On 22nd June I wrote to Mike Gerrard-Pearse to complain about his statement at the Hall AGM that non-local and business rates had now bee set for use of the new Hall.

Excellent news from David G, who is delighted to report that Christine is back from hospital. He and Christine would like to thank all the kind people for their cards and good wishes which have been wonderful to receive. Christine will get round to writing to thank everybody when she is feeling a bit stronger.
At the moment she is building up her strength and still needs a lot of rest so if you are thinking of planning a visit please ring David first.
Tomorrow is bulk rubbish collection day; the dustcart picks up at various points in the village. Remember if you leave rubbish to be removed, you must be in attendance when the wagon comes and load your rubbish, yourself. Don’t lose it, use it.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service have begun a new campaign in an attempt to change the common perception of fire, “It will never happen to us”. Hopefully this will prompt members of the community to ensure that fire prevention measures are in place within their homes/businesses, ie smoke alarms, escape plans etc.

I have mentioned to some of you that a couple of friends and I have formed a flute-cello-piano trio which will be giving a concert next Tuesday evening in Derby. The programme is entirely French – a trio by Debussy written when he was 18, a trio by Faure written when he was 77, and a rather sentimental piece by the flautist Philippe Gaubert (no, I hadn’t heard of him either, but it’s rather fun in a kind of pre-First World War way).
I think the concert is free, but you have to pay 25 pence for coffee and biscuits (see the attached programme).
This is something of a new departure for me, and it’s been great to find a very lively amateur musical environment here in Nottingham. If any of you can come that would be fantastic!

My trusty old Epson Stylus Color 760 printer has just passed over to the Other Side. It died with all lights blinking. It is much missed. It leaves behind three unused colour cartridges and an unused black cartridge. These are available free to anybody who wants them, together with the printer itself, if you have the competence to revive it. In reference to the blinking lights, the online help page says, ‘refer to dealer for maintenance‘. Just call Keith at Fernlea House, opposite the Village Hall.

I note with interest the Parwich rainfall statistics. This current fall of heavy rain brings back unpleasant memories!
To my way of thinking, the 2008 flooding was a consequence of the ground being soaked during the previous week to the flood and then a downpour with nowhere to go. Looking back, the 2008 rainfall data shows a wet week followed by heavy rain on Friday (32mm) and heavy rain Saturday (40mm). The floods occured early Saturday morning so I guess that most of the Saturday’s 40mm were in the early hours and thus very intense. The cumulative rainfall for that week tots up to 97mm.
I’ve totted up the rainfall for this week and got 43.9mm and thus told myself not to panic.
Is it possible for ‘The Weatherman’ to keep a rolling weekly total of rainfall and then notify us all when it reaches say 50mm? Thus we could prepare our lifeboats in case the next day yields a damaging 40mm rainfall.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on the subject? I’m sure I’m not the only home owner with one eye on the clouds!
A drier week to come with no repeat of Friday’s 40mm; the wettest day since September 2008 when Friday 5th saw 32mm and Saturday 6th saw 40mm. The weekend of the floods.

Derbyshire Dales District Council have an exciting new sports initiative called Derbyshire Village Games.
Villages across rural Derbyshire will be able to start new sports clubs and activities, host festivals and competitions. A village games co-ordinator has been appointed to provide support,advice and guidance to communities who want more and better sports opportunities within their local area. This will be discussed at the Parish Council meeting on Tuesday 05 October 2010.
If there is interest in the initiative the Parish Council will invite the co-ordinator to a meeting. Please contact the clerk on ppccl@fsmail.net
Is this of interest in relation to any of our existing events (Wakes Hill Race or Parwich Panoramic Five) or to the existing clubs/groups (bowls, tennis, cricket, pilates, etc)? Alternatively will this be relevant to possible new activities in the new Memorial Hall (e.g. badmington, indoor bowls, yoga)?

