it turned out 0.45 pence per litre cheaper than I had just paid! On 2000 litres that’s £9.00 cheaper. Before I commit myself to dealing with this website in future, has anyone in the village any experience of dealing with Boiler Juice? Are they reliable? Keith Parsons.

Firstly, I know that I missed a post in February, but as it is such a short month, I’m hoping that it doesn’t count! Anyway, here is some fantastic news to eclipse my tardiness :
Parwich First Responders have not 1 but 3 new volunteers awaiting training. This really is fantastic as we appeared to be dwindling fast. Not that this news should put off anyone who might have been considering swelling our ranks since the more of us there are, the greater our coverage of the weekly rota. There is usually someone on holiday or just too busy with work and other commitments to be able to respond.
Our group met to train last month. It was particularly useful to refresh our memories of how to administer oxygen since guidelines and methods appear to change with alarming frequency. We always practise our resuscitation skills using training dollies. This is critical for all of us because unlike paramedics we are not constantly being called out to put our training into practice. Without our ongoing training we would quickly become rusty and lose confidence in our abilities.
There have been two call-outs for the group in the last 2 months. An incident to which we were not called was the one involving the air ambulance. Villagers may not be aware that East Midlands Ambulance Service do not send Community First Responders to incidents involving trauma (to the body, not to us, although this is actually precisely why we are not sent to attend young children). Thankfully the casualty in this case has made a full recovery in no small part due to the calmness of those at the scene and the skill of the helicopter pilot in landing on such difficult terrain. This incident also highlights the value for all of us in acquiring some basic First Aid skills – you never know when you might be in a position to use them, even as a passer-by.
Please remember to call 999 in the event of any emergency. The responder on call (providing we have a volunteer available) will then be contacted directly by EMAS. Please do not waste time scrabbling round for personal telephone numbers of people who might not even be in the village at the time.
Finally, thank you to our new volunteers!

The A52s would be delighted to play for you this evening , Saturday 19th March, in The Parwich Legion. The set will start around 8.30pm.
The band will be adding a slight irish tinge to their normal blend of folk and acoustic rock in honour of St. Patrick’s Day….or maybe to ease the pain of the defeat Ireland will surely receive at the hands of the England Rugby Team today!
Everyone is welcome! Admission free!

On Monday there was a post requesting information about a piece of furniture, a settle, that seems to have made its way from Alsop to Australia. Whilst there is no more detail about its origin, Richard has sent in more more photos as a result of Peter T’s comment.
The uprights appear to be original, however he is correct with the latin writing piece as it has been attached to some ply wood, along with the pieces either side of it. That said they appear to be ancient. Who knows whether they are orininal and how thay may have been attached.
I have added some close up shots too as they show two coats of arms. Perhaps Peter is able to generate a comment about them. I have also added a close up of a carbing in the box section. Thanks Richard W, Melbourne, Australia

Sketch pads and pencils are needed for the next guided cycle ride on the Monsal Trail.
The Tour de Sketch ride, organised by the National Park Authority’s Pedal Peak District project, is to take place on Sunday March 27, 10am-3pm. Booking is essential, as spaces are limited, on start@pedalready.co.uk or 0114 2412775.
Pedal Peak District’s Carol Parsons said: “The Tour de Sketch ride is designed to encourage people to use their bikes for reasons other than for travel and fitness. This guided ride will be at a leisurely pace along the Monsal Trail with international ‘Sketch Crawl’ artist Lynne Chapman and her roving sketchers.
“The ride will give people the opportunity to explore the architecture and landscape of the former railway line between Bakewell and Thornbridge by pedal and with their pencils!”
The event is free of charge but places must be pre-booked. Participants need to bring a sketchbook and pencil as well as their own bicycle. The event will start from the car park at Hassop Station café and bookstore (DE45 1NW).
Pedal Ready trainers will be on hand to offer cycling advice and tips during the day.
*********************************************************************************************
The Peak District National Park Authority is improving the existing Monsal Trail between Bakewell and Wye Dale by opening new sections through the tunnels for cyclists, walkers and horse riders to use.
The work is part of the £2.25 million Pedal Peak District project, which has also included a marketing campaign to encourage more people to go cycling in the Peak District National Park.
The new route through the former railway tunnels is expected to open to the public in May or June, this year
