Next challenge John, Patti’s swallows!

Summer swallows?

Our first pair of swallows returned today – they swirled and chattered around the stables, diving in and out of the doors.

We are always happy to see them and feel that summer is coming.

Parwich Bowls Club – update

We had our first practice session on Monday night. A new lady member came down to have a try. Very good too. We also had two young men ( aged 11 and 10 ) who also played a number of ‘ends’ A good evening all round.

Our first league match takes place this Thursday at home. As was mentioned in the earlier comment, it is against Bradwell. The match starts at 1.45pm and usually finishes at about 4.15/4.30pm.

If you have the time on Thursday afternoon, why not come to the green and have a look? You may even get a nice cup of tea or coffee.

John B

This trip is open to all members and adult non-members. There are currently places available on the coach for anyone who wishes to go on the trip, who has not already reserved a place.

Plenty of bird activity

Two curlews and a lapwing can be seen in the fields around Ballidon, where there is plenty of activity. JF-S

Events for St George’s Day

We have been getting the Green ready for the start of the season. Our first league match is on Thursday afternoon, at home against Bradwell.

Bradwell finished a little below us in the league last season, so we will hope to do well against them next week. Details of the result will be put on the web.

Prior to the match however, we need to get some practice in. It is always difficult, as the weather is usually against us to get the Green sorted by April. Anyway, we will be going down to the Green at 6.30 pm on Monday night ( 4 April 2011 ). We would greatly welcome anybody who would like to try Crown Green Bowls.

Why not come and have a try? All you need is a pair of flat shoes. We have the bowls.

See you on the Green at 6.30 pm tomorrow.

Swimming underwater: Part Three.

Parwich artist Esther Tyson is working on a project to immortalise the seahorses of Dorset in art – but first of all, she has to learn to swim underwater! Esther’s project diary continues below…

Day Seven.

I couldn’t repeat the last session – my face is burning from all the failed attempts at holding my breath. I settle into the more comfortable rhythm of breathing out through my nose underwater and in through my mouth above water.

Did I say more comfortable? When did that happen? I swim half a mile!

Day Eight.

Talking to Matt this evening, I feel reasonably… confident. Famous last words! It looks like Thursday night will be my first scuba session – and as I don’t have a wetsuit, it will be swimsuit with T-shirt.

I wasn’t too concerned, until he mentioned I may have to do the mask clearing at depth: 18 metres.  Another day; thank goodness the pool isn’t that deep!

Day Nine.

I’m sat in the corridor at the baths and was OK until a moment ago; never mind flooding my mask, my mind is flooded with madness. Surrounded by all these guys, scuba gear, noise, the reality of the situation suddenly dawns: I’m going to have to do this.

The guys have a prep talk, one of the girls talks of her recent instructor training and I’m sat with my mind racing.  All I have to do is clear my mask, and all I want to do is leave! Continue Reading »

A very special visit.

UPDATE: We hope you enjoyed this April Fool’s post. Needless to say, not a word of it is true!

PARWICH.ORG is delighted to announce some very exciting news for the village. The Prince William and his new wife, Catherine, are planning to spend some time in Parwich as part of their honeymoon tour of the UK. Although the exact date is still being kept as a strict state secret, we can confirm that they will be staying at Tom’s Barn for two nights in the spring.

In order to provide the happy couple with maximum privacy during their stay, residents of Monsdale Lane will be asked to vacate their homes for the duration of the royal visit. However, special four-poster camp beds will be provided in the Memorial Hall for all those affected.

To mark the event, a “red white and blue” Royal Wedding tulip has been specially bred and bulbs have already been secretly planted along Monsdale Lane. Fingers crossed that they will be at their peak, to coincide with the royal visit.

Additionally, some of the village twitchers have been secretly training our small population of Jenkins Thrushes to incorporate parts of the National Anthem into their song.

Glasses found

Found – pair of pink metal framed specs outside the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening.

Deposits for the trips to Harlow Carr and/or Felley Priory and Hebb’s farmhouse can be paid to Rebecca tonight at the film show.

Two great trips

Wednesday 25th May – RHS Harlow Carr – departure 9am

Harlow Carr is the Royal Horticultural Society’s northern garden. Rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias should be a highlight at this time of year. As well as the extensive gardens there is a shop and plant centre and Betty’s Café tea rooms.

We can offer this trip to society members at the bargain price of £8! Entry is free, as the society is affiliated to the RHS. There will be an additional charge of £2 for those wishing to have a tour. Non members can either join the society at a cost of £2 or pay the entry fee of £7.50 ( free to RHS members).

Wednesday 13th July – Felley Priory and Hebb’s Farmhouse – departure 9.30am

In the morning we will visit Felley Priory Gardens in Nottinghamshire (left) a private garden and plant nursery. We will have lunch there and then there is a short drive to Hebb’s farmhouse, Stuart Dixon’s garden. Stuart gave a talk to the society in 2009 and he will show us round his garden; followed by tea and scones.