Road safety is an issue raised by our readers at regular intervals, as illustrated by the post last Saturday, which has attracted a lot of interest and comments sharing the author’s concerns. Here are a couple of earlier posts on the same topic:
The Village Action Group raised the idea of the Parwich roads as a shared space (pedestrians having priority) including a 20mph speed limit with the Peak Park who are supportive of the idea. (These ideas grew out of the traffic survey undertaken in preparation for the new Memorial Hall planning application.)
Parwich Parish Council regularly discuss roads and footpaths at their monthly meetings. So look out for details of the next meeting.

Thank you to Lynne Burrow, Area Peak Park Ranger, for information relating to a voluntary restriction for motor vehicles on Gallowlow Lane, south of Mininglow over the winter and the erection of drive with care signs on Green Lane near Pikehall. It also explains how the action being taken on these lanes links to wider work that the National Park is carrying out to address problems caused by motor vehicle activity in the Peak District, which may also be of interest. The restriction/signs refer to motor vehicles and not pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders:

The use of the Peak District landscape by 4x4s, quad bikes, trail bikes and other motorsport enthusiasts is one area that often arouses strong emotions. Concerns often centre around motorsports causing:
Damage to the landscape
Noise disruption to residents
Potential safety issues for other users, like walkers or cyclists.

Added 30/9/10. Thank you to Mike G for pointing out that the Parwich switch over is in two parts: the first on 17th Aug 2011 involves BBC2 analogue being switched off, and the second on 31st Aug 2011 when all the other analogue channels are switched off.
The authors of Parwich Heights have been indisposed over the Summer. One took a villa in Tuscany and had a fling with a tempestuous Italian painter. Another became a stowaway in a merchant vessel that survived terrible storms in the Indian ocean. Yet another retired to her scottish castle and composed her magnum opus – concerto for bagpipes and orchestra.
But the summer is at an end and duty tugs at the heartstrings of each of our creative dream weavers. The demands of an expectant public cannot go unheeded for ever. The next instalment of Parwich Heights is about to be published! The hour has been chosen: midnight on Friday October 1st. No queueing outside bookshops is necessary – the Parwich Heights website will suffice.

From the 19th of November to the 1st January Tom is appearing in White Christmas in the Sunderland Empire. This is a great theatre from the heyday of Music Hall.
Rumor has it that there may be a coach trip being organised from Parwich to see White Christmas, so if you are interested watch this space or speak to Stuart.

How can I find words to thank you for all the love and comfort that you have shown to Andrew during his illness, and now to me and my family as we face life without him.
Your wonderful cards, phone calls and offers of help brought Andrew much happiness and encouragement as I took them into hospital each day. He just loved Parwich, and all of you, and our years of retirement here were some of the happiest of our lives.
It was so comforting that he knew of the love that surrounded him. We just wish that he could have seen everyone at work in the Church getting ready for the funeral service. Thank you for all the beautiful flowers and foliage you brought from your gardens, and all the time and skill you gave so freely to make the Church look so beautiful. My family and I found it very moving to see you all at work and hear the shared memories of Andrew’s life here.
And now the healing goes on as I receive your loving messages of sympathy. Two passages in the Bible were very special to us – Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; they who believe in me shall never die” and “Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.
There is likely to be an interruption to the water supply to Parwich this week for ‘essential maintenance of the water main’ (Severn Trent ref Fcr 8344). The notice I received (on the Green) stated the following times:
Wednesday 29th September: from 8am to 6pm
Do let us know (via parwich@hotmail.co.uk or in a comment below) if you have different days or times, and how large an area is involved. Not everyone seems to have got a letter. If your water is cut off beyond the notified times or you are not give 48 hours notification of scheduled work you may be entitled to compensation. Severn Trent can be contacted on tel. 0800 783 4444, for more information.
While the water supply is disrupted Severn Trent say not to try to use any mains water, including flushing toilets and hot water. So you will need to set up emergency supplies. One option for flushing toilets is to fill the bath in advance with cold water and then use buckets to flush the toilet. Do you have any other useful tips?
PS Be careful not to leave any taps turned on during the interruptions. In the past several local households were flooded as a result of this with the water coming back on at higher pressure.
The September weather was perfect for the landmark official opening of the new Memorial Hall. The sun shone down, setting the facility off perfectly as people began to arrive for the opening ceremony.