The cost for this trip is £10, it includes tea and scones at Hebb’s Farmhouse and and entry to both gardens. If however you are an RHS member, entry into Felley Priory is free and the total cost of the trip will be reduced to £7.00.

In order to keep transport costs to a minimum, from April 1st these trips will be opened to non society members. Please can members pay their £5 deposit by Thursday 31st March to secure a place.

Please let Rebecca Jordan, Knob Hall, have your payments. These details and forms have been delivered to all society members.

Film night: Friday April 15th

From the director of Calendar Girls comes a new comedy-drama with an all-star British cast.

The film stars the award winning Sally Hawkins as Rita O’Grady, who is the catalyst for the 1968 Ford Dagenham strike by 187 sewing machinists which led to the advent of the Equal Pay Act. Working in extremely impoverished conditions and for long arduous hours, the women at the Ford Dagenham plant finally lay down their tools when they are reclassified as “unskilled”.

With humour, common sense and courage they take on their corporate paymasters, an increasingly belligerent local community, and finally the government itself. The leader of the women’s struggle is fast-talking, no nonsense Rita, whose fiery temper and occasionally hilarious unpredictability proves to be a match for any of her male opponents, and is echoed by Barbara Castle’s struggle in the male-dominated House of Commons.

The film stars a host of Britain’s finest acting talent, including Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, It’s A Wonderful Afterlife), Bob Hoskins (The Long Good Friday, Mona Lisa), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), and Rosamund Pike (Pride & Prejudice, An Education).

Dear resident,

We have recently introduced a new e-forum (email forum) to the Community Messaging Service, which will give you the chance to contribute to the setting of priorities in your neighbourhood.

As you may be aware, each of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams hold a meeting every three months to set priorities, offering residents the chance to select what their local police officers and other agencies target.

The aim of our e-forum is to make it easier for you to have a say on priorities.

Simply email trisha.mellor.5197@derbyshirecommunitymessaging.org and tell us what you would like your team to target.

Your concerns will be sent to the Tissington Area Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and they will discuss all responses at their next forum meeting which will be held on:

Wednesday 6th April at 7.30pm at St. Edmunds Church, Fenny Bentley. Continue Reading »

Waitrose at Buxton have included Parwich CFR in their Community Charity Scheme for April, so if you happen to shop there, please use your green tokens to support Parwich First Responders.

Parwich.org has received this message and the latest post from Major Benjamin Ingham of the Royal Artillery.

It was great to receive so many positive comments from my last post and I have been in touch with another Parwich member who has recently arrived in Afghanistan, we are hoping to meet up in the near future. The offer to send through parcels is exceptionally kind but we are well catered for and the main support that we, in the Armed Forces, value more is the continued support from family, friends and acquaintances.

The cold winter nights have been quickly replaced by the dry heat of the Afghan summer, there is no transition as one would expect in the UK, and in the course of a week the snow has melted leading to a dusty smog filled atmosphere that sits within the Kabul basin.  Due to a lack of consistent electricity, the local population has scourged the landscape of all trees for firewood and thus the slightest breeze creates billowing clouds of dust.  With Kabul being located 6000ft above mean sea level within a bowl at the base of the Hindu Kush Mountain range, effectively the start of the Himalayas, the air is trapped and develops into a polluted smog.

The last opportunity to make use of the clear winter mornings came a few weeks ago and 140 personnel stationed at the Kabul Airbase turned out to take part in the Kabul ½ Marathon.  The course was set to follow the camp and airfield perimeter and, although considerably flatter than the Parwich Annual Hill Race, the distance more than made up for the lack of topography.

A three week persistent cough, brought on by the afore-mentioned appalling air quality, was still lingering but I managed to motivate myself to complete the route at the end of a 12 hour working night shift.  All that kept me going was the thought of getting a good day’s rest and I finished in a modest time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.  Post race and a small earth tremor followed by a faulty fire alarm brought a hasty end to any sleep I was hoping to get and therefore the only option was to head back to the office for another night shift.  Continue Reading »

Tennis Club AGM – Friday

Pupdate!

The Parwich puparazzi were kindly invited once more into Jill L’s home to find out how Maisy’s puppies are getting on.

We are delighted to report Brizzle, Isla, Digger, Sam, Oscar and Nelson are all doing swimmingly. They have been eating well and on nice days have been exploring the yard outside. They have had a big day out today to get their injections.

In two weeks time, the pups will all be heading for good homes as far afield as Scotland. Nelson will be going to the daughter of a friend of Jill’s in her walking group, so he will be able to go for long walks with mum and grandma.

Finally, Jill wishes to make an appeal to the village. For the next two weeks, if you have any spare newspaper, she would be very very grateful for it! Drop it round at Wheatsheaf Cottage.

Final call for any members wanting to go on the trips to RHS Harlow Carr on Wednesday 25th May and Felley Priory and Hebb’s farmhouse on Wednesday 13th July. Please pay your deposits to Rebecca Jordan, Knob Hall, by the end of this month; after which we will open up the seats to non members to ensure we can fill the coaches. If you are coming to our film show on Thursday, Rebecca will collect deposits there.
